Help Using Multiple Dimension Mdx Query

Hi
I am new to Analysis services. and I have figure out the following things:
I have a cube with multiple dimensions. I want to display all the options in cube along with the count of the rows for that combination. I am unable to understand how to count the dimensions and apply to column.
For example, I have say dim1, dim2, dim3 dim4, name as dimensions and cnt as count of the rows. Now I want to write an mdx expression that returns me dim1, dim2, dim3, dim4 with count(name fields) for above combination so the output will be as follows:
name field1 name field2
dim1 dim2 dim3 dim4 200 100
how do I do it?
Also how do we accept input parameters for mdx expression. for example in the above thing, if I have to accept an input for dim1 and display the output values for dim1 how do I do it?

A very basic MDX question. Using the following from AdventureWorks as an example:

How would I re-write the [Measures].[Big Cities] calculated member so it included both [Geography].[City].&[New York]&[NY] and [Geography].[City].&[Los Angeles]&[CA]? Assuming there is no logical connection between these members, and that they are non-contiguous. Also, in my real example, I cannot move [Measures].[Internet Order Count] to the WHERE clause, it must remain within the calculated member.

When i add a dimension to the cube dimension without any relation in my dimension usage to any measure group my units are going down.However when i remove the dimension from the cube am getting the correct values.

Hi all,
Apologies if this has been raised in the past, but 6 hours of web searching today hasn't turned up anything!
I'd like to use the Slowly Changing Dimension (SCD) Wizard to keep track of tables in my relational database. This means 200+ tables. I don't want to step through the UI Wizard for each table. Ideally I'd like to be able to create the SCD transformation in code, but I can find no good examples for doing this. The MSDN examples here are too brief and don't allow me to expand out to the level I need.
As in any database, columns come and (very rarely, go), and having a programmatic solution to this would mean that I could be flexible and cope with these situations.
So, my question is: Has anyone implemented SCD functionality in code, or have any code examples that do this, that I might learn from. Or, any tips/pointers if I'm barking up totally the wrong tree.

This provides a good example for my situation. In this example, you will see a Movie dimension with four attributes; Genre, Language, Movie, and Theme. I have a similar setup except mine is Top Level Hierarchy>Categories>Values which are all under the one hierarchy.
My Question: I have the dimension setup as a multi-value parameter in one of my reports. When I filter on a value in Genre and in Language, it provides all values from that genre and all values from that language. I really only want the values that include both.
Genre - Western: Movie1, Movie2, Movie3
Language - English: Movie2, Movie4, Movie5
If I filter on Western and English, I get Movie1-5 when all I really want is Movie2 only. Is there any way to have this do an Intersect within the same dimension or do I have to build each one out into its own dimension?

I am modelling cube in SSAS. Cube has around 20 dimensions and 6 fact tables. Some of the dimensions are common among the fact tables. e.g. Time dimension. Fact_PNL has 3 date columns for those we have 3 role playing dimensions in the dimension usages.
Another fact table has 5 date columns for them as well we have separate role playing dimensions in dimension usage tab. We have a common dimension Company which is foreign key in all fact tables. We might need to combine the data from multiple facts to get final output.
Should i create 6 role playing dimension for each of the fact table or use the same dimension for all fact tables?
Role playing dimensions should be created when we have multiple columns pointing to the same dimension ?

I've read all about how dimensions can have only one default member, but I need to set more than 1.

I am developing a BI solution on SQL Server 2008 R2 and how to handle multiple referances to the same dimension from a fact table!
Here is the scenario;
Fact_Contracts (# M)
ServiceProvider_CompanyID, Client_CompanyID, Amount_USD
Dim_Company( hundreds)
ID, CityID, ProfessionID, CompanyName
Dim_City
ID, CityName
Dim_Profession
ID, ProfessionName
As u can see there is two company references in my fact table, and the schema is in snowflake. My customer requirements state that the Contracts' amounts can be aggregated/filtered for/by, ServiceProviderCompany, its city/profession or ClientCompay, its city/profession.
First thing came in to my mind is to dublicate whole dimension structure (one for serviceproviders, one for clients), which i thought that there should be another way around?

