Can You Ghost SQL Server?

Sep 25, 2002

I use Ghost and Sysprep to image the OS and core apps, but have never Ghosted the PC with SQL installed.

Is it necessary to restore the image to a drive THEN install SQL (as I currently do), or can I be lazy and Ghost the whole thing?

Can I Ghost An SQL Server?

Jul 23, 2005

I have a test environment that we rebuild servers on a regular basis. To streamline the process we use ghost. We will be installing SQL onthe servers and want to build a ghost image with that build. We havetested it by doing the build, loading the data, and then stopping allthe services and setting them to manual. After we Ghost the machine,we start up the services and reset them to Automatic. Seems to work.My question is:Are there any risks? Should I expect any adverse affects? Thanks for all your help!

You Can't Explain This! ARRRRG! SQL Ghost!

Dec 23, 2007

Hello all,
Where do I start?  My son and I wrote a small ASP.net 2.0 website on XP IIS 5.  Works ok with the standard login controls.
I FTP'ed the files up to a Windows server2003.  I installed the SQL publishing wizard.  I created a .sql file of the data base.
I ran the file in SQL2005 manager to build the data base on SQL express running on the Windows 2003 server.  It installed,  no errors.  great!
The website would not run with Data base connection errors ,  like files or data base was read only,  duplicate database ,  can not run mydatabase.create.  something like that.
I created a new app pool and made sure network service was the account.  Gave network server permissions to the folders,  it started working great.
Now sit down.  I created a few accounts using the website  ok,  no errors, Great!   Then check the database to see if the passwords were encrypted.  The new accounts were not there.
But the accounts went somewhere????   Must be two databases????  One hidden?
I detached the database I created with the .sql script file....  to see if I would get an error on the browser.  nope still worked. Hmmmm other hidden database still working.... I stopped database server
in the management tool,    It still worked....Ok, I'll get the house check for poltergiests.
I went to SERVICES.  The service was stopped(SQLEXPRESS)..  I changed auto start to manual.  Browsed back to the site again,  finally an error.
I restarted the service,  website worked again,  but the database,  the only user database,  is still detached.  Created more user accounts with no error....
Seached the hard drives for .MDF files.  Found the file I detached and also the ASPNETDB.MDF that I orginally FTP'ed to the server earlier in the APP_DATA folder of the website.  I renamed the
MDF file to see if then I would get an error,  yep I did.    It then automatcly re-created the MDF file exactly the same size.  Two files in the directory now and now a new error in the browser
about a database mismatch.  Ok  that makes sense.   But it will not allow me to rename the new file so I can rename the original.
Question is how does SQLEXPRESS run the ASPNETDB.MDF file in the web folder which is not attached to the database engine?
Why use a SQL pub wizard if ASP.NET creates the database automaticly? Or just "Runs" it?    AM I HIGH?
Thanks in advance,  before I take drugs and sit in a dark closet.
-Wade

Problem With Ghost Locking...

Sep 28, 2004

Hi

I just now had the strangest error, for some reason a table in my DB was locked by two processes, there is no use with BEGIN TRANSACTION in the queries that execute on the DB and while it suddnely happaned no heavy process was running... I was just browsing the table with the enterprise manager.

After viewing the processes with sp_lock I found the two processes that caused the locking and killed them, this fixed the problem, but I would like to know what caused it...
When viewing the process info with sp_who the status was "sleeping" and in sp_lock in one process the type was "key" and the status was "wait" (mode "s").

Any ideas ?
I'm using SQL-Server y2k + sp3.

Thanks,
Inon.

Orphan / Ghost Connections

Sep 6, 2007

Hello,

I have a VB program which uses ADODB.Connection to make connection to SQL Server DB.
However, under some circumstances, orphan / ghost connections remain in DB even after the VB program closed.

Here are the facts...

(1) Windows Server 2000 + SQL Server 2000
- run the VB program and made connection to the DB, leave it for 3 minutes, the connection closes when the program closes.
- run the VB program and made connection to the DB, leave it for 3 hours, the connection closes when the program closes.

(2) Windows Server 2003 + SQL Server 2000
- run the VB program and made connection to the DB, leave it for 3 minutes, the connection closes when the program closes.
- run the VB program and made connection to the DB, leave it for 3 hours, the connection does not close even after the program is closed.

