Giving Someone Read-only Access To A Database -- Beginner Question
Jun 29, 2007
Sorry for the simple question, but I'm not having any luck getting this to work: I need to give someone read-only access to everything in a database.
If someone could help me by giving me (or linking me to) a step-by-step, idiot-proof recipe for giving Bob in my office read-only access to the whole database, I'd be very grateful. And remember: I'm good at db programming, but completely ignorant on the subject of db admin.
I have a quick question regarding getting data from a SQL database but I am slightly confused as to the best way to handle it.
Basically on of the projects I am working on I need to send data to another company, there are several calls required to the database to bring back various options for changing the questions asked on the front end.
Up to now all that has happened is there has been a mutual agreement between myself and this other company and they have just had access to the database to call a series of stored procs which I have written for them to access the data. Recently however the situation has changed and my client wants me stop them accessing the database however they still need to recieve the information from the database they recieve now.
What will be the best way to handle this? My knowledge of SQL is farily limited presently and I am only ust getting into learning a lot more about it.
I have an existing MS SQL 2005 server which is used to maintain data that has been collected from various sources around a plant. A new system has been added on our network where the data is provided in a daily MS Access database. The name of the MS Access database changes every day.
I would like to use the job manager to run a Stored Proc every night to extract the daily data from the MS Access database. Is there any way to do this.
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException .... because the database is read-only
( I'm putting this here so searches can find it easier)
I got this idea from a related thread, but they used a NETWORK user that is obsolete in 2007.
I found that you have to edit the actual file properties on the ASPNETDB.MDF and ASPNETDB.LDF files so that the ASPUSER has full access. i.e. on the file properties, security tab, hit the Add button and type in ASP.NET then return. Back at the security properties, click on the 'Full Control' checkbox at the top. That took care of it for me.
This was after checking the IIS control panel for the properties on the folder that contained my application and App_Data folders to be sure that the "Write" checkbox was already checked, it was
Of course this assumes that you have installed the express version of SQL from Microsoft
Hi All, I need to give access to one user only to truncate a particular table. I am not able to frame exact query for this. However i can user EM and do it. But i wanted to know the query for this.
We log ship our production database tansaction logs to a secondary database on a separate remote domain.
Incidentally, this was not set up via the "Ship Transaction Logs" wizard, but instead we had to use the various system stored procedures after restoring a copy of the database on the remote domain in standby mode.
We now have an issue where users are unable to access the remote secondary database without having sysadmin privileges. Clearly we want to avoid this!
We want to be able to use Windows Authentication mode on the server of the secondary database. But since the two domains differ, is it possible to even achieve this?
How can we set up read-only access for users on the secondary database without giving them sysadmin privileges?
I just built a site and found out that the hosting company does not support MS Access, but does support MS SQL ODBC.
I have never used MS SQL, nor know how it works.
I followed the directions to upside my MS ACCESS DB to MS SQL DB and I am waiting on a login and password from the hosting company.
Do I have to have MS SQL software on my computer for it work? Do I need to keep my computer online in order for my site pages to connection with the MS SQL DB?
I just don't get how it works.
I am very new at this and I am trying to understand the fundamentals of how it all works.
Good morning, I'm trying to create a view on SQL Server based on a query that i use on Access. The query returns detailed data from a table based on ID's selected and saved into another table.
the thing is, on access it returns back 5 records<which is a correct output> , while on SQL. its returning only one record. what could be the issue here ?
Is it possible for a batch command to give access or add a new role for the user to database? Basically:
USE my_Database CREATE USER [User1] FOR LOGIN [User1] WITH DEFAULT_SCHEMA= [dbo]; EXEC sp_addrolemember 'Application1', 'User1' EXEC sp_addrolemember 'SQL_Read_Only', 'User1'
If User1 was already created then ignore that and run the exec sp_addrolemember. Next,
I am a total beginner to Pocket PC, and a 2-month beginner to SQL Server 2005 and Visual Studio 2005. I made a database Pillbox.mdf, and wrote a Windows Forms program to access it. It's really easy. I just added a Data Source, chose tables and Stored Procedures, and dragged them onto my forms. It automatically created adapter classes and a DataGrid for me.
Next, I wanted to do the same thing for Pocket PC. I did the same drag and drop thing, and was happy to see the empty DataGrid in the emulator (design-time) form. From here on, trouble. When I ran it, it said it could not connect.
So some questions:
1) Does my connection string have to change? It has 3 parts: machine name, database name, and security spec. It specifies my machine name. Is that ok? Is it known by the Pocket PC, or do I have to specify http something? Does my machine have to change any settings to become a "server"? It's just a standalone PC with no network. I understand the emulator chooses to pretend that it's not "on" my computer. Is the database name known by the Pocket PC? (Same type of question.) And is Windows authentication ok on a Pocket PC? Or must I create a name/password pair on SQL server?
