how can i guarantee that statements will be executed from top to bottom in a transaction batch like above? I am not interested in the errors in statements. I just want whole thing to either execute fully from top to bottom or none executes
I have some VB.NET code that starts a transaction and after that executes one by one a lot of queries. Somehow, when I take out the transaction part, my queries are getting executed in around 10 min. With the transaction in place it takes me more than 30 min on one query and then I get timeout.
I have checked sp_lock myprocessid and I've noticed there are a lot of exclusive locks on different objects. Using sp_who I could not see any deadlocks.
I even tried to set the isolation level to Read UNCOMMITED and still have the same problem.
As I said, once I execute my queries without being in a transaction everything works great.
Can you help me to find out the problem?

I have created a few packages and i want to execute this in a sequence so I created a wrapper/parent package and added all the other packages as child Package using the Execute Package Task. These packages are file system based packages. I am executing the wrapper/parent package from a web page which will execute all the child packages. All is well and works fine when I choose the TransactionOption as "Supported" in my wrapper/parent package but when I choose the TransactionOption as "Required" in my wrapper/parent package I get the following error
Error Occurred: The package is failed due to following: The SSIS Runtime has failed to enlist the OLE DB connection in a distributed transaction with error 0x8004D024 "The transaction manager has disabled its support for remote/network transactions.".
What I am doing is connecting to 3 DB in the same server and doing some data manipulation. The MSDTC is running in the Target SQL Server and also the DTC Server in my Local is started and running. What else could be the problem.

Hi! i need to clean the transaction log of a local database. I used to do this in SQL server 6.5 with the sentence 'dump transaction {DB} with no_log'. After this ran 'sp_spaceused @updateusage = 'true'' and the problem was corrected. How can i do this in version 7' ? Are the same sentences?

I have been asked to take over the maintenance on dB servers that I have not originally 'set up'. The request came as a result of the database log files growing at such a rapid pace its taking up hard drive space. I ran sp_dboption and noticed that the log files are NOT set up to truncate on checkpoint. As in SQL 2000 I wanted to determine if the dB was set up in 'simple' or 'full' recovery mode. It appears they are set up in 'full' recovery mode (which we can modify, since this is not a transactional dB and we rarely if ever have to restore from the transaction log). Hence my question,
Is there anything I need to worry about (regarding replication)if I change the dboption to truncate on checkpoint and set dB in simple recovery mode?
And after I backup the transaction log and try to shrink it will that have any adverse affects? I feel like this is all I need to do but replication is new ground for me, any information regarding it would be greatly appreciated. Also, any advice on how to maintain the transaction logs would be helpful.

I have just migrated the 6.5 SQL Server to 7 and the intial isze of Db growth was unlimited for 7.0 and so was the transaction log
, now the problem is that the trasaction log file has grown to 8GB, i truncated the transaction log and took a complete DB
backup now the log size is 90MB but i was to put restrictions on log growth to max of 1500MB but when i go to properties of Db
and try to change the log size to 1500 it says cannot change it as the size is less than max size, the max size it shows currently is 8GB
i was to re set it to 1.5GB how can i do that i have tried shrinking the file and relasing the space to OS but still the size it show to me
is 8GB.
What shold i do...

I have a database with around 2 GB space for the data and 5.8 GB for the
transaction log .
Now the problem is i do not have any more space on the system and data files requires more space than 2 G.B to execute some stored procedures .
Is it possible to decrease some space of the transaction log , say from 5.8 GB to 2 GB and allocate it to the data files .
My data and log files are on different drives . I did not find anything related to this topic in the BOL .
Can somebody help me with this problem ? Anthing related to this issue will be of great help to me since i have no expertise in this field .

i have two remote servers connected to each other through the linked servers.
i can run querries or even perform inserts as far as its not inside a transaction
but when i am trying to run distribted transaction but it keeps on returning the same msg.

We have an order posting stored procedure that's been executing for 14 hours now. This procedure has simple update statements but all the tables updated have triggers which update other tables with triggers and so on.
This procedure hasn't commited yet. I have a full database backup from last night and transaction log backup from this morning while it was running. I want to kill this job and restore database from last backup. Only thing I am afraid of is that it will take too long to roll back which I have no estimate of time. Is there any faster way to get rid of all the uncommited transactions? Has anybody rolled back such a massive transaction? Any idea on how long it can take? Can it affect the overall server performance as this is the main production ERP server.
I can see in profiler that this procedure is still running and not hung.

