Geographically Diverse Data Deployment Doubletake, SRDF, Log Shipping
Jul 20, 2005
I am looking at various software packages that can help deploy SQL
data to a remote DR facility. Essentially I am looking for something
that would allow us to bring up a cold or warm standby SQL server to
be used in the event of a site disaster. In the past I have used EMC
technologies and found it to be a good option but kind of on the
expensive side. As of late we have started to look at a couple of
software/kernel level application that offer similar functionality
Has anyone had any experience using Double Take or Evergreen with SQL
server and deploying data to a remote data facility? Are there any
other products that offer similar functionality that you can
recommend?
Thanks

I have just started in a brand new role where I need to collect a large amount of diverse data. Part of this data is whether the steps in a guideline has been followed ( a simple check box or yes/no) (but there are maybe 100 guidelines)
My IT department have suggested we use SQL to create the database, but this will obviously take time. In the meantime my boss is keen that I get on with the data collection before the database is ready. I do not want to repeat steps when I create the SQL database so is there any format you would recommend I collect my data in now that can be easily applied to the SQL database - ie if I used Excel, would that be best, and should I then try to keep potential SQL table data separate?

Has anyone done anything with srdf/s and sql 2005 in a clustered environment?
Here's our scenario: we have a production and a DR site. Both are running Windows 2003 clusters with SQL 2005 SP2 hooked up to an EMC DMX3 SAN. We will be replicating the production luns to the DR site with the expectation that the mirrored luns will be brought into the cluster at the DR site and the SQL instance brought online.
We have split our binaries from our data, with the binaries on local storage and the data on the SAN. The instance names are completely different at both sites.
My question is: how do I go about implementing something that can bring the SQL instance online at the DR site?
This must have been done somewhere else in the world.
let me know if I'm in the wrong forum.
any help would be appreciated.

We have a client with our data base, but this database is undergoing constant changes since the development has not been finished, for that reason whenever we made an update we must synchronize the data base. I wondering if exists a tool in which setup can be created and updates the data base in SQL.

Hi all,It was my understanding (Please correct me if I'm wrong on this!) thatBLOB data actually reside on their own separate pages and a BLOB fieldonly holds a pointer to the location of the actual data, therefore theBLOB data per se would not get written to the log, only the pointerwould be written. If log shipping works by applying the transaction log to the standbydatabase, then what happens to the BLOB data?Related question, how does transactional replication work? Is it alsobased on the transaction log?TIA,Ellen

I notice that when deploying a package that uses data sources behind its connection managers, the deployed package has the connection string built within the package that gets deployed.

Hi,
I have written a Data Processing extension for my application and can deploy it on my development machine no problems. My question is: what is the "correct" way of deploying an extension to an end user's machine? Do I have to write a special program to find and modify the Reporting Server config files and copy the extension over. Surely many developers have the same need so there must be a generic solution to this problem, however, I haven't managed to find one.
I first came across this issue in SQL2000 and I thought/hoped it would be rectified with SQL2005 but it appears not to be (unless I'm missing something).
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Tim

Hi
I could not able to find Forums in regards to 'Log Shipping' thats why posting this question in here. Appriciate if someone can provide me answers depends on their experience.
Can we switch database recovery model when log shipping is turned on ?
We want to switch from Full Recovery to Bulk Logged Recovery to make sure Bulk Insert operations during the after hours load process will have some performance gain.
Is there any possibility of loosing data ?
Thanks

In 2007 we plan on moving many of our SQL Servers (2000 & 2005) to a SAN. We will also be investigating the best way to replicate data from our production SAN to a Disaster Recovery SAN. I would like to know if people rely on built-in SQL Server replication / log shipping or third party products like DoubleTake or MirrorView. What's the advantage, if any, to using a third-party product?
Thanks, Dave

I had posted this in the following pre-existing thread :
http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=89737&SiteID=1
Also wanted to start a thread on this to see if I can get some suggestions. Any suggestions on how to do this are appreciated.

