Help - Still Trying To Insert 255+ Chars Into Text
Jun 7, 1999
How do you insert more than 255 characters into a text field? or am I using READTEXT and DATALENGTH incorrectly?
I am trying to concatenate two 255 varchar strings. Both do have 255 characters of data.
I want to insert the concatenated strings into a field define as a text data type.
if I try to ' insert into tempTbl(textFieldDataType) values (@text1+@text2) it appears only the @text1 is inserted.
I have been told the data is really there, but I can only read the 256 position + with READTEXT.
DECLARE @textptr varbinary(16)
select @textptr = (select TEXTPTR(textFieldDataType) from tempTbl where pktempTbl = 33)
READTEXT tempTbl.textFieldDataType @textPtr 255 10
This should have read 10 text positions after the 255th position. However, I get msg
Msg 7124, Level 16, State 1
The offset and length specified in the READTEXT command is greater than the actual data length of 255.
If I use the datalength function, it appears to confirm that @text2 was never inserted
declare @length int
select @length = (select datalength(textFieldDataTypet) from tempTbl where pktempTbl = 33)
select @length
Hi all,I have a variable called Description which is set from a database field - How do i set another variable to grab the first 200 chars from this var? hope this makes sense
CREATE TABLE saved_query ( id INT NOT NULL IDENTITY(1,1) PRIMARY KEY, name VARCHAR(32) NOT NULL, query_text VARCHAR(2048) NOT NULL )
CREATE TABLE saved_query ( id INT NOT NULL IDENTITY(1,1) PRIMARY KEY, name VARCHAR(32) NOT NULL, query_text VARCHAR(2048) NOT NULL)
and whenever I insert or update the query_text field, it's always truncated to 255 characters. Why? I clearly specified a larger field size. I also tried defining query_text as a "TEXT" but got the same result.
I'm running SQL Server 2K (sp3a) and when I run the following query (inquery analyzer):SELECT id, LEN(ForeignWord) as Length, ForeignWordFROM WordsWHERE Language ='Thai' and LEN(ForeignWord) > 300ORDER BY Length descI receive the following results:id Length ForeignWord------- ----------- -----------34756 445 เ#...truncated at 25534839 412 เ$...truncated at 25537613 350 โ#...truncated at 25537808 315 โ#...truncated at 25538140 315 โ#...truncated at 255(The ForeignWord field is defined as varchar(1000))Note that even though the server says that the lengths are in excess of255 characters, the results are all truncated at 255 characters.I read that SQL Server 6.5 and 7.0 had some issues related to nativeaccess versus OleDb or ODBC, but this is Server 2K patched with thelatest updates.Any idea why my varchar fields are being truncated?-- RickHere is my table definition:CREATE TABLE [Words] ([ID] [bigint] IDENTITY (1, 1) NOT NULL ,[Language] [varchar] (50) NOT NULL ,[Module] [int] NOT NULL ,[Lesson] [int] NOT NULL ,[EnglishWord] [varchar] (1000) NOT NULL ,[ForeignWord] [varchar] (1000) NOT NULL ,[Note] [varchar] (2000) NULL ,[Military] [tinyint] NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_Table1_Military]DEFAULT (0),[Supplemental] [tinyint] NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_Table1_Supplemental] DEFAULT (0),[SoundFileName] [varchar] (1000) NULL)
Any way to parse out a text value (not varChar, using text data type) that is > than 8000 characters long? I'm looping through 1 big string passed to the DB that is pipe delimited, but I find myself needing the substring function to keep track of which segment I'm acting on (after an update, I then need to take that segment and remove it from the string)...but the subString function won't take anything larger than 8000 chars.
Say I have this string that is text data type...
'aaa|bbb|ccc|ddd|....'
..and so on, surpassing 8000 char length, how could you parse it out using the pipes as the delimter, then do an Update using that segment? Afterward, return to that string and find the next segment, then use it, and so on (in a loop). I tried using an update to set the string = replace(string, segmentJustUsed, '') to "erase" it, but replace can't take text as the datatype. Any help? Hope this isn't to confusing.
I have a table in SQL Server 2000 which has few triggers. When I try to update a record in that table, I get following message:
Warning: The table '[TABLE_NAME]' has been created but its maximum row size (17275) exceeds the maximum number of bytes per row (8060). INSERT or UPDATE of a row in this table will fail if the resulting row length exceeds 8060 bytes.
where the data I am updating is well less than the field limit. The triggers are stored in syscomments table and when I dropped these triggers, the update statements were executed without this message. Is there anyway I can change the data type of field text in syscomments from nvarchar to ntext?