2) When I went to modify my connection string, I noticed a setting to specify the Data source. For SQL Server 2005, it asks me for a dbo, but for SQL Server Mobile, it asks me for a *.sdf file. What type of file is this? Is there a way to generate this from my other database? Is it not possible to have the the Pocket PC app point to the same database as the Windows app? Oh... does the sdf represent the Pocket PC's local database? If so, then my question is just how to populate it. But I will also have to update the main database at some point. I guess I'm confused about how Pocket PC's are supposed to work.
3) Do I have to deploy SQL CE or something? I think I read that Visual Studio does it automatically. It's a bit hard reading blogs because many comments talk about things that are now contained in VS. One blog was talking about 7 dlls that need to be downloaded to the Pocket PC.
4) My application just has to get a table, store it on the Pocket PC, and allow the user to modify and update records. The bandwidth should be low, as the table is small and updates should not be frequent. Is this a reasonable design? What I am asking is if it's ok to have direct database access, or if I should package up the data in some custom format, and use a Web service to pass the data back and forth. I have read and understood articles why you should not pass a Dataset in a web service, but the point was just that web services can be interoperable, so why spoil that with MS-only Datasets. In my case, I just want to get this simple app up and running quickly.
I am in a project where we are using a vanillla Reporting Services 2005 with the builtin report portal. No sharepoint integration yet.
We have successful deployments where we limit access to different folders based on AD-accounts and groups. In this particular case I have a folder for which I would like to allow access to all AD-users within the entire company.
So basically I know how to limit access but I don't know how to enable access for everyone. Is there a simple way to do it? I have googled and search mshelp but I couldn't find anything. I will admit to the search being quite quick but as usual time is short.
when i try to import data from Microsot Access to Microsoft OLDB DB Provider in the "DTS Import/Export wizard", an error occurs: Error Description: [DBNETLIB][ConectionOpen (Connect()).] SQL Server doesnt exist or the access was denied. I'm using windows autentication and the data base of destination is <default>.
I have two database files, one .mdf and one .ndf. The creator of these files has marked them readonly. I want to "attach" these files to a new database, but cannot do so because they are read-only. I get this message:
Server: Msg 3415, Level 16, State 2, Line 1 Database 'TestSprintLD2' is read-only or has read-only files and must be made writable before it can be upgraded.
What command(s) are needed to make these files read_write?
i have a database which get refreshed every day from client's data . and we need to pull heavy data from them every day as reports . so only selects happens on that database.
we do daily population of some table in some other databases from this daily refreshed DB.
will read uncommitted or NOLOCK with select queries to retrieve data faster.
there will be no dirty read as there are NO DML operation in that database so for SELECT which happens concurrently on these tables , will NOLOCK work?
since the last upgrade SQL 2000 --> 2005, the biggest database I am working on (1.4 GB, with loads of binary data) keeps freezin at least one time per week. When I say 'freezin' I mean that you cannot query some of the tables as it gives a timeout error when trying.
I am not a DBA and I don't have any idea of what to do, the only thing which comes to my mind is that this database is too big, as if I go to the preperties window it says Space Available: 38 MB (what's that? there's really only 38 MB on this DB?). I tried re-writing all mainteinment plans (full backup every night, log backup every hour), but I realized that the database keeps freezing (and the backup jobs keep running untill you stop them).
I'm working in a team, and need to share a database between the group - we don't have the luxury of sharing a server and connecting to it.
So What we'd like to do is make a copy of the database schema, and then share that through our repository.
I figured I just need to copy the .mdf file from the sql server database folder, and put it in the visual studio directory to work on it?
So I've tried this, but when I try to create a TableAdapter to the database through visual studio, It gives me an "access denied". I figure this is probably something to do with security settings?
Do you think I'll need to change my Database connection from windows authentication to sql authentication?
I don't really know exactly how to do what I'm trying to do, so any help will be appreciated.
I've searched and could not find what I was looking for. I have NO database experience but need to learn quick
I have an html page with an iFrame (flash menu on left - iFrame on right) When I click a product image on the left this is what I need to happen. - Flash send a variable - The iFrame to load an HTML page that will populate with an image, 2 text fields, and 3 hyperlinks dependant on what product is clicked in the flash.
I am using access since it is what i have at work, and i can just add all the products in a table pretty quickly and easitly. I set up a table in access with the image, hyperlinks, and text that needs to populate in the html page. The HTML page is set up in tables if that makes a difference...
I just don't know where to go from here to make my connections and how to set it up.
