Hiding Secret Columns From Users

Nov 23, 2005

Hi,
On my SQL Server 2000, I have a table of data (tblAllData) containing a
number of columns, some of which are 'secret'.
I have to let some users access the database using ODBC from an Excel
sheet, and I would like that they do not know at all that the columns exist.
I tried creating a view for them (qryAllData) that only selects the
columns that should be visible, but when the creating the
ODBC-connection, both the query and the underlying table shows up.
If I select the table as datasource, the query-builder in excel shows a
list of all the columns, including the secret ones. If I try selecting
then, of course, an error occurs.

I would like either that the columns for the table don't show or that
the table does not show at all - and only reveals the existence of the
view to the odbc-client.
Is that possible?

Here's what I tried so far:

<pre>
USE DbAllData
sp_addlogin @loginame='ODBCAccess', @passwd='ODBCAccess', @defdb='DbAllData'
sp_grantdbaccess 'ODBCAccess'
sp_addrolemember @rolename = db_denydatawriter, @membername = ODBCAccess

REVOKE ALL FROM ODBCAccess
DENY SELECT ON dbo.syscolumns TO ODBCAccess
DENY SELECT ON dbo.syscomments TO ODBCAccess
DENY SELECT ON dbo.sysdepends TO ODBCAccess
DENY SELECT ON dbo.sysfilegroups TO ODBCAccess
DENY SELECT ON dbo.sysfiles TO ODBCAccess
DENY SELECT ON dbo.sysfiles1 TO ODBCAccess
DENY SELECT ON dbo.sysforeignkeys TO ODBCAccess
DENY SELECT ON dbo.sysfulltextcatalogs TO ODBCAccess
DENY SELECT ON dbo.sysfulltextnotify TO ODBCAccess
DENY SELECT ON dbo.sysindexes TO ODBCAccess
DENY SELECT ON dbo.sysindexkeys TO ODBCAccess
DENY SELECT ON dbo.sysmembers TO ODBCAccess
DENY SELECT ON dbo.sysobjects TO ODBCAccess
DENY SELECT ON dbo.syspermissions TO ODBCAccess
DENY SELECT ON dbo.sysproperties TO ODBCAccess
DENY SELECT ON dbo.sysprotects TO ODBCAccess
DENY SELECT ON dbo.sysreferences TO ODBCAccess
DENY SELECT ON dbo.systypes TO ODBCAccess
DENY SELECT ON dbo.sysusers TO ODBCAccess
--allow selecting
GRANT SELECT (idx, col1, col2) ON tblAllData TO ODBCAccess
GRANT SELECT ON qryAllData TO ODBCAccess
</pre>

TIA,
M

Table Not Centering After Hiding Two Of Its Columns

Dec 31, 2007

I have a table with 7 columns and it centers perfectly on my report. However, based on what the user selects when running this report, two of the columns can end up hiding. When I hide these two columns, which happen to be in the middle of the table, the table then appears to be left aligned because two of the columns are now gone so everything shifts.

The only reason its centered with 7 columns is because I have streteched all the columns out to certain sizes to make everything fit on the page and this is what is lost when 2 of those columns are dynamically removed.

Is there a way to keep everything centered even with these two columns gone? Is there a better way to ensure centering now matter how many columns exist in a table?

Thanks,
Flea

Dynamically Hiding Columns In A Matrix Report

Mar 5, 2008

Hi,

I am wondering if someone has some experience with hiding columns in a Matrix report. I have got two details columns: "Yr to Yr Credits Growth€? and "Yr to Yr Credits Growth %" and those two columns return only one value "N/A" for the earliest year since there is nothing to compare to. Thus, I don't really need them for the earliest year. On top of detail columns, I have got three matrix groups: matrix1-Year, matrix1-Quarter and matrix-Date. Once those two detail columns are hidden, I would like obviously resize (shrink) those three matrix groups columns to reflect the fact that the detail columns were hidden.

Thanks!

Hiding Columns -White Space At End Of The Table*****Extremely Urgent

Mar 27, 2008

Hello everyone,
In reports ,My customer requirement is to display column based on selected criteria in UI .
The columns which are not selected by him will hide.
for that we kept an expression in Visibility --> Hide

Code Snippet
= NOT Parameters!Parameters.Value.ToString().Contains("Name")

then coming to HTML Report
It is working fine,but white space coming at end of the Table.
can't we supress the white space?
The white space width is exactly the width of the column which is hidden.
My designing in layout is wrong?
Else is that Problem with the SSRS?
Experts Please let me Know!!!!
Give me Solution!!!
Customer is strictly focusing on that requirement.