How @StartDate and @EndDate parameters must added to the MDX query for usage in SSRS data set. strtomember can be used like

Good afternoon all,
I have created a cube in Analysis Services with a time dimension named Time. The data is only needed at the month level, so the fields in the table that the dimension is based on are [DTE MM] and [DTE YR]. In Visual Studio 2005 or in SQL Server Mgmt Studio I can browse the dimension and I see that Time has the following attributes: Year and Month both Regular attributes and Time (Key attribute). There is also a hierarchy named [Year - Month] and if I browse that it looks good dril down from All to Year to Month.
However, when I point my Reporting Services Datasource to the cube, and start Query Builder, I see two dimensions, [DTE MM] and [DTE YR] and no Time dimension.
[DTE MM] has attributes [DTE MM].[Month], [DTE MM].[Time], [DTE MM].[Year], [DTE MM].[Year - Month].
[DTE YR] has attributes [DTE YR].[Month], [DTE YR].[Time], [DTE YR].[Year], [DTE YR].[Year - Month]
This is causing me huge problems in my report. I need to use a date range in the query. To do this, I created Query Parameters and refer to Report Parameters that will be passed in. For example, I use ="[DTE YR].[Year - Month].[Year].&[" + Parameters!StartYear.Value + "].&[" + Parameters!StartMonth.Value +"]" (thanks to Simon Philips) as the query parameter for the Start Year Month, but if I use the [DTE YR].[Year - Month] in my SELECT, the data is not sliced in my query results. That is to say that the Year and Month show correctly, according to the date range, but the Measure is equal for each month and is equal to the total for the cube. To slice the data, I have to use [DTE YR].[Year].[Year] and [DTE MM].[Month].[Month] in my select, but then the data is shown for every month, i.e. the date range is ignored.
What am I doing wrong, or is this a quirk of RS that I can work around?

I am in the process of develping a MSRS report using an MSAS 2005 OLAP cube as my data source. In the MSRS Query Builder, I am using an MDX query which successfully executes in Management Studio. Something like the following:

The twist is that the AttributeHierarchyVisible property of the [Dim Attribute].[Hierarchy Not Visible] is set to False.
As mentioned previously, the query successfully executes in Management Studio. However when it is executed in the MSRS Query Builder, the following error message is displayed:
The query cannot be prepared: The query must have at least one axis. The first axis of the query should not have multiple hierarchies, nor should it reference any dimension other than the Measures dimension..
Parameter name: mdx (MDXQueryGenerator)
Is there a way to successfully query dimension attributes whose hierarchies are not visible?

I am facing an issue in MDX Query. I have a custom MDX query, When I run the query I am getting results too. Now my requirement is to show the dimension names in the query result, So that I can get those header names in the cell set itself. Please see the below image.
In this image I need to show 'Fiscal Year' and 'Fiscal Quarter' in that highlighted area. Is there any custom query for this?

I am working on a model where I have a sales fact table. Each fact record has four different customer fields (ship- to, sold-to, payer, and bill-to customer). I have one customer dimension table that joins to the sales fact table four times (once for each of the customer fields above). When viewing the data in Excel, I would like to have four hierarchies (ship -to, sold-to, payer, and bill-to customer) within Customer.
Is there a way to build hierarchies within my Customer dimension based on the same Customer table? What I want is to view the data in Excel and see the Customer dimension. Within Customer, I want four hierarchies.

I have an issue in producing output for the following query in MDX Query builder avaialable in BIDS. the error message I get is:
The query cannot be prepared: The query must have at least one axis. The first axis of the query should not have multiple hierarchies, nor should it reference any dimension other than the Measures dimension..

I have just taken over the job of sorting out a rather poorly designed database. It looks like it was 'upsized' from an access database to the SQL server. The SQL server is the 2000 version.
Now I am trying to generate a report of what the students in the database are owing by referencing the Receipt table and then all the available payment methods and allocations. I was wondering if there was anyway to work out data being displayed twice (Let me demonstrate)
Note1: All the tables are linked by a key of ReceiptNo. From what I can see there is a table for every payment type and allocation but no link between the two other then the receipt number.

This is fine but when I do analysis on this it appears as though the student has paid two deposit payments. I was wondering with out querying each table independently from an application if there was a criteria to specify that I only get one deposit result.
So as such say, give me all the payments but I only want one result from the other tables. I though about discrete but that wouldn't work here.

Hi!
Need some help building a query that does the following :
I have 2 Time Dimensions ; Time (Transdate) and ClosedDate (ClosedDate)
In my report/query, if [Time].CurrentMember = [Time].[YMD].[YMD].[2006].[200610].[20061031] I want to FILTER out all ClosedDate < [ClosedDate].[YMD].[YMD].[2006].[200610].[20061031]
Both Time Dimensions are Year -> Month -> Day and have the same Members.
I have every option available, using calculated Members and/or Measures to do this.
The report I'm creating is Aging of Receivables : Balance / 30 days / 60 days / etc.. But for the Aging, I need to filter like explained above.

