How do I find out what port my server is listening on? I'm trying to connect to my database locally to install Vignette Portal. And no matter what I try, nothing works. I think it is listening on port 1433. But there is no way to be sure. Should something come up if I hit localhost:1433 in my browser? Because, when I do that, nothing comes up.
Hi,I had the SQL Server Express installed on my desktop and it was working just fine. Now, I upgraded to .Net 2.0 and I had some problems with the SQL Server Express just like in post http://forums.asp.net/1070169/ShowPost.aspx.These problems were solved by using a cleanup tool but now when i try so setup the SQL Server Express 2005 i get the error:SQL Server Component Update will install the following components for SQL Server Setup:- (ok) Microsoft SQL Native Client- (error) Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup Support FilesErrors occurred during the installation:Error 1603 installing Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup Support Files.See log file for more detailed information.Fatal error during installation. The log file as lots of information such as:Product : Microsoft SQL Server Setup Support Files (English) Product Version : 9.00.1399.06 Install : Failed Log File : C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOGFilesSQLSetup0010_WS10170_Support.log Last Action : InstallFinalize Error String : The installer has encountered an unexpected error. I am not sure if this should go here it is a bit of a mixed bag, sorry if it's in the wrong spot.
I am interested to know what ideas people might have in relation to the best way to structure/setup up an app that can connect to either an SQL Server Express DB or a Compact 3.5 DB. I have a small app that can be networked but a lot of people wont want a networkable version so I dont want them downloading an app that is 4mb but requires a 35mb SQL Express install just to get it to attach to what amounts to a local DB.
Both the System.Data.SQLClient and System.Data.sqlce namespaces include classes that share at least some (I haven't checked them all) classes that inherit from the same base class i.e. SQLConnection and SQLCeConnection both inherit DBConnection from System.Data.Common. so I am wondering if there is a tricky way that I can reduce my overall code overhead (mainly things like if statements to check which DB connection we want) by up casting both connections and managing them as DBConnections but at this stage I cant come up with one.
An in important point with this is that I intend to write SQL statements that are compatable with both SQL Express and SQL Compact, my DV structure is sufficiently simple enough that I can put up with the odd "wordy" SQL statement in favour of trying to use stored procedures and views in Express and then not being able to use them in Compact.
I am having a nightmare of a time with my Sql Server 2005 Express. My computer crashed on Friday the 13th - of course. I saved all my files onto another drive and wiped out C: I brought everything back in but I started a new file for my Visual Basic projects. After asking questions I found this was a major no-no So I brought my original folder back in. This solved some of my problems I was having with Visual Studio and Visual Web, but I am continuing to have problems with Sql Server. I will explain these two problem they may be related, I don't know. When I run my Visual Website on a server I get this message:
An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file(then my file name)failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
And my second problem is when I attempt to run Sql Server Management Studio Express I get this error message:
There is no editor available for (then my file name) .mdf
Make sure the application for file type(.mdf)is installed.
During an install of SQL Server 2005 Express setting the sa password does not work consistently. The install is being run as administrator and I am using an .ini file to pass the settings,
and while most times it works correctly, occasionally, maybe 4 out of 10 times it fails to set the password and I have been unable to find any warnings or errors in the logs it generates.
We are coming up on release and this is causing us some real problems. Does anyone have any ideas, something I could look at?
sometimes the sa password is set correctly, while other times it is not. There does not appear to be any particular environment or system setting when it fails vs. when it works.
We are coming up on a release date and this is causing us a serious problem. Can anyone help?
I'm a newbie to Reporting Services so please forgive my ignorance...
I've recently installed SQL Server Express 2005 with Reporting Services on my Vista Business Notebook (with no network connections) and have installed VS C# Express as well as the Business Intelligence Studio to create reports.
My C# application can connect to SQL Server fine, however, the reports I created with Business Studio refuses to deploy to the server due to the following reason:
"The permissions granted to user 'localhostJenny' are insufficient for performing this operation".
I find this odd as I've been able to deploy reports on my other Windows XP machine (with SQL Server Express) no probs at all. Additionally, I cannot see the 'Site settings' link within Report Manager (Web) that I'd normally get with an admin account (i.e. on my Win. XP machine). Various sources indicate that my account has insufficient access rights to view this.
Having browsed through seemingly endless blogs and forums, I suspect that my local account has not been configured to access the Report Manager web client to publish, manage and administer the site.
