Can't Install 2005 SQL Server Management Studio, It Doesnt Show Up. What A Joke!

Nov 1, 2007

Hello I have wasted several hours on this simple problem and I'm ready to give up. I simply want SQL Server Management Studio on my laptop so I can connect to our 2005 servers and manage them. I have several different versions of 2005 from our MSDN subscription including but not limited to:

SQL 2005 Enterprise Edition (MSDN Library DVD)
SQL 2005 Workgroup Edition
SQL 2005 Standard Edition
Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server (SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition)

Everytime I tried to install it, the Server Management Studio simply would not install. I looked for the exe files and didn't find them. I verified the path several times and they simply didn't install. I googled and found a few solutoins but none helped. For example on:
http://aspadvice.com/blogs/name/archive/2007/09/24/Installing-SQL-Server-Management-Studio-with-SQL-Server.aspx

They stated to go to the 'Tools' folder on the CD and run it from there, I do not have these folders on my SQL 2005 CD/DVDs. I tried to reinstall it a few times with selection only the management tools for the client, but it thinks I have SQL 2005 installed!!! I uninstalled it from add/remove, and it didn't work. I deleted the folders and it didn't work. I ran

msicuu2.exe and that still isn't working.

Are there ANY suggestions on how to get this freaking Server Management Studio installed? MS really blew it on this one. Thanks in advance.

Help Needed For Transaction Support In SQL Server 2005

Jun 21, 2006

Hi,I have 2 stored procedure 1st insert the data in parent tables and return the Id. and second insert child table data using that parent table id as paramenter. I have foreign key relationship between these two tables also.my data layer methods somewhat looks likepublic void Save(order value){using (TransactionScope transactionScope = new TransactionScope(TransactionScopeOption.Required))         {              int orderId =  SaveOrderMaster(value);            value.OrderId = orderid;              int childId = SaveOrderDetails(value);             //complete the transaction              transactionScope.Complete();        }}here  1. SaveOrderMaster() calls an stored procedure InserOrderData which insert a new record in order table and return the orderId  which is identity column in Order table.2. SaveOrderDetails() call another sotored procedure which insert order details in to table "orderdetail" using the foreign key "orderid".My Problem:Some time the above method works correctly but when i call it repeatledly (in a loop) with data,  some time it gives me foreign key error which state that orderid is not existsin table Order. This will happen only randomly. I am not able to figureout the reason. does some one face the same problem. if yes, what could be the reason and/or solution.

SQL Server Express 2008 - Missing Client Tools / Management Studio / Profiler

Dec 13, 2007

I downloaded and performed a full install of SQL Server Express 2008 Nov CTP. It was installed on a fresh installation of Windows Vista Enterprise x64.

During setup, I checked the 'Client Tools' box which has the description:
"Includes management and development tools: SQL Server Management Studio, SQL Server Configuration Manager, SQL Server Profiler, and Database Engine Tuning Advisor"

The installation ran fine with no errors. After install I looked for the Management Studio but couldnt find it anywhere. No SQL Server Profiler or Database Tuning Advisor either. The only tool that appears to have installed is the SQL Server Configuration Manager.

If I check my Start Menu, the only 2008 items that exist are

Error After Db Failover If Client App Already Connected To Db

Apr 7, 2008

The following looks very much like the problem reported for the JDBC driver.

http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=688897&SiteID=1
https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=191767

----------------------------

I've written a small VB .Net app using Visual Studio 2005 to test mirroring from the client's perspective.

I have a button that does the following: 1) opens a connection to a sql 2005 database (SP2), 2) uses the connection, 3) closes the database connection.

After running this code, but while the client app is still running, I failover the database to the failover partner.

When click my button again, I get the following error: "An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)". Checking the Event log on what is now the mirror, I see a string of "18456 Login failed for user 'testuser'"

If I close the app and launch it again, it does the right thing (and connects to the new primary). Also, instead of closing/re-opening the app, if I wait long enough (e.g. 10 minutes), then try again, it connects successfully to the new primary. Finally, instead of closing/re-opening the app if I tweak the connection string (e.g. change the application name) then try to connect again, that also works.

Based on articles I've read online, I've disabled the connection pool in my connection string, but that didn't solve my problem (although I'm getting a different error than if pooling is on).