Howdy folks. I have a SELECT question for you. Or maybe a WHERE question. That I am not sure is part of the problem. My application is ASP.NET 2.0, and I’d like to avoid getting into stored procedures right now, if I could.
I am trying to summarize the order status for each customer in the database (SQL Server 2005, by the way). I want to provide two counts: the number of open jobs per customer, and the number of rush jobs per customer. Something like this:
CustID CustName JobOpen JobRush
----------------------------------------------------------------
22 John Deere 47 3
24 MCP 32 7
37 BlueON 6 0
In my noobness, I developed this:
SELECT CustID, MAX(CustName) AS CustName,
COUNT (*) AS JobOpen
FROM Customers
INNER JOIN Jobs ON JobCustID = CustID
WHERE (JobDone = 0)
GROUP BY CustID
As you can see, it finds from the Jobs table all jobs that are not done (JobDone is a T/F field), joins the Jobs and Customers tables, groups by CustID, and counts the totals in each CustID group. It works great in outputting the first three columns that I am looking for.
But I cannot come up with a simple way to add JobRush (also a T/F field), because it needs a different WHERE clause than the one JobOpen uses. It would need
WHERE (JobRush = 1)
So maybe my question should be: how do I use multiple WHERE clauses, each with its own COUNT?
I did mess around with Common Table Expressions, and managed to build two CTEs (one with JobOpen results and the other with JobRush results) that I joined together. It worked in Studio Manager, but my ASP.NET page didn’t like it. I guess that means I could learn stored procedures, but wow I’d love to just have a nice complete SELECT command for my page.

When viewing an estimated query plan for a stored procedure with multiple query statements, two things stand out to me and I wanted to get confirmation if I'm correct.
1. Under <ParameterList><ColumnReference... does the xml attribute "ParameterCompiledValue" represent the value used when the query plan was generated?

<ColumnReference Column="@Measure" ParameterCompiledValue="'all'" />
</ParameterList>
</QueryPlan>
</StmtSimple>
2. Does each query statement that makes up the execution plan for the stored procedure have it's own execution plan? And meaning the stored procedure is made up of multiple query plans that could have been generated at a different time to another part of that stored procedure?

Hi,New to .Net and SQL. I have two tables that I have joined together. RentalControl_Main has the rental informationd and an Adjuster ID that links to the ADjuster table and the adjusters name. I am trying to create a report that gives the "Single" adjuster name and the totals for all of their contracts. I have a details report that gives each contract info. for each specific adjusters rentals. However, I want to just list the adjuster once and give all of their totals. Hi, how can I search using more than one field? This is a hard question to ask, I will see if I can explain it.
On a web form I have 7 various textboxes and dropdownlists. It is for a search. The user does not have to fill in all of them (he or she may want to use just one search field).
If I have 6 of the 7 fields blank, how can i get the result of just the field being used?
I have this example:sSQL.Append("and (table.fieldname= isnull(@parameter, table.fieldname) or table.fieldname IS null) ")but it doesn't seem to be doing the job.
Am I doing this right or is there another way?

Hi, I'm a bit stumped as to how to do this.I have a string[] with a list of users, and I want to query my database to select only the users in this array and bind the datasource to a GridView, but I don't know how to write an SQL query to search for multiple results from the same field.
E.g. Say I have two results in my string[], fred and bob.How can I select data from the database for just those two users - "SELECT * FROM tblUsers WHERE UserName='bob' AND ??";
IF this is possible, I also need to bind it to a gridview. I tried the following, but it didn't work as I needed it to:
for(int a = 0; a < userArray.Length; a++){ conn.Open(); SqlCommand command = new SqlCommand("SELECT * FROM tblUsers WHERE UserName='" + userArray[a] + "'", conn); SqlDataReader reader = command.ExecuteReader(); grid.DataSource = reader; grid.DataBind(); conn.Close()}
That 'worked', but as I'm sure you can see, the data that was bound to the gridview was only the last result found, not the whole result set.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have a table that is linked to other tables in one to many relationship.I have a query using LEFT OUTER JOINs to join the tables together.There are multiple counts in the query and count numbers are messed up.(if there are 4 records from one table and 3 from the other - it shows 12 as the count) Your help is appreciated.

Hi, I have a problem which I thought it has a simple solution but now I'm not even sure it is possible.
I have 3 tables Clients <-oo ClientContacts oo-> Contacts
(the <-oo means one to may relation between the tables)
A Client may have related none, one or many Contact records. The table ClientContacts is the link that stores that information. The field ClientContacts.Category represents the type of the contact and it will be used in queries. It may be owner, accountant, employee, etc.
My goal is to run a query which will return
Clients.Company, Clients.MailingStreet, Clients.MailingCity, Clients.MailingState
Contacts.FirstName, Contacts.LastName, Contacts.[E-mailAddress]
WHERE (Clients.WorkOnHold = 0)
The result should return values for
Contacts.FirstName, Contacts.LastName, Contacts.[E-mailAddress] if the Client has attached Contact records filtered by category,
and '','','' or <NULL>,<NULL>,<NULL> if the Client does not have any Contact records.
I tryed an INNER JOIN but it will return juts the records having contact information.
Any solutions are appreciated.

The INNER JOIN I tryed but is not good. It returns just clients having contacts attached.