***Note: white Space is Some what Acceptable.But My Reports are very big like 45 columns around.When he selects 10 out of 45 then you can assume how much space is coming????????****

Searching Encrypted Data; Using MAC Secret Data

Aug 10, 2006

I just finished reading an article on how to search encrypted data efficiently and they suggested creating a new column with a Message Auhtentication Code. To be honest, reading the aritcle makes my head hurt. I can hardly understand what they were doing myself and I can't begin to explain it to a developer.

Are there any easier ways to search encrypted columns for a speciifc match? If not, does any have some stored procs that implement this messy MAC stuff?

Reporting Services :: Adding (new) Child Domain Users To SSRS As System Users?

Jul 28, 2015

We have an existing SSRS server, and have just created a new child domain. We'll be migrating users from the parent to the child, and want to add the users of that new domain with access to SSRS. In the parent domain they are able to access, but after migration with the child domain account, they cannot.

I have added the group CHILDDomain Users with a system user role on SSRS, and PARENTDomain Users was already there.

Is there any additional step I should/could take to get this active?

Stored Procedure To Get All Users Or All Users Of A Specific Country

hi alli've got two tables called "webusers" (id, name, fk_country) and "countries" (id, name)
at the meantime, i've a search-page where i can fill a form to search users. in the dropdown to select the country i included an option which is called "all countries".
now the problem is: how can i make a stored procedure that makes a restriction to the fk_country depending on the submitted fk_country parameter?it should be something like
SELECT * FROM webusers(if @fk_country > 0, which is the value for "all countries"){    WHERE fk_country = @fk_country}
who has an idea how to solve this problem?

MS SQL Hiding Behind Access

Dec 7, 2005

Hi guys

We have a helpdesk application which is based on an MS SQL database, and which runs with a rather large and complicated C# based interface. We don't have the code for this, so we can't customise it. Long story short, what we want is to create an interface in Access (or similar) which accesses the same database as the helpdesk suite, and allows reading AND writing, and some rather complex operations (which SHOULD be fairly simple to do in SQL).

Unfortunately, I have been given this project, and I know about as much about Access and SQL as I do about Ghengis Khan's fashion sense.

I will follow with more information as required, but I'm going to need a lot of help with this one. First things first, is Access the way to do this? Is it going to be easier to create a new Access DB and synchronise it with the SQL, instead of both applications using the same database?

The only way I can get Access to interrogate the SQL database is to create a Data Access Page - is this the correct starting point? The only problem is that this seems to only offer HTML, and is far from being a friendly interface, at least not to me.

I know that I currently have no grounding in physics and I'm trying to build a space station, but any advice that you could give me would be much appreciated.

Thanks guys!

Hiding The DB Design.

I am going to install my application at my Client's place.

I do not want them to know about my DB design and also i have a lot of master information that I dont want the Client to view.

The Client insists that he would have the Super Administrator user ids and passwords (ie. "sa" - user).

Is there any way i can encrypt my DB design and the data in the DB.

Or is there any other way of restricting the Client from viewing my DB design and data???

Hiding A Table

Feb 28, 2008

Hi,

I am designing a report with a few tables in it which i selectively want to hide if there is no data to display in them.
The tables hide themselves but leave behind a big void without compressing the fields beneath them.

Is there anyway to make sure that the tables are hidden and it compresses the space which it would have otherwise occupied?

The two methods i have tried are:

1. Put an expression in the visibility property and set it to true if the row count is zero
2. set the expression in the NoRows property to =""

(both without luck)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ash

Hiding Parameters

Jan 11, 2008

Hi There,

I am fairly new at RS, and have a question about showing/hiding parameters :

What i would like to do is have one report, with the parameters :

Report By : (Date/Week)
Buisiness Stream : (Spares/OEM)
Start Date : (Date)
End Date : (Date)
Start Week : (Start Week Num)

End Week : (End Week Num)

What I would like to do is show the 'Start Date' and 'End Date' when the Report By value = Date

OR

Show the 'Start Week' and 'End Week' parameter when Report By value = Week.

