Flatfile Destination Variable Filename
Jun 20, 2007
Why does the raw file have an option for a variable path and the flat file destination does not? Not having this feature makes it impossible to work with variable environments. Please add this option to the Flatfile Destination.

I have a raw file destination and am using a variable to store the filename. In an earlier task, I create the value in the variable. User:Filename ... set to C:Test.txt.
When I run the package, I get the "Error: 0xC0202070 at DFT Tekelec Call Events, RFD Tekelec [1365]: The file name property is not valid. The file name is a device or contains invalid characters". error. I then set a breakpoint to examine my variables on the DataFlow pre-execute event and found my variable showing the value "C:\Text.txt" ... so apparently XMLA is adding the escape character when it stores the value in the variable but not retracting it when it uses the value as the filename.
What am I missing? Can I not use pathing in the variable? And if that's the case, how do I specify a path. Went back through my Rational Guide to Scripting SSIS but did not find this addressed specifically ... my second option being build the fiilename by script and set the raw file destination property directly via script.

Hi Champs,
Scenario Configuration : VB.net 2005 Code, WebService for Executing SSIS on Server, SSIS deployed on the Database Server
Problem Description : We are developing windows applicaiton in which we call webservice which was deployed on the same server where SSIS packages are deployed.
Now from Code we are passing FilePath name in variable and execute the Package. But the SSis result says that
The file name "\computernamefol1fol2fol3fol4abc.txt" specified in the connection was not valid.
More Information:
1. Full Permission are given on this network folder.
2. Package executes successfully from SSIS development solution (BIS solution)
3. Deployed packed executes successfully from the Database Server.
4. From Development pc packege executes successfully.
5. Other packages deployed on the same server executed suucessfully with same configuration and scenario.
Only this package is not executing.
-- the only differece with this package with other is -
using ".txt" extension in Flat file connection and using VB Script task
Can any one suggest the appropirate solution for this problem...
Thanks

Hi:
Am trying to write SQL data to multiple flat files.
I use a For Each loop,
store field Values in variables
construct a fileName(variable as expression) for each row,
then create a text file for each row in resultset, (Filesystem task)
and then try to fill each file from a SQL Source to a Flatfile Destination.
Destination.connectionString=Filename.
Works ok for creation of Text Files, so I know my fileName variable is getting evaluated for each iteration.
But the flat file connection manager is stuck and evaluates to the static part of my expression.
What am I doing wrong?
TIA

Hello, I wanted to do the following.
Copy a full directory from source to destination (Done)
then for each file on the destination directory,it must process that file and insert rows on the table.
So I created a foreach loop, and created a varriable aclled CURRENTFILENAME, and assigned it into the foreachloop to index 0.
Inside the foreachloop I created a dataflow task, in the dataflow task I dragged a flat file source and an oledb destination, but I noticed that the flat file source requires flat file manager, and the flat file manager requires a unique FILE NAME. I cant put this c:copia*.txt.
I took a loot at flat file source properties and it has associated the flat file manager, but I can not assign the filename to the variable from the foreach.
Any ideas please

Hi,
I am new to SSIS programming and trying to export data from a flatfile source to SQL server destination table dynamically. I need to get the table schema info (column length, data type etc.) from SQL server table and then map the source columns from flatfile to destination table columns.
I am referring to one of the programming samples from Microsoft and another excellent article by Moim Hossain. Can someone help me understand how to map the Source columns to destination table columns depending on table schema? Please help.
Thanks

We are storing incoming flatfiles into a text field in a table and then we are processing this table on a regular basis. What I would like to do is to get this flatfile from the textfield and populate a flatfile source with it, but so far I have only been able to do that with XML files as there are no option for doing that with the flatfile source. Using the disk as a temporary storage for the flatfile is prohibited.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to solve this?

Does anyone know how to execute a directory listing of a file and return the file name to a variable in SQL? For instance, there's a file called c:datach20011010.txt and i execute the following:
xp_cmdshell 'dir c:datach*.txt'
or any other transact sql or procedure, how can i get the filename into a variable...all in sql?
FYI - I need to pass a filename to a process so that it can bcp the data into a temp table. But I don't know the filename at the time the process is setup/scheduled.

Hope I can make this clear...
I have to download a file via FTP from one of our vendors, the filename is MMDDYYYY.zip, this is a weekly file and is posted between Tuesday and Thursday, so basically I never know exactly what the file is going to be called, to fix that, I added a FTP Task that will download a file if the date = today (Today = Thursday, when the job kicks off), if this fails, try a file where the name = today-1 (Wednesday), if this fails, try today-2 (Tuesday), all of that inside of a Sequence Container and with MaximumErrorCount set to 3. This is fine and it works fine, good.
Now my other issue, the .txt file inside the zip file (1080.txt), after being decompressed, needs to be renamed to MMDDYYYY.txt, where MMDDYYY = to the file I downloaded, but I never know what the file is going to named (MMDDYYYY, MMDD-1YYYY, MMDD-2YYYY).
Is it possible to output the filename of the file that I successfully download to a variable, so I can re-use name?
Any other thoughts?

