Help Connecting Ole/db Linked Server To Msaccess Database In A Different Machine Than Sql Server Resides
Jun 29, 2007
Hi,
I have a msaccess linked server that I use to execute sql 2000 stored procedures from a front end in adp (access data project) format without any problem, if it is used on the same machine where the sql server resides (with any user logged on). In any other machine on the local network where I also need to use it, I get an ole/db error message saying that the microsoft jet database engine can not open the file because it's allready opened exclusivly or because it do not has permissions. I created the linked server with both UNC and normal path with the same result.
Thank's for all the help/clues you can give me.

Hi,
I have setup a linked server to a DB2 database using "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers",
the connections works fine i am able to run select queries.
but the number of rows returned from the two following statements are different.
select * from linkedserver...tablename
select count(*) from linkedserver...tablename
e.g. The First statement returns 116 rows, whereas the second query returns count as 144....
I am a bit confused ?????
could anybody think of any possible reasons..
Cheers

Hi
I have a linked server to MSAccess DB and, when I try to select record from a table that have a column
with a bad date formatted (with year less than 1753) I receive the message:
.... conversion error from DBTYPE_DBTIMESTAMP to datetime....
My scope is set to NULL this bad values from Sql Server ...
I first try with something like
UPDATE LNK_SVR...TABLE SET FLD=NULL WHERE ISDATE(FLD)=0
But I receive the same error... perheaps the provider generate the error before an Sql Server evaluation ...
So I think to a passthrought query:
exec sp_serveroption @server='LNK_SVR',@optname='rpc out',@optvalue='true'
exec LNK_SVR...sp_executesql 'update table set FLD=NULL WHERE YEAR(FLD)<1753'
But I receive the folowing message ....
Messaggio 7213, livello 16, stato 1, riga 1
Il provider non è riuscito a passare parametri di stored procedure remota al server remoto 'LNK_SVR. Verificare che il numero, l'ordine e il valore dei parametri passati siano corretti.
Any suggestion is appreciate.
Thanks in advance

Hi all,
Apologies if this is a dumb question, but I'm tearing my hair out over the basics when I should be spending time learning ASP.NET 2.0 and C#. I've searched the archives and a lot of people seem to be getting the same error as me, but when trying to connect from remote machines.
I'm getting what seems to be a standard message ...
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
I'm not trying to connect remotely, I'm on my developer machine. The error comes up when trying to connect from within VS2005 (Tools, Connect to Database). It also comes up if I create a new web-site and go to the ASP.NET configuration tool (this is, I guess, trying to create the necessary database behind the scenes but is unable to connect to the database).
I suspect the error might be related to one or more of the following ...
September last year I installed VS2005 Express and SQL*SERVER Express. Both were fully un-installed when I bought VS2005 Professional before installing the new product.
When I set up SQL*SERVER 2005 Developer I remember choosing an option to have a separate user on my PC with administrative rights. Actually I don't recall much about what I chose but I can't find out where those permissions are managed from.
I've followed various instructions to check that remote access is enabled (despite the fact that I'm local, not remote). TCP and Named Pipes are both enabled (and I stopped then restarted SQL Server). I've checked that the service is started.
The odd thing is that I have had an application connect with the following string ...
SSLCon = new SqlConnection(@"Server=(local)SSLMJ;Integrated Security = True;" + "Database=SSLTESTRESULTS");
Though the application connection seems to work ok, I think I'm missing out lots of developer functionality because I can't get VS2005 to see the database or server.
Help ?

I'm trying to connect to a sql server machine from another machine on the network and I'm getting this error:
"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)"
More information about the machines:
All machines are on the same private netwrok, all in the same workgroup.
Machine1: this is the DB server, Win 2003 server, it has SQL 2005 developer edition, .Net runtime 2.0.
Machine2: trying to connect to machine 1, Win 2003 server, .Net runtime 2.0
On the DB server, TCP/IP is enabled with port 1433, also named pipes are enabled.
I checked the ERRORLOG and it says it's ready for connections and it's listening...Also there are no firewalls between the machines, I also added the sql server service .exe and the sql explorere .exe to the windows firewall exceptions on the DB server (although it's disabled)...
I'm not sure what else to do, I checked all sources online, applied anything related to this issue but not luck. This has wasted 3 hours of my time, this was a task that wouldn't take you a minute in older versions!! , Microsoft thinks it's making our life easier but in fact, I spend more time now on trouble shooting than before...
Let me know if you have a solution..
thanks,
Tamer

