Finding Locally Installed SQL Server 2005 Instances Via C# Code.

Apr 30, 2008

Hello,

I have found code on how to find sql server instances on your local network but my question is. Is there an easy way to find a local copy of SQL Server 2005 and what the name of the instance is. Beacuse the program I am writing will need a sql server installed somewhere on the network then it will allow the user to select either the local copy or a network copy of the sql server

example

on my computer I have SQL Server 2005 express installed and mine is Daniel-LaptopSQLEXPRESS

ODBC Connection For Client Application To SQL Server 2005 Express Installed On Network Computer

May 5, 2006

Hi All,

I've developed an application that connects to a SQL Server 2005 Express database. I created a DSN to connect to the database through ODBC. Currently, I am testing locally and everything works fine.

I would now like to install my application on another workstation and connect remotely to the database located on my development machine.

The client workstation does not have SQL Server 2005 Express installed on it because I would just like my application to connect remotely by creating the DSN and using ODBC. What I'm missing here are the database drivers. The "SQL Natice Client" is not available on this client workstation. How can I deploy the necessary drivers with my installation file so that I may create the required DSN name using the SQL Native Client driver?

Thanks!

Finding SQL-servers In A Network

Jul 20, 2005

Hi,We have an ODBC/Visual-C++-6 -bases application (currently working with both MS-Access and Postgres)and want it to also cooperate with MS-SQL-server and MSDE. Since we don't want theuser to wade through the ugly ODBC-setup, we have our own dialogs (e.g. the usualfile dialog for MS-Access) and build the ODBC-connection string from the information providedby them. Now, the MS-SQL-Driver dialog has the nice feature to browse the network foravailable SQL-server instances and I like to have it, too. Is there somefunction for retrieving a list of available SQL-servers anywhere?Georg

Sql05-exp: What Exactly Is Installed To Client Computers On The Network

Oct 5, 2006

I'm sure this is rediculously simple, but I am totally new to sql. We are upgrading our practice management software to an edition which requires sql to be installed on our Win2003 file DC server and 18 client computers, all running xp-sp2. New software comes with an option to automatically install MSDE but I would like to try sql05 express instead, which they support if it is pre-installed on the server and all workstations. We meet all necessary sql05-exp requirements. After spending several hours online and downloading 05 books online, etc I beleive I understand how to set up the file server where the data resides, but I am now confused about what exactly I am to install on the client computers. Clients have .net 2.0 installed. I see no option to download specific "Client" software, just sql05 server express edition sp1, management studio express, and express edition toolkit sp1. Are you supposed to just run the server ed sp1 on each workstation, enable tcp/ip, and tell it to connect to the server's sql database, and if so, doesn't that leave a sql 'server' running on each workstation? Other documentation mentions installing the toolkit and connecting to the server, but I've found nothing which explains this simple procedure everyone must do, so I know I'm missing the obvious. Please help and Thanks.

I want to find whether SQL Server 2005 x86 is installed or SQL Server 2005 x64 is installed programatically(Any API would do.) If anyone can recommend a registry key that I can rely on find whether it is a 32 bit or 64 bit SQL Server that would suffice.

Bought And Installed VS2005 Professional - There Is No Management Studio Got Installed In The SQL Express.!

Jan 26, 2006

Hi Friends,
I have a question. At my home computer i downloaded and installed VWD. As usual it also installed Sqlexpress as part of the installation(i checked the option). Later on i downloaded Management studio separately so i am fine with my home computer as every thing is free.
But at work we decided to develop application using VS 2005 and Sqlserver 2005. So we bought and  installed VS2005 professional edition at work and it also installed Sqlexpress during the installation as a defualt desktop engine. I am fine with that too. But i am not understing where do i get the Management studio? Is it some thing i could get it off the web for free or what? I am not sure we would have an option while installing the VS 2005 professional that also does install management studio and we need to check that option. I am not sure if we could get the management studion off the web for free and and evelop applications.

Please advise. Thanks -L

[DBNETLIB][ConnectionRead (recv()).]General Network Error. Check Your Network Documen

Sep 30, 2004

Hello all,

We have a Windows 2003 Web Edition server serving a site through IIS. It connects to a Windows 2003 Standard Edition server running SQL 2000 SP3a.