Here is the connection string I am using:

Data Source=DB1PACS,12345;Failover Partner=DB2PACS,12345;Pooling=False;Initial Catalog=PACSTest_Client;Integrated Security=No;User ID=testuser;Password=*****

Here is the code snippet that I run before and after the failover. Based on the fact that I'm not using Pooling, the ClearAllPools() if overkill. Any help would be appreciated; I've been researching this for days without luck.

I can keep clicking the button that runs this code, and it keeps failing. If I wait long enough (e.g. 10 minutes) and then click the button again, it works. Or I could quit/restart the app, or tweak the connection string.

Dim TestClient_Connection As New SqlClient.SqlConnection(txtConnectionString.Text)

If Me.DataGridView1.Rows.Count > 0 Then Me.Test_ClientDataSet.Clear()

Try

TestClient_Connection.Open()

Me.User_TTableAdapter.Connection = TestClient_Connection
Me.User_TTableAdapter.Fill(Me.Test_ClientDataSet.User_T)

TestClient_Connection.Close()
TestClient_Connection.Dispose()
SqlConnection.ClearAllPools()

Catch sqlex As SqlClient.SqlException

txtErrorMessage.Text = "Error State: " _
+ sqlex.Errors.Item(0).Number.ToString _
+ " Message: " + sqlex.Message

End Try

Similar to the JDBC driver article I mentioned, when using the connection string above (where DB1 is the principal and DB2 is the failover partner) if DB2 is the actual principal when I initially query and close the database connection, then after failover to DB1 my application reconnect just fine.

Thanks

[Error Loading Mining Model Metadata: Not Connected.]

Dec 13, 2007

This has been driving me mad for several days. I have setup SQL Server 2005 Express (SP2) on a box. I have SQL Server Management Studio (9.00.3042.00) installed on a client box. I can connect to the 2005 server and created a test database on the machine. But when I try to open a query on the database, I always get the above error message "[Error loading mining model metadata: Not connected.]" in the LHS pane and the query window remains unconnected. If I try to connect (by clicking on the connect button) I get a login screen for Analysis Services, but I don't have Analysis Services running on any boxes. The login screen doesn't allow me to change anything other than Server Name. This happens even if I open a new Database Engine Query through the File/New menu.

All I want to do to execute a query against my database. I don't want to use Analysis Services. What am I doing wrong? I have almost the exact same setup at home and it works fine.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Login Needed To Bypass A Trigger --- Help

Feb 3, 2000

Is it possible to have a login that can access a table, which has an Update trigger on a column, and do some updating on another column but not have the trigger fire?

I cannot disable the Trigger. This db is on production and the trigger cannot be taken off. I also cannot bcp the data out and do the updating and bcp back in. The production table must remain as is, however I need to update some cols without the trigger firing.

Any ideas??

Error Redirected To Script Component : Package Doesnt Fail.

Apr 18, 2007

I have created a data flow task. In that, in a 'data conversion', if a column fails validation then that row is redirected to a script component, which in turn writes the error to a variable.

But though the error is generated and script component receives the error, package doesnt fail.

Is there any way to set the package result to failure inside the script component? I tried set 'FailPackageOnFailure' to true but doesnt work.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Needed: User, Login, Connection Advice.

Mar 12, 2005

HI,
I'm still on the steep side of the learning curve with ASP.NET. I've looked through a number of threads on this forum, and have gotten pieces of the answer, but need help getting past a roadblock.

I haven't been able to get a simple test application to connect to the Pubs database loaded on my system running MSDE. The only control in the application is a WebDataForm created by the Wizard. Everything works well (even the Preview Data form the Data menu loads and displays the correct data), except when the form is viewed in a browser. Click the load button and an error:Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE'.

Similar stories are common on this forum, and I tried to address the problem. I'm quite sure it's a autherization or authentication problem. I have Windows Server 2003 (with IIS 6.0), VS.NET 03 and MSDE as the SQL server on the same box. The MSDE server is using Windows Security mode. I Created a new user called ASPNET on the Windows Server. I added a login to the SQL Server 'WinServerNameASPNET' using windows auth. Still get the same login failed message.

Is there something I'm missing? Do I have to add a new user to IIS?

For the record, what users/settings do I need to have in Windows, SQL-Server and IIS, get past this login problem.

