Generate Values Between A Starting And Stopping Point (time Values).

Given the starting and stopping points (time values), how do I generate values between these points.
For example, if I have 08 (representing Hour) as a starting point and 12 as a stopping point.
From this I would like to generate a data sequence like 08, 09, 10, 11, and 12.
So how do I accomplish this? In SQL or in the RS?
The only thing I can think of is using a WHILE loop and a temporary table in SQL (not to keen on doing this).

When our rep distribution services time-out (several times a day) some dba's just restart the service while others restart the rep job which starts the service. Are there any differences between these two methods? Does restarting the service inherit any changes made to the job's attributes?

I am importing an excel spreadsheet into a MS SQL database table. When the spreadsheet is finished importing, I am noticing that some values that were brought in resemble something like this 1.41666666666667. Other values may be shorter or only have 1 digit. The problem is another web application that pulls this data for use in online forms only allows up to 2 digits. How can I round all of the numbers like the above to 2 decimals and replace the existing values?
I know there is the rounding function that could be used like so:
SELECT ROUND ([Hrs Total 2],2)
FROM AnnualClassifiedPAFs
How do I then take that rounded value and insert it back into the records?

My problem is primarily with SQL backup but the instant question is with mirroring in SQL 2005. I have a log file that is out of control and I need to do a backup with truncate_only, but this is command is evidently disallowed while mirroring is enabled. Is it possible to temporarily deactivate or remove mirroring in order to get the backup log under control? Is it possible to do that and then 'resume' mirroring?
A secondary issue is that I don't think mirroring is actually working at this point in time anyway. In the Mirroring section of the database properties the Status window says "No connection: cannot connect to the mirror server instance," so the question of stopping and restarting may be moot.
How does one reestablish mirroring if the connection is lost?
Lots of questions, I know... I'm reading up on it, but I'm obviously not the guy who set it up in the first place! Thanks in advance for any help...

hello everyone,
I wonder if you can help me with a problem I have trying to support a web based application that uses SQL 2005.
The problem is that the application developers tell me that it is neccessary to stop and restart the SQL service as part of the troubleshooting process when their application stops working. Unfortunately, the customer has our application database on a clustered SQL instance that is used by other applications so they cannot just stop and restart the SQL service because this will have a major impact on all the other instances...
Is there another way that would effectively do the same thing as stopping and restarting the SQL service? I have read that dettaching and re-attaching might do the same but application developers say onlt stopping/restarting services is sufficient to break the connection with the application.
Any advice would be really welcome as I am completely new to SQL and struggling with this!

Say we need to replicate between 2 databases using transactional replication
So we create a publication on the first server and initialse the publication agent so that it takes a snapshot and starts the log reader to capture the transactions being keyed into it.
Then say we create a pull subscription from the second database but lets say we assume we already have the data from thepublication database already in it so no need to app,ly a snapshot over it, when the pull subscription starts we assume that only transactions in the log reader that occured AFTER the pull subscription was started would be applied. Is this correct?
Then say we need to stop the pull subscription for a short period then start it again (let say so that we can take a back up of the subscriber database and restore the database somewhere else and replication set up between these 2 with no chance of data being althered before the restore had finished) can someone confirm when we start the pull subscription again all the transactions that occurred during the stopped period will be applied when it is started again OR will it be the case that only the transactions since the pull subscription was restarted will be applied

I am trying to start & stop SQL server through the command line so I can start & stop it as a scheduled task. Are there any switches for sqlmangr.exe I can use? Maybe another way?

Hi guys
I've been dealing with a few problems with SQL Server 2005.
We don't want to give our DBA's local administrator access to the servers so we had a problem with SSIS which I managed to resolve by adding their global group into the local DCOm group and modifying the security properties of MsDtsServer.
Another problem I've come across is when you log into Management Studio as an account that has local administrator access to the server you have the Green symbol next to the registered server, you can then right click and Stop, Restart services etc.
If I log into Management Studio with an account that has full SQL sysadmin rights but not local administrator rights to the server then the Green symbol doesn't appear and the Stop, restart options are all greyed out - all other functionality appears okay, they just seem to lose the ability to remotely stop and start services.
All of the above is with Windows Firewall turned off, if the user has local administrator rights but the SQL Server has the Windows Firewall switched on they are unable to remotely stop and restart services.
Port 1433 is open on the firewall and program execptions are there for sqlbrowse.exe
Anyone come across this particular problem before?
Any help would be appreciated.

Hello:
We have a new sales force automation application for sales rep to log their contacts, etc. It runs on mssql 6.5, sp 4.
They log in and leave their connections on without logging off or leave their coonections idle .
We set the user connections fiarly high but we are concerned that the max amount of user connections weill be consumed and the sql serve becomes locked.
My questions are:
1) Is there any parameter in the sql server configuration that will log off idle users have a certain time and dsiconnect them?
2) A backup of the database will be made each night. If there is no parameter, would it be a good idea to stop and start the sql server every night to release the idle connections?
3) If so, how to stop sql server from the commadn and start it with a command line command and do this in a batch file as a scheduled task?
4) Is there any other way to release these idle connections each night?
Any information you can supply will be appreciated. THanks.