I have tried the surface area tool for SQL Server, but I suspect that this is relevant only to SQL Server DB access and management. Adding an administrator here does nothing.
The question is, how can I grant access to myself (local account) to allow me to publish reports via business studio, and at the same time - administer Report Manager Site Settings - on my vista notebook??
I would be extremely grateful for any help on this matter - I've tried ceaseless reinstallations, but to no avail!
Hi, I am running a project that has a custom membership flow. I need to use the local SQL Express Membership instead. In orderer to achieve this, I have added the following lines in my web.config: in the membership section: <add name="AspNetSqlMembershipProvider" type="System.Web.Security.SqlMembershipProvider, System.Web, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a" connectionStringName="LocalSqlServer" enablePasswordRetrieval="false" enablePasswordReset="true" requiresQuestionAndAnswer="true" applicationName="/" requiresUniqueEmail="false" passwordFormat="Hashed" maxInvalidPasswordAttempts="5" passwordAttemptWindow="10" passwordStrengthRegularExpression="" /> in the connectionStrings section:<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="data source=.SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=SSPI;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|aspnetdb.mdf;User Instance=true" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
Problem : When I am opening ASP.NET Configuration > Security I have the following error message: There is a problem with your selected data store. This can be caused by an invalid server name or credentials, or by insufficient permission. It can also be caused by the role manager feature not being enabled. Click the button below to be redirected to a page where you can choose a new data store. The following message may help in diagnosing the problem: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
Does anyone know of a good set of instructions for correctly configuring a sql express server for web applications (the sql server and web server are on different machines). I can see the SQL server from my web server, but only using the sa account and I would like to know how I should setup another user and what rights to give this user.
I've been using SQL Serer 2000 or SQL Server 2005 (external) for my website and I have it configured through the aspnet_regsql tool. The hosting company doesn't offer access to SQL Server to configure the database. So I thought I'd use SQL Express. Only problem is now I can use the exe to set up this db.
Does anyone know of a good way to configure this database for my website?
I have a vm machine running SQL Express. So as to centralise my data, on the host machine I have a folder with all my data. This folder is shared. In the vm machine I have set up mapped to this folder, so it is visible within in. I can add/remove from the folder in explorer so the permissions look okay up to there.
However, when I go into SQL Express and attempt to restore from a backup into a DB, I cannot see the folder in the folder list presented. When I try and force the connection through the mapped drive letter or unc name, the server fails with a you do not have permissions.
From my reading it looks like I have got a network service account set up but, when I look at the logins in SQL Express there doesn't appear to be such an account.
Could someone either a) point me in the right direction if the netowrk service account is not the way to go b) tell me how to set up a netowrk service account with the correct privileges to enable me to read /write this mapped folder.
I am having trouble installing sql express from a command line on an XP o/s other than English, I know French and German have the problem I suspect this is caused by setting the sql account to ="NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM" my guess is that this is a localized string.
I get the following error
SQL Server Setup could not validate the service accounts. Either the service accounts have not been provided for all of the services being installed, or the specified username or password is incorrect. For each service, specify a valid username, password, and domain, or specify a built-in system account.
In my ASP.NET app, I'm executing a stored procedure via a SQLCommand the searches a customer database. I believe the default timeout is 90 seconds. I'm curious of what happens to the SQL Server Stored Procedure after timing out from the ASP.NET application. Does it timeout at the same time or do you have to set up a value in SQL Server?
I have a Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise server which I need to set up as a linked server in SQL Server 2005. The Sybase server is version 12.5.2, and the Sybase ODBC driver version is 4.20.00.67. I have already installed the Sybase client software on the server.
I also created a SystemDSN on the SQL Server to connect to the Sybase server. I tested the connection and it was able to connect.
I ran the following code to create the linked server:
I then ran sp_tables_ex to make sure I could view the tables in the Sybase database. Here is the error message I get:
<code>
OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "LinkedServerName" returned message "[DataDirect][ODBC Sybase Wire Protocol driver]Error parsing connect string at offset 13. ".
Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_tables_ex, Line 41

What is the Difference between the SQL Server Express Bundled with C#/VB VS the downloadable SQL Server Express SP1 with advanced Services?
I installed C# with SQL Server Express, however I wanted to add the Full Text Searching and the SQL Server Management Studio Express, so I downloaded and installed the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services SP1. When I installed it over top of my current installation, it complained of version mismatching, and then C# failed to recognize that I had SQL 2005 Express installed at all.
