I don't know how many folks here log into the Microsoft Connect site occasionally to check suggestions and bugs submitted to Microsoft for SQL Server and SSIS (still called DTS on their list). A small pecentage? Almost everyone? (Possibly in this group.) Anyone can vote for feedback they think is important. Theoretically issues with the most votes will get Microsoft's attention first.
Links to a couple new submissions that look interesting:
1. SSMS/QA Style Message Logging for SSIS Execute SQL Tasks
2. ForEach SMO Enumerator Filtering
I vetted these issues in the forum first, so hopefully they're legitimate enough to warrant some useful feedback or even a few high fives!
I submitted a posting to connect here: https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=287213
Here is what I wrote:
A number of tasks output data to variables or text files. e.g. WMI Data Reader Task, Execute SQL Task, Web Service Task.
Consuming that output in a data-flow isn't particularly easy. You either need a Flat File source adapter (which requires an othrewise superfluous connection manager) or write come code in a script component to parse the recordset. There is simply no easy way to push data from these sources into the dataflow.
Thw built-in mechanism for passing data between different tasks is raw files. Currently they can only be used by the dataflow but I see no reason why they couldn't be used by other tasks as well. It makes complete sense to me for a WMI Datareader Task to push some data into a raw file and then we chew that data up in a dataflow.
The following response came back
Our current architecture actually doesn't have the buffer system as in Data Flow, when you are in the Control Flow. What you are asking would require us to build a similar buffer system in the Control Flow, which is a fundemantal architectural change. We'll not be able to take this, sorry.
I'm afraid I don't understand that response. Obviously I know that buffers are only in the data-flow - but I don't see why that's relevant. Raw files are just files on the file system, same as any other. OK, their format is very proprietary but its you guys that built the format. Essentially all I'm asking you to do is output the data in raw file format as opposed to flat file format. There's no notion of buffers in a raw file because its just a lump of data. Or is there? If not, I'm afraid I don't understand your answer.
Hi! I have just installed Microsoft OLEDB provider for DB2 on a SQL server 2005. I created a Linked server against our DB2 V.8 Z/OS database. I tested the connection via execution of a simple select call, something like:
SELECT FIELD_A FROM DB2SRV.DB2DB.CREATOR_A.TABLE_A WHERE FIELD_A='ABC'
I traced the call on the DB2 site. The SQL running on DB2 site was to my surprise without the €œwhere clause€?:
SELECT FIELD_A FROM DB2DB.CREATOR_A.TABLE_A
So, all rows are moved to SQL server before the where clause is executed, resulting in bad performance. The index on FIELD_A is not used and so on €¦ !
If anyone out there has an idea of what could be wrong, please let me know!
NB. I know that by using OPENQUERY pass-through query, all execution is done on the DB2 site.
I'm fully supportive of the product Feedback Center initiative and the subsequent withdrawal of sqlwish.
Problem is, if nobody ever gives us feedback on the things that we submit then it simply is a glorified version of sqlwish with no added value.
I apologise if there are plans afoot to address to offer feedback to the things we put up there but I (and others) have been freely submitting bugs and suggestions for a few months now without hearing anything back and I'm beginnign to wonder why we bother.
Even a simple "This is a good idea and will be considered for Katmai" or "This is a terrible idea now go and stick your head back in the sand" would be better than a cut and pasted response which is just about all I've seen so far.
I'm getting the following error:An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) Here's the setup: I have a website I've published on my server, but I haven't moved the SQL DB over to the server. For some reason the testing server can't connect with sql express on my computer. I have named pipes, tcp/ip both on, connections string is "Data Source=AMBA-176SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=pubs;Integrated Security=SSPI"When I'm simply testing the site locally in visual studio it can connect just fine.
I am developing a web site with asp.net 2.0 and c#, using Visual Studio 2005 and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 ( I am still learning about these technologies and languages ). I transferred my web site files to a new computer. I created a empty SQL database called "SiteData.mdf", I stopped the SQL server and then I replaced this database with a previous one with the same name and already populated with data. I used this maneuver in order to avoid having to insert all data again. The web site works fine when running inside Visual Studio, however when I try to run it in its published format it gives this error message: Server Error in '/MA' Application. Cannot open database "SiteData" requested by the login. The login failed.Login failed for user 'CENTAURUSASPNET'. I also observed that inside the SQL Server Management Studio, in the database properties, it shows "ETHERASPNET" as User or Roles ( however "ETHERASPNET" was created using the old computer's name [ or should I say domain ? ]) but the permissions list correctly displays the new name "CENTAURUSASPNET". I think that I, probably, should create a new user using the name "CENTAURUSASPNET" because it would use the name of the new computer ( or domain ) and then I should delete the old user name. Actually I tried to do that but I get the message "An object named ‘CENTAURUSASPNET' cannot be found". So, 1) What should I do to get the database being connected with the published web site ( note: I am publishing it in my own computer for awhile ) ? 2) How do I create the new user name "CENTAURUSASPNET" ? 3) I also would like to know why the name of the database in the Server Explorer panel of VS appears as "centaurus.SiteData.dbo" -while- inside the Object Explorer panel of the SQL Server Management Studio it appears simply as "SiteData" ?

