High-level Reporting Services Questions.

Mar 11, 2008

Hello, we have a customer-facing ASP.NET web reporting application that allows the user to a). select a report b). make report settings (filter, sort, include/exclude columns), and c). run the report. An Oracle stored proc is used to return the data into a DataSet. Today the output is displayed in a bound, paginated DataGrid.

We€™d like to €˜plug-in€™ Reporting Services for improved formatting, grouping, matrix reporting, drilldown, graphics, etc.. I have read through the online docs, examples, and tutorials but have not found the exact (high-level) information I€™m looking for.

We need to keep our report settings page, Oracle SP architecture, etc... Is there a way to simply hand off a dynamically created DataSet to a report for display €“ like binding to the DataGrid? The data (query) would be specific to a report but columns can be selected/unselected for display.
In terms of deployment, is it necessary to install SQL Server in each environment (DEV-Integration, QA, PROD) to support Reporting Services? Since we are essentially an Oracle shop, this could be a tough sell. Is it possible to develop the report on a dev workstation (perhaps with SQL Server), and then publish to a web server where SQL Server is not installed?

These are obviously high-level questions - any help will be appreciated (examples, how-to's, etc..) €“ thanks in advance.
-Bill

SQL 2012 :: High Memory Usage On Idle Reporting Services

Aug 25, 2015

I know I should probably be posting this in the RS section but I have a Win 2008 R2 server and RS 2012 along with SSIS and Database server installed. I also have SQL 2005 instance with Sql 2005 SSIS running on the server.

I saw that Reporting services was consuming 9gb of ram a few days ago with no published reports. It's just a default install.

So I investigated the settings and the document: [URL]......

I added this section to the reportserver.config file to restrict memory usage

<WorkingSetMaximum>512000</WorkingSetMaximum>
<WorkingSetMinimum>128000</WorkingSetMinimum>

Any example altering the reportserver.config file in your standard build of sql server reporting services?

SQL 2012 :: High Memory Utilization For Reporting Services In AlwaysOn Mode?

Mar 26, 2015

We have two server configured in always on mode .

windows is sql server 2012 64 bit edition and sql server is 2012 64 bit edition.

RAM installed on both server is around 65 gb of which 49 gb is max server memory allocated for sql services on both servers.

database related to reporting services are also in always on group .

We have also configured for reporting services and both are running on their respecting server.

Issue is on primary server reporting service is using almost 7 gb while on secondary it is using 10 gb even when there are 5 reports and its used within offices .

what issue and how to check why ssrs is using high memory..

any query , perfmon counters

reports are randomly used at client side

i have checked memory utilization through task manger..

Questions About Reporting Services....

Mar 31, 2007

Hi all. I have many concerns on reporting services. Hope you help me alot explaining as I fully undestand it.

1. I am new in reporting services. Anybody can tell me the BIG difference of SQL SP1 and SP2?

2. Can anyone give the SHARED FUNCTION/ aggregate method not being supported by the aggregate functions. (These are the methods written in REPORT CODE)...

3.I have REPORTS(Business Intelligent Project) on my local machine hosted to the report services of the MACHINE SERVER. Then, reports are shown in REPORT VIEWER in my C# WINDOWS application project. My question is : How can other workstations run the same reports(Reports that I made)? We are using Team Foundation Server(TFS) to share the REPORTS and C# application project. I not yet tried to share the report, however I am expecting the report will work in other workstation. Is it?

4. Reporting services will only run in IIS, right? and you need first to RUN the SQL MANAGER, right? I have 10 workstations and 1 SERVER MACHINE. I made the SERVER MACHINE as the report server. Am I doing right? or Am I thinking the right idea/approach? Give me guidance on this...

5. What are the advantages of the reports being hosted to the reporting services? or shall i say, what is the difference of the crystal report to the reports hosted to the reporting services.

.:. Edit...(Added)

6. Can someone tell how to set the datasourcecredential in my c# windows application? I see the methods in MSDN but I really don't know how to use the methods.

7. How to set the reports directly to PRINT LAYOUT MODE if I preview it?

Thanks.

SQL Server Reporting Services Questions

Nov 8, 2004

I've installed SQL Server Reporting Services and designed few useful reports on local workstation, now I want to deploy those on the production reporting server.

I have the following questions:

1) We have some demo databases with the similar structure so the the same report would fit all the demos.
Is there any way to change the connecting string for the report programmatically without recreating report each time ? May be there is a way to pass database name to the report (encrypted) ? Is there any way to

2) I'd like to be able to protect those reports from unauthorised users ? Is there any way of doing that ? Is there any way to set up security on the base of folder anf for the whole group of reports ?

