Fully Qualified Query Accross Databases

Sep 21, 2007

Are there any perfmonace or query optimization limitations or issues that arise when issueing a fully qualified query across multiple databases on the same Instance of SQL Server. In other words are all features of query optimization fully supported in queries that span databases on the same Instance.

Not Fully Qualified Files

May 24, 2006

Hi all,

I need to create flat file connection managers. The connection Manager editor forces me to use fully qualified file names. Is there a possibility to use unqualified file names, because I need to reference to files in different directories with the identical file strcture.

Any Ideas?

Schema, Owner And Fully Qualified Name

Mar 27, 2008

I have a database that has been upgraded from SQL 200 to 2005. The database was owned by 'Joe' and all objects were also owned by 'Joe'. In SQL 2000 when Joe logged in he could simply issue 'select * from table' and would get results.

The upgraded db now has a user Joe and a schema Joe. All objects now belong to the schema Joe. Joe the user has his default schema set to Joe and he is the owner of the schema. When Joe logs in and tries to 'select * from table' he gets an invalid object. He can 'select * from joe.table'.

How can I set it up so that the objects are still owned by the schema Joe and a simple 'select * from table' works when user Joe logs in? I was convinced that is he owned the schema and this was his default schema it should work.

Thanks

How To Extract The Filename From A FULLY QUALIFIED NAME?

Nov 29, 2007

hi folks,

i am using foreach loop to load a whole load of files.
but these files are placed into various folders and with distinctive names.

each file is name is certain conventions that imply what sort of data is held in it. like

marketing_extract_20071204.csv
customers_extract_20071224.csv

but within the foreach loop i have a variable with the FULLY QUALIFIED NAME (FQN)as in:

Y:data_filesmarketing_extract_20071204.csv

thus i would like to find out how i can extract the filename from the FQN?

could i use a derived column expression or a script task?

many thanks for your assistance,

Static Analysis Of Scripts Not Containing A SQL Object Fully Qualified Name?

Mar 21, 2008

Hello everyone...

Our team has a DBA governing body that refuses to accept any T-SQL script that our dev group writes where fully qualified names of the objects aren't used. These non fully named objects in scripts just aren't accepted in their world.

So, all the scripts the developers now have to write must have fully qualified names in them. Of course, the Query analyser in Managment Studio could care less about object names as long as ambiguity is not found. So, I need some sort of Static Code analysis of these scripts that my team creates in order to hand them over to our DBA's to run.

The DBA's intend to make this inspection a manual process (they have time to kill I guess)... but my team doesn't have that luxury. It is not easy to ensure all scripts have this qualification in them with some many of them being written.

Does anyone know of any algorithim, tool, or options that could help me detect the presence of non-fully qualified names in T-SQL scripts?

Thanks for any ideas...
Ron D.

Sqlcmd With Trusted Connection And IP Address Or Fully Qualified Hostname

Nov 9, 2006

The command sqlcmd seems to fail when using trusted connection and an IP address or a fully qualified hostname. For example:

sqlcmd -E -S nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn

where nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn is the real IP address of the machine, or

sqlcmd -E -S hostname.domain.com

where hostname.domain.com is the fully qualified hostname of the machine, gives the error:

Msg 18452, Level 14, State 1, Server 380GX280B05, Line 1
Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server c
onnection.

On the other hand, sqlcmd -E -S 127.0.0.1 works, and so does sqlcmd -E -S hostname, or sqlcmd -E -S tcp:hostname,1433.

This is on a clean machine, with SQL Server 2005 freshly installed as Administrator with mixed authentication, and the test runned also by Administrator.

Is it normal or is it a bug?

Thanks.

One Or More Of The Server Network Addresses Lacks A Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN).

Jun 11, 2007

Hello Guys,

I had been trying to solve this error with no success :

One or more of the server network addresses lacks a fully qualified domain name (FQDN). Specify the FQDN for each server, and click Start Mirroring again.

The syntax for a fully-qualified TCP address is:
TCP://<computer_name>.<domain_segment>[.<domain_segment>]:<port>

I had installed three instances on my local machine to test Data base mirroring :

Principal : running SQL Developer Instance

Mirror : running SQL Developer Instance .