What I'd like to know is, which version is more current (they have to be different, they had different version numbers, one was 9.xx.xxxx the other was 2005.9.xx.xxxx) The one bundled with C#, or the SP1 downloadable one.
Firstly, I want to be up todate as far as security patches, and Secondly, how do I add the full text searching and SSMSE to the one bundled with C# without breaking it.
Q1: Does Sql Server 2005 Express support Web/Internet to other SQL Server 2005 Express Clients or does it have to Synch across the internet to a fully installed setup SQL Server 2005 with IIS?
Q2: Does SQL Server 2005 Express support Direct Replication between other SQL Server 2005 Express clients?
I have a setup where I need to replicate the database which is actually subscribing from another database. The current setup is all in SQL Server 2000. I need to now setup a Distrbutor on a SQL server 2005 and publish the database using this distributor to another server on SQL server 2000.
Has anybody done this before. If yes what will I need to check. Can you please let me know :-
1) SQL Server 2000 which SP should be installed to support this enviroment.
2) SQL Server 2005 which SP should be installed to support this environment.
I downloaded the SSEUtilSetup.EXE and extracted the SSEUtil.exe to a folder of C:drive of my PC that is Windows XP Pro. I plan to learn the CLR programming via user-instance of SQL Server Express. I need to have SQL Server Express Utility installed. Please help and tell me how I can install SSEUtil.exe in my PC and how I use it to interact with SQL Server Express.
Hello, Iam new at this SQL stuff and want to setup an SQL Server at work and need to know what do i need to use this software. I have a EVAL version of 6.5 and was told you need MSACCES or Visual Basic. Is there anything else that i need to use this? Thanks!!
What is the best way to set up a sql server db that will be accessed via web(asp/ado) and windows (vb/ado) environemnts. I am concerned with security and authentication.
I am working with 3 sql 7.0 servers (Servers A, B, C) and am trying to create a trace via profiler to run against server B.
Every trace that I create keeps pointing to server A even though I have server B defined in the properties of the trace - (when I edit the trace properties it REALLY does show server B). I have server B defined in the screen where you 'Select the SQL Server to run the trace on'. I even used the wizard to run one of the canned traces and it still points to server A. Every trace I set up runs against server A. Can anyone think of what the heck I'm doin' wrong? Is is a configuration setting somewhere?
Does anyone know the best way to set up NT security. It seems a little confusing as to how to set up NT groups and assign permissions (where do the roles come into it?).
There has been a lot of discussion about moving single databases or devices in same server. Can someone suggest the most simplest method to set up a identical server with all the logins, permissions and password etc?
Building a new server with sp_help_revdatabase and dumps/loads is relatively easy but moving the master is confusing to me. I should run the new server and databases for a little testing period (with diffrent server name, of course) and then go live by dropping the old and by adding the new. I remember someone said that this would be as easy as copying master.dat to new machine (when servers are identical), any experience or other suggestions?
 I am having trouble setting my SQL databases up as analysis services databases in SQL Server '05. Does anyone know how to help me???? I have lots of cubes to build, but I can't get the datasources there. Thanks much for any advice. mbunch@bighammer.com
I am installing my application thru Installshield Professional 5. Howto know whether MS SQL Server is installed or not on the machine onwhich i am installing my application. What is the registry key thruwhich we can find this.
I am soon to be setting up a new server that is to have SQL Server 2005 on it.
The server has 2 x Quad Core Xeon CPUs, 16Gb of RAM and 2x73Gb HDDs in RAID1 configuration - the whole running under Windows Server 2003 x64. (The data will be on an external RAID disk array, so the 73Gb is just for the O/S and utils.)
I was reading that Windows will, by default, create a page file of (RAM size) + 1Mb, though my old-school education says use a page file of 1.5 times the RAM size. Then again, 16Gb is a whole pile of RAM and do I really want a page file of 24Gb when I only have 73Gb of HD space..? Is it worth partitioning the HDD into two or just leave it whole?
I'm looking for guidance from knowledgeable types (that's you chaps) who could offer advice on how best to implement SQL Server on a system of this spec.
I've also thought about assigning different processor affinitie to Analysis Services and the Database Engine - does anyone have any strong thoughts either way on the benefits of this?
