Force Protocol Encryption In SQL2005 Client Configuration Doesn't...
Feb 5, 2007
I am accessing a SQL2005 Express SP1 Server via TCP/IP (all machines fully up to date with windows update). For ease of configuration the Server IP is mapped to an Alias in Native Client Configuration Manager. On the Client Force Protocol Encryption is set to Yes and Trust Server Certificate is set to No. The clients are accessing the DB via SQL 2005 Management studio express and Ms Access 2003 (an access adp front end to the sql database).
As a test i turned off force encryption on the server. A Network trace shows no encryption! Turning on force encryption on the server corrects this.
As a further test I configured the server with a certificate the client doesn't trust. No error is generated by the un-trusted certificate! The only way to generate the certificate error is to enable encryption in the connection properties of each application. Why isn't the Native Client Configuration Manager utility enforcing this???
This brings me on to a second (off-topic problem). In my access adp file, if I enable €œuse encryption for data€? advanced option under the database connection dialog all works as expected (encryption + certificate verification). However, I am programmatically updating the connection in VBA
Application.CurrentProject.OpenConnection "Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Data Source=AliasName;Use Encryption for Data=True;..."
If I do this no encryption is enabled!!! Access seems to just ignore the encryption statement.
Has anybody got any ideas as to why either of these issues are occurring or if there are any workarounds?
Thanks
Stuart

I am connection to a SQL server that has force protocol encryption checked. From my ASP.net application, specifically in my connection string, what parameter do I need to use to take advantage of this encryption?
Thanks!

I have a 2 node SQL Server 2005 cluster with 2 named instances. Both appear
to be working properly with no issues but I have the following warning
message in the event viewer and I would like to know if it is something I
should be worried about.
Source: SQL Browser
Type: Warning
Category: None
User: N/A
Description: The configuration of the AdminConnectionTCP protocol in the
SQL instance XX is not valid.
The servers in the cluster are running with Windows Server 2003 X64 Enterprise
Edition, SQL 2005 Enterprise Edition SP2 X64.
I have failed the cluster over and I continue to get the message when I
start the instances in the cluster admin, but I don't appear to have any
other symptons. Client machines can connect without any problem and
transactional replication works no matter what node I bring the instance up
on.
I changed default TCP/IP port and disable/enable Named pipes, but no luck so far.
I see lots of postings about this message but it seems to be related to
SQLExpress and I am not using that here.
Any info would be appreciated.

Hello,
I am getting the following warning in the Application Event Log:
The configuration of the AdminConnectionTCP protocol in the SQL instance SQLEXPRESS is not valid.
The warning is logged by the SQLBrowser service.
This is happening on Windows 2003 server with SQL Server Express 2005. On the same machine SQL Server 2000 is installed.
I am currently unable to connect from remote clients to the instance of SQL Express and I believe it has to do with this warning (I've tried all the usual remote connection troubleshooting without success - enabled protocols, SQL Browser Service running, there is no firewall on the server, I disabled firewall on the client when trying to connect).
Does anyone know how to resolve this issue?
If you need additional information please let me know.

I want to configure SQL 2k5 Express so that all connections are
encrypted. I've found the documentation that gives the How-To steps,
but I don't see the SSL option in the Network Configuration.
Is this possible with the Express edition?
Do I need to do something special with the installation?
Thanks,

I have a SQL Server 2012 Standard and needed to fulfill a requirement to set Force Encryption on the Server with a DoD Certificate.
I will be altering my client connections to use Encrypt=True; TrustServerCertificate=True (The client is a .Net Web Application).
The OS is where SQL Server 2012 Standard resides is Windows 2008 R2 DataCenter Service Pack 1 64-bit.
What I am needing to know is where do I get the DoD Certificate from? and Do I just install it on the server where SQL Server resides?

my problem is like that: in the client network utility i check the Force protocol encryption and connect
to the server the client can't connect because he doesn't have the certificate install on his machine which it's OK.
the problem is when i remove the Force protocol encryption on the client he connect successfully without the
certificate install on his machine or any thing.
i double check that on the server i've YES on the Force Encryption in the protocols For MSSQLSERVER.

Hi,
I am at a loss here, unless I misunderstand the whole point about server encryption. My 2005 SQL server has a certificate from a trust CA, I have turned on the 'force encryption' flags on the server. My understanding is any client will be "force" to connect with encryption?? I found out that unless I turn on encryption on my clients, the server will allow connections without the requiring encryption. Am I missing something here? Thanks for any help you can provide.

I would like to force only certain users on certain databases to use encrypted connections for accessing our 2005 SQL Server. I've found a clunky way to do it, via registering a login event notification and using the kill statement. However, that's ugly, and I don't think there is any guarantee that the event will always fire before an evil client could get off a few evil commands. Is this supported, or is the only supported feature the forceencryption option, which is server-wide?

I have a customer who is looking to encrypt their applications connection to the back-end SQL server. I've gotten a valid certificate for the server from a trusted CA, and it's installed on the server (shows up in Personal certificates in the Certificate MMC when selecting the computer) and I can choose it in the drop down on the certificates tab of the SQL Network protocols properties in Configuration Manager.
Now, my question: If I select the certificate but do NOT enable the "Force Encryption" option, the client will be able to request encryption on their end, and the connection will then be encrypted. If the client (other applications) do NOT request encryption, they will still be able to connect, but their connection will be un-encrypted. URL....
Lastly, I could've swore I had found some information indicating that some methods of establishing a connection to SQL can fail when Force Encryption is enabled, as the method doesn't support SSL encryption.