Can anyone please teach me how to make a connection between jsp file and Microsoft SQL Server database steps by steps?
I'm using Windows XP and I found that my computer do not have JDBC (I already have ODBC). Is this mean that I have to install some JDBC or SQL driver in order to make the connection? Which driver should I install and where can I get the driver?
If possible, please show me some example so that I can understand better..Thanks a lot.
I have a vb 6 app that exports data from sql to excel. The user has the ability to select either local or server. When they select server, the connection string is modified to include the server name instead of the local msde instance to look like this:
I'm using Microsoft Jet Provider 4.0 and OpenDataSource.
SELECT * INTO TempXL FROM OPENDATASOURCE('Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0', 'Data Source=C: estxltest.xls;Extended Properties=Excel 8.0')...[Sheet1$]
This code works fine when user is accessing msde on local, but when using above DSN, I receive the following message:
"2147217900 - OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEdB.4.0' IDBInitialize:: Initialize returned 0x800040005: The provider did not give any information about the error.]
When I trace the connection, these error messages occur:
Failed to set proper user name ('NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM') for the connection

I am especially puzzled by the second message because I am specifying the database name in my connection string as:
I'm new to SQL server, still in the beginning stage of learning SQL Server. I'm here would like know, besides using the Connectivity from the DTS Designer to connect to different databases, is it possible to connect the database, i.e: Access via stored procedure? and how? Pls advise...
I'm have been trying to look for the solution via a lot of SQL Server site, but fail to get what I want.
What I'm trying to do is something like : First connect to the Database and Query the data, after that insert it into another database....
MOM connects to 19 instances without issue and fails on one (1). The failing instance resides on a server with two(2) other instances that do not fail. Security is setup the same on windows and sqlserver.
Receiving error in MOM: "Could not connect using SQLDMO to SQL Instance WEB. However, the instance is currently running."
Presents in Event Viewer as: "18452: Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection."
Troubleshooting so far: Created simple SqlDMO VBScript that uses a trusted connection. This works fine from my desktop to all twenty (20) instances yet fails on the one server that MOM is running on.
When I try to connect to the Reporting Services using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio, the following error message propmpts up:
_____________________________________________________________ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The request failed with HTTP status 401: Unauthorized. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.UI.RSClient) _____________________________________________________________
Is there any settings that I need to do in the "Reporting Services Configuration Manager" ?
I want to connect to company's SQL Server from home and to connect to home's SQL server from company remotely. The new released SQL Server Web Data Administrator by Microsoft seems solving my issue. I use it to connect to different SQL servers in different domains company wide successfully, but I failed to connect to home from company( I have static IP on the home server). Also I want to know how to configure the sever name if I want to connect to company's SQL Server from home. The company SQL server is inside the firewall with a internal IP. How it works?
I have designed a DTS package which will migrate a view from Sqlserver 2000 to Oracle. My package is using Microsoft OLEDB provider for Oracle driver for connecting to oracle.Im able to execute this package on the my system ie on the system where sqlclient is installed(Oracle client is also installed on my machine) .But when im doing it on the server im not able to do it.The Connection to Oracle Fails. I wanted to know in order to connect to Oracle from the server,is it necessary that Oracle has to be installed on the server?.If yes, is it enough if i install oracle client on the server or Oracle Server version has to be installed on Server.
I am having a problem with connecting to SQL Server 2005 database from Office Business Scorecard Manager 2005 (the connection string i am using is: provider=SQLOLEDB;Data source=server_name; Initial catalog=database_name). But the connection failed. Would please any experts here shed me any light on what is the problem and how to fix it then? As there is no any forum for Office Business Scrorecard manager 2005. Therefore I post my thread here as it is related to the connection to SQL Server 2005 database engine, thought here is the best place for this question.
Thank you very in advance for your kind advices and help. And I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.
I have a question about opening files in the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Management Studio.