Can someone help me with this?

Thanks

P.S. If its not possible to hide the fields, could i grey them out??

In the expression for visibility, we have the following:

When the report runs we get the following error: "The input string was not in the correct format."

Has anybody seen this before?

Hiding Groups

May 1, 2008

I know how to hide groups using Expressions that use parameters that can be passed in, but can you hide groups that are inside other groups. Here is my situation. Our company has different organization levels. On reports the users want to select which organization levels they want to see the #s for. So I set up groups for each org level like so....

Org Level 1
Org Level 2
Org Level 3

The data results are like so

Org Level 1 Org Level 2 Org Level 3 Category $ Amount
USA Midwest Kansas 1 500.00
USA Northeast Maine 1 200.00

And I sum the $ Amount Per Category for each Org Level using grouping in the report.

Then based on the selections they make it hides the org levels they don't need to see. The issue is that the report will not show org level 2 or org level 3 if org level 1 is not visible, and org level 3 can't be visible if org level 2 isn't visible, etc.....Anyone know a solution to this situation, I know this has had to have come up.

Thanks,
Adam

RS2k Issue: PDF Exporting Report With Hidden Columns, Stretches Visible Columns And Misplaces Columns On Spanned Page

Dec 13, 2007

Hello:

I am running into an issue with RS2k PDF export.

Case: Exporting Report to PDF/Printing/TIFF
Report: Contains 1 table with 19 Columns. 1 column is static, the other 18 are visible at the users descretion. Report when printed/exported to pdf spans 2 pages naturally, 16 on the first page, 3 on the second, and the column widths have been adjusted to provide a perfect page span .

User A elects to hide two of the columns, and show the rest. The report complies and the viewable version is perfect, the excel export is perfect.. the PDF export on the first page causes every fith column, starting with the last column that was hidden to be expanded to take up additional width. On the spanned page, it renders the first column on that page correctly, then there is a white space gap equal to the width of the hidden columns and then the rest of the cells show with the last column expanded to take up the same width that the original 2 columns were going to take up, plus its width.

We have tried several different settings to see if it helps this issue or makes it worse. So far cangrow/canshrink/keep together have made no impact. It is not possible to increase the page size due to limited page size selection availablility for the client. There are far too many combinations of what the user can elect to show or hide to put together different tables to show and hide on the same report to remove this effect.

Any help or suggestion on this issue would be appreciated

Hiding Parameter Prompts

Jan 24, 2008

Hello everyone,

I have a request to hide certain parameters in a report based on the current user logged into our web based report viewer using the ReportViewer control fo asp.net.

I am doing the standard stuff required to display the report as shown below.

Code Snippet
rptViewer.ServerReport.ReportServerUrl = new Uri("http://172.17.144.26/ReportServer"); // new Uri(MINETSecurity.WebSettings.WebServerPath, UriKind.Absolute);
rptViewer.ServerReport.ReportPath = ReportName;
rptViewer.ServerReport.DisplayName = "Report1";
rptViewer.ServerReport.ReportServerCredentials = new CustomReportCredentials("myUsername", "myPassword", "myDomain");

Now that i have loaded the report into the viewer i illiterate through the report parameters looking for the ones which the specified user should not see as show below.

Code Snippet
ReportParameterInfoCollection MyReportParams = rptViewer.ServerReport.GetParameters();
foreach (ReportParameterInfo MyParameter in MyReportParams)
{
// returns a value from a custom class which is a predefined value for this user based on the current user logged into the website
string Value = CustomParameterValues.ToString(GlobalUserSettings.CurrentUser.CustomValueList);
if(Value != "") MyParameter.PromptUser = false;
}

Here is where the promblem lies, when i try to set the value of PromptUser i get the following compiler error.

Property or indexer 'Microsoft.Reporting.WebForms.ReportParameterInfo.PromptUser' cannot be assigned to -- its is read only

Is there anything i can do to set certain parameters invisible to the user and set there value myself. I know i could create 2 seperate reports and set the PromptUser value in the designer but i dont really want to be duplicating reports just to hide or show parameters.

I have tried using the SetParameters method of the ReportViewer component to pass the value of the parameters that should be hidden and even set the visible property to false, but it dosn't seem to work.

Any help here would be appreciated.

Cheers
Scott Blood
