I have to retrieve a cross join between languages and language-skills for more person in a matrix (grid) report.
E.g. i like to ritrieve the TOP 2 people in each "cell" of the grid (order by name). There are 3 people in cell "ITALIAN / very good". So i have to retrieve only the top 2.
In table tEmployee i have the people names (john, anna, michael) In table tLanguage i have all language (english, italian, german) And in table tLanSkill i have the language rating (bad, good, very good)
I am trying to write a query that will retrieve all students of a particular class and also any rows in HomeworkLogLine if they exist (but return null if there is no row). I thought this should be a relatively simple LEFT join but I've tried every possible combination of joins but it's not working.

Is there any way how to create indexies after insertion of any number of records (I dont want to create index after insertion of every record, but for example after insertion of 1000 records) ?

I used a data flow task, and when trying to transfer data from a OLE DB Source (records ~ 75 lac) to a destination OLE DB Source, SSIS fails at the middle giving an error saying the Transaction log got filled, try again after clearing the same.

Hello all - I currently have a project that has a gridview on the front end. The user can select multiple items from this grid, hit a button and all of the selected records should be updated in the process. However, this resultset can have a large amount of data coming back, and I'm stumped on how to pass all of the ID's to the sp. I'd rather not call the SP for each record selected, as there could be 1,000 items selected, and well, I'd rather not call the SP 1000 times :p. I thought of generating a comma delimited list as I'm looping through the grid and using dynamic sql, but the IDs are about 6-7 numbers long, and including comma, would take up almost all of the max space in a varchar. Are there any good solutions to this problem? Passing the items as an array? Generating a data table in .NET and passing that? Any help would be appreciated. -Jaime
writing the query for the following, I need to collapse the continuity. If the termdate for an ID is one day less than the effdate of the next id (for the same ID) i need to collapse the records. See below example .....how should i write the query which will give me the desired output. i.e., get min(effdate) and max(termdate) if termdate is one day less than the effdate of next record.

In one of our forth coming projects, with ASP.Net/C#/MSSQL Server, We have to deal with a Business table having about 15 millions of records. We want to know, that which methodologies should we adopt, both regarding front end and back end perspective, so the site could give optimised performance. Also in place of a Dedicated Server, the Hosting Company provides MSDE (that come with .net). Will this create any problem with this project, that have such a huge table? Should we go for some advanced database technique, such as, Clustering, Spliting Tables, etc.

I am wanting to make a query to find out if there are any columns in a table that are null for all records.
So far I am using a cursor that holds all the column names of that table and then a stored procedure that would use a loop to cycle through all the column names in a query to essentially count the number of nulls for each column and then an If statement to check to see if the #of nulls = to the number of records.
What isn't working is my query to count the number of nulls...Here is my query
select count(*) from XYZ where @cName is null
Ive tried declaring cName as a sysname, and varchar, neither work.
Also, I've tried using COL_NAME(OBJECT_ID('XYZ'), someColumnIndx)...I think this would be the better choice just because I wouldn't need to use a cursor, but both aren't working. I am a bit new to MSSQL and don't know my way around the system tables. Is there a sys table that would give me this info so I wouldn't need to perform a query?
I'm currently running the following statement that is used in a CrystalReport. Basically, a record is returned when the T_PAYMENT.amounthas a record in the database based on the value of the T_MULTILIST.codefield. In Access I have a macro that, each night, takes a table with aprimary key defined in it, and deletes all the rows. Then itimports/appends records from a fixed width text file. In this way,since the table is not deleted and recreated, the primary key is keptintact.What would be the equivalent SQL method for doing this in an automatedway? I've tried letting DTS import the table from Access, but theprimary key is lost. I am using ADODB.Recordset to retrieve the records from an MS Access database. The table has 11450 records and the recordset shows this number as the recordcount too. But when I try to fetch the records in a While loop using EOF as the check, I am able fetch only 4000 or so records. No error occurs and no exception is thrown. Control just comes out of the function. Why could this be happening? Does Recordset have some limit on the number of records for Jet 4.0 provider?

I want to show the topmost 10 records. For some criteria I get the results in the chart.
But for some criteria or say for wrong criteria, there are no records. In such a case the X-axis contains all values for {[DIM].[NAME].[NAME] and value for the Y-axis is all 0. Its kind of blank report it will restrict to 10 records.
In such a scenario I want to show a message to the user saying "No records found", which I have set in the No Rows property of the chart.
If I remove the TopCount clause then I get the above message, which is obvious.
So how do I acheive the same message but at the same time limiting the records to 10?
How can I acheive this in my scenario? Can something be done at the query end?

I have information on clothes in a table that I want to select out to a result set in a different structure - I suspect that this will include some kind of pivot (or cross-join?) but as I've never done this before I'd appreciate any kind of help possible.

I'm only have permition to query table data and with local sql server installed. Also, capable link server from local machine to live sql server (Blue). Getting error type when ran a query that commons: Column name or number of supplied values does not match table definition. Others, ambiguous column name " ". I have a report which is grouped by a field called R_ID, which gives me a list of records for each R_ID. So here is the thing, I want to get only top 3 records for each R_ID. Hi all I am having some issues in selecting items from my database where the record is NOT NULL. I have the code below however although some fields do contain soem data in it, others are blank which I believe are empty spaces. How do I do a SELECT command which ignores empty spaces and NULLS?

Now I'm not sure why the record with ID 2 is coming using CROSS APPLY, shouldn't it be avoided in case of CROSS APPLY and only displayed when using OUTER APPLY.
One thing that I noticed was that if you remove the Aggregate function MAX then the record with ID 2 is not shown in the output. I'm running this query on SQL Server 2012.