Witness : Running SQL Express.

Database mirroring already enabled using startup flag : -T1400

i even tried to configure it with out a witness but still have the same error .

I used the follwoing server name in the mirroring wizard(not localhost) :

Principal : TCP://Ali-laptop:5022

Mirrored : TCP://Ali-laptop:5023

Witness : TCP://Ali-laptop:5044

whats the problem guys?!

Creating A Database From Multiple Databases Accross Multiple Servers

Sep 13, 2007

Hi,

I'm trying to create a database that takes specific information from a number of databases on different servers to make some reporting that we have much easier.

I'm pretty new to SQL so I'm not sure of the best way to proceed. I read an article that suggested I use the OPENROWSET command. The problem is, the version of SQL that came with one of the programmes we use is limited and will not allow you to turn on the allow "Ad Hoc distributed Queries" so the SLQ statement will not execute.

I'm confused why it won't let me to connect through ODBC as I've created a web page that selects data from this database with no problems!

Here is the SQL statement that I've written to make sure it is the correct one (on the msdn library page it said that this was the ODBC connection):

SELECT a.*
FROM OPENROWSET('MSDASQL','DRIVER=(SQL Server);SERVER=APPOLOACT7;UID=sa;PWD=***************',
'SELECT * FROM MDCTestAndDev.dbo.TBL_CONTACT') AS a

I've also created the ODBC connection using the tool on Administration Tools>Data Sources ODBC

Any help would be greatly appreciated (also any ways of selecting from one database and inserting it into another will be helpfull)

Thanks

How To Copy Columns Accross Tables

In my database "DOJ" I have a table named "DOJGRAB" with ALL my data fresh from a import using DTS.

Also in "DOJ" are 6 other tables (NAME, PERSON, etc...)

How can I parse the columns out from my DOJGRAB table to fill existing columns in my other 6 tables? Basically a copy of specific columns from DOJGRAB to their proper places in the other tables.

Can somebody post an example of the syntax I would use to copy a column from one table to another? Thanks!

Joins Accross Servers And Time Outs

Nov 28, 2006

First thanks for your time.

We have 4 clustered SQL2000 Servers each contains information specific to its application related to customer information in a casino player tracking database. My problem is as follows On the Playertracking database I can join and return information from the tables there with no problems the performance accross the decently sizable transactional based table is pretty decent. The problem is I need to filter this query down by the Type of machine the customer plays. The child key exists in the playertransaction table the parent key is on another server. Here is the lay out of the tables unecessary information from the tables were truncated for brevity.

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[PlayerSession] (
[PlayerId] [int] NOT NULL ,
[Mnum] [int] NOT NULL ,
[CoinIn] [money] NOT NULL ,
[CoinOut] [money] NOT NULL ,
[Games] [int] NOT NULL ,
[Jackpot] [money] NULL ,
[Win] [money] NULL ,
[TheoWin] [money] NOT NULL ,
[PlayerMod] [tinyint] NOT NULL
) ON [PRIMARY]

-- Player Demographics information
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[Player] (
[PlayerId] [int] NOT NULL ,
[Status] [char] (1) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL ,
[Title] [varchar] (5) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL ,
[FirstName] [varchar] (40) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL ,
[MiddleName] [varchar] (40) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL ,
[LastName] [varchar] (40) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL ,
[SSN] [varchar] (16) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL ,
) ON [PRIMARY]

--Machine Information that links to Machine Type table

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[Machine] (
[MNum] [int] NOT NULL ,
[MachineTypeId] [smallint] NOT NULL ,
) ON [PRIMARY]

-- Machine type code table

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[MachineType] (
[MachineTypeId] [smallint] NOT NULL ,
[Denom] [int] NOT NULL ,
[Par] [decimal](6, 2) NOT NULL ,
[GameType] [varchar] (40) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL ,
) ON [PRIMARY]

From the server where all the player information is ran I can query the linked database for the machine and machine type information like this.

