Grid Vs Text Output
Nov 15, 2006
In SQL Query Analyzer, there is a Query drop down window that gives you
the option to change the output from grid to text for printing if
needed. My question is, can this be programmed so a stored procedure
will always print in text without having to manually change the window
each time the procedure is run? I could find nothing under the logical
searches in books online.
Thanks JAB

When I run my CLR/C# stored procedure inside Visual/BI Dev Studio, the results in a datatable are sent over pipe and displayed in output window without the grid format. I looked up inOptions and settings but couldn't find a way to change the format of output window to grid. I would like to be able to do that so I can copy/paste the results in excel.

I have written up a grid consisting of properties and units.The way it works is we have properties, and within properties there are units. They are two seperate tables.Some properties do not have any units so in the unit reference (UN_UREF) column for those records which do not have units and are NULL I would like to insert the text 'NO UNIT'.Please see below for my SQL for the grid which works fine.
create or replace view VWC_PROPMKUNIT_TEST AS ( SELECT
PR_SNAM, PR_NAME, PR_ADD1, PR_ADD2, PR_ADD3, PR_ADD4, PR_ADD5, PR_ADD6,
PR_POST, PR_OWN, UN_UREF, UN_NAME, UN_GFA
FROM PROP
LEFT JOIN UNIT
ON PR_SNAM=UN_BREF);
All I need to do now is insert 'NO UNIT' within the Unit Reference column where it is NULL.

I can create a string into a local "@" variable. It can include a date/time, and text for my timing testing.
I need to be able to send that string to the results window where table output goes, rather than to the message window where a PRINT statement goes.
How do I do that?

Hello,everyone!!
There is a query which when executed in the grid mode(ctrl+d) takes approx 0.02 seconds(about 21,000
rows) But when I execute in the text mode, it takes about 0.40 seconds!!
Why is this difference?
Also, when the records from this table are read from a VB application, they are equally slow (as in the text mode!)
Why is it so slow on the text mode & relatively faster in the grid mode?
Has anyone got any idea on ‘Firehose’ style cursor ?(which may speed up access of data in the VB application)
Rgds,
Adie

Hi,
How would I be able to query a table (ie. all people with last name 'Smith'), have that set of data outputted to a regular text file (in a formatted way)
And what's the best way to manipulate that set of data to let's say update a Yes/No field in that table to mark that that those individuals('Smith') which were outputted in that text file?
What about the reverse? If I got a regular text file with Last Name, Social Security(delimited by tab), etc is there a way I can get SQL Server to read that text file and make an update to the database based on the Social security in that text file.
Any help would be immensely appreciated!

Folks,
How can I program BCP to output text items in double quotes (")?
Here is an example (please try it) that trys to output some columns from a table to csv file. However, due to the existence of commas within the fields, the comma separation gets messed up.
------------------------------------
USE [MASTER]
IF EXISTS (SELECT 1 FROM sysobjects WHERE name = 'mcg1')
DROP TABLE mcg1
go
CREATE TABLE mcg1
(pkINT IDENTITY(1,1)
,Address_1VARCHAR(100)
,CityVARCHAR(100))
go
INSERT INTO mcg1 (Address_1, City) VALUES ('100 Road1, Suburb1' , 'BigCity1')
INSERT INTO mcg1 (Address_1, City) VALUES ('200 Road2, Suburb2' , 'BigCity2')
SELECT * FROM mcg1
Exec Master..xp_Cmdshell 'bcp "SELECT Address_1, City FROM mcg1" queryout "C:mcg1.csv" -c -t,"'
------------------------------------
The output I get is below. You can see how the use of commas in the text makes the comma separate list all confused
100 Road1, Suburb1,BigCity1
200 Road2, Suburb2,BigCity2
Thus what I want is
"100 Road1, Suburb1","BigCity1"
"200 Road2, Suburb2","BigCity2"
You can do this OK in DTS by specifying the text identifier to be double-quotes.
I do NOT want to use DTS and want to be able to do via a T-SQL procedure. Note that the real table I will export from has numeric datatypes and I would prefer NOT to wrap them in double-quotes too.
Thus, how can I alter the Exec Master..xp_Cmdshell command, to wrap each text field in double quotes. I may have to use a format file in which case please provide the format file too.
Thanks in advance

But I keep on getting this error message:

I am completely lost!! :confused:

Hi Guys,
I'm trying to figure out how to output a query as text instead of a tempory table...
I thought perhaps i could use this:
SELECT PRINT CustomerID FROM ORDER_TABLE
But that doesn't work
PRINT CustomerID FROM ORDER_TABLE
Doesn't work either...
I need this so i can print a customised invoice in SQL. That is, unless their is a better way of tackling this problem?
thx for reading :)

Hi,
I'd like to incorporate search functionality (SQL Server 2005 Full-Text Search) into a web application, so I want to be able to return a paged list of results based on the user's search terms. I already have a parameterized stored procedure that returns a list of products when a category ID is supplied. I modified this procedure to use a different input parameter (@SearchTerms), but I'd still like to return the number of records, as in the original stored procedure.
However, I'm getting this error: Invalid object name 'ProductEntries'.
Here's the original stored procedure:
ALTER PROCEDURE dbo.GetProductsByCategoryID
(
@CategoryID INT,
@PageIndex INT,
@NumRows INT,
@CategoryName VARCHAR(50) OUTPUT,
@CategoryProductCount INT OUTPUT
)
AS
BEGIN
SELECT @CategoryProductCount = (SELECT COUNT(ProductID)
FROM Products
WHERE Products.CategoryID = @CategoryID)
SELECT @CategoryName = (SELECT CategoryName
FROM Categories
WHERE Categories.CategoryID = @CategoryID)
DECLARE @startRowIndex INT;
SET @startRowIndex = (@PageIndex * @NumRows) + 1;
WITH ProductEntries AS (
SELECT ROW_NUMBER() OVER(ORDER BY ProductID) AS Row, ProductID, CategoryID, Description, ProductImage, UnitCost
FROM Products
WHERE CategoryID = @CategoryID
)
SELECT ProductID, CategoryID, Description, ProductImage, UnitCost
FROM ProductEntries
WHERE Row BETWEEN
@startRowIndex AND @startRowIndex + @NumRows - 1
END
And here's the modified one:
ALTER PROCEDURE dbo.GetSearchResults
(
@SearchTerms VARCHAR(200),
@PageIndex INT,
@NumRows INT,
@ProductCount INT OUTPUT
)
AS
BEGIN
SELECT @ProductCount = (SELECT COUNT(ProductID)
FROM ProductEntries)
DECLARE @startRowIndex INT;
SET @startRowIndex = (@PageIndex * @NumRows) + 1;
WITH ProductEntries AS (
SELECT ROW_NUMBER() OVER(ORDER BY ProductID) AS Row, ProductID, CategoryID, Description, ProductImage, UnitCost
FROM CONTAINSTABLE (Products, *, @SearchTerms, 25) AS c, Products p
WHERE c.[KEY] = p.ProductID
)
SELECT ProductID, CategoryID, Description, ProductImage, UnitCost
FROM ProductEntries
WHERE Row BETWEEN
@startRowIndex AND @startRowIndex + @NumRows - 1
END
I thought I might be getting this error because SELECT @ProductCount occurs before the ProductEntries table is created, but when I move that SELECT statement further down, I still get the same error.
How can I get the value of @ProductCount in this scenario so that I can display it in the UI of the web app?

I am running SQL Server 2000 and need to output query data to a text file. If I run the following query (Below) using XP_CMDSHELL and BCP, it runs fine and creates a text file with the data output.
However, I need to change the WHERE Field1=10 to a string value WHERE Field1='abc'. When I try to do this I get a general error on the Field1='xyz'. I tried to change the quotes, etc but I am still getting the error.
Command:
Exec master..xp_cmdshell 'bcp "SELECT Field1 FROM Table WHERE Field1=10" queryout c:filename.txt -U UserName -P Password /S SQLServerNam /c'

I have an stored procedure/DTS package that creates an output file that I FTP to a mainframe.
The vendor that is receiving the file expects negative amounts to be in a packed decimal format.
IE. Negative 95.46 = 0000954O
I've done a bit of searching to find a function for this, but I must be using the wrong words.
Any suggestions?

Hello,I am currently trying to assign some string to a TEXT output parameterof a stored procedure.The basic structure of the stored procedure looks like this:-- 8< --CREATE PROCEDURE owner.StoredProc(@blob_data image,@clob_data text OUTPUT)ASINSERT INTO Table (blob_data, clob_data) VALUES (@blob_data, @clob_data);GO-- 8< --My previous attempts include using the convert function to convert astring into a TEXT data type:SET @clob_data = CONVERT(text, 'This is a test');Unfortunately, this leads to the following error: "Error 409: Theassignment operator operation cannot take a text data type as an argument."Is there any alternative available to make an assignment to a TEXToutput parameter?Regards,Thilo
