Finding SQL Server Performance Throughput Load

Aug 31, 2007

Hello!! guys..

I am using sql server 2005 enterprise edition in the clustered environment with netapp storage (one server) I monitor the server performance, basically using windows performance monitor counters such as avg.disk queue length, avg. disk reads/sec, avg disk writes/sec, processor time, available memory Mbytes, cache hit ratio etc. and using some sql server dmvs .

At this point all looks good.

My problem i dont know how much load sql server can handle more .How much it being utilized now? whehet it has reached its limits...how do i know it is just about to reach its linits??

how much throughput sql server is handling at present, how much more it can handle if incoming traffic increases.

Basically i want to find performance baselines , how much more it can handle so that i can plan for the future ..

How do i measure all this?
what are different methods available if i want to handle increased incoming traffic? (e.g. adding multiple servers etc.)
It will be really great if someone can share his experience on this..

Is there any article/white paper on this ..

Any suggestion/help appreciated

Thanks

Integration Services Extraction/loading Throughput/performance

Apr 28, 2006

I'm new to integration services.
I want to create a centralized reporting system for our customers. Some customers have up to 1,000 sites and some are expected to grow past 5,000 sites. The sites are running POS applications and I want to extract the POS sales data from these sites. Is it practical to expect that SSIS can handle the extraction of data from this many sites and load the data into a central
SQL database? The POS sales data at the sites is stored in SqlExpress databases but the data is also available in XML format.
If it's practical for Integration Services to do this, what frequency is it possible to pull this data?
I realize that the amout of data is relative but just wondering if anyone is attempting to do this with integration services.
If not with integration services, then what method(s) are available and used to extract data from this many remote sites?

SQL 2012 :: Disabling Indexes For Load Performance?

Sep 22, 2015

I'm trying to improve the loading of some tables with large amounts of data that forms part of an ETL. I was going to try removing any indexes before the inserting to speed up the process, but I had some questions on whether or not I should include the clustered index (assuming one exists).

I was originally planning on including a step to disable all indexes on the destination table using the following:

ALTER INDEX ALL ON MyTable DISABLE

Once the load had finished I'd simply rebuild all the indexes.

should I simply disable the non-clustered indexes?

If yes, what mechanism is used such as shared disk, share nothing,etc.2. Do these dB have Security features?2a. If yes, what security features are supported? For instance do theysupport encryption or SSL connection?3. How does the database perform and what is the criteria for theperformance matrix?4. Do they have inbuilt load balance capabilities?I want to thank everyone for taking your time to read thiscorrespondence. DataWarehouse - 140 Million Rows - Load Performance Issue

Mar 10, 2000

Need help, I am managing a Data Warehouse (80 G.B Database Size), I purge older than 6 months data from a table which has more than 140 Million rows on daily basis. The daily data load performance is degrading. The table has no clustered indexes (only non-clustered indexes).

Tried dropping and rebuilding the non-clustered indexes, didn't work.

One way to solve the problem is drop the non-clustered index, bcp out the data, truncate the table and bcp in the data and rebuild the non-clustered indexes. This is too risky and taking 14 hours to bcp out the data.

This was not the issue in SQL Server 6.5, because SQL 6.5 always insert new record indexes at the end of the heap link (heap = non-clustered indexes without clustered index). In contrast, SQL Server 7.0 first checks for available space in existing pages by using percent free space pages (this is where it is killing the performance ).

Thanks for your help!

MQPERF.dll Performance Counters Fail To Load (was New Member ... With New Problem)

May 2, 2006

Hello to all the members.

I have a SQl server on a Win2000 box. The server is located behind a screened subnet, and has no access to the outside world except for 1433 and 445 inbound from a webserver located in a DMZ, forward of the internal firewall. Rules are very tight, and the IIS box is patched and has been hardened further including running urlscan. (allowed verbs=get, head, post. all executable and script types disallowed, permissions very tight) I have written an appication that monitors bad http requests in real time to check that the URL scan is working, and it seems to be. The only way to get to the SQL box, would be running injection on page code (majority written by myself no raw sql) on the web server or launching an exploit over HTTP against known ADODB flaws on the web server. The SQL server is a domain member, the IIS server is a standalone. If theres a way to compromise the SQL box without first breaching both firewalls, or first compromising the IIS server, I dont know how to do it. Still, the sql box began acting up, refusing to accept a terminal services connection (the error stated that there was a failure to load Win32.sys) No sign that the machine had been compromised. I restored from a complete back up, which seemed to fix the terminal services problem, but now the sql performance counters fail to load. Specifically MQPERF.dll. Any ideas on what may have caused the server to have 'issues' (prevailing theory centers around evil spirits), and what can I do to get the performance counters to load. Tried replacing the library.

