HOW TO DETERMINE DB SIZE AND MACHINE REQUIREMENTS

Oct 30, 2000

I'm developing a website that will be suported by a SQL Server database. The estimated number of records for that database will be around one million. I'm concerned with the possibility of my machine being unable to respond to the needs of such a database so i decided to acquire a new one. How do i calculate the hard disk and RAM i'm going to need for this database to function properly ? I know that i can make a HD prediction by adding the sizes of each field of my database and multiplying by one million but i don't know how much KBs each field occupy (some of them -few- will even be free text fields). And the RAM ?

Help... Anybody ?

Thanks,
Carlos.

Estimating Memory Size/Config Requirements

Jun 4, 1999

Is there a way to see how much memory your current SQL Server install is using? I recently had to do some reconfiguring, and although it went fine, I'd like to build a spreadsheet model so I could see what different parameter values do to memory usage. I'm kinda surprised there isn't one already.

And yes, I realize that 99% of the configuration options go away in 7.0. We're going to have 6.5 here for a while yet.

Reporting Services :: Determine Objects Inhibiting Horizontal Shrink Of Tablix And / Or SSRS Report Size?

Jun 10, 2015

I am working on complex invoice document that handles various types of invoicing, credit, and progress bill customer facing documents.  I am faced with same problem I see many SSRS devs posting on.  And that is extra blank pages, being generated because the report width exceeds the width of the page.

My problem is I cannot shrink the horizontal width of the tablix and therefore the report width either...

While I would have done things differently if developing from scratch, the tablix in question has only one column and objects contained in rectangles are placed in the row/column cell.....The link to the image below shows the row I am currently working on.  Essentially all the client wants a columnar report with column lines, closed footers, etc...  so rather redoing the whole tablix, which I still might do, I am using rectangles with the column then lining them up.  Anyway, that is a whole 'nuther post.  My specific questions are:

Invoice in Report Builder

1. In the image I have selected the parent rectangle.  The children are other rectangles and the data is with grandchildren textboxes that exist within those rectangles.  I clearly have a bit of right side white space in the main parent rectangle, but there is no sizing tool on a hover... just move tool.  And if I change the rectangle size in the prop form it just snaps back to the cell width.  How do I size the parent rectangle and keep if from expanding.

Here I am guessing that to actually reduce the horizontal width of tablix and then the report, I have to first decrease the parent width of the rectangles that occur in each row?

Ssis Package Hangs On Script Transformation When Running On One Machine Not Developing Machine

May 4, 2007

Help!
I am using Script Transformation to output a new column as image[DT_IMAGE]
field to store serialized object. In the VB script, the sample code as

Row.serializedobject.AddBlobData ( binaryArrayReturnedFromC#dll )

The package always runs fine on my developing machine and will halt on other
machine at AddBlobData after certain number row records were processed. I am
stuck here. Anyone has any suggestion?

What I need is reading data from mutiple tables in one database and writing
into a single table in another datable. In order preserve all the columns
data, I use input column fields to construct a new object and then serialize
it, and store the serialize data into detination db table. (The object and
serialization function is coming from c# dll.)

Dim b As BusinessLicense = New BusinessLicense()
b.ApprovalDate = Row.approvaldate
b.BusinessId = Row.busid
b.BusinessName = Row.busname
b.NaicsCode = Row.naicscode
b.NaicsDescription = Row.naicsdescr
b.OwnerName = Row.ownername
b.Phone = Row.phone
b.Pkey = Row.pkey
b.RenewalDate = Row.renewaldate
b.StartDate = Row.startdate
b.Suite = Row.suite

Row.serializedobject.AddBlobData(Serializer.Serialize(b)) '''----This is blocking line
Row.infoType = BusinessLicense.TYPE

Both machine is xp with sp2. and standard SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.1399.06

Thanks!

Connection Pool Leak In Production Machine (in Other Machine It Runs Well)

Nov 16, 2006

Hi to everyone,
I'm facing a problem that drives me crazy. I've a web application that has the following problem. When I test the application on my developement machine all runs fine, but when I put into production server there is a problem in connection pooling. Look at the following image, the blue line is the number of connection in the pool and the violet line is the number of connection reclaimed. From the image it is clear that connection are returned on the pool only in block, maybe when the garbage collection pass and reclaim the object. The strange thing is that on my developement machine all is good, and also I'm using Enterprise Library and the connection are managed internally.- Thanks to everyone for any help.

Migrating SQL 2005 Test Machine To New Machine

Jul 13, 2007

Hi Guys,

I was wondering if there was any white papers on the migration part from microsoft?
Apparently the situation is like this
Currently installed MOSS 2007 in a testing pc as application server. This application server will refer another testing database server which running SQL Server 2005.

Now, wanted to move this 2 temporary server into another 2 new servers.
Correct me if I'm wrong, it cannot be done by using image like Norton Ghost due to difference hardware spec.

So, if I install another fresh copy of MOSS2007 & SQL server 2005 in that 2 new servers, how can I migrate the contents, documents, etc from the testing database server?

It would be great if someone can show me the links to kb article. Thanks

Hardware Requirements?

Nov 24, 2004

Hey all,

I couldn't find an answer anywhere on the site, if there is one, could you please let me know where to go? Thanks.

Here goes. We receive large csv files, around a million records a month. What we need to do is:
- Of course, import these records
- Be able to run failry heavy reports on around 3 months worth of data (about 3 million records)
- Wanting to store at least a years worth of data

What I need to know:
- What server(s) spec (CPU, HDD, memory, etc) would we need to import and run reports quite fast. Don't want the reports/imports to take days to run. The reports will need to be run by about 3-5 people at the same time
- What OS and database type should I use (I was looking at Windows/Linux and MS SQL/MySQL)
- If we run these types of reports, can we use the same SQL server to run/store other applications (eg. CRM, etc) with no real impact on performance. There would be at least 20 people using the CRM database at the same time.

Thanks

SSIS Requirements

Jun 6, 2007

I have seen it mentioned that, unlike with the MSDE where DTS runtime was covered, the new SSIS is not covered by the SQL Server 2005 Express.

Does anybody know of an official microsoft web page detailing comprehensively what is required.

As far as I can gather the client will need a full version of SQL Server 2005, enabling the installation of the client tools, which as far as I can tell are required for the running of the SSIS.

This statement could be totally wrong but clear information seems hard to come by and seems mainly hearsay.
