Getting Results Of 2 Items In Querystring Using Two Different Sqldatasources
Mar 8, 2008
Hi, I'm using the following to send two items in the querystring over to the next page, where I can display tables based on them. Both querystrings appear fine in the URL. The first querystring works fine to single out the order specified by the orderid from the querystring, but I can't seem to get my other sqldatasource to show the userid (+contents of aspnet_users table) using the userid I passed in the querystring.
<asp:HyperLinkField DataNavigateUrlFields="OrderID,UserId" DataNavigateUrlFormatString="Copy of Orders.aspx?OrderID={0}&UserId={1}" DataTextField="OrderID, UserId" />
This is what I'm using to try and pick up the userid
<asp:GridView ID="GridView3" runat="server" AutoGenerateColumns="False" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource3" DataKeyNames="UserId">
<Columns>
<asp:BoundField DataField="UserId" HeaderText="UserId" SortExpression="UserId" />
<asp:BoundField DataField="UserName" HeaderText="UserName" SortExpression="UserName" />
</Columns>
</asp:GridView>
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource3" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:ConnectionString2 %>"
SelectCommand="SELECT [UserId], [UserName] FROM [aspnet_Users] WHERE UserId = @UserId">
<SelectParameters>
<asp:QueryStringParameter DefaultValue="UserId" Name="UserId" QueryStringField="UserId"
Type="object" />
</SelectParameters>
</asp:SqlDataSource>

I am looking for a way to show how I can have a result set that shows a record with one item and the number of records where it was purchased or sold. Below is my sample data.
Use tempdb
go
create table #ItemLedgerEntry
(
ENTRYNO INT NOT NULL
, ITEMNO VARCHAR (50) NOT NULL
, POSTINGDATE DATETIME NOT NULL
, ENTRYTYPE INT NOT NULL
[code]....
I know something like this will give me results but I'd like to run one query.
select itemno, count(*) from #ItemLedgerEntry where entrytype = 0
group by itemno
order by count(*) desc

I have a query that returns the data about test cases. Each test case can have multiple bugs associated to it. I would like a query that only returns the test cases that have all their associated bugs status = closed.For instance here is a sample of my data
TestCaseID TestCaseDescription BugID BugStatus
1 TestCase1 1 Closed
2 TestCase1 2 Open
3 TestCase2 11 Closed
4 TestCase2 12 Closed
5 TestCase2 13 Closed
How can I limit this to only return TestCase2 data since all of that test case's bugs have a status of closed.

I was wondering, if you have multiple SqlDataSources on a single aspx page, does the framework need to open and close a SEPERATE connection for each SqlDataSource. This would make it much less efficient than coding with the ADO.NET objects and just opn and close the connection once irrespective how many quries that page needs.
Your comments would be appreciated.

Hello all, I'm currently developing an asp.net site that reads from and writes data to a sql server database. the connections to the database are made with SqlDataSources. I am not manually opening and closing connections in my code, I figured that I could abstract those processes out by sticking with SqlDataSources. I recently ran into the following error while trying to write data to my sql server database on one of my pages:
Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to obtaining a connection from the pool. This may have occurred because all pooled connections were in use and max pool size was reached.
I read up about connection pooling, and tried restarting restarting the sql server database I'm working on, restarting IIS on my web server, and I've even tried to manually clear the connection pool with SqlConnection.clearAllPools() and SqlConnection.clearPool(my connection string), but I still get the above error.
What else could I try to do short of restarting the server that sql server is on?

I was watching the "To Do List" AJAX video created by Joe Stagner and while watching the video I noticed (in designer) Joe use a Dataset to populate a Gridview and this got me thinking. I have a few gridviews in my app at work that just use SqlDataSources, and they seem to work fine, but is it better to use Datasets ?

