I am a promotional DBA and need help with some code a developer wrote that errors out.
He is trying to create a role and to my knowledge there is nothing wrong with the syntax but it gives an incorrect syntax error.
CREATE ROLE 'PPS' IDENTIFIED BY 'stressboy';
error: Server: Msg 170, Level 15, State 1, Line 1
Line 1: Incorrect syntax near 'ROLE'.
we tried it with ' ' & "" and without either. I'm sure this is an easy one for you all. Thanks.
i seem to have some misunderstanding about how roles work in sql server2005. i see that i can add a role to a database(dbname->[right-click]->properties->permissions->[add ...]. THis allowsme to add either users or roles. Users can be added programmaticallyusing sp_grantdbaccess @username, but this does not allow for additionof roles to access the database (i.e., sp_grantdbaccess @rolename doesnot work).Is there some other command that is used to add a role to thedatabase's permissions list? Seems there must be since all the otherparts of the permissions chain work quite well:* sp_addrole* sp_addrolemember* grant <permissionon role::@rolenameetc.So the missing ingredient of something like sp_grantdbroleaccess iswhat I need and can't seem to find it anywhere!Thanks much for any help

We have an SSAS instance where when we run the query "select * from $system.discover_traces" the creation time in the resultset shows a different time from when we actually started the trace.
for example if we have create the trace at 3.30pm it shows 7.35 pm in the Sql server management studio resultset when we run the query "select * from $system.discover_traces".
In sql server 2000, I created some custom database roles called ProjectLeader and Developer. I would make these roles a member in the fixed database roles so that I would only have to add the user to the ProjectLeader or Developer role once and they would presto-magico have the security I wanted them to have with no unecessary mouse clicking. I'm not sure how to repeat this process in 2005? Management Studio doesn't seem to allow you to add a role as a member in another role. Is there a work around or solution for this?

I have SQL server 2005 (Developer edition) installed and I want to add a database role to a database role. It is working on my SQL 2000 server,however, when I tried to do the same thing on SQL2005, It didn't allowed me.
When I go to the Add role and then adding members to the role, the browse screen does not allow me the choice of object type Roles. It only shows me "Users".
Can someone please help me with this and provide me some information of how / what should I set to get the Roles in object types list so I can add a role to a role.

I need to create Job for SQL. This job will run every 10-15 min may be.
This job should pick latest data from MS Access and put in my SQL server database

Hi , I'm looking for a way that SQL-S7 tells me, what db-role I have.
I want to avoid that the server generates an error message when I'm not
authorized to access an information. So I could give the users only that
information they are authorized for.
May be there is a stored procedure or a template ?
Or is there an other way for controlled checking whether I have the rights
or not ?

When I assign a role to a user, the user is not actually getting the permissions defined in the role. I am forced to give the permissions directly to the user..any idea why it's ignoring the role which is assigned?

I have set up all new Roles assigned different views, table access to each user i set up.
Whilst setting this up - i could do script to generate the script.
Is there a way to get this script after the effect - some roles i forgot to generate script.
I know im being lazy - i could write the entire script out but thought maybe there a way to get this .

1) Create a project named DBExample
2) Click Add->New Item.
3) Select SQL Databse and type a name.(Ex: Database1.mdf) A database is added to the project
4) Then add table and input values.
5) Set the primary key....
My question is I parsed a text file to form a 2d string array x. How can I convert x into the database?

Whether I create new database for each or I marge the both things into one database. if i create saperate databases for each of the feature then users have to register for two times, first for forums and second for shopping. I dont want to do this...! I want users to register just for once.

I'm sorry to beat this to death but something odd is happening that I'm not quite sure I understand.
I have a number of DTS packages that when originally created with the wizard were scheduled and the jobs have run fine. Today, I created an import job that runs great but then crashes when I try to schedule it from the wizard. When I manually go in and try to schedule the DTS job, it accepts the input but does not create the job.
Since I've done this before, I'm confused about why I was able to do this previously, but not now. Permissions, etc. have not changed at all and I am the dbo for the database. The DTS package and attempted job scheduling are being done on Windows 2000 Server. SQL-Server version is 7.0.
Anybody have any ideas?

i thought of using identity property in the field so that SQL server automaticaly assigns a unique value to the record. I modified the table structure below. & tried to execute this.

Here is the problem : I can not create a DTS package in SQLServer.
=> Error description : access denied
Environment :
- Windows NT4 sp6 Server, french, logon on as "Administrator".
- SQLServer 7.0 sp4, french, logon as "sa" on the NT Server with Enterprise Manager.
- SQLServer Agent runs under an Administrator account
Why can't i create à single DTS package ? Strange, isn't it ?

One of the questions asks us to create a table that has a constraint on how many rows it can contain. I now that this is possible in some other databases, however I haven't seen a constraint that I could use on create table to limit the number of rows.. Does anyone now if this is possible?