Thanks

Reporting Services - A Couple General Questions

Mar 14, 2008

A couple questions about SQL Server Reporting Services:
 1. Can it be used for other data sources besides SQL Server (Oracle db, XML files, via APIs, etc.)?
2. Can it do ad hoc reporting? I like the "universes" that the SAP Business Objects product allows. Does Reporting Services have something like this, to provide a simplified view that non-technical business users can use to create their own reports? Or is Reporting Services just the equivalent to Crystal Reports?

(I wanted to post this in the general MSDN forum for SQL Server, but I can never log in there for some reason.)

Cell Level Security And Reporting Services.

May 27, 2008

Hopefully, someone has figured this out:

I've implemented and tested cell level security on the cube. It's testing certain level conditions, and returns #N/A (as normal) when the user is not supposed to see the cell value. Since I always use .FormattedValue in my reports, works fine in Report Services (and Excel and ProClarity, etc.)

Here's the problem:

When RS parameters encounter this situation, the parameter dataset "breaks" (The following system error occurred: Type mismatch.) This is happening, because the parameter fields (ParameterValue, ParameterCaption, ParameterLevel) are being replaced by #N/A, due to the cell level security. This is happening, because these are actually defined as members, and hence passing through cell level security.

What I need to do is find a way to have these specific members bypass the cell level security, so that the parameter datasets still work. (Failing that, a new way of specifying parameters in MSRS.)

I've tried the following a a cell level security rule, but it doesn't seem to work:

[Measures].CurrentMember is [Measures].[ParameterValue] or [Measures].CurrentMember is [Measures].[ParameterCaption] or
[Measures].CurrentMember is [Measures].[ParameterLevel] or
[Measures].[Is Visible]

Any ideas?

High Level Of Login/sec

Jun 22, 2006

Hi All

Perfmon shows max 3900 login/sec and avg is 1500.

ASP.NET v 2.0 application uses this SQL 2005 server consists of 10 webservers. Max Pool Size on each was changed today to 300 (was default so I suppose - 100) and it didnt change logins/sec graph at all. Application uses SqlConnection object from ADO.NET v 2.0 obviously.

Can someone explain - what could be reasonable explanation - is load that high? Do we need 3000 as Max Pool Size? (I cant imagine what could be maximum recommended size of pool for W2003 32-bit server)

Thank you

Reporting Services :: How To Add Row Level Total In A Table / Matrix In SSRS Report

May 20, 2015

I have a dataset with weekly salary of multiple employees of same grade from different dpt. We are not going to show the report based on employ. The report will be showing data based on Employee grade and their department.

Grade         Dpt        wk1          wk2          wk3       wk4
manager     hr          3000         2500         1000       2000
senior          hr          1300         1500         1300       1600
manager     hr          2500         2300         2100       3000

We need to show the result by grouping grade and dpt. So the Wk1 rate will be the sum of (3000+2500).

Grade        Dpt         wk1           wk2         wk3      wk4      Total
manager    hr           5500         4800        3100       5000       18400 (how to find???)
senior        hr            1300         1500        1300       1600       5700(??)
Total                        6800         6300       4400        6600       24100(??)

How to find the total for each row on the right most end ?

Writing Reports/Extracting Data/Header Info/Reporting Services (2 Questions Really)

Aug 13, 2007

I have a program where I have to do a weekly data upload of approx 1,500 records. I've written the sql, but need to know how I can add static header text to the SQL statement.the text I need in the header is Reportname(Static  string) + #rows (Rowcount of the sql,  int) + department (String static) I'm planning on writing it and saving it as a package, then schedule it to run every Friday at 5:00.  But I have been reading a little on Reporting Services and wonder if people think it' might be the way to go? Is it a whole new area of security issues? Or is it worth installing and learning? I will have more and more reports I need to write that will increase in complexity, and want to know if I want to keep writing querys by hand, or use reporting services. Thanks in advance! Dan

What Are The High Level Considerations For 24x7 Installations?

Feb 13, 2008

in a prior "legacy" life we couldn't imagine 24x7 implementations because it was important to 1) reorganize databases periodically to remove fragmentation that adversely affected performance and 2) back up databases just in case.

In a 24x7 SQL Server 2005 implementation, high level only, how are these and other maintenance related things accomplished with confidence?

