May 21, 2006Use databases a bit, but new to SQL Server. We just want to change a column of existing SQL Server 2005 data from a string data type to one of the UNiCODE data types, such as DT_WSTR or DT.NTEXT (such as one can use for various data mining tasks, etc.). It seems to do this one needs to "the data conversion transformation editor". To use that one has to have a package and a project?
Does any one have a full script or set of steps to do the full set of steps for what should be a simple task? This would be a great example for BOL, but each atomistic bit of BOL refers to another, and one gets lost in the circle when a complete example is needed for fundamantal housekeeping tasks.

A SQL table has a field named "pay-day" with Char(8) data type.
I tried to change its data type to datetime but only with an error message like this. I did right-click the table and tried to modify a data type.

i have a database with 300 tables. All the data types of the fields of my tables are custom. Ex. IFGint:int and stuff like that.
I want to know how can i through a stored procedure, change in batch mode all the fields of my tables. I don't want to modify by hand everytable. It's a lot of work and i think that maybe there might be a way for this programatically.

I always instruct users to login as 'sa' and the relevantpassword when doing an update to my program, as sometimes I need to dodatabase changes for new stuff.Found that one of my users has not only logged in with their loginname (in this case Edward), but have also made this login a 'db owner'so that when I created 2 new user-defined data types they belong toEdward rather than dbo.This must have happened a long time ago, but now that they want tomove Edward round the roles and/or delete him from a copy of thedatabase that they have, they can't because he's the owner of theseuser-defined types.This brings me to the reason for my post, how can I change the ownerfrom Edward to dbo for these data types? Changing Language Settings

I was wondering how to change the language settings on SQL Server. The server is currently set to US English, and I was wondering how it is possible to change it to UK English. The Server Regional Settings are set to UK English.
Also, on a semi-related topic, does SQL Server store dates in a universal format, and then when data is requested does it 'translate' these dates into the format required by that particular regional setting?

Changing SQL Server Agent Settings On The Fly?

I have created a simple package that imports data from a flat file into a database. To run the package I'm using a SQL Server Agent Job. The location of the file is stored as a connection string in the Connection Managers tab in the SQL Server Agent Job.
Is there a way to change this connection string programmatically? If not programmatically, is there a way to change this setting right before I execute the package. I want to change the location of this file based on user input. Also, I'm executing the package using the sp_start_job stored procedure to run the job.

Changing Database Server Locale Date Time Settings ?

We currently have the following scenario:
4 app servers with regional date and time settings of locale A.
1 database server with locale settings B.
What is happening is that timestamps are being generated on the app servers, these are then in a sql command which fails on the database server since the timestamp format is invalid.
It was suggested that we change the regional locale settings of the database server, but will this not have serious implications , for example every current timestamp format in the datbase will become invalid?
In a nutshell is it safe to change a database servers regional date time locale settings ? Or are there serious implications?

Dec 14, 2005After testing out the application i write on the local pc. I deploy it to the webserver to test it out. I get this error.
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: The conversion of a char data type to a
datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range datetime value.
Notes: all pages that have this error either has a repeater or datagrid which load data when page loading.
At first I thought the problem is with the date, but then I can see
that some other pages that has datagrid ( that has a date field) work
just fine.

May 16, 2008I have a Type I SCD situation, ie, insert if new (by checking the business ID) and update if any attributes for a given business ID has changed.
The way I usually do this, (and I believe this is how most people do it), is I use a LOOKUP TASK to determine if the business ID exsist in the target table. If it doesn't then I insert. If the business ID exists, then I bring back the associated attributes and use a CONDITIONAL SPLIT TASK to compare if any of the incoming attributes are different. If there are changes, then update.
In doing this comparision, I often run into situations where I end up comparing a NULL value to something, which does not result in FALSE, but a NULL result. To get around this, I first check for NULLs and convert them into something valid before I do the comparision, but this results in a messy comparison expression, especially if I have to compare a lot of attributes.
So, how do you guys handle this?
As an alternative, I am looking into the SLOWLY CHANGING DIMENSION TASK, which I also have some questions on, but I would like to first address the above. Thank you.