Hi: I'm try to create a stored procedure where I sum the amounts in an invoice and then store that summed amount in the Invoice record. I am struggling to come up with a set-based solution for this problem (i.e. that doesn't involve loops/cursors) ..A table contains items (identified by an ItemCode) and the set they belong to (identified by a SetId). Here is some sample data:
SetIdItemCode
1A
1B
24
28
26
310
312
410
[code]....
You can see that there are some sets that have the same members:
- 1 and 10
- 2 and 11
- 7, 8 & 9
What I want to do is identify the sets that have the same members, by giving them the same ID in another column called UniqueSetId.

I'm having an issue creating a report that can group & sum similar items together (I know in some ways, the requirement doesn't make sense, but it's what the client wants).
I have a table of items (i.e. products). In some cases, items can be components of another item (called "Kits"). In this scenario, we consider the kit itself, the "parent item" and the components within the kit are called "child items". In our Items table, we have a field called "Parent_Item_Id". Records for Child Items contain the Item Id of the parent. So a sample of my database would be the following:
ItemId | Parent_Item_Id | Name | QuantityAvailable
----------------------------------------
1 | NULL | Kit A | 10
2 | 1 | Item 1 | 2
3 | 1 | Item 2 | 3
4 | NULL | Kit B | 4
5 | 4 | Item 3 | 21
6 | NULL | Item 4 | 100
Item's 2 & 3 are child items of "Kit A", Item 5 is a child item of "Kit B" and Item 6 is just a stand alone item.
So, in my report, the client wants to see the SUM of both the kit & its components in a single line, grouped by the parent item. So an example of the report would be the following:
Name | Available Qty
--------------------------
Kit A | 15
Kit B | 25
Item 4 | 100
How I can setup my report to group properly?

If I script the SQL statement with a constant, deleting the record from the database works.
If I script the SQL statement to delete based on the WHERE clause being a variable name, it will not delete the record.
The value being compared in the WHERE clause comes directly from the Sequel database.
I have a dropdown box that is filled from the database. The dropdown1.selecteditem.text is placed in a variable. The script is to delete a record from the database where the table.name in the database equals the item name selected from the dropdown box.
This querystring does not delete the record from the database:
dim queryString As String = "DELETE FROM [Table1] WHERE ([Table1].[name] = 'variableCompareText')"
This querystring does delete the recrod from the database:
dim queryString As String = "DELETE FROM [Table1] WHERE ([Table1].[name] = 'John')"
Why can't I delete a record with a variable in the querystring? Otherwise, you would have to always know in advance which record to specify rather than being deleted dynamically.

I have a report that has 2 parameters. I use this report to do comparisons of performance data between two builds of our product. I'm not hosting this report in a seperate page, just using the standard sql reporting services web interface.
I'd like to be able to send out a link to this page that will load up the page with values for the parameters specified. I know in the report definition itself I can change the default parameter values, but I'd rather not change and redeploy the report every time I need to send it out for others to view.
My first thought was that it should be easy enough to specify the parameters as part of the url querystring and read the values in somehow using an expression for the parameters default value. Is this possible? I've done a bunch of searching but can't seem to find any good examples of this.

hi. i'm building a news section for some friends of mine. i list all the news items on the main page in a gridview. i've made a custom edit linkbutton that sends the user to an edit page, passing the news id as a quarystring variable. on the edit page i first check if the querystring variable contains an id at all. if not, i redirect the user to the main page. if an id is passed with the querystring, i fetch the matching news item from the database and place it in a formview control for editing.so far, so good. but what if someone types a random id in the querystring? then the formview won't show up and i'd look like a fool. :) therefore, i need some kind of check to see if the id exists in the database. if not redirect the user back to the main page... so i started thinking: i could check the databsae in a page_load procedure. if all is well, then display the news item. since the formview is automatically filled with the correct data, does that mean that i call the database two times? i mean, one for checking if the news item exists, and one for filling the formview. logically, this would be a waste of resources.help is appreciated.

