SQL Search :: Generating Dynamic Query

Jun 24, 2015

I have a table named "Persons"  which has the following columns [ Name ,Age, City]. I have a Windows app which has  3 textboxes for each column. My requirement is when I enter only name and enter the search button, I need result similar to this query.

select * from persons where name like '@tbname%'
when I enter only age and enter the search button, I need result similar to this query.
select * from persons where age =@tbage
when I enter name and city, I need result similar to this query.
select * from persons where name like '@tbname%' and city like '@tbcity%'

If I don't enter any fields and enter the serach button,  I need result similar to this query.

select * from persons for these 3 fields I might give any combination as above. But how can  I have a single query with all these combinations. I want a single query capable of doing this. I cannot have query like this, select * from persons where name like 'tbname%' and city like 'tbcity%' and age =@age

Because if I give only name,  city is considered as null nad age is considered as 0 and I get empty result. I cannot have Stored proc and I cannot do much in C# like using "selectqueryBuilder" etc. I need pure SQL query.

Generating A Datatable From Results Of A Dynamic Query?

Aug 25, 2004

I am developing a datagrid which will display a summary "report" of sales revenue grouped by a particular field. There will also be a drill-down on this field that will display in more detail the table of data that was used for the summary.

Because the user is selecting multiple criteria under which to run the search, I have created a dynamic query that gathers all the necessary data I need for both the drill down and the summary based on the variable parameters of the user. I've optimized the query that gathers the detailed data (taken from 7 tables) to execute far under a second.

So, that said, here's my question: It seems the most efficient way to get the summary data is to run it against the datatable (which gathers the detailed data) created by the dynamic query and just pass them both into a dataset. Can this be done? Originally, I was calling 2 separate sprocs in my application - one for the detailed data and another for the summary data using a "group by" on the table that was produced by the dynamic query (using "INTO TABLE" in the SELECT statement of the dynamic query). With this method, I received an access exception by asp.net. for the table created by the dynamic query so have dropped the "INTO TABLE", not to mention it increased the performance considerably NOT using the table.

Any suggestion on the most efficient/optimal method to use the data generated from the dynamic query sproc for the summary data? I am trying desparately to avoid running the dynamic query again just for the summary data.

I am a total newbie, so would appreciate any feedback. Also, would someone please tell me the datetime stamp function to print so that I can see how many milliseconds it takes to execute stored procedures?

TIA!

Sandy

Importing Excel Sheet Which Have Dynamic Column Name And Dynamic Number Of Columns

Aug 25, 2007

Hi Craig/Kamal,

I got your email address from your web cast. I really enjoyed the web cast and found it to be
very informative.

Our company is planning to use SSIS (VS 2005 / SQL Server 2005). I have a quick question
regarding the product. I have looked for the information on the web, but was not able to find
relevant information.

We are getting Source data from two of our client in the form of Excel Sheet. These Excel sheets
Are generated using reporting services. On examining the excel sheet, I found out that the name
Of the columns contain data itself, so the names are not static such as Jan 2007 Sales, Feb 2007 Sales etc etc.
And even the number of columns are not static. It depends upon the range of date selected by the user.

I wanted to know, if there is a way to import Excel sheet using Integration Services by defining the position
Of column, instead of column name and I am not sure if there is a way for me to import excel with dynamic
Number of columns.

Your help in this respect is highly appreciated!

Thanks,

Hi Anthony, I am glad the Web cast was helpful.

Kamal and I have both moved on to other teams in MSFT and I am a little rusty in that area, though in general dynamic numbers of columns in any format is always tricky. I am just assuming its not feasible for you to try and get the source for SSIS a little closer to home, e.g. rather than using Excel output from Reporting Services, use the same/some form of the query/data source that RS is using.

I suggest you post a question on the SSIS forum on MSDN and you should get some good answers.