Does anyone know if there is any problem with Windows Server 2003 + SQL Server 2000 using ADODB.Connection?
Or is there some kind of "timeout" parameter for which I can set to resolve such issue?

Any help is appreciated!!!

Thanks & Regards,
Andy.

Paging Records On SQL 2000 : Followup Question

Jan 26, 2007

You are right, I did not include the exact query since it has a wholeof joins and many where clauses in it.I did not want to make the post very hard to read, hence I simplifiedit. In the Stored proc I am using a String variable @SQLStringvarchar(2000) to hold the entire select statement, and then executingthat SQL using EXEC (@SQLString).Thus for debugging, I used Query Analyzer, and within the Analyzer I amusing the Select statement. So in my test I do not use any stored proc.so one select statement says:Select * from ( Select Top 600 * from( Select Top 2000 * from( Select Top 2000 PermitNumber, HouseNumber, OnStreetName,FromStreetName, ToStreetName, WorkStartDate as "WorkStart",tbl_Permittee.Permittee_name as PermitteeName, PermitteeNumber,PermitType_ID as "Type",InspectionDistrict,PermitStatus,IssueDate

Maximum Number Of Records Per Second That Can Be Inserted Into SQLServer 2000.

Apr 7, 2006

Summary: Maximum number of records per second that can be inserted intoSQLServer 2000.I am trying to insert hundreds (preferably even thousands) of recordsper second in to SQLServer table (see below) but I am getting thefollowing error in the Windows Event Viewer Application log file:"Insufficent Memory......"And very few records were inserted and no errors where sent back viathe JDBC.By removing the indexes on the table we have stopped getting the errormessage and have managed to load the table at 300 records per second. However I have couple of questions:1) Are the indexes definitely to blame for this error and is thereanyway of getting around this problem i.e. keeping the indexes in placewhen inserting?2) How should I configure SQLServer to maximise the speed ofinserts?3) What is the limiting factor for inserting into SQLServer?4) Does anyone know of any metrics for inserting records? At wantpoint should we consider load balancing across DBs.I currently populate 1.6 million records into this table. Once againthanks for the help!!CREATE TABLE [result] ([id] numeric(20,0) NOT NULL,[iid] numeric(20,0) NOT NULL,[sid] numeric(20,0) NOT NULL,[pn] varchar(30) NOT NULL,[tid] numeric(20,0) NOT NULL,[stid] numeric(6,0) NOT NULL,[cid] numeric(20,0) NOT NULL,[start] datetime NOT NULL,[ec] numeric(5,0) NOT NULL,)GOCREATE INDEX [ix_resultstart]ON [dbo].[result]([start])GOCREATE INDEX [indx_result_1]ON [dbo].[result]([id], [sid], [start], [ec])GOCREATE INDEX [indx_result_3]ON [dbo].[result]([id], [sid], [stid], [start])GOCREATE INDEX [indx_result_2]ON [dbo].[result]([id], [sid], [start])GO

Add/Edit/Delete Records With Remote SQL Server 2000 Database

Dec 2, 2007

Using ASP.net 2.0 or Visual Web Developer Edition 2005 I could not find a single example with Datagrid Control or Form View Control, to achieve the basic functionality ofAdd/Edit/Delete Records with Remote SQL Server 2000 Database. When I searched for these examples I found many videos and examples using local database and in learning path of Visual web express editions, very goodexamples and videos using local SQL Server 2005 database, BUT not with the remote database.
My question Is it possible to get the basic functionality of Add/Edit/Delete Records with Remote SQL Server 2000 Database using ASP.Net 2.0 Datagrid and FormView controls?
This question looks like, a lazy developer question!! but, in my learning path I found GREAT videos in Visual Studio Web Developer Express edition and learned simple way of drag and drop the controls assign create local database and their connections, and few clicks to add/edit/delete records using datagrid and formview controls. In real life those are not much useful because many of web interfaces are with sql server 2000 and we need to convert them into ASP.Net. Similarly I wanted to drag and drop couple of controls and less coding etc. and accomplish basic functionality of add/edit/delete records using remote database sql server 2000.
If possible please help me out.
Wondering is it possible to get the functionality of add/edit/delete records using datagrid/formview with remote sql server 2000, the way they explained in bigginers learning videos ... I am referring to (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/express/aa700802.aspx)
If possible and you think it is possible please guide me to that URL where I can learn the great functionalty n implement..!!

