We occasionally get the error Login Failure for 'Admin' (client: then IP address). The SQL 2005 server is set up to use windows authentication and no one uses an account called Admin. The people here use their windows logon to access the database. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Q1: Any way to control which db loads when, and perhaps stop this error from happening? Again- when all is said and done, the report server functions, and I am able to access just fine.
Q2: What kind of recovery is being referred to? Given the message type- I assume it's nothing of concern- probably more to do with a system that doesn't run all the time.
Okay- so I get these two event messages each time I boot.
Below are two error message I see daily with each system boot- the services mentioned do "actually" function, and are running- as not 10 seconds after these messages are logged, the successfully loaded messages appear. It's almost as if report services tries to connect before the databases are up and running.
Basically the sequence (today) was:
1. 05:49:01 Failure Audit (MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS) 2. 05:49:01 Error (Report Server Windows Service (SQLEXPRESS) 3. 05:49:02 Recovery is complete. (EventID 3408 MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS) 4. 05:49:06 Starting up database 'ReportServer' 5. 05:49:09 Server Resumed execution (MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS)
I'm assuming based on the events that Report Server Service attempts to connect to the ReportServer database before it's actually started. Doesn't really explain the failure audit-
This is almost immediately followed by this (which I consider a no-brainer, considering the above):
2. Error:
Event Type: Error Event Source: Report Server Windows Service (SQLEXPRESS) Event Category: Management Event ID: 107 Date: 8/9/2007 Time: 05:49:01 User: N/A Computer: <MACHINENAME> Description: Report Server Windows Service (SQLEXPRESS) cannot connect to the report server database.
We recently upgraded to SQL 2005 from SQL 2000. We have most of our issues ironed out however about every 1 minute there is a message in the Application Event log and the SQL log that states:
EVENT ID 18456 Login Failed for the users DOMAIN/ACCOUNT [CLIENT: <local machine>]
This is a state 16 message which I thought meant that the account does not have access to the default database. The account is actually the account that the SQL services run under.
Any ideas? We can't seem to figure this one out. We actually upgraded to 2005 from 2000 and had an error appear after every reboot that prevented the SQL Agent from running(This application has failed to start because GAPI32.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.) We did a full uninstall of SQL and reinstalled fresh and restored the databases from .bak files and that is when the EVENT ID 18546 started occuring every minute.
We don't have any SQL heavy hitters here so please be detailed with any possible solutions. That you very much for any help you can provide!
In the application log on my SQL server i get a lot of messages saying: Login failed for user 'DomainComputername$' [Client: "ip adress"] Type: Failure Aud. User: DomainComputername$ Source: MSSQLSERVER Event ID: 18456
I am not a DBA, but have dealt with a number of POS applications that use SQL Server 2005 as their back end.
That said, I'm no pro, but I can generally keep a DB running. Here is my problem scenario:
Everyday, at least three times a day, the server spontaneously starts rejecting all connections. The event log shows repeated messages of Event ID 18456 which is a logon issue. The server continues to reject all connections from that point until the machine is restarted. Restarting the SQL server without restarting the machine accomplishes nothing...
Looking at the SQL logs gets some further information:
Event ID: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 10
Apparently, state is of some significance though all of the links I have found that explain what the various states mean leave out number 10. (such as here (http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=18456&eventno=8175&source=MSSQLSERVER&phase=1))
This problem did not start happening until 4 days ago. The only event I can think of that also happened at this time was the installation of PHP (which doesn't even touch SQL Server...)
I've got a clean SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition installation, with a domain account configured as the service account. My application log is now flooded with the following error message:
For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. Data: 0000: 18 48 00 00 0e 00 00 00 .H...... 0008: 0d 00 00 00 54 00 4e 00 ....T.N. 0010: 47 00 2d 00 4d 00 4f 00 G.-.M.O. 0018: 53 00 53 00 44 00 42 00 S.S.D.B. 0020: 30 00 31 00 00 00 07 00 0.1..... 0028: 00 00 6d 00 61 00 73 00 ..m.a.s. 0030: 74 00 65 00 72 00 00 00 t.e.r...
And when I open up the SQL logs, I'm getting two errors - one is essentially the same as the above, and the other is:
Date 5/25/2007 1:51:00 AM Log SQL Server (Current - 5/25/2007 1:51:00 AM)
Source Logon
Message Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 16.
Now I've seen all kinds of posts about granting rights to master and such - and I have, but these errors are not going away. I've gone so far as to create new service accounts and even switch over to the local system account - and the error still occurs. Does anyone have any insight into other routes / approaches I can take with this?
