Group By Query Casues TimeOut Error

I have a table with 6 million rows.
I'm trying to perform a group by query that incudes a row count of the
PK column:
SELECT COUNT(DataID) AS Cnt, Column1Name
FROM dbo.TableName
WHERE (Column2Name = N'p')
GROUP BY Column1Name
I have the query timeout set to 0 in Enterprise Manger. However, if I
run this query, either in Enterprise Manager or in Query Analyzer, I
get the following error message:
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Timeout expired
A little baffled as to why and how to run this query.
Any help is appreciated.

I have created a stored procedure which searches one or more requests (request is a table) according to the given parameters and returns Rows from Request table. I have used Full Text Search function i.e. Contains() in this Query. I have problem with Full Text search, when user first time executes query with Contains() function it works fine and continues working fine for 10 to 15 times or more executions. But after some searches the system starts saying Timeout Error. The very strange situation is that the application is developed in Visual Basic and if we run stored procedure through Visual Basic it says Time Out but at the same time when we run the same stored procedure with same parameters from SQL Server Management Studio, it runs immediately and takes no time in execution. Also I have tested the Stored procedure without the Contains function and in this case it works fine. It only hangs when we search for more than 10 or 15 times.
Does anyone know what is the problem here?, i am posting here my code too,

I kept getting the above error so then I try to access the table directly inside of MS SQL Server Management Studio and then I recieved the following error:
SQL Execution Error.

Hello,
I am researching alternatives to a stored procedure that uses a linked server query that my ASP page uses to retrieve records to the page.
Should I:
Use replication (Data is constantly updated, so a snapshot won't do. Merge replication?)
Break up the stored procedure into subqueries?
Use a view on the remote server instead of the actual tables?
I am trying to reduce the amount of table scans, what is the best way to do this?

I've been researching this problem for weeks and I haven't gotten very far with it so I was hoping to get some help here.
Here's the error information we get:
Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. ---> System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.
This particular error comes from a .net application, but we've seen similar "query timeout errors" from a vb6 application roughly 6 months ago.
Here are the facts we've narrowed down:
1) The timeout happens at seemingly random times (very sporadic).
2) It's currently only happening on a few stored procedures (if requested, I'll provide one of the stored procedures, but it's basically a complex search procedure).
3) To resolve the timeout error, we've found 2 temporary solutions:
A) have all clients exit the program thus closing all active connections (less than 10 connection in a 4-5 user setup)
B) I run the following script when the timeout occurs and then the stored procedure runs smoothly:

4) Running the stored procedure from our application and from SQL Management studio express, is the same, except management studio doesn't time out and actually runs as long as it takes (roughly 1 minute 20 seconds or under 1 second after the script above runs).
We're pretty stumpted and it's happened at 5 different client sites with little in common. One of our sites is even running SQL express off the workstation with nothing else running and it still occurs.
I'm open to trying practically anything at this point, but unfortuntenly we have not been able to reproduce this behavior in our testing enviroment so I can't give much information for others to reproduce.

We have been bothered with this problem for a while. Usually I happens in the early moring. Later on after the error is gone on auser, the error never happens again on any user for the day. Is this a web Server problem or an aspx.vb coding error? Thanks,Jeffrey

Hi All,
I have the same question and error that Chopaka is getting:
"I have a SQL 2005 job that calls a stored proc. The job step returns the message "Query timeout expired....Message 7412...The step succeeded." The proc never actually ever did anything due to the query timeout, and the job continued on to other steps. I'm going to address the timeout issue eventually, but first I'd like to trap the timeout problem and force the job to end.
It appears that the query timeout isn't really an error, just a message. I've tried TRY-CATCH in the SP but the situation isn't caught, again probably due to the interpretation that it isn't an error."
I have reduced the "Remote Query time out" to 1 sec, in order to catch the error and to prevent the job from running, but the error is not caught.
Is there a way to catch this in the SQL or in the job step to prevent the job from continuing?

