Help, Unable To Add Sql Database To Website (Scott's Todo List Video).

New to AJAX and ASP .Net. I am trying to follow along with Scott's Todo List video. When I try to add a sql database by right-clicking on App_Data and selecting add new item and then sql database, I get the following message 'Connections to SQL Server Files (*.mdf) require SQL Server Express 2005 to function properly. Please verify the installatio of the component or download from the URL: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=49251' . I have installed Sql Server Express but still get the message. I would appreciate it if anyone can help me with this issue, thanks.

Hi. We are using SQL Server 2005 64-bit on Windows Server 2003 R2 x64Enterprise Edition. I have a really weird problem where I have peopleout there who are placed in the db_owner, db_accessadmin, anddb_securityadmin roles in their database, and yet they are unable toadd new users to their databases, despite the fact that logins existfor these users on the server. The reason is that when attempting toadd a new user in Management Studio, upon using the "Browse" option tolook at the logins, the complete list is not presented to them. Infact, they only see a couple of logins or so (the server has hundredsof logins). Also, if they try to type in the login name directly,they get a "permission denied" error message. Since they cannot addusers to their databases, they have to call me and have me do it forthem.I created a test, non-privileged, SQL-authenticated login to testthings for my own sake, and when logged in under the test account, Isaw the same behavior. I had db_owner role for a single testdatabase, and when I went to add users, the only server logins thatwere displayed were my own (the test login in this case) and that ofsa. Further, when I queried the master.sys.syslogins view, I saw thesame thing, it only came back with the rows for myself and sa.It appears that this is clearly a security problem, but I'm not sureat what level to look. We never had this problem with SQL Server 2000or earlier. Does anyone have any idea what I can do to allow mydb_owners to see all the server logins, and therefore be able to addusers to their databases as they see fit? I really do NOT want toassign them to server-level security roles, for obvious reasons.Thanks,SkyGringo
I recently started using SQL 2000 Analysis Manager. I wanted to try data mining but was unable to get the Mining Model Wizard to load available techniques.
When I select a cube and "New Mining Model" I get the following error:

I am a developer using an ODBC toolkit to connect to my companies metadata management product, which in turn communicates to SQL Server, Oracle, DB2 and other databases. The ODBC toolkit we are using is very old, and has been very stable in accessing data with clients such as Access, Excel, Visio and others. It is a read-only ODBC driver that does not support a lot of advanced query and data manipulation features, such as catalog.
I'm using Visual Studio 2005 to debug the ODBC calls that Excel is making when attempting to load data through the External Data Wizard. The Excel version I am using is 2003. The method that I am using to attempt to load data is with 'Data | Import External Data | Import Data'. When that dialog appears, I select 'New Source...' then 'ODBC DSN'. I then select my DSN and click Next.
At this point, I get back the error 'unable to obtain a list of tables from the datasource'.
What is frustrating is, if I do 'Data | New Database Query' and use MSQuery to load the data, everything works fine.
As I mentioned I am using VC2005 and debugging, I believe the problem has to do with the capabilities of our driver and the columns that Excel is binding to return data. In this call, Excel is binding two columns - Table Qualifer (
TABLE_QUALIFIER (1)) and Remarks (TABLE_REMARKS(5)). Our driver does not support qualifiers, so we return a NULL for that value:

cbValueIn = SQL_NULL_DATA;
Excel makes the SQLTables() call, which successfully returns the entire list of tables from our server product. It then attempts to SQLBind the two columns I mentioned above. The first call to SQLFetch returns with SQL_SUCCESS but the ODBCGetData call fills the QUALFIER column with a NULL. So obviously, Excel doesn't like this value and then ends up quiting and displaying the message above (I think....) This is confirmed by looking at the ODBC trace calls:
So I began to examine the GetInfo calls. There are probably 100 or so that Excel makes. Anything related to qualifiers or cataloging seems to indicate (according to MSDN) that we do not support it. So my thinking was, if Excel properly identifies that we don't support qualifers, why does it attempt to bind the column? Is this a flaw in Excel, or are there some other GetInfo properties that I am not properly setting?
The attributes I am setting (that seem related) are:
Looking at ODBC trace logs, the only GetInfo values that Excel is quering is SQL_QUALIFIER_LOCATION, SQL_QUALIFIER_TERM and SQL_QUALIFIER_USAGE. According to the MSDN documentation, an application is supposed to query SQL_CATALOG_NAME to determine if catalogs are supported. I know it is not, because I don't see it in the ODBC trace log, or my breakpoints in VC2005 are never hit.
I realize this is a HUGE question. I hope that I came across clear and that my question is understandable. I guess what it comes down to is - (maybe some Excel engineers can answer this one) - is this method of loading data into Excel require a Table Qualifier? If not, how can I configure my settings so that it asks for Table Name (as MsQuery does) instead?

I almost finish my website and ready to upload it to internet. However, I have a thought of how the database will work.
Here's the scenario. My website is a data-driven dynamic website with SQL as the database manager. I have 3 database files.
After I finish with everything, I will have to deploy the application to the webserver right? Now, let say I deploy / upload it to a hosting company. Then, people start using my website, all traffic coming in, and database are getting larger and larger. Then, let say I decide to make some changes to my website. I change the website here and there. However, I haven't uploaded / deployed it to the hosting server yet. I just make the changes in my computer. I test the application and changes that I make, everything works fine.
My question is: If I deploy / upload my website to the SAME hosting company after I make some changes, what will happen to the database in the hosting server? My website has been used my many users and database is getting larger. If I deploy ./ upload the website that I have made changes, will it overwrite the database in the hosting server? Or how does this work?
Anybody has any idea or maybe has already done it?
My database contains over 50 tables of information - some tables are quite large. Rather than upload the entire database (which I imagine could potentially lock out many users from browsing the website), I would like to upload changes to individual tables. My local database contains the most recent table information. What would be the best way to upload individual tables that would only lock one row at a time while the updates were taking place? A DTS package?
it must be simple, but not for me! there's a folder called db in the ftp part of the server and the admin told me to upload my database there,i don't know how to transfer my database in that folder.can you help me?
HiI'm using sqlexpress on development machine and on client server. I'm building a webapp using membership and role provided for asp. In web.config I have definet membership provider and role provider to point to my database.After web site deployment I get allways message : Failed to update database "c:appapp.MDF" because the database is read-only, and I'm forced to apply rights for ASPNET. More than that somethimes I must re-register users.I have tried to modify in web.config with <remove name="LocalSqlServer"/> <add name="LocalSqlServer"...> but I get errors if I try to design my dataset file:"Cannot get web application service".TIAPaul
Hello everybody, I intend to used SQL Express database in my website so that I don't have to go through all the database deployment effort when deplying my website. In this regard, can anyone please tell me what features would it require in my hosting package so that my application works fine (in database context). Would I have to purchase any additional features (like the way we purchase SQL Server database(s) in hosting package) for SQL EXpress in order to deploy my application?? HiI’m abut developing a website that has a 200 megabytes SQL database ,in my estimation the maximum online users are 100 users for first year , I want to make shore a SQL express 2005 database in good enough for my purpose. Another question is how much can I count on a SQL express 2005 database? I mean how much it could be grown and abut security (I mean is it as secure as SQL server?). Thanks.
I don't know whether this question belong here, but.... In the past I had many customers using the same website each with their own domain name and their own database. To accomplish that, I used MS Access and placed each customers database in separate directories. I steered the customer to the correct directory using their domain name. I am now trying to accomplish the same thing using aspnetdb.mdf and other .mdf database files. I am using the aspnetdb.mdf database for membership, etc. I want the aspnetdb.mdf database file to be unique for each customer. Does anyone know how to accomplish what I was doing with MS Access using aspnetdb.mdf? Is there any way to have multiple web.config files each of which would be dedicated to a particular customer?