SELECT m.MNum, mt.MachineTypeId, mt.GameType, mt.DisplayType
FROM ACCTV.Accounting.dbo.Machine m INNER JOIN
ACCTV.Accounting.dbo.MachineType mt ON m.MachineTypeId = mt.MachineTypeId

This is the information I am trying to get out but the query times out on me.

SELECT Player.PlayerId, Player.FirstName, Player.LastName, SUM(PlayerSession.CoinIn) AS sumCI, SUM(PlayerSession.CoinOut) AS SumCO,SUM(PlayerSession.TheoWin) AS SumTheo, AVG(PlayerSession.TheoWin) AS AvgTheo, SUM(PlayerSession.Win) AS SumWin, AVG(PlayerSession.Win) AS AvgWin, mt.GameType
FROM Player INNER JOIN
PlayerSession ON Player.PlayerId = PlayerSession.PlayerId INNER JOIN
ACCT.Accounting.dbo.Machine M ON PlayerSession.Mnum = M.MNum INNER JOIN
ACCT.Accounting.dbo.MachineType mt ON M.MachineTypeId = mt.MachineTypeId
GROUP BY Player.PlayerId, Player.FirstName, Player.LastName, mt.GameType

The other option would be some sort of SubQuery but I dont know how to return results from the subqueries to the root query to be returned to the restulting recordset. I am not necessarily looking for an answer more of looking for a direction to go to find my solution.

Thanks again for your help.

Table Snapshots Accross Multiple Servers

Apr 20, 2007

Hi,

Is there a way to take a snapshot of a table at precisely the same time on multiple servers and write the table snapshot to another 'work' database? I'm asking in this forum hoping that perhaps SSIS has a built in tool to help with this. I'm wanting to audit table(s) accross seven different servers. In order to do this I want to make sure that I have the table at the same moment in time on all the servers. I plan on using the tablediff utility to then compare each table on each server against one another. If somebody knows a better method to do this please let me know.

Thanks,

I understood that this string is the full qualified name of the assembly, so will it be different when I create it on another P.C or it is fixed on all P.Cs ?

select * from dbo.Account

I get this error,

The table name is not valid. [ Token line number (if known) = 1,Token line offset (if known) = 19,Table name = account ]

Cross Referance DB Objects Accross Store Procs

We are in the midst of cleaning up database01. There are objects in database01 that are widely used in store procedures that reside in database02.

Problem is: I need to know which tables and view from database01 are in use by store procedures in database02. This is important because if I accidently decommission tables that are currently in use by production class s-procedures, it will not be pretty. A sample output could look like:

StoreProc UsingObject
sp001 ctblCodeName
sp002 tblUnitSales
so003 tblSalesTrans
.......... .................

I am not a programmer and none of our programmers here claim that there is any solution to this problem without spending thousands on s/w licenses. Any simple solution + code snippet that will help me resolve this problem by myself would be incredibly valuable.

Detect Anomalies Like Exceptional Swings Accross Aggregations?

Nov 9, 2007

Hello,
Not sure if data minimg can help me solving this type of inquiries. Thanks in advance for any pointers you could provide me.
Problem:
We have many dimensions with many levels. Sales directors will sometimes note a drop or a spike when looking at one of the dimensions members, most of the time at a high level.
Example, For Q4 07, the aggregation of Q4 Billing plus remaining Q4 Backlog dropped by $10M in America for the Automotive business from week 4 to week 5 while it was forecasted to remain stable.
The immediate question that will be sent to the guys in charge of this business is "What happened?".
Obviously evyone struggle to answer these questions eveytine there is a drop anywhere.
Using classic tools, they will try to spot a single anomaly or determine if this is accross the board and what are the concurent factors like lower than expected shipments combined with some orders cancellations.
The drop-off can lie in a single product or customer location, in which case it is fairly easy while time consuming to spot the anomaly using classic drill-down approach.
The drop-off can also be more wide spread or caused by a combination of factors like unable to ship in time, orders cancellations and sales credits in which case it is more difficult to spot where is the anomaly and explain it.
So I wonder if there is any way that I could use data mining to make the entire process of detecting anomalies accross dimensions levels, members and measures more straight-forward for end-users.
What do you think?
Thanks,
Philippe

