Hanging Or Lockup Issue With SQL Server And Terminal Services 2000 On NT 4 Domain Server

Jul 20, 2005

Hi all,

Have a situation that my company has never run across before. Client
is running NT4 for the domain server, using terminal services 2000 and
running an application with a SQL Server backend and they are
experiencing locking problems. Once one person gets locked out then
everyone trying to access that tables is also locked out as a result.
It is not specific to a certain User, or module within the
application. It's not a specific time of the day (like when a backup
would be running) and sometimes it's in the middle of the night when
there are actually less Users on the system.

We have 500 customers using this application. Most are using SQL
Server backend, alot of the newer customers are using Terminal
Services, and the number of Users is not accessive as compared to our
other customers. THe only difference is that I do not specifically
know of another client with an NT4 Domain server in the mix.

We actually switched to SQL Server as the recommended back end due to
locking issues using SQLBase because SQL Server is row locking and
SQLBase is page locking. Since making this change we have stopped
seeing the locking for years until now. Is this a SQLServer issue or
issue with the NT Domain server?

Anyone have any ideas???

Thanks
A

SQL 2000/Terminal Services Compatability

Oct 11, 2001

I need to know if Microsoft supports SQL Server 2000 running on the same server that functions as a Terminal Server (both NT and Windows 2000).

I checked out Microsoft.com and found that SQL Server 7 is supported with NT Terminal Services but can't locate any compatability information SQL 2000.

PS: I know this configuration doesn't make sense from a performance perspective but my customers will want to do this anyway.

Thanks!

SQL Server And Terminal Services Application Mode

Aug 11, 2006

Hello!

I am specifically looking for a KB article, best practice, white paper etc, that states it is not recommended that SQL Server (either 2000 or 2005) is installed on a WIndows 2003 Server that is also running Terminal Services in application mode.

Is there such a document or reference?

Thanks,

How Does One "lockup" A SQL Server Accidentally?

Nov 11, 1998

Someone stumped me with a question the other day. And I was wanting to know if my answer was accurate.

They were worried about locking up SQLServer with too many queries when accessing it through a web page.

I haven't actually had this problem with any of the stuff I have done. And I never had it happen way back when I was just doing database stuff either.

I suppose this happens when a query is run that the stored procedure conflict and end up getting locked up because neither query can finish their process until the other lets the tables go. So one way to avoid this is to make sure dangerous queries are never done through the web interface. Right can do but
and the other thing I was wondering about it how they balance queries on the server. I know about testing the equipment to find out which queries work the best and how to create a good normalized database you know good structure etc. (is this why I never had this problem or is it more because I did have a ton of different people accessing the data all at once -- but if they are accessing it in a controlled fashion then whats the worry right?)

Since I don't know how to cause this exactly-- I don't know how to prevent it.

Any clues?

SQL EXPRESS Reporting Server (Access Denied - Windows 2000 Server Domain Controller)

Apr 4, 2007

Subject problem has me quite vexed.

I am receiving the following error when attempting to access reporting services... to sum things up real nice and tidy-

I get three login prompts - then the access denied response. It is almost as if it is unable to authenticate the user... anyway... here's the actual error response, I'd really appreciate any input/insight/resolution.

Sql Server Lockup After Strange Error In Log, Help Please.

May 31, 2006

Can anyone help me solve why my server is locking up.

We're running sql server 2005 ent on a 2 cpu dual core server. With 3gig. Once each the last couple weeks, the machine has hung and the only thing I can find that's suspicious is on the sql server log.  It's below.  After the excerpt is about 50 more different memory errors.  As far as I know there's no ssl configured for log in, it mostly uses private lan cards for security between it and the web/application server.