I dont think SQL cleanses its own page splits unsolicited. Are DBAs totally reliant on logs in full recovery installations where db must be up 24x7? What if the devices those logs sit on fail? What if the logs become too large? Is it likely that if you want 24x7 you're looking at Enterrise Edition only?

I'm totally aware of and confident in the sliding window partitioning thing but it seems to me there must be more out there in terms of periodic, more frequent maintenance activity.

Reporting Services :: SSRS 2008 - Report Builder Download To Domain Level Clients Not Working

Feb 5, 2010

I have created a new SSRS Server and done all of the basic security setup for the site but I am having trouble with client machine access...At first I had an issue with being able to access report manager from any client and ended up having to shut off windows authentication on the client IE settings to get it to work.  Now I am trying to run Report Builder from a client machine and it will not download. The client machine is on the same domain and my user id is set as an administrator within SSRS and as a local admin on the 2008 server.

I had the thought that without windows auth in the browser maybe it can't permit me access to the application but if I turn it on I can't get to it to download it.  I have set Full Control rights to the folder as well. Most of the info out there is for 2005 and that uses IIS to host the pages where as 2008 does not. Here is the details of the error:

The SSE Provider Did Not Find The Database File Specified In The Connection String. At The Configured Trust Level (below High Trust Level), The SSE Provider Can Not Automatically Create The Database File.

Aug 31, 2007

The problem that I am having is that with Visual Web Developer I am creating a webpage and having it directly put online, so for example when I start a new ASP.NET page, I select the location to be HTTP, with the location http://MYWEBSERVER/Website   and for the language and Visual BasicI notice a couple of things, first that there is no longer a a link under the Main toolbar "Website" selection called the ASP.NET configuration.  So how can I configure what I want to have users be able to do?  It seems that this choice is only available if I am building the ASP.NET page on my "localhost".  So that is the first problem.  So I am able to get the pages to work, atleast the things such as the textboxes to show up etc, (Even things as advanced as the "Login" box).  How ever when I try to get someone to try to login  I am taken to a page that has an server error.  The error is:
"The SSE Provider did not find the database file specified in the connection string. At the configured trust level (below High trust level), the SSE provider can not automatically create the database file. "
The Stack Trace Errors are at the bottom.  I think this is happening because the automatically generated databases are not getting built online as they are on my computer.  On my computer I have MSSQL express.  So either the databases are not getting built for some reason, (and I think that is the case as I don't see any in the folder).  So I think that somehow I have to create a database on my server, and then somehow configure the ASP.NET file, perhaps in the Web.Config file to look for that new database.  Is this the correct methodology?   Is there some simpler way that I can just somehow upload things as they are and have them work correctly on my server?   The error says that either the Server did not find the database or that the trust level was insufficient.  I don't think that is it as I just looked again and I don't see any .MDF files.  So how would I go about getting this to work right? Is there a way to do this with MySQL also?  So that I don't have to use MSSQL?  My server only allows 1 DataBase for that.
Thanks and I hope my question makes sense.  It is basically how can I get it to be able to create and check users etc. online?

Reporting Services :: See Report-Level Variables In Report Builder 3.0

Is there a way to see Report-Level variables in Report Builder 3.0?  Also, just as a feedback, it would be really nice if there were a way to see and easily access all of the variables used in a report from one location instead of going to the dataset, the report, and then to the individual groups (if needed) to see the variables.  Also, it would be very useful if Group-level variables can show up in the Expression Builder as well.

Migrate From 32bit 2000 Reporting Services To 2005 64bit Reporting Services

Mar 22, 2008

Hello,

I am trying to migrate my reports from SQL server 2000 reporting services 32bit to 2005 64bit. I am following the migration steps that MS specified.
Restored my Reportserver and ReportserverTempDB databases
Then I was using the configure Report services to upgrade these databases but I always end up getting the follwoing exception when I run the upgrade on the "Database Setup" configuration for 'ReportServerTempDB' database
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Could not locate entry in sysdatabases for database 'ReportServerTempDBTempDB'. No entry found with that name. Make sure that the name is entered correctly.
at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection)
at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlInternalConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection)
at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParser.ThrowExceptionAndWarning(TdsParserStateObject stateObj)
at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParser.Run(RunBehavior runBehavior, SqlCommand cmdHandler, SqlDataReader dataStream, BulkCopySimpleResultSet bulkCopyHandler, TdsParserStateObject stateObj)
at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.RunExecuteNonQueryTds(String methodName, Boolean async)
at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.InternalExecuteNonQuery(DbAsyncResult result, String methodName, Boolean sendToPipe)
at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()
at Microsoft.ReportingServices.Common.DBUtils.ApplyScript(String connectionString, String script)
at ReportServicesConfigUI.SqlClientTools.SqlTools.ApplyScript(String connectionString, String script)

It's driving me crazy, why is it looking for 'ReportServerTempDBTempDB' in the catalog instead of 'ReportServerTempDB'?
Is it possible to migrate from 32bit to 64bit?