This site receives the following error as seen in the topic:
[DBNETLIB][ConnectionRead (recv()).]General network error. Check your network documentation.

We've configured the server network utility to only allow TCP/IP connections. The connection string for the site is as follows:

<%
' FileName="Connection_ado_conn_string.htm"
' Type="ADO"
' HTTP="false"
' Catalog=""
' Schema=""
MM_connSpankMSSQL_STRING = "Provider=sqloledb;Data Source=SERVER_IP,1433;Network Library=DBMSSOCN;Initial Catalog=ourmaindb_1;User ID=ourmaindb_1;Password=hotcookies;"
%>

Any ideas or tips on solving this issue? We've noticed it is due to larger queries as smaller ones do work with no problems.

The servers are behind a BSD box running iptables, has 1433,1434 along with standard web ports wide open. Anything outbound is allowed.

Some further testing via ODBC on the IIS server improved things. No more connection pooling for the SQL Server driver allows for 1/3 of the query to run. Still 2/3s of it doesn't show up, and that general network error message appears.

Should have 330 rows if it works right.

Hi
While running a DTS, many times the error message: "[DBNETLIB][ConnetionWrite (WrapperWrite()).]General network error. Check your network documentation." appears.
Does somebody knows why?

I am running the DTS from a computer (not the server where the DTS is stored) and it is connected without any problem when this happens.

General Network Error. Check Your Network Documentation

Jan 9, 2006

I use sqlclient to connect directly from my mobile 5 pocketpc to a sql server 2005 database on my desktop.

I use a sqldatareader to traverse the results of a query that delivers 2 fields: (1) the filespec, and (2) the image field.

I use a filestream with a binary writer to write the contents of the image data to the pocketpc's storage card.

I have a test table with 10 images, not one more than 4 MB.  I cannot complete a test run prior to receiving the  general network error.

The pocketPC is connected via activesync to the desktop, and I connect to the database with:

Integrated Security=false;
user id=sa
password=admin.

Any help with this strange error would be greatly appreciated.

I know that the service pack number is incorporated into the version number above but I want to know the type of server I have running.

Any ideas on how I can get this information?

-sql server surface area configuration
-notification services command prompt

Is that all? Did I miss anything? How am I supposed to create databases? How can I connect remotely to another server (database)?

I know I may sound stupid but Im on the beginning and I would so much appreciate any kind of help.

How Do I Connect Client Machines To SQL Server 2005 Installed On A Windows 2003 Server

Apr 11, 2008

I am new to SQL server 2005

Windows 2003 Server and all client PCs are all on the same network. I installed SQL 2005 std version on windows server 2003 and created a database and tables in it.

I have two users, who want to connect to SQL server 2005 from their PCs (they have windows XP):

These are two things that I need to facilitate:

1) They want to be able to write queries using Query Designer and run from their PCs.

2) I created an MS Access database on my PC, I want to use Access database as a front end to the SQL server database. I will create queries, forms in Access DB, and I want to be able to get the data from SQL server Database to do this. I guess I can use ODBC to connect to tables in SQL server database.

3) I want to connect SQL server to Oracle database, and run oracle stored procedures. I want to load the results of oracle stored procedures into SQL server database tables. I guess I will use IIS for this.

Any suggestions are appreciated, especially with item number 1.

Best Practices (set-up): Should SQL Server (2005) *not* Be Installed On The Same Physical HD As The Windows OS (Server 2003 R2

May 22, 2008

Re: Best Practices (security): Should SQL Server (2005) *not* be installed on the same physical HD as the Windows OS (Server 2003 R2) ?

Hi,

We're setting up some new servers, and today I'm looking into best practices for the SQL Server Setup portion of it.

The servers have include 2 x 250G HD, and from what I've read, where IIS is concerned, it should not be installed on the drive that has the OS on it, for security reasons. I was wondering if the installation of SQL Server should be on the non-OS drive as well ?

Thanx,

Barry O'Neill