Thanks for answering this basic question - one more time.

Error 15002 Executing Sp_setapprole Statement Using The SQL Native Client Connected To SQL Server 2005

I am getting this error when I issue the sp_setapprole command using sqlexecdirect() ODBC api call. Is there any way to work around this? Or is there a fix to the SQL Native Client? The error 15002 message text states "The procedure sys.sp_setapprole cannot be executed within a transaction". This is on a new connection so there should be no transactions active at the time. Security Rights Needed To Start And Stop Services From SQL Server Management Studio

Jun 21, 2007

Hello everyone.

I have a question about granting enough rights to allow a non admin user to start and stop a sql server service via the SQL Server Management Studio by right clicking on the server node.

I have changed the acl's of the SQL Server service security and gave the user rights to start and stop the service. This does allow them to connect remotly to the server using computer manager and they successifully start and stop the service. But, in SQL Server Management Studio the option still does not show up, unless he is a admin of the server.

Does anyone know what other security settings I need to address for the start and stop to show up when I right click on the server node?

Thanks for any help

I get the following error when I try to run Profiler from my client to any of our SQL Servers:

Use the SQL Server client configuation application to ensure that you are
connecting using either the Named Pipes or Multiprotocol network library.

We'd like to be able to use TCP/IP for this but I've tried it with Multiprotocol also and still get the same error message.

I would appreciate any suggestions for resolving this.

Login To SQL Server Management Studio

Nov 17, 2006

Hi,

I am facing a strange behavior during loging in to SQL server mangement studio.

Whenever I install SQL server express, various protocols like Named Pipe and TCP/IP and SQL browser are disabled by default. But still I am able to log in to SQL Server throguh Management studio.

But when I try to log in to SQL server throguh one of my applications, it allows me to log in to it only for one time. From next time onwards, I am not able to log in to SQL server neither through my application nor through Management studio.

I connect to SQL server using "machine name""Instance name". Machine name is the name of machine on my office LAN.

PS: Once this problem occurs, I can log in to SQL server if I use "localhost" instead of "machine name".

Any suggestions would be tremendously helpful.

Regards

-Orion

Profiler Error Data Column

Jul 27, 2006

I run Profiler against my production Db to keep an eye on poorly performing t-SQL batches and SPs. There's an "Error" column in the profiler output. According to BOL (topic:Describing Events by Using Data Columns), Error = The error number of a given event. Often this is the error number stored in sysmessages.

The profiler output usually shows "0 - OK" in the error column. But it sometimes shows "1 - Error" or "2 - Abort" in this column. What do these error messages mean? I've looked around but haven't been able to find anything more detailed about what these two messages mean and how I can perhaps dig deeper to figure out what's going on. (When these values are displayed, CPU is usually taking a beating and the SPID runs this for at least 30 seconds before displaying information pertaining to this SPID).

Thanks much,

Smitha

SQL Server Management Studio Login Issues

Sep 6, 2007

We have SQL Standard installed on a Windows XP. I start up SQL Server Management Studio and am presented with the authentication dialog. I select Windows Authentication and click Connect and it hangs. If I select SQL Server authentication and choose a known correct login, I get the same result (hangs). If I Cancel, all buttons are disabled, but the dialog remains. I cannot even shut it down with the upper right corner "x". The only way I've found to end it is via Task Manager.

Also, if I just cancel out of the authentication dialog box without attempting to connect, I'm able to do admin things like attach/detach databases, view tables via the object browser, etc.. I cannot execute queries.
Help guys, iam stuck.

Thanks a lot...

Support For SQL Express2005 My Host Provider Does Not Provide Support?

Dec 5, 2005

Reader Community
I've just started hosting my newly created Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition web site.  Unfortunately the Login group membership functions will not function correctly.  Having contacted the web service hosting provider, They replied: "We do not support SQL express2005.  The only way to use the extra functions of ASP.NET2 such as group membership is if it is using an SQL 2000 database to connect to. "
Is it possible to design web sites with Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition that store membership details on an SQL 2000 database?
I've just paid £88 approx. $140 for a years subscription, have I chosen the wrong web service hosting provider?
Should I have designed the web site with a better web site design software tool that also makes designing membership login functionality easy, just as Microsoft Visual Web developer 2005 express edition?
Look forward to all comments?
Regards

Philip