Using Qualified Stored Procedure Name With SqlDataSource

Sep 15, 2006

I am trying to populate a GridView from a stored procedure. The stored procedure's schema name is not the same as the user id logged into the database. In the SqlDataSource wizard, I am able to select the stored procedure name (unqualified), but Test SQL fails: "Could not find stored procedure 'devSelLineOverview'." Running the page also fails with the same error.Well, of course, because the procedure name must be qualified as line16l2.devSelLineOverview. However, the wizard doesn't pick up the schema name and I'm unable to change it there. So I changed it in the page source, but then I get this error: "Invalid object name 'line16l2.devSelLineOverview'." I tried changing the command type to custom SQL statement (not a stored procedure) but that deleted all the select parameters. Here is the data source, with the qualified name. I've also tried [line16l2.devSelLineOverview] (Could not find stored procedure) and [line16l2].[devSelLineOverview] (Invalid object name).<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:PlantMetricsConnectionString %>"SelectCommand="line16l2.devSelLineOverview" SelectCommandType="StoredProcedure"><SelectParameters><asp:ControlParameter ControlID="date" Name="date" PropertyName="Text" Type="DateTime" /><asp:ControlParameter ControlID="shift" Name="shift" PropertyName="SelectedValue"Type="Byte" /><asp:ControlParameter ControlID="SKU" Name="sku" PropertyName="Text" Type="String" /><asp:ControlParameter ControlID="Lot" Name="lot" PropertyName="Text" Type="String" /></SelectParameters></asp:SqlDataSource>Thanks,Stephanie Giovannini

I have a login XXX mapped to the user XXX.

When I connect to the SQL Server using login XXX and execute the query.

Select * from A, it throws be an error saying that"Invalid Object Name A".

Now when I modify the select statement specifying the schema it works. i.e. Select * from XXX.A

In the former case, is it not that SQL Server tries to search for the table in the current user's account and then if it not available it look's in the dbo's account.

HOw can I make a select without specifying the schema ?

I am using SQL Server 2005.

Thanks & Regards
Imtiaz

Data Synchronization Accross Multiple Servers Running Replication

Apr 19, 2007

Hello,

We have an environment with 7 servers that are running replication with one another and I'm wondering if there are any tools or experiences that any of you might have that may assist in the auditing of these servers. The data should be in synch accross the boards for all tables, but sometimes problems can arise such as replication not being set up properly, stored procedure's being out of synch, or data gliches etc.

In dealing with these issues we have an in-house written program which analises each table on each server and takes a snapshot and does column by column compare. We also have another program that will synch the data up (basically a delete/insert statement on the publisher). This process can take up to 3 weeks for our quarterly update of every table. I'm wondering if anybody has used any tools such as in SSIS or a third party tool and has done or is doing something similar to what we are doing now. If so, are there any tips you wouldn't mind sharing on how our process might be sped up?

Thanks,

Phil

RAM Not Being Fully Used?

Dec 6, 2007

Hello All,

We have a server running Windows Server 2003 with SQL Server 2005, it also does some minor file-sharing usage.
I noticed that the over 3/4 of our 2GB of RAM was being used by SQL and the pagefile was over 1.5GB constantly.
Needless to say this caused performance issues, so I upgraded to 4 GB of RAM.
However it would seem that nothing has changed.
The same amount of RAM is being committed to SQL resulting in the same size pagefile and 2GB of unused memory.
Should my Windows Processor Scheduling and Memory Usage be set to Programs or Background Services/System Cache for best performance and best usage of memory with SQL server?
Also when I look at the MS SQL server properties, what should these settings be for best performance and memory usage as they are currently set to:
NOT use AWE to allocate memory
0MB - minimum server memory
2147483647MB - maximum server memory
0KB - Index creation memory
1024KB - minimum memory per query

Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

When Will It Be Fully Supported?

Mar 23, 2006

Having sucessfully tested mirroring, I've suggested we should implement it at my place of work.

However, they are non too pleased that it is not yet officialy part of SQL Server 2005 and therefore not supported, does anyone know when it will be in standard edition? because I really really need to know...

Thanks