Sql Server 2005 Machine Lockup/freeze Up

Mar 25, 2008

Our HP Proliant ML 330 G5 (3.0 Duo Core Xeon, 4 GBs RAM) server is running Windows 2003 R2 Standard 32 bit ( Win SP2) and SQL Server 2005 Standard (SQL SP2 €“ version 9.00.3054.00(Intel X86)). At random times every 1-14 days, our server will lock up. While the Windows Login screen or the standard Windows screen saver is viewable on the server still, the computer becomes completely non-responsive. The keyboard and mouse do not work and we can no longer connect to the server via a Terminal Service connection. We are able to ping the server while it is locked up though. The only way to get the server back up and running is by doing a hard power down and then power it back up.

Upon getting the server back up and running, everything goes back to working as normal with both Windows and SQL. There is nothing in any of the event logs indicating any type of issue prior to the server locking up. We are really at a loss on where to start troubleshooting this. We have no reason to think it is a hardware issue at this point but are not ruling that out.
Any ideas what we can do to start tracking down the cause of this problem?

Changing Domain Name --Risks To SQL Server 2000

Dec 26, 2007

Greetings,

I have been tasked with changing our local domian name from .com to .local. I want to make sure I understand the risks to SQL server 2000 when i make this change. We use SQL for Great Plains version 8, here is my simple plan:

1. Dis-join all workstations from .com domain
2. Make a full backup of all databases iin SQL server 2000 -- all databases use the SA account and not NT authentication
3. Dis-join SQL server
4. Change domain name
5. Re-join SQL server box and workstations
6. Launch Great Plains and go home happy!

I am having trouble identifying the risk to my plan and am wondering if:

1. SQL will launch under the new domain
2. Will the backup I made restore under the new domian
3. Will I experience authentication problems even though we use the SA account?

I am not a DB admin and am feeling a little unsure about this task any help on the risks or links to "how to" guides would be appreciated.

I have been asked to move a system running MS SQL 2000 Server from a workgroup to a domain. The SQL server is running in SQL Authentication and the services are running as local system.

Will SQL Server break after the move?

Any advice will help. I thought I remember this being the case, but possibly only with Windows Authentication.

Domain User Privilege For Connecting SQL Server 2000

Mar 30, 2006

Hi,

My server administrator has created a few users as domain user privilege for connecting SQL server from my application. However it faild to connect, and

with Domain Admin privilege, my app is running ok.

I asked admin person to upgrade domain user privilege to connect SQL server,

but he couldn't do this for security reason, and told it should work with domain user.

Is it true for domain user to connect SQL server without any problem?

Do I need to add the user, domain user, into Logins of Security inside SQL server Enterprise Manager?

Or inside users of my database section of SQL server EManager?

Thanks,

dixon

Can I Install SQL Server Reporting Services On A Domain Controller

Feb 18, 2004

I've just got RS Enterprise Edition.
Installed it in a Test Server, ok.
Installed it in a DEV server, having some errors.

My DEV server is an "ALL in 1" server, which is also a Domian Controller.
While Test Server is not a DC.

The installation was succesful but when I open RS Manager thru the web, it gives me a ASP.NET error:

Access to the path "D:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLReporting ServicesReportManagerin" is denied.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

If the application is impersonating via <identity impersonate="true"/>, the identity will be the anonymous user (typically IUSR_MACHINENAME) or the authenticated request user.

To grant ASP.NET write access to a file, right-click the file in Explorer, choose "Properties" and select the Security tab. Click "Add" to add the appropriate user or group. Highlight the ASP.NET account, and check the boxes for the desired access.

I tried doing everything I can possible think of from the error message advice, including adding rights to ASPNET user from ISS to that particular folder...no success.

What I'm suspecting is I can't install RS in a DC box. But I can't find this info anyway in the web.

Anyone can point me to the correct direction or any advice?

ReportViewer Not Printing Under Terminal Services

Aug 16, 2007

I have written an application with VB.Net. It display a report written using Reporting Rervices (rdl) in the ReportViewer Contol. When I run the application locally under windows, I can print the report just fine. When I run it under Terminal Services, sometimes it takes 2 or 3 times to print. Sometimes it never does. It looks like it prints the pages because the popup displays and it shows it is printing but it never does.