I am running Windows server 2003, IIS 6.0, and SQL Server 2005. I am trying to set up dotnetnuke to run on the same machine as both these servers and I am running into an error that the dotnetnuke forum has not been able to help me with. I have set up a user called dnnuser in my windows authentication domain, and have added the user to SQL and given them ownershhip of my new dotnetnuke database. Howeever, when I try to start up DotNetNuke in my browser on the local machine I get a failure to log in. The first messages in theSQL Server log is "Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 6" then I get "Login failed for user 'DSD-WINdnnuser'. [CLIENT: <local machine>]" Then the next two lines in the log are "Login succeeded for user 'DSD-WINdnnuser'. Connection: trusted. [CLIENT: <local machine>]" and then "Login succeeded for user 'NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE'. Connection: trusted. [CLIENT: <local machine>]". What would cause the server to reject the login once and then immediately accept it?
I then try to run the same app from the client computer, it gives me:
Login failed for user 'LAPTOPGuest'.
After looking up the web for solution, I found that I can test the connection from the HOST computer in this way:
C:Documents and Settingskit>sqlcmd -E -S laptopsqlexpress 1> 2>
The test is successful
Now I run the same command on the CLIENT computer
C:Documents and SettingsKit>sqlcmd -E -S laptopsqlexpress Msg 18456, Level 14, State 1, Server LAPTOPSQLEXPRESS, Line 1 Login failed for user 'LAPTOPGuest'.
Now I can sure that from the client computer it cannot make a connection to it, then I look at the errorLog from my host computer
2006-08-13 21:41:00.34 Logon Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11. 2006-08-13 21:41:00.34 Logon Login failed for user 'LAPTOPGuest'. [CLIENT: 192.168.0.5] 2006-08-13 21:45:10.64 Logon Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11. 2006-08-13 21:45:10.64 Logon Login failed for user 'LAPTOPGuest'. [CLIENT: 192.168.0.5] 2006-08-13 21:48:41.80 Logon Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11. 2006-08-13 21:48:41.80 Logon Login failed for user 'LAPTOPGuest'. [CLIENT: 192.168.0.5]
Now I know it is actually Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11.

Valid login but server access failure
It tells the connection string and SQL Express seem to be set up properly but the server access failed the remote connection
I have previously had SQL Server 2000 installed. I uninstalled SQL 2000 before I install SQL express but somehow the SQL Server Service Manager is still running at startup, and C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server80 and its files are still exist after uninstallation..... Could this be a problem?
The Knowledge base suggestion on "enabling remote connection" is very simple and I do not understand why it is so difficult to me just to make a remote connection test work..... please, I need your help.
Recently, one of my clients began receiving this error. My team gave them sysadmin permissions, but this is terrible practice. I have read into disablying simple file sharing, but I don't even think I have the option to do it. I look in mycomputer > tools > view and don't see any option for this. Besides, the problem just started occuring recently, within the last week. The server is a cluster with veritas clustering and the edition is sql server 2000. Has anybody ever had a problem like this and have a good fix? Thanks for any help in advance... -Kyle
I'm a bit new to administering a SQL Server and this seems like a pretty basic question, but I'm not sure how to phrase it for the searches. So I apologize for seeking an indulgence...
I have SQL Server 2005 Standard edition running on a server exposed to the Internet. A handful of clients have to connect to it via TCP/IP using SQL Server Studio and ODBC links. But my windows logs are chok-full of failure audits of what I presume to be your garden variety crackers trying default passwords -- several times a minute.
What's the best solution to this, and how would I go about implementing it? Restrict TCP/IP access to certain IP ranges? Is there a 'max login attempts' somewhere? The server uses SQL authentication (not windows) if that makes a difference.
I have SQL 2005 installed in a virtual (ESX) environment with a separate DC. Every minute or so an event shows up in the Application Event Log that says:
Type: Failure Audit
User: dgtestdc1$
Computer: sql1
Source: MSSQLSERVER
Category: (4)
Event ID: 18456
Description:
Login failed for user 'dgtestdc1$'. [Client: <ip address>]
Is there any differene between on-error event handler and precedence constrain failure? I have created a package and if a data flow task(flat file to DB) fails, the file has to be moved to archive folder. How I have accomplished this is Dataflow task->precedence constrain failed(red arrow)->execute process task to move the file to error folder and it worked,The same execute process task( to move the file to error folder) doesnot work when I move this to on-error event handler. Also, for the same file the on-error event is getting triggered multiple times.