I have a basic understanding of the encryption using T-SQL, but is all of this at the T-SQL level? Like can a client have a certificate, be sent the encrypted value (that was encrypted on SQL Server), and using the same cert that is on the server decrypt the data?
Is there a good article/book that covered encryption in detail that you can suggest? Or is this something that you would build in .NET?

Using SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio, when I try to create a new OLEDB connection manager and I try to connect to the SQL 2005 DB, I get an error message saying that "Client is unable to establish connection Encryption not supported on the client"
This is ONLY in SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio!
If I connect to the same server using SQL Server Management Studio and using server type Integration Services, everything works just fine.
However this way I cannot create a working SSIS package from the client, if not working locally on the server, which is a bit nonsense.
Any suggestions?

Hi,
Made the jump from SQL2000 to 2005 - i'm not a DBA but like to play around with such nice tools- and tried to convert my DTS package into a 2005 one.
I've got a csv file containing some log in information.
As users log in everyday, this keeps getting added to the file.
I'm only interested in the latest appearance of a certain machine on the network so i filter by creating an unique Index
the CSV file get's imported into a temporary table first and then i executed the following on SQL2000
CREATE TABLE [patchings].[dbo].[allfilter] (
[username] varchar (20) NULL,
[machine] varchar (20) NULL,
[os] varchar (20) NULL,
[sp] varchar (20) NULL,
[date] smalldatetime NULL,
[time] varchar(10) NULL,
[logonserver] varchar (20) NULL,
[country] varchar (20) NULL,
[domain] varchar (20) NULL,
varchar (20) NULL,
[brand] varchar (20) NULL,
[model] varchar (20) NULL,
[speed] int NULL
)
CREATE unique INDEX [my filter] ON [dbo].[allfilter]([machine], [os]) with ignore_dup_key ON [PRIMARY]
go
insert into "Allfilter" select * from temptable order by date desc
This worked perfectly in SQL2000.
when i try to do the same in SQL2005, it doens't start inserting the most recent machines (filtered on the date) but machines at random
selecting the select * from temptable order by date desc shows me the correct order for the machines by date so i'ld presume that it adds the most recent combination of machine and operating system from "today" and ignores the older appearances.
if the temptable contained for instance..

I setup SQL 7.0 server on NT Server and SQL 7.0 client on NT workstation. I wrote a VC++ program using ODBC to connect
database and set ODBC Data Source Administrator as follow:
- Add a new User DSN
- setup name, description, server, of User DSN
- enter Login ID and psw
- Change the default database to "Test" which I've already built on server (leave other options remain)
- didn't change any settings in the next page
- Test Data Souce successfully.
But when I run the VC++ program, it comes out an error message like this:
SQL Error State:01000, Native Error Code: 1645, ODBC Error: [Microsoft]
[ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Changed database context to 'Test'.
SQL Error State:01000, Native Error Code: 1647, ODBC Error: [Microsoft]
[ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Changed language setting to us_english.
Can anyone tell me what are these error codes means? Are there any settings on the SQL server that I forgot to set?
Thanks

Could someone please explain to me the client configuration utility in plain English please.
I have VB applications installed on the sales force`s laptops that log onto SQL Server through RAS and an ODBC connection. The client configuration utility is not installed on their machines, but everything works fine.
The BOL say that when installing utilities, the user is given the option of selecting the net-library to use. I am not, when installing it on my NT Workstation, or W95 Operating system.
The BOL also state that the control panel has an entry to allow selecting which protocol to use. I cannot see it
Who needs the client configuration utility installed, obviously not the clients, is it just the people who want enterprise manager on their desktops ?
I am completely confused by this application
This is the one area of SQL Server where I am lost, help !

OK, I'm stumped and could do with some help. I have a laptop running Vista (64bit) with the SQL 2005 client tools. At home, I have SQL Server 2000 running on Windows Server 2003. I cannot get the SQL 2005 to talk to the SQL Server 2000. At work, we have SQL 2000 running on NT 5.0 and it connects fine. I also have a second laptop with SQL 2000 client tools running on XP SP2 which conects fine to the SQL 2000 instance on the 2003 box.
The vista laptop talks to the 2003 server, so it's not simpy that there is no connection. Any ideas why I keep getting an error stating that the Server might not be accepting remote connections every time I try to connect the Vista machine to the SQL 2000 server? I can't connect either from the SQL management tool, nor via ODBC.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.

We recently migrated from SQL Server 7 to SQL Server 2005. Now there's a curious thing with some legacy applications. I have pasted some code below. Don't judge me, because like I said, it's legacy.
You can see, that I have two connection strings. One is commented and accessing via SQL Native Client. The other one is doing this through the old SQL Server driver. Funnily enough, when I use the new Native Client driver, the exception "Run-time error '-2147467259 (80004005)' [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Invalid attribute value" is thrown in the rsPorder2.Update line. With the old driver, this works just alright.
Is this a bug? Is there a way, to make the code run, because we don't want to search the whole application for other occurances, if not necessary.
Any insights would be greatly appreciated.
Best regards,
DD

I've installed the SQL Server Native Client, and I included the optional SDK components. Only the x86 versions of opends60.lib and sqlncli.lib get installed, not the x64 (or amd64) versions. Any idea where I can get ahold of these?

Hi,
I currently have SQL2005 Std, using 2 separate domain accounts for both SQL server and SQL agent. When accessing the MSDB stored packages folder from mgmt studio, I get the following error:
Client unable to establish connection.
Encryption not supported on SQL server.
I did google for this error, but have tried all suggestions, including updating the MsDtsSvr.ini.xml file with the servername. I am using a default instance.
Also, I am only able to access the MSDB folder if I set the SQL service account to the local admin account. I have also set the SQL service account to be part of the local admins group, but without any luck.
TIA.
