Firstly, can someone confirm that this can be done. Because I am starting to wonder.
I have downloaded the SQL Server 2005 Express install, and attempted to install. Everything goes well. Computer scan indicates that everything is in place, but then when it goes to install the components it states that the following components failed:
(Successful items were SQL Setup Support Files, SQL VSS Writer, OWC11, SQL Server Backward-Compatibility Files, SQL Server Management Studio Express).
For those Items that failed, I just get a message stating "Setup failed. Refer to Setup Log'. The setup log tells me little to nothing about why these components failed.
I am also getting the following message part way through install "An installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Server Native Client cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'sqlncli.mis'". Does anyone know what this means? I downloaded the install from microsoft.com just a few days ago, so if this isn't "valid", then where do I get a valid one.
I'm totally stuck. Have spent almost a day trawling documentation etc. to find why these have not installed, but cannot find any indication of why they wont install.. everything that needs to be in place is. Hoping someone has had similar issues and can help.
After installing SQL Server 2005 Express Edition on Windows Vista RC1, I wanted to install also the Managent Studio but I always receive the following error message:

There are numerous posts regarding this error when installing SQL Server 2005 on Windows Vista RTM thus I am starting a new thread in order to get resolution one way or another:SQL Server Setup failed to execute a command for server configuration. The error was [SQL Native Client]Windows user or group "USERNAMESQLServer2005MSFTEUser$USERNAME$MSSQLSERVER" not found. Check the name again... The error occurs when installing SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition, SQL Server Express SP1, SQL Server Express SP2 CTR (with or without the SP2 Toolkit package installed beforehand). The error occurs with or without UAC.
The installation then fails. Please advise if you have any insights. SQL Server Express SP2 CTR was announced as a workable version for Vista... note that this is not the case.
I am having this problem since I installed the new windows Vista.
I am trying to install the SQL Server 2005 developer edition on Windows Vista, but After installation finish successfuly I open the start menu to surprise that I could not find the Shortcuts to open the SQL Server and create new database and tables etc... I opened the full path of the exe files "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90ToolsBinnVSShellCommon7IDE" but there are not any file there, even that I searched for the exe files names but they are not existed. It looks that after instalation complete that the SQL Server is not installed on Windows Vista.
So, my question is: After installing the SQL Server 2005 SP2 for windows Vista, will the problem be solved? Or there is something else to do ON WINDOWS VISTA.

I am getting error when trying to install SQL 2005 express edition on Windows Vista (32-bit). It says that I don't have the framework (or it's corrupt), but I know that i don't need to install it again because it cames already with Vista.
I tried to install the framework, but it says that i've already the framework installed.
Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.
As the titel suggests I am having quite a strange problem
I have installed an Enotebook on our domain server at work and it uses MSQL express 2005. When I ask it to automatically connect using window authentication to connect it works on windows XP machines with DomainUSERNAME. However when I try the same thing on Windows vista it tells me the logon failed with "DomainUSERNAM". I change it to SQL Authetifcation and type the same username fully (I have added the user via active directory as a SQL user) then it works
Basically it looks like the windows username is sent from Vista missing the last letter.
I have Googled this a lot and have not really found an answer. Am I mearly being very stupid or is this a known issue. Can anyone give me a suggestion as to why this might happen?.

Whenever I try to install SQL Server 2005 Express Edition on my Vista Ultimate x64 platform I get error 29506. All I could find on the web was that this is probably due to an access control problem. I have tried installing it as the local administrator, as a member of domain admins, and as the domain administrator. All get the same error. My domain is a Small Business Server domain. This may be part of the problem, but I can't imagine how.
When trying to force access to the domain administrator, I also seem to get an access problem.

I'm facing a problem while installing the SQL Server 2005 Express on Windows 2000 Pro with SP4.
After finishing the downloading from Microsoft I start the installation and things seems to go ok but during Extracting Files step a message appears "SQL Server Setup unexpectedly failed. For more information, review the setup summary log file in %Program Files%Microsoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOGSummary.txt" and it terminates the installation.
I located the log file and open it but can't understand the problem..I copy the text and paste it here for anyone who can understand it.Please, it is very importand for me to work with SQL Server for my project. Any advice or information or anything else???