I'm trying to write a stored procedure in SQL that will make a copy of a file and then append the current date to the end of the copy's filename. I'm storing the date in a variable called @currentdate which is defined as:
declare
@currentdate varchar(10)
set @currentdate='' + 'select datepart(month,getdate())' + '-' + 'select datepart(day,getdate())' + '-' + 'select datepart(year,getdate())'
Here is the SQL code I'm using:
exec xp_cmdshell 'copy "C:DevelopmentParticipant Limits ReportParticipant Limits Report template.xls" "C:DevelopmentParticipant Limits ReportParticipant Limits Report ' + @currentdate + '.xls"'
GO
The resulting file should have a filename something like "Participant Limits Report 3-31-2008". I get an "Incorrect syntax near '+'." error.

i need SSIS package to be configured to get filename is variable and then use insert data from xml or xls file to the related table
I don't understand how to pass file name through variable to SSIS package and then work with so called "variable".xls or

Is there a way to configure the XML source component to use a schema file whose filename is in a variable? Now I know it doesn't make any sense to have an XML source whose schema can vary, however, I have a parent package with a ton of child packages, all of which process the same XML input using the same schema. What I would like to do is for the parent to load the filename of the XML input file into a variable, and the filename of the XML schema file into another. Each child would have its XML source configured to pickup these variables from the parent, so that if the location or name of the schema changes, I don't have to edit each package one-by-one. However, it doesn't seem possible to specify anything but a filename for the schema. Any suggestions?

I am wanting to capture the file name I am using to load data from and use it in a SQL statement to insert it along with the data that I load.
I am using a ForEach container to load all my .txt files but cannot figure out how to capture the name of each source file as it loops through the files and then add it to my insert statement that is populating my history table. I would think that the ForEach container has that information, but I do not see how to access it and assign it to a variable that I could use in my SQL statement.
Any ideas or suggestions?

I want to create a SP that creates a new database, so I script-ed out the db and paste the script into new SP gui (SQL 2000). I want to pass it a variable for the data/log file location that is not the default location. The original script looks like this:
CREATE DATABASE [PWRR_DDS] ON (NAME = N'PWRR_DDS_Data', FILENAME = N'F:SQL SERVER FILESDatabasesdbName.mdf' , SIZE = 3118, FILEGROWTH = 10%) LOG ON (NAME = N'PWRR_DDS_Log', FILENAME = N'F:SQL SERVER FILESDatabasesdbName_Log.LDF' , SIZE = 5000, FILEGROWTH = 10%) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS.
I replaced the path of the FILENAME variable like this:
CREATE DATABASE [PWRR_DDS] ON (NAME = N'PWRR_DDS_Data', FILENAME = @DBPath, SIZE = 5000, FILEGROWTH = 10%) LOG ON (NAME = N'PWRR_DDS_Log', FILENAME = @LogPath , SIZE = 5000, FILEGROWTH = 10%) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS,
declaring the variables as char(500). The error I get is "Incorrect sybtax near '@DBPath'.
Any ideas for workaround?
Thanks,

Need to know how I can get the dynamic filename created in the FlatFile destination for insert into a package audit table?
Scenario: Have created a package that successfully outputs Dynamiclly named flat files { Format: C:Test’Comms_File_’ + ‘User::FileNumber’+’_’+Date +’.txt’
E.g.: Comms_File_1_20150724.txt, Comms_File_2_20150724.txt etc} using Foreach Loop Container :
* Enumerator Set to: “Foreach ADO Enumerator” with the ADO object source variable selected to identify how many total loop iterations there are i.e. Let’s say 4 thus 4 files to be created
*Variable Mappings : added the User::FileNumber – indicates which file number current loop iteration is i.e. 1,2,3,4
For the DataFlow task have a OLDBSource and a FlatFile Destination where Flat File ConnectionString is set up as:
@[User::Output_Path] + "Comms_File"+ @[User:: FileNumber] +"_" + replace((DT_WSTR, 10) (DT_DBDATE) GETDATE(),"-","")+ ".txt"
All this successfully creates these 4 files:
Comms_File_1_20150724.txt, Comms_File_2_20150724.txt, Comms_File_3_20150724.txt, Comms_File_4_20150724.txt
Now the QUESTION is how do I get these filenames as I need to insert them into a DB Audittable. The audit table looks like this:
CREATE TABLE dbo.MMMAudit
(
AuditID INT IDENTITY(1, 1) NOT NULL,
PackageName VARCHAR(100) NULL,
FileName VARCHAR(100) NULL,
LoadTime DATETIME NULL,
NumberofRecords INT NULL
)
To save the Filename & how many records in each file in our Audit Table, am using an Execute SQL Task and configuring it as this:
Execute SQL Task
Parameter mapping - Mapped the User Variable (RecordsInserted) and System Variable( PackageName) to Insert statement as shown below
SQLStatement: INSERT INTO [dbo].[MMMAudit] (
PackageName,NumerofRecords,LoadTime)
(?,?.GETDATE)
Again this all works terrific & populates the dbo.MMMAudit table as shown below BUT I also need to insert the respsctive file name – How do I do that?
AuditID PackageName FileName NumberOfRecords
1 MMM NULL 12
2 MMM NULL 23
3 MMM NULL 14
4 MMM NULL 1