Books-Online quote:
>> In Integration Services, data sources are design-time objects that you use when you build packages in SSIS Designer.
This is indeed the case but why? I would like to see it changed or provide some way of including the data source in some kind of a "solution/project configuration", the same way one can create a "package configuration" right now.
If one can build a project, and create a deployment utility to deploy the entire project (all packages), it is incoceivable why one shouldn't be able to set configurations at a "project" level.
Right now I am having to create package configurations to configure my connection setting for dev/test/prod etc environments. But the trouble is, if I have 10 packages each involving 3 connections in my project, I have only 3 data sources in my project, but come deployment time, I'm having to create 10 package configurations, and set my ConnectionString (which is different for dev/test/prod etc) 30 times during deployment.
If there is a better way to do it, I would like to know. Otherwise, this is what I would like to see in the next SP.

thanks,
RV

I'm a beginner with SQL 2012 SSDT & SSMS. I get this error message when I try to deploy my project:
"Error 6
Error (Data mining): KEY SEQUENCE columns are not supported at the case level. The 'Customer Key' column of the 'TK448 Ch09 Cube Clustering' mining structure contains content that is not valid.

"
I am finding it hard to locate the content that is not valid. I've been trying to find a answer for this problem but can't seem to find anything. How can I locate the content that is not valid and change or delete it so that I can deploy this solution?

We have an SSAS project that we want to auto deploy. I am not sure how to handle the external data sources in the project. This one in particular has a single external data source defined to Microsoft SQL Server.
I would like to be able to change the data source based on the environment. In SSIS projects I can do this by setting up environments in the SSISDB and linking them to project parameters in the SSIS project but SSAS projects don't seem to have a similar mechanism.
How to handle this? I would like to be able to have the build/deployment agent pass in server / database information to the data source based on environment (dev, QA, production).
The only way to automate this that I've discovered is to have an intermediary process that executes after the build that updates the generated .asdatabase and .configsettings files in the bin folder replacing the connection string information.

Hi,
I 'm sure I am missing something obvious, hopefully someone could point it out. After a failover log shipping, I want to fail back to my inital Primary server database; however, my database is marked as loading. How can I mark it as normal?
I did the failover as follow:
I did a failover log shipping from the 2 server Sv1 (Primary) and Sv2 (Secondary) by doing the following
1) Stop the primary database by using sp_change_primary_role (Sv1)
2) Change the 2nd server to primary server by running sp_change_secondary_role (Sv2)
3) Change the monitor role by running sp-change_monitor_role (Sv2)
4) Resolve the log ins - (Sv2)
5) Now I want to fail back - I copy the TRN files to Sv1 - use SQL Ent to restore the database at point in time. The task is done; however, the database is still mark as loading. I could not use sp_dboption.
I appreciate any suggestion.
Thanks in advance

We are setting up a new Reporting Services 2005 enterprise reporting tier that will support multiple developers, applications, and end users. We will have mirrored environments including development, test, and production each with their own database cluster, and reporting server.
We have multiple report developers who share a single Visual Studio solution which is saved in SourceSafe and is setup to have separate report projects for each business unit in the orgainzation. Each report project is mapped to a specific deployment folder matching the business unit. Using the Visual Studio Configuration Manager, we can simply flip to the envirnoment we want to deploy to and the reports are published to the correct environment and folder structure.
My problem lies with the common data sources. We are using a single master Common Data Sources folder to hold all of the data sources. The trick is that each and every reporting folder seems to have to have it's own copy of the data source in visual studio. There does not seem to be an easy way to change the data sources for the reports when you publish to various environment, i.e. development, test, production etc.
Ideally, we would have a single project for the common data sources that all reporting projects and associated folders would map to, and we would have a way to associate the appropriate data source for each environment when we deploy.
I'm looling for best practices on how to setup data sources for development and deployment in an enterprise environment that uses Visual Studio to develop and publish reports. We have 3 environments, and 6 data sources per environment and about 20 reporting folder / project in Visual Studio. That's 360 changes that have to be manged when deploying reports. Is there a best practices way to do this?
There has got to be a better way? Can anyone give me some insite into how to set this up?
Thanks!

I'm trying to test my ASP.NET application. Everything is working to the point of getting to my login page to open. When I try to login I receive and error that the database does not exist or access is denied. I used the developer version of SQL Server to create the database and installed the MSDE on my test PC. Then I copied the mdf and ldf files to the new PC. Is there something else I should be doing? Or any suggestions?