We had a sql 2000 db that had full text implemented on it. We upgrade that server to a 2005 server and now the full text searches that once worked don't. Most do work just the ones with ; or special characters in the query string don't work.
Anyone have the same behavior and how to get it to wrok again?
Hi;I am trying to write a rountine ( below ) that will go into a colum oftext data type ( fae.pmcommnt ) locate the word "to" and replace it.I have the routine below. I get no error messages, but it also seemsto do nothing :).Any clues would be greatly appreciated.ThanksSteve================================================== =============declare @ptrP intSELECT @ptrP = PATINDEX('%to%', pmcommnt)from fae where projid ='00013'declare @ptrPC binary(16)select @ptrPC = TEXTPTR(pmcommnt)from faeif( TEXTVALID ('fae.pmcommnt', @ptrPC ) > 0 )print 'works'print @ptrPUPDATETEXT fae.pmcommnt @ptrPC @ptrP 2 'JJ'select projid, pmcommnt from fae
I receive the error " [OLE DB Destination [1907]] Warning: Truncation may occur due to inserting data from data flow column "GENDER" with a length of 255 to database column "GENDER" with a length of 2. " on the source flow.
I have done some googling and came up with this post: http://torontosql.dotnetnuke-portal.com/Default.aspx?tabid=32233 which I thought may help, but it does not.
The query against the access datasource features the column: iif([sex]=1, 'm', 'f'). I tried using left(..., 2) as well, but SSIS is determind to treat the field as 255 characters for some reason.
I don't even particualrly care that the field is 255 chars and the sources is only two, I just want the data in! I have other fields coming up with similar error.
Can someone please advise?
PS, what is th significance of the "External Columns" Vs "Output Columns" on the Input and Output Properties tab in Advanced Editor?
I am really struggling with SSIS, it is not as intuitive as DTS.
I have a SQL SERVER database which has Articles Table. This table contains "Description" field which is of type "text". I am trying to insert 800- 1000 words of data into this field. This data also contains code snippets. I dont know for some reason it only inserts one or two lines and thats it. No error is being thrown. I am using multiline textbox to enter the data into the database. any ideas
It displays something like this:
test 1
By AzamSharp
Creating XML Men // This is very long text. Actually its the whole article but it only displays three words
I have a web form with a text field that needs to take in as much as the user decides to type and insert it into an nvarchar(max) field in the database behind. I've tried using the new .write() method in my update statement, but it cuts off the text after a while. Is there a way to insert/update in SQL 2005 this without resorting to Bulk Insert? It bloats the transaction log and turning the logging off requires a call to sp_dboptions (or a straight-up ALTER DATABASE), which I'd like to avoid if I can.
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[instructions]( [site_no] [int] NOT NULL, [instructions] [text] NULL ) Select top 3 * from instructions
Output
Site_noInstructions 20Request PIN then proceed 21Request PIN if wrong request name 22Request PIN allowed to use only numbers
All text instructions start with “Request PIN” but after that the text are different for every site_no
I need insert in all site_no rows and after the “Request PIN” the text “and codeword” keeping the current rest of text
Desired output
Site_noInstructions 20Request PIN and codeword then proceed 21Request PIN and codeword if wrong request name 22Request PIN and codeword allowed to use only numbers
Hello,I'm trying to update a single field of a record and i want to do it using a standard multi line text box but I'm not sure how to write the c# command to process the sql update. I would also like the entry to be added into the database with line breaks. Thanks for your help
I am trying to SELECT various fields from a table in SQL Server to INSERT INTO a Text file defined using a Schema.ini. I know that this can be done using BCP (not sure if I could specify which fields as not all are required), DTS (which I have done) and with a Linked Server (where I keep getting a bookmark error). The process used in Access is [Sample#csv] IN 'C:' 'TEXT;' but I can't seem to find the format to use in SQL using either a MSDASQL or ODBC connection string. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
When users enter text into a textbox, to be INSERTed into my table, SQL Server throws an error if their text contains a single quote. For example, if they enter "It's great!" then it causes this error:Error: Incorrect syntax near 's'. Unclosed quotation mark after the character string ''. How can I allow text with single quotes to be inserted into the table?