I have made a server security audit and specify from database audit specification to audit "select" on a certain user and on a certain table. I logged in by this user and made the select statement..when i run this query
"select * from sys.fn_get_audit_file('d:Auditaudit1*',null,null)"
It return a value at which time the query has done
after 15 minutes i repeated the same action, i run the audit query and the same result is showed off on the panel.is it suppose to return a list of values by how many times this user has made the select statement on that table ? for example at 5:00 pm then 6:00 pm and so on
I need help...here is the problem.Last weekend, the servers in our datacenter where moved around. After thismove, and maybe coincidental, 1 server is performing very poor. Afterrunning a trace with SQL Profiler, I saw the problem which was laterconfirmed with another tool for SQL server performance monitoring. It seemsthat all connections to the SQL server (between 200 - 400) are doing a login/ logout for each command that they process. For example, the user'sconnection will login, perform a SELECT, and then logout. This is not a..NET application. The client software was not changed, it is still thesame. The vendor has said that it is not supposed to do that, it issupposed to use 1 connection that log's on in the morning and logs off atthe end of the day or whenever the user exits. 1 user may have severalconnections to the database. At times, the server is processing over 250 login / logouts (avgeraged for30 second period). Has anyone seen this problem? I have the server inAUDIT FAILUREs only. The server has become very unresponsive, things thattook 3 seconds now take over 15 seconds.Any ideas???
My SQL Server 2005 SP4 on Windows 2008 R2 is flooded with the below errors:-
Date 10/25/2011 10:55:46 AM Log SQL Server (Current - 10/25/2011 10:55:00 AM) Source spid Message Event Tracing for Windows failed to send an event. Send failures with the same error code may not be reported in the future. Error ID: 0, Event class ID: 54, Cause: (null).
Is there a way I can trace it how it is coming? When I check input buffer for these ids, it looks like it is tracing everything. All the general application DMLs are coming in these spids.
I have been testing with the WMI Event Watcher Task, so that I can identify a change to a file. The WQL is thus:
SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent within 30 WHERE targetinstance isa 'CIM_DataFile' AND targetinstance.name = 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Backup\AdventureWorks.bak'
This polls every 30 secs and in the SSIS Event (ActionAtEvent in the WMI Task is set to fire the SSIS Event) I have a simple script task that runs a message box).
My understanding is that the event polls every 30 s and if there is a change on the AdventureWorks.bak file then the event is triggered and the script task will run producing the message. However, when I run the package the message is occurring every 30s, meaning the event is continually firing even though there has been NO change to the AdventureWorks.bak file.
Am I correct in my understanding of how this should work and if so why is the event firing when it should not ?

I am trying to connect to a remote SQL server via Management Studio. I am using the windows credentials I use to log into the computer but when I enter the same domainusername and password I get error 18456. I check the logs and see it is a state 6 error. After checking http://blogs.msdn.com/sql_protocols/archive/2006/02/21/536201.aspx I see that means Attempt to use a Windows login name with SQL Authentication
Is it possible for me to access a SQL server remotely?
I am using the Configure Publishing and Distribution Wizard in the SQL Server Enterprise Manager to configure a server as a Distribution and Publishing server. The security configuration on the server in question for authentication is SQL Server and Windows NT.
When I get to the first page in the wizard I select that I want to use the server as the Distributor. The other option is to use another server for the Distribution server - and this isn't what I want to do. The next page presents the option to use the default settings to configure the distribution databases or to configure the setup. If I select the default options I get the following error message when the arrow is pointing to Configuring Distributor:
---------------------------------------------- SQL Server Enterprise Manager could not configure 'SERVER1' as the Distributor for
'SERVER1'.
Error 18456: Login failed for user 'sa'. Remote logins for remote server 'repl_distributor' have been dropped. Server dropped. Server added. Server network name set.
----------------------------------------------
Something I have tried to change in order to fix this issue is the 'Replication agents on the Distributor log into the Publisher:' option from its default (By impersontating the SQL Agent account on 'SERVER1' (trusted connection)) to 'Using SQL Server Authentication of this account:', and in those fields I have put in 'sa' (which is a valid admin account to the SQL server) and the correct password.
In all cases I get the message above. Can anyone help me to see what I am doing wrong?
I have tried accessing a remote database in one of by stored procs using linked servers and also using OpenDataSource method. In both the cases , I am getting login failed error.
Following is the stored proc :
CREATE PROCEDURE TEST AS
SELECT * FROM OPENDATASOURCE( 'SQLOLEDB', 'Data Source=blrkec3432s;User ID=xyz;Password=xyz').LMC.dbo.STATE GO
Hai, I'm using SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition in my windows XP SP2 machine. I have only 1 server to which my 4 client machines are connected. Whenever I'm connecting to my SSMS using my domain account I get an error message indicating ' Login failed for user 'domain nameaccount name'.(Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18456).I have tried with Microsoft's KB Article ID: 889646 and all other kind of stuffs. It's not helping me to sort out this problem. Could anyone help me outta here.
This error has come up time and again and I can't seem to find a solution.