The warehouse I am writing packages for has sort of a "Type 1.5" design for most of its DIMs that I am trying to get to work with the slowly changing dimension object.
Basically it should behave like a type 1 with updates in place BUT send the old prior rows/values to an "archive" server to hold the historical data. Unlike a Type 2 this data will not be used for any processes - but it needs to be kept for historical reseach and auditing.
Any ideas to easily do with the SCD wizard? I thought using the wizard as a type 1 and then after the wizard is done attaching the "Historical Attribute Inserts Output" to the archive db/table would do the trick but that output from the SCD object never has data. I could manually do it with a lookup and so forth but I thought I'd check in here first to see if I am just overlooking something with the SCD object.

I can populate a dataTable with type double (C#) of say '1055.01' however when I save these to the CE3.5 database using a float(CE3.5) I lose the decimal portion. The 'offending' code is:

This did not happen with VS2005/CE3.01.

Mar 7, 2007We have some columns in a table where the date is stored as 19980101 (YYYYMMDD). The data type for this column is NUMBER(8) in Oracle.
I need to copy rows from Oracle to SQL Server using SSIS. I used the Data Conversion transformation editor to change it to DT_DATE, but the rows are not being inserted to the destination.
On Error, If I fail the component, then the error is :
There was an error with input column "ORDER_DATE_CONV" (1191) on input "OLE DB Destination Input" (29). The column status returned was: "Conversion failed because the data value overflowed the specified type.".

ETL For Type 2 Slowly Changing Hierarchical Dimensions

I would like to know if there is an easy way to load Hierarchical Dimensions with Type 2 using SSIS ( or in general).
Here is my example:
There is a Hierarchy Product Group <- Product Class <- Product. (In words, Product rolls up to Product Class and Product Class Rolls up to Product Group). Say Product Group is Type 1 and the other two are Type 2. Every night, I receive a feed for each of these tables only if the record is new or a change to an existing record.
Now, when a Product Class Record is changed to assign it to a different group then I receive the feed only for Product Class (but not for Product). To load this record, I expire the old record and create a new entry with a new Surrogate Key. Then how do I automatically cascade this change to Product and make a Type 2 change to use the new Surrogate Key from Product Class?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I've tried to use cast in the following way, (rsbirthday is the field name, panelists is the table), but to no avail.

Bulk Insert Task Failing On Data Type Conversion For A Destination Column Of Type Bit
Jul 6, 2006I am trying to use the Bulk Insert Task to load from a csv file. My final column is a bit that is nullable. My file is an ID column that is int, a date column that is mm/dd/yyy, then 20 columns that are real, and a final column that is bit. I've tried various combinations of codepage and datafiletype on my task component. When I have RAW with Char, I get the error included below. If I change to RAW/Native or codepage 1252, I don't have an issue with the bit; however, errors start generating on the ID and date columns.
I have tried various data type settings on my flat file connection, too. I have tried DT_BOOL and the integer datatypes. Nothing seems to work.
I hope someone can help me work through this.

Restore Data But Maintain Replication Settings?
Jun 17, 2008We are setting up the clients' database with transactional replication that allows the subscriber to send updates by pull subscriptions.
The plan is to create a second database so the users can keep working on the original database while we get the replication set up and working. Once we feel confident that the replication is working on the second database, the plan was to backup the old one, then detach it, and then restore the new database with the latest data from the old one. My question is whether this would preserve all the replication configurations that we set up? Since the replication adds a column to each table what would happen to that column? Or what is an alternative, which would allow us to set up the replication without disturbing the user's work, and then implement the replication with the latest data?
I am also wondering how to set the synchronization to happen once daily? I do not see where I can set that. I only see options for continuous vs on demand. Does on demand mean I can somehow schedule with an external program to run once a day?

This code works fine on my local machine and local SQL server. However at the client side this code results in the error as mentioned in the subject of this thread. I first used 'datetime.now' instead of 'getdate()', but that caused the same error. Then I changed the code to 'getdate()', but the error still remains.
The server at the client is running Windows Server 2000 UK . My local machiine is running WIndows XP Dutch.
Maybe the conversion from Dutch to UK has something to do with it. But this should be solved by using the 'Getdate()' function..... ?