If I bring up the queue for the printer to watch when I print, then click the Print button on the the ReportView contol, I see the print enter the queue on the printer and then it is deleted but nothing prints. If I do it all again, the same thing happens but it may or may not print.

The applicatoin is written in VB.Net under Visual Studio Professional SP1.

Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated!!

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: DNS Name Not Match Active Directory Domain Name For Reporting Services

Feb 11, 2015

I am running into a weird issue with a new SQL Reporting Services 2014 server I built. I installed SQL Reporting 2014 on Windows Server 2012 R2 and configured Kerberos, but the site is extremely slow. After some reconfiguration and log captures I have determined the issue has to do with the Kerberos setup, however I am running a similar configuration with SQL Reporting Services 2008 on Windows Server 2008 R2 and do not run into the same errors.

The error I see while using Wireshark is KRB Error: KRB5KDC_ERR_BADOPTION NT Status: STATUS_NO_MATCH. When I drill down the into the error I can see the kerberos string is testprjmnmtreports14.company.com, which is the URL we are using to access the site. I made sure to add that name as an SPN for the service account that is running SQL Reporting Services, however I still receive the error.

Then I tried configuring the site to run without a hostheader, so I accessed the site with the server name, ECTSTSQLRS5, and the site works perfectly fine, no errors are reported either. So it seems I have isolated the issue down to Kerberos but I am not sure how to resolve it. Here is some more information about my environment:

DNS/URL used: testprjmnmtreports14.company.com
Server Name (FQDN): ECTSTSQLRS5.company.int
AD Domain Name: company.int
Server Version: Windows Server 2012 R2
AD Functional Level: 2008 R2

As you can see I am trying to use a .com address but my AD domain is .int which I think is the issue, but I do not have the same problem on my other server that is running Windows Server 2008 R2. What do I need to do to allow my new site on 2012 R2 to work with this DNS Alias?

User On Trusted Domain Does Have Permission To Access Linked Server On AD Deployed In Another Domain

Sep 28, 2007

Hi,
We have the followoing:

-A "master domain" AD, a "sub domain" AD, a trust relationship between the two (sub trust master)
-A sql server 2005 on a win server 2003 in "sub domain" AD
-A linked server to "sub domain" AD
-A linked server login using a "sub domain" admin acccount
-A view to this linked server
-A grant on masterDomain/Domain Users to the database
-A grant on subDomain/Domain Users to the database
-We want all connections done through "Windows Authentication" not "Database Authentication".

Queries on the view work fine using "sub domain" user accounts.
Queries on the view fail using "master domain" user accounts (including master domain admin accounts)

"Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

The OLE DB provider "ADsDSOObject" for linked server "ADSI" reported an error. The provider indicates that the user did not have the permission to perform the operation."

All connections are done through "Windows Authentication" not "Database Authentication".

Can we establish cross domain connectivity with "Windows Authentication" ?

Below are details of the implementation:

SELECT TOP (100) PERCENT *
FROM OPENQUERY(ADSI,
'SELECT displayname, givenName, sn, cn (etc...)

WHERE objectCategory = ''Person'' AND objectClass = ''user'' ')

EXEC sp_addlinkedsrvlogin @rmtsrvname ='ADSI', @useself='false',
@rmtuser='subDomainAdminAccnt', @rmtpassword='sunDomainAdminAccntPassword';

In SQL Server Mngt Studio in Server Objects/Linked Servers/Providers/ ADSI properties security tab I have:

"connections will: <be made using this security context> Remote login:'subDomainAdminAccnt' With password: 'subDomainAdminAccntPassword'

Error:
Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

How Do I Configure SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services To Deliver Subscription E-mails To Addresses External To My Windows Domain

Jun 10, 2007

Can anyone help me with a problem I have with SSRS 2005? How do I configure SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services to deliver subscription e-mails to addresses external to my windows domain?