How To Work With Huge Amount Of Records In A Table Using MSSQL Server 2000?

In

want to know, that which methodologies should we adopt, both regarding
front end and back end perspective, so the site could give optimised
performance. Also in place of a Dedicated Server, the Hosting Company
provides MSDE (that come with .net). Will this create any problem with
this project, that have such a huge table? Should we go for some
advanced database technique, such as, Clustering, Spliting Tables, etc.

Followings are the fields that the business table contains:

ID, Category ID (which comes from a Category table, each business is
under a category), BusinessName, SignupDate, Address1, Address2, Phone

Deleting Old Records Is Blocking Updating Latest Records On Highly Transactional Table

Mar 18, 2014

I have a situation where deleting old records is blocking updating latest records on highly transactional table and getting timeout errors from application.

In details, I have one table called Tran_table1 in OLTP database. This Tran_table1 is highly transactional table, it will receive data for insert/update continuously

While archiving 2 years old records from Tran_table1 into Tran_table1_archive in batches(using DELETE OUTPUT INTO clause), if there is any UPDATEs on Tran_table1,these updates are getting blocked and result is timeout errors in application.

Is there any SQL Server hints to avoid blocking ..

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Renumbering Remaining Records In A Table After Some Records Deleted

Dec 3, 2014

I have a table with about half a million records, each representing a patient in my county.

Each record has a field (RRank) which basically sorts the patients as to how "unwell" they are according to a previously-applied algorithm. The most unwell patient has an RRank of 1, the next-most unwell has RRank=2 etc.

I have just deleted several hundred records (which relate to patients now deceased) from the table, thereby leaving gaps in the RRank sequence. I want to renumber the remaining recs to get rid of the gaps.

I can see what I want to accomplish by using ROW_NUMBER, thus:

SELECT ROW_NUMBER() Over (ORDER BY RRank) as RecNumber, RRank
FROM RPL
ORDER BY RRank

I see the numbers in the RecNumber column falling behind the RRank as I scan down the results

My question is: How to convert this into an UPDATE statement? I had hoped that I could do something like:

UPDATE RISC_PatientList_TEMP
SET RRank = ROW_NUMBER() Over (ORDER BY RRank);

but the system informs that window functions will only work on SELECT (which UPDATE isn't) or ORDER BY (which I can't legally add).

Need Efficient Query To Partition Records By Type And Pull Top N Records From DB

Jan 18, 2008

I have a query similar to the following. The intent of this query is to retrieve the top 6 records meeting the specified criteria (LOGTYPENAME = 'Process Status Start' OR LOGTYPENAME = 'Process Status End' ) based on most recent dates. Please keep in mind that I expect to return up to 6 records for each unique LogProcessName. This could be thousands of different LogProcessNames with up to 6 records for each.

1) The table I am executing against currently is very large in size and thus takes a long time to execute against. It would seem there must be a more efficient query to get the results I am looking for?
2) CTE doesn't work on SQL 2000. I need a query that does.
3) I cannot modify the database itself in the process.

;WITH cte AS (
SELECT [LogProcessName], [LogBody], [LogDate], [LogGUID], row_number()
OVER(PARTITION BY [LogProcessName]
ORDER BY [LogDate] DESC)
AS RN
FROM [LOGTABLE]
WHERE [LogTypeGUID] IN (
SELECT LogTypeGUID
FROM LOGTYPE
WHERE LogTypeName = 'Process Status Start'
OR LogTypeName = 'Process Status End' ) )
SELECT *
FROM cte
WHERE RN = 1 OR RN = 2 OR RN = 3 OR RN = 4 OR RN = 5 OR RN = 6
ORDER BY [LogProcessName] DESC, [LogDate] DESC

Does anybody else have any idea that would yield the results that I am looking for and take into account items 1-3 above?

Thanks in advance.