Hi, I am having three text box which accepts user data & insert that in sql database. But I am not able to do this , I think this is the simplest of all . I am trying to take a value from at textbox and insert into a database. I think I need to convert the text to an integer - but I keep getting an error message saying I'm not allowed to use column names. Basically, I need to figure out how to take user input from these tet boxes and insert them into a database. Any ideas would be welcomed. the exact error is at the bottom the code. Here is the code:Imports System.DataImports System.Data.SqlClientPartial Class County_ConversionTest Inherits System.Web.UI.Page Protected Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click Dim v1 As Integer Dim v2 As Integer 'Dim v3 As Integer v1 = Integer.Parse(TextBox1.Text) v2 = Integer.Parse(TextBox2.Text) TextBox3.Text = (v1 + v2) End Sub Protected Sub Button2_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button2.Click Dim strconn As String = "Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=C:InetpubwwwrootHCBSApp_DataDivAging_Data.MDF;Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True" Dim cnnDivAging As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection(strconn) Dim v1 As Integer Dim v2 As Integer Dim v3 As Integer v1 = CInt(TextBox1.Text) v2 = CInt(TextBox2.Text) v3 = CInt(TextBox3.Text) Dim strsql As String = "INSERT INTO tblTest (Name, fv1,fv2,fv3)" + _ "Values ('George',v1,v2,v3)" Dim cmdUpdates As SqlCommand = New SqlCommand(strSQL, cnnDivAging) cmdUpdates.Connection = cnnDivAging cnnDivAging.Open() cmdUpdates.CommandType = CommandType.Text cmdUpdates.ExecuteNonQuery() cnnDivAging.Close() End SubEnd ClassHere is the error message -

I have imported an event log file from an NT server in a test database . The table has been created automatically with some 10 columns as Col001...Col002 ...and so on till Col0010 . Now i want to copy the data of the event logs to specific columns . So i created a table with name such as Evnt , date , time , server and evntdescription so that whenever i can execute a simple query like
Select * from tablename where type = 'app' , Server = 'test1 ' . so that i get all the results for that server 'test1 with type 'application' .
The problem is how do i insert that event log file into the table which i have created with different columns names . So that the data with 'App' should go to column 'type , data with server name should go to the column name server and so on ..
I tried all the was but could not succeed . Can i get some help in this regard please through some stored procedures or through DTS , if its possible .
Hi,Question: Why is INSERT of a string having 8000+ characters causing truncation in a TEXT field? We are working on a website for a client, and one of their CMS-driven pages contains more than 8000 chars for its content. The database field was originally TEXT datatype at the default size, but the content was getting truncated upon INSERT. So I looked into why this was happening, tried many things including: 1. Executing: EXEC sp_tableoption 'section', 'text in row', '7000'2. Changing datatype from TEXT to VARCHAR(8000). (of course this truncated at 8000).And this truncation still occurring. This is happening on SQL Server 2000 installed and configured on our client's server. The servers we host don't have this problem, and we have even tested the INSERT on our server and it does not truncate. So why is it truncating only on our client's Sql Server? Is there some kind of default configuration setting that limits the allowable length?I'm not intimately familiar with the large BLOB datatypes, and haven't really needed to deal with this issue before now. Now the client is upset about the limitation and does not wish to copy edit the content for their webpage. This is an urgent matter. I need to figure out the problem within a few hours today (it is morning in Europe on Tuesday 14 mar 2006 right now). Thanks in advance.UPDATE: I HAVE RESOLVED THE ISSUE. THE PROBLEM WAS A RESTRICTION IN THE STORED PROCEDURE INPUT VARIABLE DECLARATION -- WAS TRUNCATING AT 8000 CHARACTERS.
Hi All,This may seem like a stupid question but is there a way to keep textformatting when you add it to a database? Such as Paragraphs and linebreaks?Any help greatly appreciated.Blaine
I import a group of sentences INSERT from a text file .... test
Insert Into XXXXX Values('UUUUUU','3') Insert Into XXXXX Values('UUUUUU','3') Insert Into XXXXX Values('UUUUUU','3') Insert Into XXXXX Values('UUUUUU','3') Insert Into XXXXX Values('UUUUUU','3') Insert Into XXXXX Values('UUUUUU','3') Insert Into XXXXX Values('UUUUUU','3') Insert Into XXXXX Values('UUUUUU','3')
The file contains 1000 insert (Aprox); I read lines for lines the file I make the insert
In VS.NET 2003 it works correctly and the process consumes little memory but In VS.NET 2005 the pocket is without space.
