i'm using a foreach loop container to read a group of excel files and pass their information to a Sql Server database. The process runs well but sometimes there could be some excel files that may not be processed correctly so i'm using transacctions to continue to process on the other files, But i'd like to generate a message everytime an excel file is or not processed. I thought that i could generate a flat file to do it, but is there any other way to accomplish this? I'm also generating a log file (on xml format), but It seems too much information for an end-user.
I am rewriting several stored procedures that originally had lots of "multiplicated" code. I am aware that references to objects within dynamic SQL do not create dependencies, so I intend to add code that will generate the dependencies but will NOT produce any output in both the Results and Messages tabs, not be overly "messy" or complicated, and have the least impact on execution plan creation as possible.
As we use a dependency list of tables used to our support staff pinpoint possible data issues associated with each of these stored procedures.

My understanding is that in a stored procedure (or any code for thatmatter) if an error occurs you can detect it by checking @@errorvariable and raise your own error with raiserror statement.The problem is that the original error is not suppressed. Fine. Now what I want to do is catch all OnInformation events generated for the package, and disgard all apart from a subset, whose message contains a particular string. So the Q is, how do I/can I interrogate the message for the event that my handler has just caught?
Michael Coles has come up with a neat method of overriding sp_dts_addlogentry, (http://blogs.sqlservercentral.com/blogs/michael_coles/archive/2007/10/09/3012.aspx), but I want to do this within the package, not outside, to avoid the change becoming global to every package writing to the same sysdtslog90.
Hello guys,I need some ideas on how to handle an exception or a user defined error message.I have a procedure that creates a new user. Lets say if the e-mail address entered is already in use. What are some of the best practices for notifying the user that the e-mail address is already in use?This is what I was thinking....Solution #1--------------My proc will raise an error with a message id that is great than 50000, then my DAL will recognize this is a user defined error and spit back to the user instead of trapping it.Solution #2--------------The proc should have an output param ( @CreationStatus CHAR(1) ).If the @CreationStatus has a value for example "E", I will have lookup the value for "E" in my app and spit back that custom error message. Hi all, We are displaying an SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services report in our ASP.NET 1.1 application by accessing the report through URL and embedding the same in an iframe HTML web control. The user can export the report contents into CSV format by making use of the export functionality provided by Reporting Services. Now we have been asked to display a warning mesage to the user when the no. of records in the report exceeds 1 million i.e. if the no. of records in the report exceeds 1 million and the user tries to export the report to CSV format by clicking on the "Exprot" link button, we need to display a warning message to the user. My doubt is whether this can be done in Reporting Services. Are there any programmatic interfaces exposed by Reporting Services which might help us implement this requirement ?
When I am in Visual Studio 2005, and I try to add an SQL database, I get the following error "generating user instances in sql server is disabled. use sp_configure user instances enabled to generate user instances." I have recently returned to developing a website using Visual Web Developer Express 2008. I want to store information in a database. I have SQL Server 2005 Express edition installed on my pc. When I try to Add New Item -> SQL Database from VWD2008 by right clicking in the App-Data folder and completing the dialogue I get the following error message:

I've been playing around with building custom components for SSIS. I've been doing workflow for years (using Java and Oracle). The company I worked for had a framework for publishing data that allowed for user interaction. That's something I'd love to be able to do in SSIS.
Is it possible to create a custom task that interacts with the user at runtime? So, the user starts the SSIS package. At some point, the process pops up a dialog (Windows Form) that asks the user to set a date using a calendar control.

I'm developing an custom dataflow transformation task that involves mapping of columns between multiple inputs and outputs. All the mappings are stored in a dataset. At first I thought to store this to an variable but after reloading bids I get an schema not found on xml for the stored dataset. Then I tried to put the dataset into an custom property but that seems to only take strings.
So how do I save the info on the mappings contained in my dataset (as that is most easy while using a datagrid to display mappings) in the package preferably in a way that is not visible to the user.

I'm writing a custom source component that reads data from a SharePoint list with dynamic mapping to output columns. It's my first custom component and it's based on several samples and tutorials from Internet
Output columns are not created by the component itself, they must be added by user at design time. The component makes dynamically an association between SharePoint fields and available output columns at run-time (based on an mapping table).
I made a very basic skeleton and I encounter a problem when I add a column to output: it has no datatype and when I try to set one I have an the error Property value is not valid, The component xxxxxx does not allow setting output column datatype properties.

I am creating a custom transformation component, and a custom user interface for that component.
In my custom UI, I want to show the custom properties, and allow users to edit these properties similar to how the advanced editor shows the properties.
I know in my UI I need to create a "Property Grid". In the properties of this grid, I can select the object I want to display data for, however, the only objects that appear are the objects that I have already created within this UI, and not the actual component object with the custom properties.
How do I go about getting the properties for my transformation component listed in this property grid?
I have spent days searching the web and forums for an answer to this simple question and cannot find an example.
I have built a service broker application on sql server 2005. The application puts some xml on an incoming queue which is basically a few parameters to be used in a query. This queue will then call a stored proc which does some business logic and puts the resulting results in another queue also in xml.
I have written a test harness in SQL to put messages on the inbound queue and then some sql to retrieve the returned code from the outbound queue.
What I want to do is be able to convert the SQL which does this into .net code to be used by an application. i.e. write in .net some code to put xml on a queue and then write some .net code to retrieve xml from another queue.
I wouldn't have thought this would be a difficult thing to do and would have been done hundreds of times, but unable to find anything to simply send and retrieve XML to service broker queues....
thanks for your help.. its really needed. I found some links, but they are really vague and often doing select statments in service broker or something like this. I don't want to call any sql, just send and recieve XML on the queues.

I read the documentation and it says if we set the ExpressionType to CPET_NOTIFY, it should work, but it does not seem to work. Not sure if I am missing anything. Can someone please help me?
In the Editor of my custom task, under custom properties section, I expected a button with 3 dots, to click & pop-up so we can specify the expression or at least so it evaluates the variables if we give @[User::VaraibleName]
This is my first time to deploy an asp.net2 web site. Everything is working fine on my local computer but when i published the web site on a remote computer i get the error "Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to failure in retrieving the user's local application data path. I am developing a ASP.NET application using SQL Server as my database. I want to create a number that is unique.
The number will have 8 digits.
first 2 digits correspond to year. ex:04 or 03
the next 6 digits start with 000001 and it should get added for each new entry of data.

I have generated an SQL script such that when it is run, it will automatically create tables if not existing or drop the existing tables. The problem I have is that, is there any way I can also make the script create not only the tables but also transfer the data from the old database to the new database?

At present we are creating packages by dragging and dropping required componets from toolbox and configuring them manually. We have a requirement of creating around 300 packages every week. Manual creation of packages is really a nightmare.