Thanks in advance,

VLG

Backup Slow Throughput

Nov 16, 2006

Hi Team,

I have a SQL 2000 instance with 46 Databases (all databases put together will be 15 GB in size). I am running a SQL Backup using a third party software.

My full backup of the SQL instance which backs up 15 GB of data finishes within 30-45 minutes. But, my differential backup of the same instance which backs up only 150 -250 MB of data takes 12 hours to backup.

I found a knowledge article from MS Support site which says, differntial backup would take more time than full in few scenarios.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;196658

But the above document is for SQL 7.0. Will it be the same for SQL 2000 and 2005 too? If yes, can you please tell if I can increase the speed of differential backup in my environment. Should I modify any SQL Parameters?

Please let me know your thoughts on this..

Thanks
Santhosh

Capturing Component Throughput

Dec 19, 2007

[Microsoft follow-up]

I've just been reading this thread by a guy asking about capturing the throughput of a dataflow. I suggested that there is no real notion of capturing throughput of a dataflow but I believe there IS a notion of capturing the throughput of a component or an execution tree.

I believe all the information that one would need to capture the throughput of a component (apart from the name of the component that is) is available in the OnPipelineRowsSent event. If there were a OnPipelineRowsSent eventhandler and the OnPipelineRowsSent event contained the name of the component then I think we would be able to capture the throughput of a component. So, some questions:

Why is there no eventhandler for the OnPipelineRowsSent event?

Can the name of the component be added to the information in the OnPipelineRowsSent event?

Following on from this... I once had a conversation here with Kirk Haselden about capturing pipeline throughput. He thought it was a good idea and suggested I raised a DCR for it which I did but that was in the old pre-Connect days and it seems as though that DCR (like SO many other things) didn't make it across to Connect. So, some more questions:

Can you find any Connect DCRs relating to capturing throughput? I've found this: https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=152162 that I raised 18 months ago but which hasn't even had a single comment from anyone at Microsoft.

Do you think that capturing throughput would be useful? I can foresee huge advantages by capturing this in the debugger. (Note that Informatica does this and has done for years. It has a very nice GUI that shows the throughput of each destination in the mapplet.)
I'd welcome any thoughts around this. Its a big ask and it fits in very nicely with my constant, nay INCESSENT, requests for debugging enhancements so maybe this is one for Darvey to have a read of???

Thanks
Jamie

At What Throughput Should I Leave A Connection Open ?

Feb 3, 2005

I am used to writing applications that hit the database "every so often" and am happy with opening and closing the connection to SQL Server for each one.

I am now writing an application that monitors a table where rows are written to it by a 3rd party application at possibly several rows per second. My job is to "pickup" those rows, analyse the data and move them to different tables. This will be done with a timer which is currently set to tick every second.

My question is: At what stage should I start to think about keeping open a permanent connection to the database ?

1 row per second ?

100 rows per second ?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Steve.

Boilerplate Activation SQL For High-throughput

Apr 9, 2007

OK, so assume I am recycling dialogs in my client code, and assume I am doing something similar to get a dialog handle in my TSQL. What should the activated stored procedure that is processing my queue look like if I am expecting thousands of messages per second? Assume also that there is a small bit of logic need to process each individual message? I am building for a high-throughput scenario and would like to get as much as possible out of each second-tier service broker server as possible before the aggregated data is moved up the chain to a master. The first tier is Express on a web server and exists primarily only as a forwarding mechanism.

