Grant Backup Permissions At Server Level ?
Sep 5, 2006
Hi There
The backup database permission seems to only be at a database level , grant backup database and db_backupoperator role only exist at a database level.
However i want to permission to a user to backup any database, and he must not be a sysadmin. I cannot find a server level role that can backup databases.
How can i do this? There are alot of database so granting the permission for every database seems a waste of time, also one would have to remember every time a new database is created to grant this permission.
There must be a way to do this at a server level?
Thanx

It seems that SQL7 has lost the "Grant All" option previously available in SQL 6.5. Is anybody aware of an equiviant in SQL7?
Any help would be gratefully received.

Hello together,
can anybody help me. I'm looking for an easy way to grant permissions to a user in all user databases. I already have a script which grants permission to all views and userdefined tables within one database, but since I have to run it in about 100 databases it's still quite timeconsuming.
Is there a way to execute that script in all user databases at once ???

I have a larger stored procedure that is running, but I am getting stuck on where I need to grant permissions to a user in a a different database on various functions and stored procedures. For example:
Code Snippet
use [Database1]
grant exec on [Database2].[dbo].[MyFunction] to bob
returns this error: Cannot find the user 'bob' , because it does not exist or you do not have permission.
However, I know 'bob' exists, plus when I change the use statement to Database2, the line of SQL works correctly. Given the nature of the overall stored procedure this will be running in, I won't have the ability to just change the use statement. Is it possible to grant permissions to a user on a different database without explicity having the use statement set to a particular database?
Thanks for any advice!

However, when I view the permissions on the procedure, the role isnt there, what could I be missing ? The procedures were all created under the default or dbo schema. I could manually give the permissions to the role, but id rather have it scripted.

A question on the permissions hierarchy:
Since logins, database users, and database roles are both principals and securables - what does it mean to GRANT permission on a login/user/role to another principal? Does it mean that for a login - you can GRANT permission to EXECUTE AS that login or modify it, for example?

Hi,
I created a database,login,user and schema like belows.
-- 2. create database
CREATE DATABASE MyTempDatabase;
-- 3. create login
CREATE LOGIN MyTempLogin WITH PASSWORD = '#mytemplogin$',
DEFAULT_DATABASE = MyTempDatabase,
CHECK_EXPIRATION = OFF,
CHECK_POLICY = OFF;
--
USE MyTempDatabase;
-- 4. create user
CREATE USER MyTempLogin FROM LOGIN MyTempLogin WITH DEFAULT_SCHEMA = MyTempSchema;
-- 5. create schema
CREATE SCHEMA MyTempSchema AUTHORIZATION MyTempLogin;
The created user,MyTempLogin, must have permissions that can create tables,drop tables,select,insert,delete,update and bulk insert.
How can I grant permissions to the user?(or schema?)
I failed to grant by T-SQL query.
Additionally, what is purppose of the ROLE? Should I create or use it?
I'm confusing in security concept(login,user,schema,role).
Thanks.

I found this script online..
SELECT prin.[name] [User], sec.state_desc + ' ' + sec.permission_name [Permission]
FROM [sys].[database_permissions] sec
JOIN [sys].[database_principals] prin
ON sec.[grantee_principal_id] = prin.[principal_id]
WHERE sec.class = 0
ORDER BY [User], [Permission];
but the results are this: 2 columns - User and Permission
User Permission
User1 GRANT CONNECT
User2 GRANT CONNECT
IS there a way in SQL Server (2005/2008/2012) to run a script against a Database that will show all users that have permissions to that Database and the type of permissions?

We use Netbackup for our SQL servers to backup and restore databases. I would like the service account used by Netbackup to have as limited permissions as possible. The account should be able to backup and restore a db without being able to read any of the content. Right now the account jobs fail if the service account is not in the sysadmin role.
I removed the account from sysadmin and limited it to dbcreator and public but the job fail.
How to setup an account so that people who know the service account password can't log in with that account and read db information?

Does the xp_cmdshell proxy account need admin-level permissions on the server?
The reason I ask this is because I keep getting "Access is Denied" errors when trying to run this command as a non-admin:
master..xp_cmdshell dtexec 'some package'
The 'some package' has an "execute process task" which calls a batch file on the server.
If the proxy account is NOT a local admin, the "execute process tasks" fails with an "Access is Denied" error.
If the proxy account is a local admin, it executes fine.
We have given "Everyone" FULL CONTROL of all the folders that are affected by the batch file, and it still does not work.
I am out of ideas at this point. It just does not work unless it's an admin.
Are we missing something here?

