Cannot Open Connection Dialog When Starting SQL Server Management Studio

I start SQL Server Management Studio on my workstation and get the following message.

I had SQl Express version installed previously and everything worked. I could connect to one server running SQL Express and a different server running full up SQL 2005 enterprise version.

I uninstalled All SQL express programs and installed tools from SQL 2005 developer.

I have rebooted, started the program directly (not using a link of any kind) and all attempts fail. After dismissing the error msg the tool opens and I can run queries agains the DB but the database engines and related tables do not show.

My work station is Windows XP with SP2 installed.

I have googled the problem extensively and tried solutions found but none have solved the problem.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Management Studio Crash, Connection Failure

Jan 23, 2008

I have a problem establishing multiple connections in Management Studio. It is hard to describe, but it happens consistently when I try to open a new connection.

I can connect to the database engine successfully but when I try to open a "new query" the application just goes away without any errors. Both of these features requires their own connection and currently I cannot open both of them together and constantly have to switch back and forth by closing the tool. There are no messages in the sql error log, event viewer or windows log.

I believe it may be a problem with the installation of Management Studio because I only get this problem through my remote connections. I don't encounter this error when I access the server through Management Studio from my workstation and open multiple connections.

Has anyone seen this or can someone offer me some direction as to where to look?

SQL Server Management Express Studio Management Tools

Apr 5, 2007

I have recently installed the SQL Server Management Studio Express but I do not find Management Tools in order to create scheduled backups and shrinking of the databases. I was under the impression that this should be included in the Management Studio. I use the SQL 2005 Express for smaller customers who run the SQL on a desktop unit. I need a way to backup the data to a server machine for backup purposes. I have uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail.

Visual Studio Database File And SQL Server Management Studio Express Question

Mar 17, 2007

I have a database in my "App_Data" folder of my visual studio project.  I can view it fine in Visual Studio's built-in tools for managing a database attached to a solution.  However i recently started playing around with the SQL Server Management Studio Express program.  When i attach my database to Management Studio, and try to run my program it crashes.  I think it might be a permissions error?!? When i detatch it and reattach it in visual studio it runs fine again.   Any suggestions? ThanksJason

Visual Studio 2005 Standard And SQL Server Management Studio?

Sep 4, 2007

I am new to visual studio and I am still not sure of all its components and features.

I installed visual studio 2005 standard edition but cannot find SQL Server Management Studio?

I guess this must be because it is not included with Visual studio 2005 standard. Is it included with VS 2005 professional?

I want to add pictures of products to my shopping site using an SQL database and I’ve been told that SQL Server Management studio is required as it is a graphical tool.

How would I go about obtaining the SQL server management studio. There seems to be different versions of SQL server that it is confusing to know which one to purchase.

Will the SQL server 2005 version that comes with Visual studio standard be sufficient for me now right? I want to create a shopping site with hundreds, perhaps even thousands of products. I want to use an SQL server 2005 database. The database will include ‘dynamically generated’ product images if that is the correct terminology.

My goodness, it seems I still have so much to learn.

Thanks

GoDaddy + SQL Connection String

Aug 27, 2007

I know this has to be answered somewhere, I just need to know, am I going crazy.  I have a shared webhost account at Godaddy.  My web config was working at one point, but now I am getting this error:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)
Now, If I were to look at this, its telling me that it cannot locate the server I am trying to connect to.  Below is my connection string and the address I am getting this from is in my information at godaddy.  Tell me, is there something that I am doing wrong here?
 <connectionStrings>
<add name="Personal" connectionString="Server=whsql-v20.prod.mesa1.secureserver.net;Database=azwd30;User ID=XXXXX;Password=XXXXX;Trusted_Connection=False" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /><remove name="LocalSqlServer"/>
<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Server=whsql-v20.prod.mesa1.secureserver.net;Database=azwd30;User ID=XXXX;Password=XXXXX;Trusted_Connection=False" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
</connectionStrings>
With the same user name and password, I can access the database through Godaddy's site and see my records, and the address 'whsql-v20.prod.mesa1.secureserver.net' is the same as whats on Godaddy's SQL configuration page, the database name is the same, I have double, triple and spent hours checking all that could affect this... I may just be burnt out using Godaddy.  It seems I fix one thing, then there is another thing, I fix that, then there is another.  I talk to support, and they say, they dont support anything that they have in their sales page for what they offer.  I'd rather get support to say somthing like:   "You may want to go to google and press the I'm feeling Lucky button. It would be probably be faster and cheaper than using our department, or you can upgrade to our virtual server and have a little more control, not total control but a little more ... what do you say mr Chris?"
Well, I feel almost a little better venting here.  Since I have been with GoDaddy, and I live in the same city where they host their servers, I have been in shambles wondering how they can offer all that they do in their sales pitch and then drop a ball and say, we dont support 90% of what you read in the beginning.  It almost wants to make you put a huge NoDaddy.com sticker in your back window and drive around town all day in gas with the same money you give to them.  Ok, now I am done venting, any Idea's anyone.???