SSRS 2005 - Email Report On Execution To Dynamic List With Dynamic Parameters = No Schedule

Nov 23, 2007

Hi,
I have a need to display on screen AND email a pdf report to email addresses specified at run time, executing the report with a parameter specified by the user. I have looked into data driven subscriptions, but it seems this is based on scheduling. Unfortunately for the majority of the project I will only have access to SQL 2005 Standard Edition (Production system is Enterprise), so I cannot investigate thoroughly.

So, is this possible using data driven subscriptions? Scenario is:

1. User enters parameter used for query, as well as email addresses.
2. Report is generated and displayed on screen.
3. Report is emailed to addresses specified by user.

Any tips on how to get this working?

Thanks

Merge Replication W/ Dynamic Row Filter - Not 'dynamic' After First Initial Sync?

May 2, 2007

If anyone could confirm...

SQL Server 2000 SP4 to multiple SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition on PDAs. My DB on SQL2k is published with a single dynamic row filter using host_name() on my 'parent' table and also join filters from parent to child tables. The row filter uses joins to other tables elsewhere that are not published to evaluate what data is allowed through the filter.

E.g. Published parent table that contains suppliers names, etc. while child table is suppliers' products. The filter queries host_name(s) linked to suppliers in unpublished table elsewhere.

First initial sync with snapshot is correct and as I expected - PDA receives only the data from parent (and thus child tables) that matches the row filter for the host_name provided.

However - in my scenario host_name <--> suppliers may later be updated E.g. more suppliers assigned to a PDA for use or vice versa. But when I merge the mobile DB, the new data is not downloaded? Tried re-running snapshot, etc., no change.

Question: I thought the filters would remain dynamic and be applied on each sync?

I run a 'harmless' update on parent table using TSQL e.g. "update table set 'X' = 'X'" and re-sync. Now the new parent records are downloaded - but the child records are not!

Question: I wonder why if parent records are supplied, why not child records?

If I delete existing DB and sync new, I get the updated snapshot and all is well - until more data added back at server...

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Is it possible (or not) to have dynamic filters run during second or subsequent merge?

Mixing Dynamic SQL With Non-Dynamic In Stored Proc

Mar 24, 2007

I have a Stored Procedure for processing a Bill of Material.

One column on the Assembly Table is a Function Name that contains some busniess rules.

OK, now I'm doing a Proof of Concept and I'm stumped.

Huuuuh!

I will ultimately have about 100 of these things. My plan was using Dynamic SQL to go execute the function.

Note: The function just returns a bit.

So; here's what I had in mind ...

if isnull(@FnNameYN,'') <> ''
exec spinb_CheckYN @FnNameYN, @InvLineID, @FnBit = @FnBit output

CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.spinb_CheckYN
@FnNameYN varchar(50),
@InvLineID int,
@FnBit bit output
AS

declare @SQL varchar(8000)

set @SQL = '
if dbo.' + @FnNameYN + ' (' + convert(varchar(31),@InvLineID) + ')) = 1
set @FnBit = 1
else
set @FnBit = 0'

exec (@SQL)
GO

Obviously; @FnBit is not defined in @SQL so that execution will not work.
Server: Msg 137, Level 15, State 1, Line 4
Must declare the variable '@FnBit'.
Server: Msg 137, Level 15, State 1, Line 5
Must declare the variable '@FnBit'.

So; is there a way to get a value out of a Dynamic SQL piece of code and get that value INTO my OUTPUT variable?

My many thanks to anyone who can solve this riddle for me.
Thank You!

Sigh: For now, it looks like I'll have a huge string of "IF" statements for each business rule function, as follows:
Hopefully a better solution comes to light.