I've been having trouble configuring the Report Server e-mail delivery component to send subscription e-mails to addresses outside the domain on which the report server is hosted.

For e.g. since my local windows domain is named "smartsystems.com", I have found that the Report Manager does not have any problems sending subscription mails to "eawagu@smartsystems.com" but throws up an error whenever I include "eawagu@yahoo.com" in the recipients' list.

Hanging SQL Server

Mar 7, 2000

I have a problem with a process hanging my SQL server machine and the only thing that can fix it is to reboot the machine.
The environment is SQL Server 7, NT sp5, dual processor 500MHZ, 1 gig Ram.
The applications are run through MTS written in VB all executing stored procedures.
The symptoms are that the process hangs with an open transaction and it can be seen through DBCC OPENTRAN. It can also be seen in MTS on the Transaction List screen and shows as Aborting. It seems to get stuck in that state.
The Kill command does not work on the process either. I have tried one fixs that I thought may be causing the error by setting the Max Degree of Paralelism in sp_configure to 1 but that does not fix the problem.

Has anyone seen this and/or have any ideas on how to fix/repair the problem.

Thanks

I don't think that simply increasing the number of user connections will help, but if anyone can throw some light on the cause of the first message I would be grateful.

Thanks,
John

SQL Server Hanging

Sep 26, 2005

Hi,Periodically I run some very complex queries or stored procedures that"hang", and the bigger problem is that it locks up all of the databaseclients ie 50 users connecting to the db via a windows application.I never know when this is going to happen, but when it does it leavesall the users completely hung up.1. Can I avoid this?2. Is there a way to "clear" what I was doing so that I don't have torestart the SQL Server serive?thanks,

Feb 25, 2008

I'm trying to install SQL Server 2005 on a server 2000 machine, everything is working with the exception of the Web Service Identity. It is putting machinenameASPNET, and I don't know where to go to make it use something else. I've look around but I have really seen any answers that have worked for me.

Thanks in advance

Urgent: Server Keeps Hanging

Apr 4, 2001

I'm running 7.0 sp2,windows 2000, 1gig of ram, and a 933mhz cpu. Server has been very stable with no problems until I moved a 2gig table into the database. Query performance is excellent even table scans take less than 2 minutes. The problem is that once a table scan is performed on the table (I can't index for every possible query) the query finishes but the enterprise manager freezes on the server and users can no longer connect. I've set SQL server to have only 650 MB of ram and the rest is free, problem also existed when the memory was controlled entirely by SQL server.

My cache Hit Ratio was 97% and Cache flushes 0.0 (unfortunately these can't be checked when the problem exist because the box is frozen). I may have a concurrency issue but I'm not sure how to be positive. I don't want to just throw memory at the problem because I'm not sure the problem will be fixed.

Thanks for any help, Dave

SQL Server 7 Hanging Windows NT

Jul 10, 2001

I was wondering if anyone could provide me with some help, to do with a problem we are experiencing with SQL Server 7 and Windows NT 4.

We have a database that we have imported data into and are trying to build some indexes on one of the tables. THe database size is about 4GB and the table contains 21,000,000 records. When we try to build the indexes SQL server starts off OK, but after about five minutes all drive activity stops, the server stops responsing, and we need to reboot.

The machine has 2 P3 800 processers and 768Mb of RAM. NT is running on SP6 and SQL Server is running on SP3. We were initially running with 512 MB of RAM, but increased it because we thought the memory was a problem. The Server is not a dedicated SQL Server.

I have used performance monitor when running the query in SQL Analyser and have noted the following counters:

Total Server Memory

This starts off about 208000KB and creeps up to about 625000KB just before the server hangs.

Free Memory Available

This starts off high and is about 6MB just before the server hangs.

Page Reads Sec

Normally 370 and 410

Page Writes Sec

157

Buffer Cache hit Ratio

99.1

I have tried setting the SQL Server max memory option to about 600 MB, and also let SQL Server dynamically allocate it.