In the old Query Analyzer from SQL 2000 I can open SQL Files via drag & drop (from explorer to QA) or open it with a double click in the explorer. Then the Files opened, if I had actual a connection to a server / database (QA is stared with one file and has a connection to Server/Datebase), with this connection.
Now in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Management Studio I'll be asked everytime for Server and have to get the database from the database list - it does not connect automaticly to server/database, that is actual connected (I have opened a file with the connection and a connected database in the object explorer).
Someone do not have this problem - but we found no option to set it up.
Might be purchasing the SQL Spotlight product, any experience/input from current users would be appreciated. Looks like good product, little worried about the overhead
I haven't touched MSSS in a looong time When a SELECT returns say 3 rows what does the feedback say ? (eg Oracle/sqlplus says "3 rows selected") What if "no data found", what is the feedback ?
hi. ive just written my first complex SP for SQLServer 2005. id be REALLY grateful for any feedback please. if there's anything i'm doing wrong then it's better that i know sooner rather than later! im wondering if its over complex or just plain wrong. please bear in mind that i have at least made an attempt at this, this is my first proper SP.
the SP that I have written is to insert an Account and a User. The SP should do the following.
1. Start a transaction. 2. Insert a user by calling a nested SP. if the return value is greater than zero then the user has been successfully inserted. 3. only attempt to insert an account afterwards if the user has been inserted successfully. 4. if the user or account insert is not successful then rollback. otherwise commit the transaction 5. return an error code from the SP as such: 0 = success. 1 = failure, a user already exists with the given username. 2 = an unknown error occurred whilst inserting the user. 3 = an unknown error occurred when inserting the Account.
I have some long running scripts which I fire at my database using osql.(These are big files and mostly doing inserts but some also do a few otherthings.) It would be nice to have some activity indication (other than thedisk activity light) that these are running. When I used to use Oracle, their equivalent to osql had an option to print a dot (without a carriagereturn) for every "n" statements. This gave a nice "I'm alive" indicator. Ican simulate this by adding a few "print" statements in my sql, but printalways adds a carriage return. Does anyone know a way of doing a print butwithout the addition of a CR (or CR/LF)? So that a second "print" sends itsoutput to the same line as the first?I know this is a nicety and I can live without it, but it would be nice.thanks in advance,Brianwww.cryer.co.uk/brian

I€™d like everyone€™s help is do some research into an often heard, but rarely explained, complaint related the SQL Express. Your answers will help me plan future versions of SQL Express. Feel free to respond directly in the forum or by sending e-mail to me. (Note: Remove the word online from the e-mail address in my profile or it will bounce.) The complaint: €œSQL Express is too big.€? I€™m trying to understand what this really means and what specific technical issues are caused by this €œbigness€?. Here are some questions to help frame your answer. Size means size 1. Is the size of the SQL Express installer package an issue for you? (SQL Express 32 €“ 52 MB / SQL Express Advanced ~250 MB) 2. Why is this size an issue? 3. Would you be willing to sacrifice functionality to reduce the size of the installer package? Size means disk space 1. Do the SQL Express binaries take up too much room on the hard drive? 2. Would you be willing to sacrifice functionality to reduce the amount of HD space needed? 3. Do your databases take up too much disk space? 4. Would you be willing to pay money to reduce the size of the database file? 5. How much money? Size means memory 1. Does SQL Express take up too much memory when it€™s running? 2. What impact does this have on you? 3. SQL Express currently reduces its memory set when it is idle which results in a delay when it becomes active again? Is this a reasonable trade-off to reduce memory usage when you€™re not using the database engine? 4. Do you normally use SQL Express for single user applications (local data store) or for multi-user applications (server data)? 5. If you run SQL Express as a server, do you run it on a dedicated computer or on a computer running other programs as well? 6. What kinds of programs does SQL Express have to share with? 7. Should SQL Express give up memory resources to other programs running on the same machine? 8. Are you willing to accept a reduction in performance in order to have memory resources shared? Size means something else 1. Is there something I didn€™t cover? I€™ll be tracking this thread, but will try not to comment to much since this is about your feedback, not my answers. I wrote a post in the connect forums almost two weeks ago, but haven't got any response yet. So I'll post here as well, hoping that someone from the SQL team will stumble upon this.
My post is about a possible bug in SQL. Here's the url: https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=342390
hi all iwant to make feedback after insert data or delet date Like( the data is sucssfuly way) or(data is delete sucssuse way) but not alert iwant feedback thank you
I am interested in hearing from those who are using SQL7 in production. Please include size of database, number of users, implementation date and experiences to date - good bad or indifferent. Thank-you, Leo