How To Solve SQL Connection Problem On Godaddy?

Apr 13, 2007

Hello all,
I am hosting at Godaddy and using their SQL 2000.
Before, I used to use "Try, Catch and Finally" for my SQL connection. However, I received this error "Timeout expired.  The timeout period elapsed prior to obtaining a connection from the pool.  This may have occurred because all pooled connections were in use and max pool size was reached." so often that I changed it to "Using { .... }". Yes, the error doesn't come back as often as before.
Today, I encounter that problem again and my connection to the db is locked, because of that error. Is there away to prevent this from happening? Should I check to see if the connection is still opened before open another one? In case like that, if the connection is still opened, should I close it first before opening a new one OR can I use it too?
Any advice would be appreciated. Cheer ...

SQL Server Management Studio

Hey everyone,
Would someone please tell me why the new SQL Server Managment Studio comes with hardly not frills?  What happened to the SQL Enterprise Manager in SQL Server 2000? It had DTS, SQL Agent Job and step viewing, Cool Wizards.. All that great stuff. but with this new Sql Server Management Studio with 2005 all I can do is pretty much look at the data and write queries and create and modify tables. Am I missing something?
I did download an external tool which was called an import/export wizard but it sucks compaired to the DTS in SQL 2000.
I did notice when I open my Sql Server Management Studio "Express" that it is the Express version... Is there a difference?
Thanks for any help.

SQL Server Management Studio

I have installed SQL Server Management Studio (for SQL2005) to a pc. When the user boots the pc, the following error is received:

fmaagent.exe - Common Language Runtime Debugging Services
Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.
Process id =0x328 (808), Thread id=0x32c (812).

Click Ok to terminate the application.
Click CANCEL to debug the application.

After clicking on OK, the pc continues on its merry way and boots up successfully.

Does anyone know what would cause this error? I have checked the Microsoft site but did not find this error listed among the documents.

The PC is running Windows XP.

Where Is SQL Server Management Studio?

Feb 22, 2006

I have the "Ready to Launch" package, which includes Vidual Studio 2005 Standard Edition, SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition and something else called BizTalk Server 2006.

Anyway, Visual Studio is spread across two CD's and I have installed that. I now want to use the SQL Server Management Studio to administer a database I have running on a website. Anyway, SQL Server is on a DVD and when I put it into the drive it comes up with the autorun screen. I noticed that in the top left corner of this screen it says "SQL Server 2005 (Disc 1 of 2). However, there is no second disc, so I'm wondering if this is a problem or just a typo left over from the CD version.

There is two options in the menu under Install, "Server Components, tools, Books Online, and samples" and "Run the SQL Native Client Installation Wizard." I have tried both of these options and I still don't have the SQL Server Management Studio. In fact if I select the first option, when I get half way through the wizard, it asks what components I want installed. I cannot see any reference to the SQL Server Management Studio in this list, so I just select everything to be sure.

Once it has finsihed installing, all it does is create a Start Menu folder called "Microsoft SQL Server 2005" and another folder inside that called "Configuration Tools." This folder just contains a few things like configuration manager and surface area configuration, etc...

So where do I find this SQL Server Management Studio? Have I done something wrong or am I missing something (like a second disc)? I'm installing on to Windows XP, would that cause the problem? Do I need to be installing on to some sort of server OS (which I don't have BTW as I'm just a regular user looking for a way to administer my MS SQL database and I heard this tool was the way to go)?

I Need SQL Server Management Studio!

Hi,

I have just completely installed MS SQL Server 2005 Express Edition in MS Server 2003.
After installation, I only have the Configuration Manager, Error and Usage Reporting and Surface Area Configuration, listed under Configuration Details.

SQL Server Management Studio is not accessible anywhere.
I also do not have the folder C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90ToolsBinnVSShell in which the SQL Server Management Studio is installed.
What must I do to get this component installed?

In this article http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143219.aspx, it is also written in step 8 that there should be a "Components to Install" page. I have done the installations and uninstallations a few times, but I still do not have "Components to Install" page. In fact, after step 7, I am brought to the "Features Selection" page.

What can I do to solve this problem? Please help.