Auto Update Statistics Asynch And Sporadic Blocking Of Throughput

Oct 20, 2007

Over the past week and a half we started experiencing a sporadic slowdown in our production x64 SQL 2005 Ent. Edition server. Users started complaining of slowness then they started getting timeouts. In looking at sp_who2 and perfmon we saw the following during the slow/frozen periods:
* Dramatic increase in Perfmon Active Transactions
* CPU higher than norm, but not dramatically so
* sp_who2 shows a number of spids in SUSPENDED state (and not running waits)
* no blocking indicated from sp_who2
* active connections slowly increasing
* no disk queuing (or at most some spikes to 1)
After a couple of minutes of this we would then see the following:
* no more spids in SUSPENDED state
* Logins per second spikes dramatically
* Active transactions spikes down to "normal levels"
* CPU goes high then levels out at moderately higher than normal
* active connections slowly decreases back towards normal levels
* large spike in lock wait time

We turned on the Async Auto Update Statistics option (after testing in our staging environment) on the primary database about a week before we saw this problem. By turning it off we can visually see the problem go away by watching the above metrics. So my question is, What metrics can I use to see the "blocking" or resouce locking that is causing these problems?
Anyone?
Thx
Ron

Finding Out Sql Server Characteristics

Nov 5, 2006

Hi everyone, I'm a complete novice in databases :|
I have SQL Server 2005 Express Edition on my personal computer and need to connect to it through Java.
Therefore I need some information about it and don't know where to look. Some of them are:
=> the address of the server to connect to. This could be a DNS or IP address (I have installed the Server on my pc).
=> the instance to connect to (how can i find out where the instances are and which they are ?)
=> the port to connect to (i have no idea what this is at all)
=> the db is set to integrated security or do i have to give a username and password.
=> The name of the database to connect to (how can i find out which databases are available, if any)
note that there is no enterprise manager available. just a configuration manager, error and usage reporting, and surface area configuration.

many thanxs for reading my question.

SQL Server Agent Not Finding The Package To Run

Nov 2, 2006

Hi, I have been searching through the posts hoping to find an answer to my problem. Most errors and problems seem to deal with Agent not being able to run packages because of permission issues.

My problem has to do with SQL Server Agent not finding the package to run. I have a proxy with a high enough level of permissions (SqlAgentOperatorRole).

The error message I get is:

Executed as user: ___/____. The package could not be found. The step failed.

The package is in a folder on our network. When I create the step I use the browser to go find and select the package. So why does it not find it at runtime? I can run it manually

My group is using 2005 for the first time. Any help you can provide would be very much appreciated.

SQL Server - Finding The Different Records In Two Identical Tables

Jul 30, 2007

Does anyone have a good query that would return records from two tables that are found in one, but not it the other table?  In my situation I have 2 tables that are duplicate tables and I need to find an additional 3000 records that were added to one of the tables.  I also have a composite key so the query would have col1, col2 and col3 as the composite key.  So far I have tried concatenating the 3 columns and giving the result an alias and then trying to show the ones that were not in both tables, but have been struggling.  Thanks..

SQL Server 2012 :: Finding First And Repeated Values

Aug 26, 2014

I'm trying to come up with a query for this data:

CREATE TABLE #Visits (OpportunityID int, ActivityID int, FirstVisit date, ScheduledEnd datetime, isFirstVisit bit, isRepeatVisit bit)

INSERT #Visits (OpportunityID, ActivityID, FirstVisit, ScheduledEnd)
SELECT 1, 1001, '2014-08-17', '2014-08-17 12:00:00.000' UNION ALL
SELECT 1, 1002, '2014-08-17', '2014-08-17 17:04:13.000' UNION ALL
SELECT 2, 1003, '2014-08-18', '2014-08-18 20:39:56.000' UNION ALL

[Code] ....

Here are the expected results:

OpportunityIDActivityIDFirstVisitScheduledEndisFirstVisitisRepeatVisit
110012014-08-172014-08-17 12:00:00.00010
110022014-08-172014-08-17 17:04:13.00001

210042014-08-182014-08-18 18:00:00.00010

[Code] ....

Basically I'd like to mark the first Activity for each OpportunityID as a First Visit if its ScheduledEnd falls on the same day as the FirstVisit, and otherwise mark it as a Repeat Visit.

I have this so far, but it doesn't pick up on that the ScheduledEnd needs to be on the same day as the FirstVisit date to count as a first visit:

SELECT*,
CASE MIN(ScheduledEnd) OVER (PARTITION BY FirstVisit)
WHEN ScheduledEnd THEN 1
ELSE 0
END AS isFirstVisit,
CASE MIN(ScheduledEnd) OVER (PARTITION BY FirstVisit)
WHEN ScheduledEnd THEN 0
ELSE 1
END AS isRepeatVisit