I am in the process of designing a web application for our application that will be available to the general public.Basically will be used to collect information for a case report. I need to know if there is a way from our internal database driven application to push certain data up to the website that the database may be behind a firewall so I cannot make a direct connection to the external database. I thought I heard about some sort of data sharing protocol. I then will be storing the users entered data in the website database and pulling it from the internal application. So basically I need a secure way of sending and receiving data between a server/client app on a LAN system to the Web site database that could be hosted outside the LAN. I hope this made sense.

Since VWD Express doesn't support Publish Website, I used 'Copy Website' to deploy my local site to the hosting server. The static page works fine, but when it gets to accessing database, I kept getting the following error: An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file I:DataWebdnh.sklingling_15726c71-b2bf-479f-bcc3-b7ae43318f3cwwwApp_DataPersonal.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share. Anyone has the same experience? How to resolve this? Thanks,
I create a WebSite onto the internet. Then I created a database with MSSQLmanager provided by the WebHosting. I created a Table and put some data in it. When I try to access the DataBase an Error says: "Connection cannot be opened. On default settings you cannot access a Database Remotely." What shall I do to configure my Database. basically I don't know where to go to change configuration of my Database. In my intranet I would use SQLServerSuraceArea. But on Internet I do not know. someone Help. Did I miss something ?
I'm working on a ASP.NET project. The applications has 4-layers. When I look in the Data Access Layer and test the typed dataset, then the "Preview Data" works fine. I see the right records from SQL Server 2005.
But when I run the app (default.aspx) in debug-mode, then the system gives the following error:
"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)"
I'm using Visual Studio 2005 (8.0.50727.42) and going into the menu option Website > ASP.Net Configuration, access the security tab and all I get is an error message stating that there is a problem with the selected data store "Unable to Connect to the SQL Server Database"
I have SQL Server 2005 (Express Edition). I have created a database "NetDev" with the right connection, etc.
I can use the SQL server fine for my Windows applications, but somehow this ASp.Net Configuration tool is not making any sense.
I also used the aspnet_regsql command from framework 2.0 to create a DataBase to no avail.
Does anyone out there knows if there is a bug with this tool???
Hi all, I am stuck with a problem using ASP.Net website. I created a website which accesses a database table in SQL Server 2005. The default.aspx is a form which inserts/updates/deletes data from the database. After creating the website I published it to IIS (Inetpub -> wwwroot). When I use Visual Studio 2005 and build the website and start with debugging. the form comes up and i can insert/update or delete the data from the table as I want. Now, as I have the website published I can access the form from another sharepoint website using the url as /Employee_Data/Default.aspx">http://<mydesktop>/Employee_Data/Default.aspx the form shows up but I am not able to access any of the database. I do not see any errors either. Once I click on the button the page just refreshes but nothing else happens. I have my web.config as :- <?xml version="1.0"?> <configuration> <appSettings/> <connectionStrings/> <system.web> <compilation debug="true"/> <authentication mode="Windows"/> </system.web> </configuration>
Am I missing something? I even have Anonymous access in the IIS inetpub properties. I can even the database as I am the administrator..... I appreciate your suggestions.
Hi, I am using express database and tools. I have an aspnetdb express database because I am using the login controls, personalisation...Can I use this database for my private tables also? Or do I need a separate express database for my private tables? Will using aspnetdb database, which contains special asp.net tables, for my private website tables create any kinds of problems in using my website? Hello.. I want to upgrade my website to asp.net 2.0 and I want to add a Daily news to website.and 10 to 15 news will be added daily , so after a year we have almost 4000 entry in the database. For designing this DB what is your advice on how to store news in database?Is it better to create same tables for each year ? for exampletblNews_2005tblNews_2006 Or just to make one table and have all news stored in that ? its gonna be huge after years , isnt that make any problems? Hi everybody, Currently we have a MIS application, developed in VB 6.0 - SQL Server 2000 platform, which is used by around 60 users in our office. We are planning to host a website remotely, which would allow clients to place orders, track order status etc. on it. Would it be possible to access our local SQL database from the remote website?