------ Vertical Build1 - Std Vanes -----------
if @FnNameYN = 'fnb_YN_B1_14'
BEGIN
if dbo.fnb_YN_B1_14 (convert(varchar(31),@InvLineID) ) = 1
set @FnBit = 1
else
set @FnBit = 0
END

------ Vertical Build1 - Scissor Vanes -----------
if @FnNameYN = 'fnb_YN_B1_15'
BEGIN
if dbo.fnb_YN_B1_15 (convert(varchar(31),@InvLineID) ) = 1
set @FnBit = 1
else
set @FnBit = 0
END
.
.
.
etc.

i am not able to generate number in the way i said. I am relatively new to SQL. so any suggestions as how to go about solving the problem???. Are there any samples/codes available for this.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Generating SQL Script

I have generated an SQL script such that when it is run, it will automatically create tables if not existing or drop the existing tables. The problem I have is that, is there any way I can also make the script create not only the tables but also transfer the data from the old database to the new database?

I would really appreciate if any of you could point me to any existing programs, scripts etc that can do that. Thanks in advance

Generating Packages Using C#

May 12, 2006

Hi,

we would like to generate SSIS packages(connections, data flow tasks, etc..) programatically using C#. Is it possible to do so?

At present we are creating packages by dragging and dropping required componets from toolbox and configuring them manually. We have a requirement of creating around 300 packages every week. Manual creation of packages is really a nightmare.

I heard from one of friends that using c# we can create packages. is it true? if so, can we view/edit the packages generated using c# using VS 2005 IDE(if required) ?

Generating A Primary Key

The primary key in the SQL Server table is a combo number/letter incremental (ex. 0000A, 0001A...9999A, 0000B...). I tried creating Instead of insert and For insert trigger for a table but this doesn't seem to do the work.

What are my other options? How can I generate a primary key for every new row?

Any advice is appreciated.

Dynamic Source And Dynamic Destination

Apr 15, 2008

I have a requirment which i have partly accomplished , but could not get through completely

i have a file which comes in a standard format ending with date and seq number ,

suppose , the file name is abc_yyyymmdd_01 , for first copy , if it is copied more then once the sequence number changes to 02 and 03 and keep going on .

then i need to transform those in to new file comma delimited destination file with a name abc_yyyymmdd,txt and others counting file counting record abc_count_yyyymmdd.txt. and move it to a designated folder. and the source file is then moved to archived folder

what i have taken apprach is

script task select source file --------------------> data flow task------------------------------------------> script task to destination file

dataflow task -------------------------> does count and copy in delimited format

what is happening here is i can accomlish a regular source file convert it to delimited destination file --------> and move it to destination folder with script task .

but cannot work the dynamic pick of a source file.

please advise with your comments or solution you have

Generating CREATE Scripts

May 20, 2008

Hello all,
I have a few questions relating to scripts and I'm looking for some help, or at least a point in the right direction.
1) I'm generating CREATE scripts to move a number of tables/procedures/functions from my testing database to my production database.  The issue I have is the script doesn't seem to be generated in a particular order, so I'm getting errors when a table/procedure/function is created that references something that hasn't been created yet.  Is there a setting available to create the script in a specific order to prevent these errors?
2) This is somewhat related to the first question.  I need to drop all the tables/procedures/functions before I re-create them.  Can I set all the DROPs at the beginning of the script, and then run all the CREATEs?
3) Eventually the database will be ready for production and in use.  And eventually I'll be asked to make changes, without erasing existing data.  Can I accomplish this using the generate scripts feature?  What topics should I be investigating when looking into conducting these types of updates?  "Updating database" is too general and I'm not sure the technical term.  I've done very simple DB-related tasks so I'm trying to figure out what I'm looking for so I can educate myself.  Basically, I don't know what I don't know.
Any help is appreciated.  Thanks.

Generating Membership Number

Jan 20, 2005

Hi all,
I have a question about generating membership numbers on the fly when someone registers to my website.

Rather than using the auto increment field as a membership number, I would rather keep it as just as the ID for the record and I would like to have a seperate membership number that looks something similar to this...

SR357324J

This will then stay with them for the lifetime of their membership and be on their printed loyalty card.

My questions are...
1) Is there a 'good practice' for membership number format and generation?

2) If this was used as a unique field, is there a degradation in performance when looking up records due to it being alphanumeric.

I may be well off base here, however these are my thoughts so far and your opinion/help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your contribution.