Hi,
I am running a stored procedure that collects some records from two tables do some calculations with those records and insert those calculation result in a temp. table. I am calling this stored procedure in my aspx page and then later select all the records from temp table and show it in a table.
When I run this application on browser it give me Timeout expired error but whn I execute the stored procedure it runs properly but takes around 3:10 mins to execute in query analyzer. I did some google work and based on that I specified CommandTimeout = 300 for SP and Connection timeout=400 in web.config. But still it didnt worked. Sometimes it runs properly but sometimes its not.
Where I am doing mistake? and Wht should i do to resolve this? Plz. help.

This is what I did. I right click the App_Data folder and click Add New Item. Then I click the SQL Database. This is where I got the error.

get this error from our web application every once in a while. " Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding". I email
myself when an error occurs, and once every 2-3 days I get this timeout
error emails, like 5-10 emails in a span of few minutes. Then it goes
away. I have set the command timeout for 60 secs.
It
doesn't happen from the same stored procedure, actually I have seen it
timeout from really simple 1 or 2 line stored procedures, which shouldn't normally take 1 sec. Its like
sql server just shuts down for few minutes. We have some
backups and maintenance jobs scheduled, but they run only after
midnight. I have checked the
application event viewer, there are no warnings or
error messages for MSSQLSERVER. Can
any one tell me how to check whats going on during that short timespan
when timeout error occurs, and what causes it? I don't want to run sql
profiler continuously for 2-3 days, I am afraid it will slow down the

I have a user in SQL Server with a NT login of Mike
I changed his NT account to Mikel in User Manager
Now when I try to add Mikel, Im getting error 15401.
Do I need to delete NT login in SQL Server 'Mike' account first ?..before adding 'Mikel' ?
Can I go into the Master database and just change Mike login to Mikel ?

I've received this error twice over 2 days in the SQL Agent error log during off-hours from a server which has not had any changes to it in the last few months (once at 3:32AM and the next day at 3:46AM. I've been able to tie it to log-shipping backup jobs (all of which run under the SQL Service domain account) which run every minute. It seems to be only momentary, as the next attempt a minute later is successful.
I get the same set of messages for each database for the same time which look like this:

I can't find any documentation on these errors on the web or MSDN site. Can I chalk this up to possibly "winking" connection to our domain controller? We have several large government web sites that we help look after. We recently migrated one of them from SQL Server 2000 to 2005 and are having a problem with our nightly email job in that if it runs for more than an hour then after exactly 1 hour the email job gets a "Timeout expired" message back from SQL Server.
Our batch jobs do run on a different server and connect remotely to our SQL Server DB. I did change the connections - remote query timeout and increased it 10 fold, but this didn't make any difference. Is there any other parameter that may be causing the Timeout expired error after exactly 1 hour?

I need to figure out if my query is timing out due to row lock contention. The SqlException trapped in my client C# application contains Error Number 1205 but sometimes it contains -2.
I guess the SqlCommand timeout and the server timeout are the two possibilities. Is there a definitive way to find out that the SqlException was thrown due to one of these two reasons? Because if it's some other reason, I want to excute a different logic.

I was working remotely with few SQL Servers for a while without any problem.
The Servers are configured to use TCP-IP for the connection.
Then suddenly today I can connect to the servers in the Enterprise manager , but
not through the SQL Query Analyzer.
The error I am getting after waiting for a while the login ... Timeout Expired.
I've tried changing the Connection Settings under Options, but it did not help.
Nothing was changed in the Server/Client configuration.
Please advice

I was working remotely with few SQL Servers for a while without any problem.
The Servers are configured to use TCP-IP for the connection.
Then suddenly today I can connect to the servers in the Enterprise manager , but
not through the SQL Query Analyzer.
The error I am getting after waiting for a while the login ... Timeout Expired.
I've tried changing the Connection Settings under Options, but it did not help.
Nothing was changed in the Server/Client configuration.
The Servers affected are SQL 7.0. and SQL 2000
Please advice

I have encountered the following problem:
I currently develop an application for my company that actually uses rather long queries, with many records.
I have a particular query (Written using SQL string inside the .NET application rather than Stored proceedures),that needs to run in 2 databases (both SQL Server):
The first one is a test database that we use when in developing time quota to test our data
The second one is the real thing a data base that contains lots of records.
When criteria are placed in the query, it returs few records in both the databases , but if no criteria are placed (So it fetches all the records..) In the test Database works ok, but in the real one it "jams" till 30 seconds pass and I get a time out message...
I tried to change the Query time out time from inside the SQL Server from
Tools/Options/Advanced
but it doesn't seem to work out... it still times out after 30 secs
Any Ideas?