[.NET 2.0, Visual Basic, RadChart/RadPanel/RadTimer controls (www.telerik.com), SQLDataSource controls, SQLServer 2002]
I have only been working with .NET for about a month now so my knowledge and understanding are pretty low in some areas, including this one.
What I have is a number of webpages that have several RadChart controls on them (8 to 12 charts per page). Each of these charts is bound to a seperate SQLDataSource with a variation of the following query:
1 SELECT [QC Shot Logs].penetration, charges.penmra, charges.penmts, [QC Shot Logs].time2 FROM [QC Shot Logs] INNER JOIN (select top 1 run.runid, run.linerpress#, run.partid3 from run where run.linerpress# = '1' order by run.[date] desc) as drun ON [QC Shot Logs].RunID = dRun.RunID4 INNER JOIN Charges ON dRun.PartID = Charges.PartID5 where [qc shot logs].shottype < 3 order by [qc shot logs].timeEach chart represents the results of a quality control check on explosives that my company uses and puts the data in a visual format so that it is easy to see if the blasts passed or failed inspection. The different variations in the SQL code above are simply a change in line #3: where run.linerpress# = '1', where run.linerpress# = '2', and so on up to '12'.
Data is added and modified in the database quite a bit throughout the day at random times, so I need the charts to refresh their data pretty frequently (done with a RadTimer control). The problem that is caused then is that I have 12 RadCharts individually bound to 12 SQLDataSources that all get refreshed every 30 seconds or so, which takes quite a bit of time. The main Quality Control computer monitors four webpages at a time, one of them with 12 Charts/Sources, and three with 8 Charts/Sources each. Having 36 charts up at a time with 36 hits on the database going as well causes a great deal of lag on the system. In addition to that though, there are also two other pages (each with 12 charts/sources) that can be viewed by any number of people at any time, which (obviously) causes more lag on the system.
So, on to my actual questions:
1) Can I use a single SQLDataSource control to gather all of the data I need for the 8-12 RadCharts on a single page? I'm not too well versed in SQL either, so I don't know if I can modify the SQL so that it picks up all of the information I need, or if I can gather the data for the first chart, change a variable to pull the data for the second, change the variable again, etc.
2) Is there a way to refresh the RadCharts so that the data they display is relatively real time without having to refresh the SQLDataSources as well?
And then, of course, any suggestions at all that you can give me that will help to improve overall performace or anything of the like is definitely appreciated.

I pass in 3 querystring parameters to my web form. The Object Data Sources pick up these parameters
and select the appropriate records.
I want to display one of the querystring parameters in my Page Header, specifically the one for Fiscal Year.
I could return the Fiscal Year in a column from the data source, but the Fiscal Year would not populate if
no records were returned...Therefore, I must get the querystring parameter that was originally passed in...
How do I populate the report control textbox with the value of querystring parameter?
Thanks!

I have a vb.net page that I need to display a list of employees who work in a specific office, based on a MatterID passed in a query string. But, I don't know how to get a value returned from one sql statement into a second. Here's what I'm trying to do...
From the QueryString, we know that the MatterID = 4 ( xxx.aspx?MatterID=4)
Knowing that the Matterid=4, I query the database to get the OfficeId for that MID (Select OfficeID from tMatter where Mid=4) ~This returns an OfficeID of 6
So, then I need to do another query to get the employees where OfficeID = 6 (Select EmployeeID from tEmployees where OfficeID = 6)
How do I do these in one query, or how do I use the Calculated Value for the OfficeID in the 2nd statement?

