I'm about 6 weeks into SQL and SQL Server (7) - I was wondering whether you could share your opinions about which language to use as a programming tool for developing apps for & with SQL Server. I'm choosing between C++ (Visual) or JAVA.
I already know C and the DB-Libe contains a lot of it but I'm kinda trying to expand some horizons. I'm ok with either C++/VC++ or JAVA but I only have time to learn (or be good at) one.
Any suggestions? (I'd like to hear what you think even if you say neither C++ or JAVA - maybe VB? What's easy and marketable is what matters most.)

To Have No FAT Partition - Good Or Bad For Server?

I'm installing a new SQL Server machine. During NT Server
installation our NT support guy converted the only 2GB FAT
C: partition to NTFS. So as of right now all my 4 8GB drives are
NTFS. I think it would be better to keep this C: partition in FAT
because, as of my knowledge, having FAT boot partition can help
to boot the machine in case of NT crash.
Is there anything that I'm really losing by this conversion to NTFS or I
should not be worried so much about it? Does it put my SQL Server
databases, database .dat files or NT Server in more danger situation
in case of any crash?
Or it's giving me some advantages?

Sql Server To MSDE - Good Choice?
Jul 20, 2005Hi - I have a rather unreliable host just now - but they offer .net, sqlserver and SSL for a reasonable price.Problem is, the domain is hosted on a shared server - and it keeps goingdown apparantly because of code which is less than clean, on somepeoples sites. (ie. not closing connections etc).I am considering moving to a decicated server - but at this point intime, cannot afford a full SQL Server licence for it - however, thededicated server does offer MSDE. Is it acceptable to go back to usingthis from SQL Server - for a currently low hit site - ie. around 500hits per day.Does MSDE offer stored procedures (I don't use views or triggers)? Any Good SQL Server Intermediate Training Courses?
Mar 9, 2004Quick question. I am in the NYC area (Westchester) and I am using Cognos DecisionStream to build my SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Data Warehouse.
I want to learn more about complex SQL, specifically for SQL Server.
What do you reccommend? Should I go for strictly an advanced SQL course, or should I go for SQL Server training.
Does anyone know of a really good site where I can find Advanced SQL training?
Also, I want to learn more about scripting and VB. Can anyone reccommend a place where I can get this beginner training.

Is It Good Idea To Replicate Sql Server Db Files?
Jul 20, 2005Hi.I am wondering if it is a good idea to replicate sql server db filesusing frs.I don't really know how the frs works, sodoes frs replicates the whole database from time to time or just theportion that is changed?Also if the db is expected to change very often, and wouldn't it makethe whole system down?I wonder if it's a good idea just to make a backup of the database andcopy it.What's the usual practice?

What Is A Good Tool For Modeling A SQL Server 2005 Database?

I need a tool that will let me model a SQL Server 2005 database and then generate the tables, constraints, etc. from the model. I've never used a modeling tool so my knowledge is quite limited. I don't need to model or reverse engineer an application - my sole concern is on the SQL Server database side. I'm not concerned if the tool integrates with Visual Studio. And, of course, price is one consideration.
Are there any good tools that I should look at?

Aug 1, 2007At my current employer we are struggling with the best way to manage security and deployment of a project that contains databases, SSIS, SSAS and SSRS components, using configurations.
Environment (Dev):
3 SQL Server databases, all using mixed-mode security, using SQL Server security credentials.
12 SSIS packages; one master package, eleven child packages, 3 shared data sources
1 SSAS database; one cube, 15 dimensions, three referenced data sources from the SSIS project (in same solution)
6 SSRS reports, one data source to cube (not shared- doesn't appear SSRS can share datasources among other projects in the solution? Why?)
Everything runs fine in development. Now comes the tricky part.
Deploying SSIS and SSAS into production environments:
-Packages use XML config files for connection strings to three relational data sources.
-Deploy to SQL Server storage. Deploy wizard copies package dependencies (including XML config files) to default location set in INI file. When I do this, no config file shows up in remote server (remote server not set up identical to local, so directory does not exist. Need UNC path?) So, being a developer with no "special" permissions on the PROD server, what security permissions is allowing the deployment wizard from copying files to this location on a production server?
-Using a deploy script using dtutil doesn't copy the SSIS dependencies. Is this matter of using COPY or XCOPY to copy the configuration files to the dependency location? Again, in real-world practice, do developers typically change this location in the INI file to another location, or stick with the default. In either case, how does security work that allows files to get copied to the remote folder? (i.e. manual, or SQL Server manages this file folder permission through some other magic)
When using SSMS and running the package after being deployed on the remote server, if the config path is the default (e.g. C:program filesMicrosoft SQL Server90DTSPackages...) it appears to be read from the local machines directory rather than the remote machines directory path (do I need to use UNC paths? The wizard doesn't give this option it seems)
-When scheduling the job from SQL Agent, does the proxy account need permissions to the folder the config files sit in?
-What about the roles security on the packages themselves? Where does the server roles come into play (dtsltuser, dtsadmin)
-Because the SSAS project uses connection references to the SSIS project in BIDS, and SSIS project uses configurations, will SSAS pick up on these connections?
-What about impersonation levels for SSAS? Leave all data sources set to default, and set the database impersonation level to "UseServiceAccount"? What if the developer is not the same as the OLAP administrator on the production server? In this case, Use Service Account isn't an option, and neither is the current users credentials.
-SSAS database also has security for Full Control, but still doesn't prevent security at the data source level within the database (talking about impersonation level, not source db credentials)
-How can SSRS connections leverage other shared connections?
As you can see, there are a ton of security considerations, none of which are intuitive and can be configured multiple ways and actually work (and a ton of ways that won't work).
I need a simple cheat-sheet about each step to take to configure this so multiple developers can work without interruption, hot-deploying SSIS, SSAS, and SSRS changes into different environments (QA, PROD).