Ive read on some pages that it is in fact possible to install and run SQL Server 2000 on Vista. In my university, SQL Server 2000 is still used to teach us about databases and how to administrate them. The computers run Windows 2000 Professional. I need to be able to use 2000 so I can not only have compatibility but also know the steps and all possible conditions and solutions to problems. Would installing and running SQL Server 2000 on Vista be possible or am I better off using 2005? Is there much difference between these 2 versions?
I just upgraded from Windows XP Pro to Windows Vista Bussiness and tried to reinstall SQL Server 2005 Developers Edition. After the installation i downloaded (using microsoft windows update) and installed all the service packs for sql and vista available.
My problem is when i open sql server management studio and try to connect to my default instance using windows authentication and database engine, an 18456 error occurs.
I enabled all the protocols and all the ports I disabled windows firewall and antivirus (eset nod32) I installed all service packs available I have also installed Visual Studio 2005 without installing sqlexpress
But nothing happens!
Please i am very desperate, any information will be gratefully accepted.

i've a new laptop with windows vista and i've installed vwd express edition, framwork, asp.net and sql expresse edition, but once i try to use the sql connection from the vwd, i receive an error msg "Échec de la création d'une instance d'utilisateur SQL Server en raison d'une défaillance du démarrage de processus pour l'instance d'utilisateur. I'm getting this error when installing SQL Express 2005 on a non-English version of Vista.
"SQL Server Setup could not validate the service accounts. Either the service accounts have not been provided for all of the services being installed, or the specified username or password is incorrect. For each service, specify a valid username, passowrd, and domain, or specify a built-in system account."
Using Wise I get this error only when installing on a non-English version of Windows Vista, I can get the install to complete if I remove nt/authority. I've tried changing the non-English versions of Vista localization to English but I still get the same error.
Hi y'all, I just know that SQL Server Express Edition SP2 is being released by Microsoft recently, and from previous informations I gathered; it seemed that SQL Server 2005 Express Edition is not compatible with Windows Vista (any editions). With the release of SP2, does this mean SQL Server 2005 Express Edition is now compatible with Windows Vista? If so, do I have to install .NET Framework v2.0 first in my Windows Vista Business edition? BecauseI know that Vista Business edition already has .NET Framework v3.0 in it. Thanks for your help! Is there some special settings, permissions, or special choices I have to make when install SQL Express SP1 Advanced on Vista Beta 2 to allow me to restore DBs?
I have a user, which is the user during Vista Beta 2 install that it created as 'Administrator' account.
With this user, I have righ-clicked and Run As Administrator the SQL Express SP1 Advanced install..
All my attempts as an Administrator or with this user to restore a DB, results in a DB that the user can't connect to and run a simple select on. I either flat out can't restore the DB, or if I can somehow through lots of messing around get the DB restored, I then get a SQL permissions on object error from SQL Server Express on a simple select.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong, does anyone have any experience with this and any pointers on where I could be getting hung-up?

Hi, I am running SQL Server 2005 x64 DE on Vista x64. I installed MS VS 2005 Pro. Edition. During the setup of VS, I did a custom install, un-checking the SQL Express addition box. After installation, I received errors that indicated the SQL Express did not install. Even though I do not have SQL Express installed on my machine, MS Update says that I need SQL Express SP2. My SQL DE is up to date with SP2 and MS Update indicates as "optional" that I need SQL SP2.
Is SQL Express a necessity for VS Pro? If not, why is MS Update indicating that I need SQL Express SP2? In addition, why is MS Update telling me I need SQL SP2 when it is already installed?
Note: I installed SQL SP2 manually, not through MS Update. This makes me believe that MS Update is not detecting it.
I installed sql server 2005 sp2 including business intelligence development suite , however I got a message some client components not compablitable .This morning I searched my programs and found that I have new visual studio 2005 on my computer (before I just had vs 2008) as well as business intelligence developer (which does not work) It seems I I would like to get rid of vs 2005 also fix business intelligence studio . I'm about to purchase a new development laptop and want to ensure I won't have any issues installing SQL Server 2005 on Windows Vista.
I can see from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506.aspx that it is possible but states that SQL Server 2005 SP2 must be installed.
My install CD is for SQL Server Developer Edition without SP1 or SP2. Will I be able to install off this and then install SP2 afterwards or will I encounter problems because I need SP2 present on the install media?

I need to install SQL Server 2005 (for reporting services mainly) on Vista, but i have issues.
I have installed IIS and its checked in the pre-installation checklist, and the only thing with an exclamation point is the OS which is to be expected.
The issue im having is that when i get to the screen to select the features/components i want to install, they are all disabled apart from "Workstation components, Books online etc..."
Where am i going wrong with this.. I know i need the services pack to install reporting services, but i cant install anything at this point.

My machine has 2 GB RAM with 160 HDD. IIS is on. Still I am getting the following warring messages. - Minimum Hardware Requirement - IIS Feature Requirement
I am not able to proceed with the installation due to this.