Front End: Access 2000 Project (.adp)Back End: SQL Server 2000I have an application that keeps timing out. I have opened theDataLink properties in the front end (File, Connection, Advanced tab)and set the timeout to 999. But the connection still occasionallytimes out.Any ideas? Hi everibody,it's the first time i post on this newsgroup. I'm Stefano from Milano,italy.I'm a beginners with Sql2000. My problem is this.I run a View using enterprise manager and after less then 20 second it goesin error time out. I run this view using a VB application and the errorcomes again .When i run it with Query Analyzer after 50 seconds it give methe right result.i've tried to change the value of querytimeout using sp_configure with thesame bad result.i've tried to change the ado command timeout in visul basic but stilldoesn't work.any suggest ?Thanks in advance

I have a strange problem running a stored proc in SQL 2000. The proc returns XML and I'm using ADO to call the proc and return the data as a stream. When I call the proc through ADO, it times out because it is taking 40 seconds to run and my command timeout is set to 30. I can increase this no problem but the strange thing is that when I run the same proc from within query analyser, it completes in under a second.
I put profiler on it tracing the command start and finish events and it's definitely taking 40 seconds between start and finish. The proc is used with various input parameters and the timeout is only occurring for some combinations of inputs, but it always seems to take much longer than it does when run from query analyser.
Can anyone suggest what might be causing the delay, or where I might look to find the problem?

I have the following Query running on my local SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition on Windows XP, and it needs only 2 sec. to execute. Then I transfered it to our production database, which is an SQL Server 2005 Datacenter Edition on a quad-core Xeon with 4GB Memory and the Query always runs in a Timeout. The version of my local Database is 9.0.3054 and the Production Version is 9.0.3042. 3042 seems to be SP2.

This Query filters all internal Applicationroles of a user which must be deleted for the specific user, because he didn't need them longer. Can it be, that it was a bug in the older Servicepack and it runs on my PC because of the newer one? My problem is also, that I didn't know what ServiecPack brings Version 3042 to 3054.
I also tried splitting the Query in 3 subqueries and using this 3 in a resulting 4th. It's the same!
Has anyone an idea

Using VB, I am running a bulk insert query from csv file into a newly created table. It works fine on small test files; but when I try it on the production data, I get a "query timeout expired" message and processing ends. The text files contain several hundred thousand lines.
How can I resolve this problem. I have several hundred of these csv files and more coming.

Hi All,I’m connecting to a database through a connection string <add name="ConStr" connectionString="Data Source=KXXX1-SQL;Initial Catalog=ROOTDATA.MDF;Integrated Security=SSPI;connection timeout=0" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/> but I’m getting the following error Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding I know this was handled previously in this forum and the remark was to set CommandTimeout = 0 How do I do that?

User r complaining tht they sometimes get SQLServer Timeout error.
on investigating i found tht suppose one user is updating the database which is taking some time and at the same time if another user tries to retrieve some data from the database he gets a timeout error after some time...........
However if the updateor insert action get over very quickly then the other user is able to retrieve the data ........
Is it bcoz tht the update statements r locking the datatables during the opperation and so the other user has to wait.. if tht is the case then wat is solution tht the other can retrieve the data without much waiting while one user is updating ........

Hi,
We were in the process of migrating our application from sql 2000 to sql 2005.
It is noticed that a particular method is giving us Timeout Expired error in SQL 2005 €“ Sp2, windows 2003 server sp1.
It was working perfectly in SQL 2000 and SQL 2005 (without any Service Packs)
After we installed the Service pack 2, the method call from Sqlhelper class
€œSqlCommandBuilder.DeriveParameters() €œ is giving the time out error.
We tried a round work by installing SP1 first and then installing a support patch from the following url
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917824 but still the method is giving the same error.
any kind of help will be greatfull.