works perfectly, but the opposite - when I need to pass
a column name as a parameter - the SQL Server 2000 cursing me...
I was designing some stored procedures and here is what I need:
... WHERE (@COLUMNNAME = 1)
^^^ I need to use a different column names here, so I decided to use
a parameter, but it does not even budge. Of course, I can use workaround:
IF @COLUMNNAME = 'External' THEN
BEGIN
SELECT ... WHERE (External = 1)
END
But, I SO! do not want to do it 9 times - I have 9 column names
to check...
Maybe, there is another way to do it?..

I've Never Been Good With Relationships
Feb 15, 2004I'm having some trouble working out how to query some data. Rather than explain up front, here's some examples of what I want to achieve:

I've got a structure which looks vaguely like this:
[ANCESTORS]
Grandparent
Parent
Child
If limit by grandparents, then I only get the lineage for that particular grandparent. I.e.:
SELECT *
FROM [ANCESTORS]
( some sort of joins here )
Where Grandparent.Name = 'Cybill'
This would return all of the children of 'Cybill' and their children. Now, if I use the following query:
SELECT *
FROM [ANCESTORS]
( some sort of joins here )
Where Child.Name = 'Jean'
This would return Jean's parents + the parents of Jean's parents (Jean's grandparents).
Likewise, if I enter:
SELECT *
FROM [ANCESTORS]
( some sort of joins here )
Where Parent.Name = 'Ron'
Then I would get Ron's parents and also his children.
*******************************************************
So, as you can see, at first it appears that I'm after a LEFT JOIN - meaning that the grandparents don't need to have child records to be returned, but, then it turns out that I need INNER JOINS - to limit grandparents when I choose children.
Can anybody see my dilemma here?

What's A Good SQL Editor?

I'm wondering if there's a better SQL Editor than MS Query Analyzer on the market? I like a lot of the functionality provided by QA but want extra stuff like you get in VB6: intelli-sense (sytanx prompting), auto-complete (CTRL+Space provides list of sp's and tables, etc.) plus any other time saving features.
I've tried a few products but nothing quite hits the mark. Is there a program you use and recommend I trial?

Mar 7, 2005Folks, i've got a table with a column; ACCOUNT VARCHAR(30). All the values numeric though. (leave abt the datatype yet).
The column is clustered indexed.
SELECT * FROM MYTABLE WHERE LEFT(ACCOUNT,3)='123'
execution plan shows CLUSTERED INDEX SCAN.
SELECT * FROM MYTABLE WHERE ACCOUNT LIKE '123%'
execution plan shows CLUSTERED INDEX SEEK.
How, why. Why doesn't the optimizer works good for the first query?

Could somebody simply tell me if the answer at the bottow are correct, if not what I have done wrong.
A local company that produces machine parts has decided to develop an in-house database system. They have identified the following tables: -
tblOrders OrderNo, CustomerNo, Date, OrderTotal
tblCustomers CustomerNo, Name, Street, Town, County, Postcode
tblParts PartNo, Description, UnitCost
tblItems OrderNo, PartNo, Quantity, ItemTotal
Create SQL queries to produce the following: -
a) Details of all orders over £1000 sorted by customer
number.
b) A list of all part descriptions and their quantities appearing on order 39
c) Delete all orders placed by customers in
Wrexham.
d) Archive all orders placed by customer Clarke into a new table called
tblArchive.
e) Increase the price of all parts whose description includes the
word “washer” by 4%.

Need A Good Book...
Apr 27, 2004I've been a SQL Server dba for 5 or 6 years now. With the upcoming release (eventually, I'm sure) of Yukon/SQL2005, I've read that it's important for DBA's to pick up one of the .NET languages - I've figured, I'll try to learn VB.NET - I've had a little exposure to it, and can usually figure out what's going on in VB code I've read - however, I seriously doubt I could write anything in it from scratch - I want to learn it in a bad way - can you all recommend any self-paced books that will walk me thru it? I've never had any formal training with it, don't know a class from a DLL....Thanks in advance for your help!!