We have a database with 20 gig and with huge transactions. The transaction log backup is scheduled every one hour
from 3.00 AM to 9.00 PM.
We take a full backup in the disk at 9.00 PM and again a full backup in the tape at 2.00 AM
It works fine in the day from 6.00 AM and complete within seconds and the size is approx. 50 to 200 MB.
But the very first transaction log backup at 3.00 AM is running like 3 hrs and the size is approx. 11 gig whick is almost equivalent to the Full backup size. There are some dts packages that are running in the night and as usual reindex, intergrity checks are running and there no large user traffic during night. But I have no idea which the very first transaction log backup in the morning takes longer time and has this bug size. Is there any work around to fix this proble.

I'm getting this when executing the code below. Going from W2K/SQL2k SP4 to XP/SQL2k SP4 over a dial-up link.
If I take away the begin tran and commit it works, but of course, if one statement fails I want a rollback. I'm executing this from a Delphi app, but I get the same from Qry Analyser.
I've tried both with and without the Set XACT . . ., and also tried with Set Implicit_Transactions off.

I have a design a SSIS Package for ETL Process. In my package i have to read the data from the tables and then insert into the another table of same structure.
for reading the data i have write the Dynamic TSQL based on some condition and based on that it is using 25 different function to populate the data into different 25 column. Tsql returning correct data and is working fine in Enterprise manager. But in my SSIS package it show me time out ERROR.
I have increase and decrease the time to catch the error but it is still there i have tried to set 0 for commandout Properties.
if i'm using the 0 for commandtime out then i'm getting the Distributed transaction completed. Either enlist this session in a new transaction or the NULL transaction.

after moving off VS debugger and into management studio to exercise our SQLCLR sp, we notice that the 2nd execution gets an error suggesting that our static SqlCommand object is getting reused from the 1st execution (of the sp under mgt studio). If this is expected behavior, we have no problem limiting our statics to only completely reusable objects but would first like to know if this is expected? Is the fact that debugger doesnt show this behavior also expected?

Hi I am slowly getting to grips with SQL Server. As a part of this, I have been attempting to work on producing more efficient queries. This post is regarding what appears to be a discrepancy between the SQL Server execution plan and the actual time taken by a query to run. My brief is to produce an attendance system for an education establishment (I presume you know I'm not an A-Level student completing a project :p ). Circa 1.5m rows per annum, testing with ~3m rows currently. College_Year could strictly be inferred from the AttDateTime however it is included as a field because it a part of just about every PK this table is ever likely to be linked to. Indexes are not fully optimised yet. They are tested on a dedicated test server, and repeated running and switching the order of the queries elicits the same results. Sample data can be provided if requested but I assumed it would not shed much light. BTW - I know that additional indexes can bring the plans and execution time closer together - my question is more about the concept. Here's my case, I have written a stored procedure which will perform the following:
1. Grab data from a table using cursor,
2. Process data,
3. Write the result into another table
If I execute the stored procedure directly (thru VS.NET, or Query Analyser), it will run, but when I tried to execute it via a scheduled job, it fails.
I used the same record, same parameters, and the same statements to call the stored procedure.
Any idea?

We use windows NT authentication. We did not do any change on NT. The SQL Server daily schedule job usally stoped at 10:00AM, but today from the Window NT Task Manager, we can see that the SQL Server is still running untill now.

hi, I have settup up sql mail and did the following:
1. created an E-mail account and configured Out look by creating a pop3 mail profile. tested it by sending and receiving mail, that is ook
2. I Created one domain account for MSsqlserver and Sql Agent service. both services use same account and start automatically in the control panel-services
3. I used the profile that I created in outlook to test the sql mail but got an error:
Error 22030 : A MAPI error ( error number:273) occurred: MapiLogon Ex Failed due to MAPI
Error 273: MAPI Logon Failed
I really do not know what went wrong. I followed the steps from bol and still having a problem. Am I missing something.
I do have a valid email account
I do have a valid domain account
I tested outlook using the email account and it worked. so why sql server does not recognise MAPI.
My next question, How to configure MAPI in Sql server if what I did was wrong.
Hi, I have 2 windows 2000 server in cluster with sql server 2000 enterprise edition installed.
I have activated the Server-Requested Encryption by using the sql server network utility (Force Protocol Encryption). After this, I have stoped sql server service. But I can't start it at this moment.
The error is:
19015: The encrypton is required but no available certificat has been found.
Please help me to start sql server.

I have Full database backup upto previous day and transaction logfile of Today transaction. my database has crashed. I have restored previous day's Full backup. I have faced difficulty to restore today's transaction from today's transaction log. What are the steps to restore full database back and one day's transaction log file. Note: there is no differential database backup and transaction backup.