Any help is appreciated

High Availability To High Protection Without Reconfiguring Mirroring

Hi,

Is there a way to configure mirroring to go from High Availability to High Protection without having to reconfigure Database Mirroring? Using the interface in Management Studio, I can change the configuration option to High Performance, but not High Protection despite both of them being Synchronous.

If not, what are the recommended steps to configure the mirror once it already has been configured? Is just like initially setting up the mirror or would there be any shortcuts I could take? If I stop the mirroring and remove the witness, will the High Protection option be available?

Thanks,

High Safety Changed To High Performance After Fail Over ?

Mar 6, 2008

Hi There

I realise this is a stupid quesiton but i cannot really find any confirmation of this in BOL.

If you are running High Safety with automatic failover, when failover occurs does this automatically change to High Performance mode. SInce for failover to occur something has happen with the primary , it will be impossible to commit transactions on the new primary and mirror asyncronously since 1 of them is no longer available.

So am i correct in assuming that automatic failover also automatically changes the mode to High Performacne for that session?

Compatibility Of SQL Express Reporting Services With SQL 2000 Reporting Services

Dec 6, 2006

I'm attempting to obtain a cost effective solution for my existing customers to develop reports on their SQL 2000 Server installations using their Reporting Services 2000. With products like Visual Basic.NET 2003 becoming almost impossible to obtain, I have at least one customer who is running into a dead end.

One option possibly is the SQL Express with Advanced Services download, which has Reporting Services. My questions are as follows:

Can the report designer component of SQL Express Reporting Services be configured to connect to an external database (which would happen to be a SQL 2000 database) to establish its datasets?
Does the resultant designed report end up in an RDL file? If the customer published this report via the Reporting Services 2000 Report Manager, would the report be able to run?

Sorry for asking a question like this that I could probably answer on my own, but my customer needed this answer yesterday. I have scoured the web and microsoft sites - and posted a question on the official SQL Reporting Services cateogy ... in an attempt to answer the basic question of how to design reports for Reporting Services 2000 in the absence of Visual Basic.NET 2003 (or other .NET 2003 tools) with no success.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Few Questions Regarding SQL Reporting Service 2005. (PageBreak)

Dec 9, 2007

Hi,

During last year, I developed more than 200 Reports using SQL Reporting Service. It is really fantastic and in many ways it has reduced lot of work.

But still I am not able to find out solution of following issues,

1) Where to set portrait or landscape printing mode? It takes based on paper size, if 8.5 x 11 then portrait else landscape.
Now I want to set myself in report irrespective of page size then HOW TO DO IT?
2) I want to set Height, Width and Merge cells options based on Expression like many other things we do, ex. Font, Text Align, Visibility, etc€¦ HOW TO DO IT?
3) I am not able to find out option for Vertical Cell merging? Is it available or is there any trick?
4) If entire group or table can be printed within a page then it is fine but if page break occurs then I want to print Entire Group or Table on next page.
In many cases you can€™t allow page break like, Pay Slip of Salary, Purchase Order Month Wise Schedules, etc€¦
So some option should be there like €œInsert Page break if table or group is not able to fit on current page€? HOW TO DO IT?
5) Is there any way to know that there is page break in this Table or Group?
6) Can I Insert Page Break based on Expression?

Theses problems really create headache. There must be some solutions.

Kindly Help,

Nilesh

Questions On Backup And Report Services

Nov 17, 2006

Hi,

I am thinking of using SQL and VB express for a project. Reading different versions information lead me to the following understanding on bakups and report services. Please comfirm my understanding or correct me if I am wrong. Any suggestion is always welcome.

1. SQL express does not include Agent Job Service so I cannot schedule a backup job or daily report to run automatically at a specific time. Is there a work around on this?

2. If I install the SQL express with the Advance Services edition, I still have to install the express tool kit to get the business intelligence developer studio in order to generate the reports. Do I have to install both on the same machine (the server) or the advance edition on the server and the tool kit on the client machine?

Thanks,