How I can specify the factor of growth of the database SQL Mobile?
how do i insert a large chunk of text into a table column. my project is to build a news website. where people can go and read news articles. the articles are provided by the author in word format, so how do i insert that news article into the table's column? any help would be appreciated
Hello everyone!I'm having a problem with inserting the content of a text file into a Sql Server 2005 database.I'm reading the text file into a dataset, and works fine. What I can't do is what I suspect is the simple part: Insert all the data into a table that has exactly the same configuration that the file. I've never worked with dataset's before, and I can't seem to find the answer to this! This is what I have done so far: Dim i2 As Integer Dim j As Integer Dim File As String = Server.MapPath("..DocsFactsFORM_MAN_V3_1.txt") Dim TableName As String = "Facts" Dim delimiter As String = "9"
Dim result As DataSet = New DataSet() Dim s As StreamReader = New StreamReader(File) Dim columns As String() = s.ReadLine().Split(Chr(9)) result.Tables.Add(TableName) Dim strs1 As String() = columns For i2 = 0 To CInt(strs1.Length) - 1 Dim col As String = strs1(i2) Dim added As Boolean = False Dim [next] As String = "" Dim i As Integer = 0 While Not added Dim columnname As String = String.Concat(col, [next]) columnname = columnname.Replace(Chr(9), "") If Not result.Tables(TableName).Columns.Contains(columnname) Then result.Tables(TableName).Columns.Add(columnname) added = True Else i += 1 [next] = String.Concat("_", i.ToString()) End If End While Next i2 Dim strs2 As String() = s.ReadToEnd().Split(Chr(13) & Chr(10).ToString()) For j = 0 To CInt(strs2.Length) - 1 Dim items As String() = strs2(j).Split(Chr(9)) result.Tables(TableName).Rows.Add(items) Next j So now I have my dataset populated with all the information, but how can I insert it into the database? If anyone can help I would appreciate very, very much!Thank you Paula
Ok so I got my insert statement to work properly from multiple text boxes and a button control. What I'm looking to do is once the customer hits the button and it creates the new row in the table I want to then display the recently created record. Currently when I hit submit it creates the record, but the screen then goes back to default. I can then go to another page that I created to browse the records and it sees that the record was created properly. I would like for the insert to complete and then for the recently created record to be displayed either with a pop up, on the same page, or on a different page that needs to be created. I've tried tons of different options, but haven't been able to figure it out. So what I'll do is show you the working code and if you could give me a little help on what code I need to add to accomplish the task. Thanks. <asp:Content ID="Content2" ContentPlaceHolderID="ContentPlaceHolder1" Runat="Server"> <b /> <table style="width:100%;"> <tr> <td class="style9"> Enter Bug Title:</td> <td> <asp:textbox id="bug_title" runat="server" Width="420px" EnableViewState="False"/> </td> </tr> <tr> <td class="style9"> Bug Tester:</td> <td> <asp:TextBox ID="tester" runat="server" width="420px" EnableViewState="False"/></td> </tr> <tr> <td class="style12"> Description:</td> <td class="style13"> <asp:TextBox ID="description" runat="server" Width="420px" Height="473px" EnableViewState="False" MaxLength="200" TextMode="MultiLine"></asp:TextBox> </td> </tr> <tr> <td class="style9"> Severity:</td> <td> <asp:DropDownList ID="severity" runat="server" EnableViewState="False"> <asp:ListItem>Low</asp:ListItem> <asp:ListItem>Medium</asp:ListItem> <asp:ListItem>High</asp:ListItem> </asp:DropDownList> </td> </tr> <tr> <td class="style9"> Project Group:</td> <td> <asp:DropDownList ID="project_group" runat="server" DataSourceID="ObjectDataSource1" DataTextField="GroupName" DataValueField="GroupName" EnableViewState="False"> </asp:DropDownList> <asp:ObjectDataSource ID="ObjectDataSource1" runat="server" OldValuesParameterFormatString="original_{0}" SelectMethod="GetData" TypeName="DataSet1TableAdapters.bug_groupsTableAdapter"> </asp:ObjectDataSource> </td> </tr> <tr> <td class="style9"> </td> <td> <asp:button ID="button1" runat="server" text="Submit" OnclientClick="button1_click" /> </td> </tr> </table> And here is the code behind: Imports System.DataImports System.Data.SqlClientPartial Class Default2 Inherits System.Web.UI.Page Dim objcon As ConnectionStringSettings = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("bug_trackerConnectionString") Dim str As String = objcon.ConnectionString Dim con As New SqlConnection(Str) Dim com As New SqlCommand("", con) Protected Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles button1.Click con.Open() com.Parameters.AddWithValue("@bug_title", bug_title.Text) com.Parameters.AddWithValue("@tester", tester.Text) com.Parameters.AddWithValue("@description", description.Text) com.Parameters.AddWithValue("@project_group", project_group.Text) com.Parameters.AddWithValue("@severity", severity.Text) com.CommandText = "INSERT INTO bug_tracker (bug_title, tester, description, severity, project_group) VALUES (@bug_title, @tester, @description, @severity, @project_group)" com.ExecuteNonQuery() con.Close() End Sub