I have four tables: Customer (CustomerId INT, CountyId INT), County (CountyId INT), Search(SearchId INT), and SearchCriteria (SearchCriteriaId INT, SearchId INT, CountyId INT, [others not related to this]).
I want to search Customer based off of the Search record, which could have multiple SearchCriteria records. However, if there aren't any SearchCriteria records with CountyId populated for a given Search, I want it to assume to get all Customer records, regardless of CountyId.
Right now, I'm doing it this way.
DECLARE @SearchId INT = 100
SELECT * FROM Customer WHERE
CountyId IN
(
SELECT CASE WHEN EXISTS(SELECT CountyId FROM SearchCriteria WHERE SearchId = @SearchId)
THEN SearchCriteria.CountyId
[Code] .....
This works; it just seems cludgy. Is there a more elegant way to do this?

When a record is clicked, the primary key of that record is transfered in the query string to another page and fed into an sql statement. In this case its selecting a project on the first page, and displaying all the scripts for that project on another page. I also have an additional dropdownlist on the second page that i use to filter the scripts by an attribute called 'testdomain'. At present this works to an extent. When i click a project, i am navigated to the scripts page which is empty except for the dropdownlist. i then select a 'testdomain' from the dropdownlist and the page populates with scripts (formview) for the particular test domain. what i would like is for all the scripts to be displayed using the formview in the first instance when the user arrives at the second page. from there, they can then filter the scripts using the dropdownlist.
My current SQL statement is as follows.
SelectCommand="SELECT * FROM [TestScript] WHERE (([ProjectID] = @ProjectID) AND ([TestDomain] = @TestDomain))"
So what is happening is when testdomain = a null value, it does not select any scripts. Is there a way i can achieve the behaivour of the page as i outlined above? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
James.

Hi all, I have the following SQLDataSource statement which connects to my Gridview:<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSourceStandings" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:ConnectionString %>" SelectCommand="SELECT P.firstName, P.lastName, T.teamName, IsNull(P.gamesPlayed, 0) as gamesPlayed, IsNull(P.plateAppearances,0) as plateAppearances, IsNull( (P.plateAppearances - (P.sacrifices + P.walks)) ,0) as atbats, IsNull(P.hits,0) as hits, P.hits/(CONVERT(Decimal(5,2), IsNull(NullIF(P.atbats, 0), 1))) AS [average], (P.hits + P.walks)/(CONVERT(Decimal(5,2), IsNull(NullIF( (P.atbats + P.sacrifices + P.walks) , 0), 1))) AS [OBP], (P.hits - (P.doubles + P.triples + P.homeRuns) + (2 * P.doubles) + (3 * P.triples) + (4 * P.homeRuns)) / (CONVERT(Decimal(5,2), IsNull(NullIF(P.atbats, 0), 1))) AS [SLG], P.singles, P.doubles, P.triples, P.homeRuns, P.walks, P.sacrifices, P.runs, P.rbis FROM Players P INNER JOIN Teams T ON P.team = T.teamID ORDER BY P.firstName, P.lastName"></asp:SqlDataSource>There are 8 teams in the database, and somehow the average and obp results are as expected for all teams except where T.teamID = 1. This doesn't make sense to me at all! For example, I get the following results with this same query: First NameLast NameTeamGPPAABHAVGOBPSLG1B2B3BHRBBSACRRBI

ErikGalvezMelville82625180.7200000.7307691.24000011322101015 As you can see, all teams except for Safe Haven's have the correct AVG and OBP. Since AVG is simply H/AB, it doesn't make sense for Gabriel Helbig's results to be 1.00000. Can anyone shed ANY light on this please?Thank you in advance,Markuu ***As a side note, could anyone also let me know how I could format the output so that AVG and OBP are only 3 decimal places? (ex: 0.719 for the 1st result)***

Hi,
I have a web form that lets users search for people in my database they wish to contact. The database returns a paged set of results using a CTE, Top X, and Row_number().
I would like to give my users to option of removing individual people from this list but cannot find a way to do this.
I have tried creating a session variable with a comma delimited list of ID's that I pass to my sproc and use in a NOT IN() statement. But I keep getting a "Input string was not in a correct format." Error Message.
Is there any way to do this? I am still new to stored procedures so any advice would be helpful.
Thanks