I am trying to migrate database from old structure to new structure usign SSIS.
The table in new db have extra field that i need to assign it using variable. this is because i have few customer that having different variable value. (meaning for 1 customer, the variable will be fix for all the tables in the database)
my question, without using the Execute Sql Task, can i assign the variable into the the old db destination?
eg my data flow Task is : OLE Db Source - Derived Column - OLE DB Destination.
Example data
Old structure (key = txnID)
---------------------
TxnID
ChequeNo
Bank (chq Bank - Bank in Bank)
Amount
New Structure (key = TxnID & CoCode)
-------------------------
TxnID
ChequeNo
ChqBank
BankInBank
Amount
CoCode

Hi,
Here is my problem :
I work on a SSIS package with SQL SERVER 2005
I need to extract data from a table and put these data in csv files
But... the flat files name should be dynamic and assigned by a variable ...
Here's an example of my table :
Column header :
Id, Name, Number
1 TOM 22
2 TOTO 44
3 SAM 44
4 RADIO 55
I expect to have 3 csv files :
USER_22.csv
USER_44.csv
USER_55.csv
for example : USER_44.csv contains :
2;TOTO;44
3;SAM;44
if there's 50 different number, i expect 50 files
can i do that in a dataflow ?
thanks for answering

The CreatePackage sample provided with SQL Server programmatically creates a package that has a source type of OLEDB to a flat file destination. I am building exactly the opposite, source=flatfile, destination=SQL Server. I expect that will be a more common scenario is using SSIS.
The problem I have is populating the source columns in the FlatFileSource connection manager programmatically. I know it can be done because it happens when you build a package in Visual Studio. What I'd like to know is how to do it programmatically in the object model. How can I interrogate the datasource through the connection manager to find out what columns it has? If I know, I can add the columns to the connection manager. My sample below does this, but it doesn't know the number of columns in the source so that value is hardcoded. I'm guessing there is a better way to do this than what I've got below.
How can I find the number of columns in my source so I can add the columns to the connection manager?
Thanks.
Private Sub AddColumnsToFlatFileConnectionManager()
Dim ff As wrap.IDTSConnectionManagerFlatFile90 = Nothing
For Each cm As ConnectionManager In _Package.Connections
If cm.Name.Equals(_ExternalConnectionID) Then
ff = TryCast(cm.InnerObject, wrap.IDTSConnectionManagerFlatFile90)
DtsConvert.ToConnectionManager90(cm)
End If
Next
If Not ff Is Nothing Then
Dim col As wrap.IDTSConnectionManagerFlatFileColumn90
Dim name As wrap.IDTSName90

This seems so obvious, but is causing me a lot of trouble:
The flat files input to my SSIS packages may contain an empty line between each row of data, or may be "continuous" without any extra empty lines. Here are small examples of the data I'm working with:
With the extra line:
"M","SFH","Single Family Mortgage Loans","Single Fam Mtg"
"M","MFH","Multifamily Mortgage Loans","Multi-Fam Mtg"
"R","MIX","Mixed/Various/Unknown","Mixed/Various"
Without the extra line:
"M","SFH","Single Family Mortgage Loans","Single Fam Mtg"
"M","MFH","Multifamily Mortgage Loans","Multi-Fam Mtg"
"R","MIX","Mixed/Various/Unknown","Mixed/Various"
Seems to me it should be possible to set up a single FlatFile connection to handle both these formats, but it's not easy.
I can easily manually edit the FlatFile connection and change the "RowDelimiter" to either "{CR}{LF}" or "{CR}{LF}{CR}{LF}" and the package runs against the corresponding flat file.
However, when I try to use an expression (@[User::StrRowDelimiter]) to set the RowDelimiter to the value of a package variable, the expression is completely ignored.
I can only change the RowDelimiter property on the FlatFile connection by manually opening the editor on the connection and changing it to match the incoming file.
Why isn't this connection seeing the expression I've set up for its RowDelimiter property?
Thanks for any help!