I need to switch from MS Access to SQL Server for my database. To set
up a development environment I downloaded the free Microsoft SQL Server
Express (February CTP version). I installed the required .NET Framework
v2, and then SQLExpress. The install was done using all the defaults,
and was done successfully. I also downloaded and installed the SQL
Express Manager Tool.
The SQL Server was installed on the same machine as my VS.NET
development environment. The SQL Server process is now running, and I
can connect to the server using the SQL Express Manager Tool. This
allows me to view and query the sample databases, but not much else.
To convert my Access .MDB database to SQL Server, I am trying to use
the MS Access Upsizing Wizard. The version of Access I am using is
Access 2002 on a Windows XP-Professional system. The problem is that
Access cannot get a connection to the SQL Server. I tried using the
default server name "(local)" and "Use Trusted Connection", but I
receive the following error:
Connection failed:
SQLState: '01000'
SQL Server Error: 2
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver[]Shared Memory]ConnectionOpen (Connect()).
Connection failed:
SQLState: '08001'
SQL Server Error: 17
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver[]Shared Memory]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
Curiously, I get this exact same error message even if the SQL service
is stopped. So I'm pretty sure the problem is that it is not finding
the SQL server, and not a security issue.
In order to connect to the SQL server using the SQL Server Manager
Tool, you have to provide the actual instance name for the server
"COMPNAMESQLExpress". So I tried using this server name in the Access
Upsizing Wizard, but this returns the same error message as above
except the first SQL Server Error is 53. I also tried using a Login ID
and password (using the Windows administrator ID and password, and also
the "sa" ID and password) to no avail.
I am at wits end, and can't figure out why Access can't find the SQL Server. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks.

hi there - I'm praying someone here can shed some light on this - after many google and web searches, I have found users with similar issues, but have yet to find a solution.
Problem: I have recently upgraded my desktop from Windows XP to Windows Vista Ultimate (clean install) and have migrated my local machine to SQL Server 2005. However I have a number of .Net projects that access databased on another server running SQL Server 2000 - prior to my upgrade to Vista, I was running SQL Server 2000 on my desktop as well. During the install, everything seemed to go well, and I also installed the SQL Server 2005 Service pack as instructed via the MSDN site. However, when attempting to test my .net projects on my desktop pc (ie visit http://localhost), I encounter the error:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
note that the server I am attempting to connect TO is the old SQL 2000 server - NOT 2005. I specify my connection info in the web.config - and it points to an external ip address on the web.
Can anyone shed some light on this? I've tried enabling remote access on my local SQL 2005 install, but I'm fairly sure thats for servers that want to connect to my desktop, rather than my desktop attempting to connect to external servers. Any help is greatly appreciated - I'm pulling my hair out over trying to figure this out! :)
To summarize my setup (if it helps)
Desktop PC:Windows Vista (Ultimate)SQL Server 2005Visual Studio 2005II 7.0.Net 2.0 (ASP.Net Application)
External Server (co-located at a datacenter)Windows Server 2003SQL Server 2000IIS 6.0.Net 2.0 (ASP.Net Application)
Much appreciated,
Ted

As a database developer, I have so many databases that I "own" scattered across various servers that it''s getting difficult to remember where all of my databases reside. It doesn't work that the DBAs have taken to some very hard to remember server naming conventions.
I was going to create aliases via the configuration manager, but it turns out the DBAs overwrite my entries each night with THEIR aliases and they won't add any for my use.
So I decided to simply add some records to my host file so that instead of having to connect to "SERVER-AD_DADF-DAFDASS" I can just use "CustomerA".
This solution seems to work until I tried to access a linked server. If I connect to the main server via it's actual name, I can hit the remote/linked server with no issue. However, if I connect to the main server using it's alias, connection to the remote/linked server fails with: Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYANONYMOUS LOGON'.
The linked server is set up to use current security context and I'm not logging into the alias any differently that I do when using the actual server name.

Looks to be a sql double hoping problem if so configuration each client domain account to enable delegation will be challenging as mentioned in the following articles instead service account only might work if possible.

I am using SQL 2000 (Standard Edition, SP4) and have created a linked server to access a Access MDB file. When I run a simple query against that server, I get the error:
Server: Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
OLE DB provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' reported an error.
[OLE/DB provider returned message: System resource exceeded.]
OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' ICommandText::Execute returned 0x80004005: ].
I am able to connect to this same Access MDB file from another SQL server (SQL 2000 Enterprise Edition, SP4). I have compared the two servers and they both have the same version of MDAC (2.8) and the same version of the Jet OLE DB Provider.
Any idea why this would work from one server and not from the other. Also, I was able to perform the same queries from the first server a week back.
Thanks in advance for you help.