I tried to deploy a package to production and failed miserably. The error is pretty simple "Format of the initialization string does not conform to specification". Trouble is, I opened my source on the production machine, generated a new connection string from a new connection manager and guess what, the string comes out EXACTLY the same as the one my package is set to point to at runtime. so, where do I start?
some general stuff.
There are ADO and OLEDB connection in the package.
Each gets its connection string from a variable.
the variable is set in a script task which pulls the data out of an encryped sql server column.
when the connection string is displayed via a simple message box, it is exactly what I want i to be, e.g.
Data Source=a.b.c.d;User ID=A_USER;password=password;Initial Catalog=a_database;Provider=SQLNCLI.1;Auto Translate=False;
I am guessing that it must be a setting or option on the SQL Servers themselfs, something in its configuration as otherwise the strings are identical so there must be something in the way that one SQl server is not set up to allow connections from another?

I'm attempting to deploy CLR Stored Procedures from Visual Studio 2005.
I have a VS Database project with stored procedures for all of the tables in our database. (I would really like to keep everything together in 1 DLL), everything seems fine except...
I keep receiving the following error when attempting to deploy to SQL Server:
Error 1 Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of
the operation or the server is not responding.
After some experimentation I have determined that its because the DLL is too
large: 1.8 mb. (I also have a larger one).
I have looked through various documentation sources but have found none
concerning this problem other than specifing something aboug a 100ms
execution timeout (not sure if this is the same).
Deployment works if I trim down the size of the DLL (i.e., remove procedures from the solution)
Is there anyway to deploy large DLLs to SQL Server without having to break
them up? If so, where is the setting to allow a longer timeout period for
deployment?

I need to create a RO copy of a production DB owned by an outside company. We are connectd via a WAN link, but cannot use replication. They are proposing using an initial load via tape, and sending us a text file nightly with the days changes to the DB. We will then need to load that data using BCP, DTS or some other method. Does any one have any ideas on using log shipping instead of the text file. It would only be practical to get a fresh load of the entire DB once a quarter or once a month at most. It is a 40+ GB database and we are expecting 100 to 200 MB of logs per night. For business reasons, we are limited to some type of file transfer mechanism for the data transfer, and cannot really change their backup schedule which is nightly fullbackups and tlogs every 30 minutes.

Hi all,
I am using SQL 2k EP Editions with SP2 on Win 2k Advance servers. Since more than week or so I am trying to establish log shipping between two servers. But its not working.
I am using database maintainence plan wizard to set up log shipping. Every thing works fine as far as wizard is concern, it creats plan for log shipping. But my log shipping is not working. The plan to back up log on source database is working fine. I can see the job history and the log files in the backup folder. But I have found that the job on the standby server to copy log file on network folder is failing and so the job to restore log on stand by server. I get the following message
"sqlmaint.exe failed with error state....."
Little reaserch on the standby server found that sql server is using maintainence plan to copy and restore log files, but i do not see any database maintainence plans on standby server as well as I have checked that there is no plan id in sysjobs table on either server.
I have sa rights. The account used by sql service and sql agent have admin rights and they do have rights to access the network folder for both the servers. So there is no rights problem.
I have followed all steps published in white paper for setting up log shipping on microsoft web site.
I have searched microsoft KB but it is of no use for sqlmaint.exe.
Any help is highly appreciated.
thanks in advance.
Minesh.

This might end up being fairly lengthy...I'm in the midst of implementing log shipping as a "warm stand-by" solution at my company. All the components appear to be in place: I'm using cmd shell to copy the backup device file to a remote server and then execute a RESTORE stored procedure on the remote server.
The copy and restore work just fine. The problem I'm having is with the transaction log dumps and restores.
We normally dump transaction logs (and then truncate) every hour. With the log shipping being implemented, we're going to want to do separate log dumps every ten or fifteen minutes, copy that dump over to the remote server, and then apply that log to the database.
Here's the question: for the log ship portion, I don't truncate the log. But after the "normal" log dump occurs, things get tossed out of whack. When you try to apply a log, I get the message "database has not been rolled forward enough....".
Has anyone encountered this type of issue and if so, how did you work around it? I'm assuming it's a simple of issue of certain options you set on your dumps and scheduling....
I'd appreciate any help....
Thanks!!!