Hello! Is it possible to pass a stored procedure a parameter, say @table anduse it as a table in the sql command? Finally i want a proc to copy tables from a database to another database.THERE IS MY CODE:CREATE PROCEDURE [user].[copytable]@dbSRC varchar(100),@dbTRGT varchar(100),@table varchar(100)ASBEGIN TRANSACTION FreeAndCopyTableTRUNCATE TABLE [@dbTRGT].admin.[@table]INSERT INTO [@dbTRGT].admin.[@table]SELECT *FROM [@dbSRC].admin.[@table]COMMIT TRANSACTION FreeAndCopyTableIF @@error <0 GOTO E_Copy_FailE_Copy_Fail:ROLLBACK TRANSACTION FreeAndCopyTableGOthanks in advance, muh
I am getting some problem in using group in sql server login.
i have two NT groups in windows.i) developer and tester
I added a user Lalit in both gruop. I want to give db_owner permission on a particular database(Employee) to developer group and data_denyreader and deny_writer on same database(Employee) to tester group.
Now when i logging in to sql server using Lalit(windows authentication) iam not able to access the database(Employee).
Now my concern is that Lalit should have full access to the employee database when entered as developer user and limited access to employee database when entered as tester user.
Created a maintenance plan to backup my sharepoint databases. When I execute it the following error occurs: Execution failed. See the maintenance plan and SQL Server Agent job history logs for details: Additional Information: Job 'SharePointBackUp.Backup_SharePoint faild. (SqlManagerUI) - Execute maintenance plan. SharePointBackUP (Error) Messages * Execution failed. See the maintenance plan and SQL Server Agent job history logs for details.
When checking the Maintenance PlansharePointBackUP log it is empty! Under Job History I thinks this: Date 4/18/2008 12:55:35 PM Log Job History (SharePointBackUP.Backup_SharePoint) Step ID 1 Server DESD7 Job Name SharePointBackUP.Backup_SharePoint Step Name Backup_SharePoint Duration 00:00:00 Sql Severity 0 Sql Message ID 0 Operator Emailed Operator Net sent Operator Paged Retries Attempted 0 Message Unable to start execution of step 1 (reason: line(1): Syntax error). The step failed. line 1? Is that line one of the T-SQL statement? Because if that's the case then it's not because I copied and pasted the line in to a query and it executed without error. Under SQL Agent there are no entries! So what bloody log am I suppose to be checking?! This is very frustrating. I then copied and pasted every sql statement in to a query and THEY all ran just fine.
What's going wrong here, and how can I correct it?
I have SQL Server 7 database & I need to create some interface between users & database to let users see what is in the database, but not let them change or destroy data. Do I need to create some other database in-between users & the original database? Users can't program & want access to all data.management doesn't want to create a replication of the database. They want to let users have access through MS Word or Access. What could you advise me?
Hi, How can I provide a user read only access to all the databases on the server. I have 15 databases on the server. I know I can give db_datareader access in each database individually but that is time consuming and I have 10 servers for this to be done.
Hello, We have SQL Server 2005 with 300+ databases in it. It was set up by the conractor. How can I create new account with read-only access to all databases? Is there any "quick" method of doing it (like in Sybase, it is very easy). I've created new login, but I do not see where can I set up the permissions properly. Thanks
Hi guys, I want to give someone read only permission to our SQL server so they can log in and look at the database structure and query a few tables. I've set up the user but the problem is that when I connect in SQL server remotley, it shows all the other DB's on the server even though it is restricting access to them. Can these other DB's be hidden so that only the DB the user has access to shows up?
I have a data file that I converted from Access to SQL Server using theupsizing wizard. I then attached the tables to the Access front end using anODBC connection. I have one table that is read only for some reason. I'mnot sure how that happened, it went through the same procedures as the othertables in terms of upsizing and connecting. The original table was not readonly or hidden or anything else, it had full permissions.I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting the table but still the samething. In SQL Server, the permissions are the same as all the other tables.I can't seem to figure out what's making this one read only.I'm using SQL Server 2005 Express and Access 2003. Any ideas would begreatly appreciated. Thanks!
Hi, We currently use an access database to manipulate data in tables on a SQL server. The end user copies a list of ProjNo from a spreadsheet into an Access table. The Access table is used as the criteria for 5 Access queries. It is common that one of the queries does not get run.
I figured I would create a Storied Procedure on the SQL server, call the storied procedure from MS Access using the MS Access table as the criteria to run the Storied Procedure. I do not know how to provide the Storied Procedure the ProjNo in the MS Access table. The number of ProjNo records in that table can vary.
I've found info on how to add one record at a time but I need a more of a batch process approach.
I am facing a very weird issue in our SSAS database. We have several roles with 'Read definition' access. None of these roles are able to see data in the cubes. I have checked these roles over and over and there is no problem with the definition. Each of the roles have been given read access to Data Source, Cube and Dimensions.
The users are able to access the definition and structure of the cube i.e. they can see the measures & dimensions available but when they drag measures and dimension attributes in the browser (SSMS) OR execute an MDX - they get null values. The roles with 'Full Control (administrator)' access are able to see all the data without any issues.
I have tried the following:
1. Deleted all roles and re-created. 2. Created roles directly on SSAS DB. 3. Deployed all objects and processed the DB.
Each time only the admins are able to see the data.