Hello all,
First off, I appreciate the time that those of you reading and responding to this request are offering. My quesiton is a theoretical and hopefully simple one, and yet I have been unable to find an answer to it on other searches or sources.
Here's the situation. I am working with SQL Server 2005 on a Windows Server 2003 machine. I have a series of databases, all of which are in Full recovery mode, using a backup device for the full database backups and a separate device for the log backups. The full backups are run every four days during non-business hours. The log backups are run every half hour.
Last week, one of my coworkers found that some rarely-used data was unavailable, and wanted to restore a database to a point in time where the data was available. He told me that point in time was some time back in November.
To accomplish this, I restored the database (in a separate database, as to not overwrite my production database) using the Point in Time Recovery option. I selected November from the "To a point in time" window (I should note that this window is always grey, never white like most active windows, it seems), and the full database backup and the subsequent logs all became available in the "Select the backup sets to restore" window.
I then tried a bevy of different options from the "Options" screen. However, every restore succeeds (ie: it doesn't error out), but seems to be bringing the database back to a current point in time. It's never actually going back to the point in time I specify.
My questions are as follows:
a) Is it possible to do a point in time recovery to a point in time BEFORE the last full database backup?
b) If so, what options would you recommend I use? (ie: "Overwrite the existing database", restore with recovery, etc etc).
I again appreciate any and all advice I receive, and I look forward to hearing from anyone and everyone on this topic. Thank you.

Hey all,
1) I have a report with many parameters that I want users to be able to pick from. Allow them to pick 1, many or all to build their report dynamically. I'm all set on the TSQL side, but on the Reporting Services side I have to allow each parameter to be null with a default of NULL. In by doing this, the report will auto run, which I do not want to happen. The only resolution I've found thus far was by adding a parameter that does nothing, with a NULL default value. Yet It sticks out like a sore thumb on the report and I want to get rid of it. If I check in "Hidden" in the parameter options, my report errors out stating that the parameter requires a value.
2) Is it possible to have a parameter that has available values from a dataset have a NULL checkbox like those of parameters that do not have available values?
3) Is it possible to add back/forward buttons inside of a report instead of just at the report header by default?

What's a good starting point to learning the native c++ OLEDB structure for accessing SQL Server Compact databases? I see several links into the msdn library, but the library seems to hold a ton of links with little to no actual content. I just need to learn how to do the basics...open a database and run simple queries (select, insert, and update). The examples look incredibly convoluted and don't seem to make sense.
I will be developing for a console program in windows ce 5 on VS2005 if that helps, so I don't need all the windows gui code.

I am creating a table on SQL Server. One of the columns in this new table contains whole integer as wells as decimal values (i.e. 4500 0.9876). I currently have this column defined as Decimal(12,4). This adds 4 digits after the decimal point to the whole integers. Is there a data type that will have the decimal point only for decimal values and no decimal point for the whole integers?

I'm new to SQL and have a problem with the following script:-
INSERT INTO organisation_links (organisation_number_1, organisation_number_2, relationship, amended_on, amended_by)
VALUES 2311, 19219, 'BRAN', '01/12/2007', 'Jon')
The above script works OK on a one-off basis but....
Basically, organisation_number_2 (i.e. 19219) always stays the same. However, I need to update organisation_number_1 several times (i.e. 2311 will then change to 2312, 2313, 2314 etc.).
Rather than pasting the script several hundred times and changing the organisation_number_1 value each time, is there a quick way to encompass all the organisation_number_1 values in one go?
I've tried e.g. VALUES (2311,2312), 19219, 'BRAN' etc. but this doesn't seem to work.

Hello, I have an issue where I need to format the way my times are stored in my table to the way I can compare those times with the current time given by:
select right(convert(varchar,getdate(),100),7)
this provides a result like: 2:10PM
But my times are stored like: 2:10 P.M.
so, Im thinking i need to format the saved time in order to compare it to the current time so I can do the following select:
select * where startTime > (
select right(convert(varchar,getdate(),100),7)
)

When Access date/time data is transformed to SQL7, it seems to work fine as long as the data contains date information. But, if the data is time only, there is the 2-day diff. coming out of Access.
For date/time data in Access, day 0 is 12/30/1899--for SQL7 it is 1/1/1900.
So, it appears that DTS first converts Access date/time data to a date formatted string and then sends to SQL. This will only be a problem for times....8:00 AM is stored to SQL as 8:00 AM on 12/30/1899, not 1/1/1900. If I try to calculate hours or minutes from midnight (date/time 0) I get a negative number.
Has anyone else encountered this? I guess my choice is to modify DTS to correct for the dates or to run an update once the data is moved.

I am trying to find the time diff between dCDServerTime of the "first" ntype = 1 and the "first" ntype = 96. There can be any number of rows with 1 and 96 but rows with 1 always come before those with 96.
I tried by putting a subset of the above result into a table variable but don't seem to get ahead without declaring more variables.

Hi - I am a bit of an amatuer, but I am trying to use the EMS data Pump to get all of the data out of an Interbase 6 DB into an MSDE DB. I have managed to instal an Interbase ODBC driver, and I ca connect to it and then automatically create the tables in my MSDE DB, but I get an error stating that there cannot be multiple Timestamp columns in the MSDE databse. Is this true ?

How to count the number of values that exist in a row based on the values from an array of numbers. Basically the the array of numbers I want to look for are in row 1 of table [test 1] and I want to search for them and count the "out of" in table [test 2]. Excuse me for not using the easiest way to convey my question below. I guess in short I have 10 numbers and like to find how many of those numbers exist in each row. short example:

I am trying to think my way through a solution which I believe others have probably come across... I am trying to implement a matching routine wherein I need to match an address against a high value and a low value (or, for that matter an input date vs. a start and end date) to return the desired row ... i.e. if I were to use a straight vb program I would just use the following lookup:

My question, then, is how would you perform this type of query using a lookup / merge join or script? I have not found a way to implement a way to set the input columns? I can set the straight matches without a problem, i.e. lookup zip code = input zip code, but can't think of the correct way to set comparisons, i.e. lookup value 1 <= input value AND lookup value 2 >= input value
Any suggestions?