I'm implementing row-level security in a SQL Server database that uses Microsoft Access for the front end. I'm using a UDF (a view behaves the same way) to restrict access to specific rows of a base table based on membership in a role. According to the reading I've done, if the base table has DENY ALL permissions for the role, and the UDF has GRANT ALL, members of the role should be able to update records in the base table via the UDF, without having direct access to the base table. However, I find that unless I grant appropriate permissions on the base table, the user is unable to update the table via the UDF.
Is this expected behavior? Nothing I've read suggests I should have to grant permissions on the columns of the base table.

I am writing a SQL 2000 stored procedure which uses an €˜EXEC @sqlString€™ statement. The @sqlString is generated at runtime. I want to give as few permissions as possible and currently allow users to access the database tables using only the stored procedures provided. However, with €˜Exec€™ I discover that I need to grant permissions on the actual tables to the users or groups. I would like to avoid this. I would also prefer not having to maintain a separate user with table level permissions and hardcoding the stored procedure with these details.
Is there anyway for me to dynamically generate the required SQL statement within my stored procedure and let SQL know that this stored procedure is allowed to select whatever tables it wants to without having to define permissions on the tables?

GRANT SELECT ON [dbo].[TblAreaCatmap] TO [admin] prevent grant from being automaticly add to each column?
Is there a way when you issue a grant select to a table or a view to not also grant select for each column.
The problem is when you use the grant command it automaticly adds the grant command to each column. I want to grant the permission at the table level so when the table is scripted it only has a single grant command instead of a grant for the table and a grant for each column which is not needed.
The sql managemnt studion interface will allow you to do this but onlt by using the interface. If you issue the above command from a query window it also creates A GRANT FOR EVERY COLUMN. How can I stop this behavior.

I am writing a stored procedure which updates a table, but when I run the stored procedure using a login that I have granted execute privileges on, then I get a message that I cannot run an update on the table. This would happen in dynamic sql... while my SQL has parameter references, I don't think it is considered dynamic SQL?
sproc:
CREATE PROCEDURE [schemaname].[SetUserCulture]
@UserID int
, @Culture nvarchar(10)
AS
UPDATE dbo.SecUser
SET Culture = @Culture
WHERE UserID = @UserID
execute SQL:
EXEC schemaname.SetUserCulture @UserID = 9, @Culture = N'x'
error:
The UPDATE permission was denied on the object 'SecUser', database 'DatabaseName', schema 'schemaname'.

I've searched enough to know that this ability probably doesn't existin our current setup, thus the reason I'm coming to the community now.When doing a database backup in Enterprise Manager (SQL Server 2000sp4), is there a priority level setting so that I can put less load onthe CPU? Our small office uses one server for everything and when I doa 12:00 pm full backup of our live DB, the server slows to a crawl forabout 4 or 5 minutes. I'd like to see the backup take longer but putless load on the server so we can to use it. If this setting doesn'texist, I may need to explore another backup method...but that's anothertopic for another day.Thanks,Gabe

On a member server, Server1, (not part of any domain) I've backed up my SQL 7 db to a local disk using a temporary device.
I go to a second member server on the same network, Server2, and try to do a restore from that file.
Fom ISQL, I get the error message that the device is offline.
The SQL server error log on Server 2 states that the file failed to open
with operating system error 1326 (logon failure: unknown user or bad password.)
I've tried taking ownership from server 2 but that does nothing. I'd like to copy the entire file to server 2 except that server 2 does not have enough disk
space for both it and the database it would recreate simultaneously.
I am signed on as administrator on both boxes.
Any thoughts?

Hi,
If we were to assign permissions to a backup agent such as Backup Exec to backup the databases on the SQL server, what role would give the least amount but sufficient permissions to perform the backup? I know domain admin would make the agent a local admin and therefore allow it to back up the database but is there a role available to allow backup only?
Please note that I'm referring to a domain account used by Backup Exec to directly backup the databases rather than sql server agent.
Thanks.

Hi all,
I'm experiencing a problem with SQL Server Management Studio Express.
I have a backup file (.bak file extension) of a SQL database saved in the directory c:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLackup
When I attempt to restore this file (by r/clicking on the database, selecting Tasks, Restore, Database and selecting File as the backup media), I get the message "Cannot access the specified path or file on the server. Verify that the necessary security privileges and that the path of file exists".
I have checked the ACL on the backup directory and the SQL Server 2005 local user has full control over that directory and all files within it.
Am I just being a numpty here, or is there something fundamentally wrong somewhere?

New SQL User...v2005. I have been directed to Grant "View Server State" permissions to a user. However, I don't see it in the list of choices I can grant access to in Permissions, nor is there a visible hyperlink in an area that it is expected to be. I have also tried setting that permission in a query window to no avail as well. I can provide additional info if someone would like to work with me on this issue. Thanks!
