From Excel File Into MS SQL Server
Jul 23, 2005
I need to find a way to upload an Excel file into an MS SQL database
using a web control front end. I have my ASP.Net control (using C#)
uploading a file to a directory, but the server people now tell me that
I cannot have a writeable area for the web and have a DTS see it as this
is too much of a security risk. So, I need a way to read the file
directly into the database. I've no idea how to do this. Does anyone
have ideas? I know loading MS Office into the web server is out of the
question. The webserver and database server are not the same physical
machine.
Thanks.

I have the Excel Connection Manager and Source to read the contents from an Excel file. For some reason couple of numeric fields from the Excel worksheet are brought over as nulls even though they have a value of 300 and 150. I am not sure why this is happening. I looked into the format of the fields and they are set to General in Excel, I tried setting them to numeric and that did not help.
All the other content from the excel file is coming thru except for the 2 numeric fields.
I tried to bring the contents from the excel source to a text file in csv format and for some reason the 2 numeric fields came out as blank.
Any inputs on getting this addressed will be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Manisha

I am trying to link an excel file as a linked server. I tried two methods unsuccessfully.
first: using
EXEC sp_addlinkedserver 'Ex',
'Jet 4.0',
'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0',
'c:list5.xls',
NULL,
'Excel 5.0'
GO
When I run
EXEC sp_tables_ex Ex, I get the error below.
Server: Msg 7303, Level 16, State 2, Procedure sp_tables_ex, Line 20
Could not initialize data source object of OLE DB provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0'.
[OLE/DB provider returned message: Cannot start your application. The workgroup information file is missing or opened exclusively by another user.]
Second: I link the excel file using ODBC datasource:
EXEC sp_tables_ex mylink, works fine with mylink being the linked server name. I get the table names eg. table1$, table2$.... However when I try to query the tables, I get this error:
Server: Msg 7313, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Invalid schema or catalog specified for provider 'MSDASQL'.
thanks

I am using a Excel Source to get the data from an excel file to sql server 2005 table. A couple columns are coming in a double precision float, but some values have characters in them, but those values are coming out as null, even though I changed the datatype from float to unicode string. Hello,
I am new to this sql server reporting server technology. I have a requirement like the table header should repeat in all pages of the exported excel's print preview. So I have created the header columns with fixed lenths as same as table's header in the page header of the report. Then only the Header will repeat in all pages of the print preview.
But the problem is when doing like this, many of the columns have been merged together. The report layout is ok. But cant sort the data. It says a message "This operation requires the merged cells to be identically sized."
In some forms i have found the header control's edges need to be sized identically with the tables' columns edges. I did it. But still the columns are merged when exporting.
Please help me out from this.
Thanks in advance.

Dear All,
I am writing a procedure to import daily the customer excel file to SQL server 2000, I managed to do that where the excel file will be imported directly to the SQL server after creating the new data table, & then I need to read the created table & import it row by row to my original data table. The problem:
I. The original excel file has the following:a. a protection passwordb. The contents has two merged headers (which effecting the import procedure)c. And last line is a totals line
Before importing the file I have manually to remove (a – b & c)!!
The Solution:
II. I am trying to find a way to do the above points automatically inside the project.
III. Also I thought of importing the excel file to a DataGrid first then:a. Let the user approve the file contents &b. Remove manually point (I.b.) above (I don’t now how yet, need to try it).c. Then import the DataGrid the the SQL server.
I think I prefer solution (III), any suggestions are highly appreciated

Hi, recently I encountered the following problem:
I tried to execute a stored procedure on the newly installed SQL 2005 Server (now on x64 Win Server 2003) which imports an Excel-File into a DB table.
We use OPENROWSET to access the Excel data. But I recognized this is dependent on Jet OLE DB which seems is not available for x64 windows.
Is there another way to import excel data using a stored procedure.
thank you in advance, rene

I have database tables for
Stores
StoreId, Name
Products
ProductId, Name
Transactions
TransactionId, StoreId, ProductId
I was just given an excel file with a list of 300 Stores.
I need to find out if these stores are selling our products and if they are , how many products they are selling.
One way of doing this , that I can think of right now is individually querying the Transactions table for each of the store in the excel sheet and then copy the results output back to the excel sheet.
Is there a way I can write a query against all the Store names from the excel file ? I need to get this done in the next few hours.

I have a requirement of generating an "Sales Report" excel file and mailing that file to a particular email id. I have generated the excel file through bcp command and mail is working fine.
However formatting of excel file is required by end user for eg. Cells to be merged and borders to be given for cells for which i think bcp command will not work.

Hi ;
I am trying to create several Excel sheets using SQL 2000 views like so:
Select * INTO [Excel 8.0;Database="C:spreadSheetsaNew.xls"] FROM [aView].
When I try and execute this in my app I get the following - Specified owner
name 'Excel 8.0;Database=c:spreadSheetsaNew.xls' either does not exist or
you do not have permission to use it.
If I use the above Select statement with an OLEDB connection it works.
I am using Imports System.Data.SqlClient, instantiating a new SQlConnection
object, opening the connection, etc..
Thanks,

Hi,
I need to export data from a table of SQL server 2000 database, into an Excel 2000 sheet. I tried following query from the sql query analyzer
Code SnippetSELECT * INTO [Excel 4.0;Database=F:ew.xls].[sheet1] FROM tab1
It gave me following error
Code SnippetServer: Msg 2760, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Specified owner name 'Excel 4.0;Database=F:ew.xls' either does not exist or you do not have permission to use it.
The F:ew.xls file is present and it has no additional security applied, hence I think it should be writable.
Please tell me where am I doing wrong.
I don't know if this is the correct news group or not. Let me know if I have to post to some other news group.

I have an excel file that is stored in a sharepoint document library. I am trying to use SSIS to import it into a SQL database. I use the excel connection manager with a sharepoint UNC path. When I run it from BIDS, it runs successfully. When I run it from a job, I get an error
"It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view and write its data"
It is definitely not open by anyone else, and I have full permissions to the file. ALSO, the SQL Agent and Service acct which the job runs under, has full permissions to the file. I have tried running it under a proxy account with my user account, but it fails with the same message. Further, I can run a DIR command from a command prompt to list the sharepoint directory contents successfully, but when I run the same command from SSMS using xp_cmdshell, it fails with access denied. Again, the SQL Service acct has full rights to the sharepoint site.
I notice when i browse to the sharepoint document library and try to open the folder with "Open with Windows Explorer", it always asks me to login and I'm thinking that is related to the problem I am having - that it doesn't automatically pick up the windows authentication.

We are not certain if this has happened due to the SSIS FTP Task, but incidently the Excel file that is being copied from the FTP site using an SSIS FTP Task got corrupted a couple hours after the package was scheduled as a SQL Server Agent Job on SQL Server 2005.
I had a SQL Server 2000 DTS package doing the same thing, but it was never an issue then. I was using the FTP Task there along with an Excel Data source in that and has been working for a couple years atleast with never any corruption related issues.
In the SSIS SQL Server 2005 package I am using an FTP Task with an Excel Connection Manager and Excel source and the Excel file got corrupted within a couple hours of the package being scheduled as a SQL Server Agent job.
Has anyone experienced this issue? Any inputs will be appreciated.
Just as an fyi, the excel file has a lot of vlookups.
Thanks,
MShah