What's up with this?
This takes like 0 secs to complete:
update xxx_TableName_xxx
set d_50 = 'DE',modify_timestamp = getdate(),modified_by = 1159
where enc_id in
('C24E6640-D2CC-45C6-8C74-74F6466FA262',
'762E6B26-AE4A-4FDB-A6FB-77B4782566C3',
'D7FBD152-F7AE-449C-A875-C85B5F6BB462')
but From linked server this takes 8 minutes????!!!??!:
update [xxx_servername_xxxx].xxx_DatabaseName_xxx.dbo.xxx_TableName_xxx
set d_50 = 'DE',modify_timestamp = getdate(),modified_by = 1159
where enc_id in
('C24E6640-D2CC-45C6-8C74-74F6466FA262',
'762E6B26-AE4A-4FDB-A6FB-77B4782566C3',
'D7FBD152-F7AE-449C-A875-C85B5F6BB462')
What settings or whatever would cause this to take so much longer from the linked server?
Edit:
Note) Other queries from the linked server do not have this behavior. From the stored procedure where we have examined how long each query/update takes... this particular query is the culprit for the time eating. I thought it was to do specefically with this table. However as stated when a query window is opened directly onto that server the update takes no time at all.
2nd Edit:
Could it be to do with this linked server setting?
Collation Compatible
right now it is set to false? I also asked this question in a message below, but figured I should put it up here.

I have a sproc that will generate a dynamic call (and this must be done in a stored procedure),... Anyway the dynamic call I am having problems with is that I need to dynamically create a statement to backup a database. It works as long as the database is on the same server / instance as the stored procedure. I want to be able to from server/instance A create a command that does a backup of a database that is on server B. I just can't figure out the syntax for a database backup where the database is on another server.
Trying something like [ServerName].[DatabaseName] does not work...

We are upgrading from SQL 2008R2 to SQL2014 but we have discovered that a couple of our applications are not supported on 2014. We'd like to keep one 2008R2 server and one 2014 server until we have time to upgrade the applications and move everything to the new server. The problem is we have custom code in some of the 2014 databases that access tables in the 2008 databases.
I know we can easily do cross server joins by using a linked server, but it would be a huge undertaking to find all that code and add a linked server name in front of every table, stored procedure, etc. So my question is, is there any way to move a database to a different server and still be able to access it without having to qualify the object names with a linked server? Is there some kind of server/database synonym that can be setup that would be recognized by all databases?

First of all let me explain that I am a complete newbie to this SQL stuff. I am in the process of reading a book, and followed the books suggestions for what I want to do, but it doesn't work. I know this has been covered several times in this forum, but no one post in particular covered exactly what I want to do.
I want to copy the database from the server to my local machine.
First, do I need to have SQL running on my machine in order to copy the database? I do have Enterprise Manager running, does that mean SQL Server is running locally?
Secoond, I tried using the Copy Wizard, but when I get to the target list, my local machine is not listed. How do I get it listed so I can copy the database?
I hope my questions are not too stupid... but then I'd be stupid if I didn't ask questions.
Thanks in advance for your help...

I have installed on a localmachine sqlexpress. Also my application is installed on the local machine.
But for the night-backup of the database I want to put the database on the company server.
Let's say the database is on: X:datamydatabase.mdf
Why cant't I attach this database with the manager of sqlexpress
Second:
I have installed on local machine sqlexpress AND also the database
Why can't I backup the file to the server like:
BACKUP DATABASE [mydatabase] to DISK=x:datamydatabase.bak WITH FORMAT
It looks I can only backup to the localmachine.
thanks a lot

I'm using MSAccess 2k as a front end to a SQL Server 2k database.
I have a user set up in SQL Server to be database owner for a specific database.
Using NT authentication.
Using ADO.
The MSAccess application executes a store procedure on the SQL Server that (1) deletes a tables if it exists, (2) creates and populates a table (the owner shows up in Enterprise Manager as the user name) and then (3) uses the table (read) in a join to do some other processing.
The (1) delete works fine.
The (2) table is created and populated fine.
On (3) the Select (inner join) to do the aditional processing I get an error message that the table name used is an invalid object.
Workaround.
If I create the table as sa separately and in the store procedure, instead of deleting, creating and populating the table I merely truncate the table and then repopulate it, everything works fine.
I would prefer to not have the table sitting around the database all the time.
Anyway, I'd like to figure out why the table is causing a problem.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Hi,
I am getting below error when exporting data from SQL Server 2005 to MS Access.
[DTS.Pipeline] Error: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_PROCESSINPUTFAILED. The ProcessInput method on component "OLE DB Destination" (1706) failed with error code 0xC0202009. The identified component returned an error from the ProcessInput method. The error is specific to the component, but the error is fatal and will cause the Data Flow task to stop running. There may be error messages posted before this with more information about the failure.
Its direct mapping from OLE DB Source (SQL Server 2005) to OLE DB Dest (MS-Access Database)
Help from anyone. Plz its urgent.
Regards,

Hi and thanks in advance for your help.
I have a dilemma and I need some expert help with this. I am trying to make a copy of a remote Database and then replicated the DB and it's contents on my local machine so I can build a test site to run data with. I tried to remot into the server machine but I guess that feature is not allowed by the honest of the remote machine. Since I build on my local machine and would like to be able to test data on my local machine.... I would like to copy the remote DB to my local computer and then I can run my test app on my local server. The version of SQL on the remote machine is SQL Express 2005 and I have SQL 2005 on my machine. Please give me how to accomplish this please.
