I have been asked to include a view from our Oracle system in one of my SQL queries. As a programmer I can write querries all day long, but I have no administration skills.
Can someone just give me the basics on creating this ability? On my development system I have installed the Oracle client and configured an ODBC driver that points to the Oracle views. This has allowed me to create a linked table in Access, but I have never attempted to port this to SQL Server 2k.
I assume I just load the drivers on the production system as before, but do I then use an ODBC driver again, or is there a better method with SQL Server? If its the ODBC method, then how do I add a linked table in SQL?

Hi,In our environment a database view is based on columns in a table from anoracle database.This is a linked server I believe.I am told that since we use this construction no where clause is possible.So we get to many rows in our database which we have to filter later on.How can we do this differently ?? I have a number of scripts that run against an oracle server to retreive data to manipulate before populating a sqlserver database. I am connecting using an Odbc connection and using the DataReader Source to read from the Oracle table. It all seems to work ok.
When I have tried to extract data from an Oracle view in the same way it doesn't seem to work. The error message mentioned the PrimeOutput() method and error code 0xC02090F5. The view is very big so is it possible that the connection simply timed out?
I have a subset of data whose source of truth resides in an Oracle Database. Can I define a SQL Server View to retrieve this subset of data and make it available on the SQL Server side for say Reporting and SSRS? I think I also saw where they tend to prefer User-Defined functions as opposed to a view.
If I define the view using an OPENQUERY, I have noticed that it seems to run FOREVER on the SQL Server side and returns pretty timely if I run in Oracle SQL Developer. Is there anything I can tweak to improve this timeliness or lack there of? And the whole reason I'd like to create a view of this Oracle data is so that I can take advantage of all the views and functions that we have created on the SQL Server side.
I am trying to get data from an Oracle view using an OLE DB data source and a "SQL Command". When I "preview" the data it looks fine, but when I execute the package I get the following error:

Hi,In my application I Application_Start event in Global.asax I am wanting to populate an Application state variable to hold data from a database.I can use the exact code elsewhere in the application but when I try to open my SqlConnection object I get the error "SQL Server does not exist or access denied."I'm using NT security and impersonation.I've put a trace on the server and my user name isn't appearing as trying anything so it is as if it cannot find the server.Are there any issues with trying to open a connection from Application_Start?Thanks.
I have query that calculate a running balance, but I need to reset that balance when it reaches 240. Then start calculating the balance again from that value. For instance, let's see we have the following table:
We have an issue where servers goes slow from morning 2 AM EST to 10 AM EST.
Using SP_WhoIsActive we somehow found that there is netbackup from Symantec which runs during that time phrase.
As per Symantec team there backup should get over by 5 AM EST, per their testing for almost 100 Dbs on the server( not big in size , all of them in total would be 60 GB).
Using SP_whoisactive we only see, start time of that virtual backup occurring on tape, for one database at time.
So is there a way we actually determine when does the above backup kicks and stops?Also, could SQL server be the problem in making these backups run slow or there is something else i need to monitor?
Hi all, I want to raise one question which might not relevant to current discussion. Prob:-- I have some SSRS reports. I want to know for a given time period 1. How many people hit the report. 2. Who are the users hit the report in that time interval.
Is there any query to get that data? Or, should I go somewhere to see the data?
NB:- There is not any table in the application which is storing the data
We have SSRS reports (pointing to SQL 2012) containing cascading parameters that we have deployed on SharePoint 2013 and once a user makes a selection to the parent parameter, child parameters are getting refreshed based on the selection in the parent parameter and then we see this:
Once we hit Apply, the Loading image comes up and approximately10 seconds later, The whole webpage gets refreshed and the parameter selections get reset to default parameters.
This is getting frustrating because there are about 10 parameters in the report and once a user makes selections and hit apply if the page gets reset, the user has to make all the selections again.
We are working with Microsoft support on this who suggested us to increase the timeout setting of DistributedCache service on all our SharePoint servers which did seem to work initially but I do see this issue happening occasionally.
We have a remote business client who has a proxy server setup and this translates into receiving a 407 proxy authentication blocking error when attempting to download the report builder application for deployment off the report server which is housed locally with us. The proxy server does not allow them to download application type files off another site. At the moment, they would not like to disable the proxy for these users to allow them to deploy the application on their client or add the report server as a trusted site. Is there a method by which Report Builder can be locally installed on the client pc instead of online only with it knowing the correct report server to access and then still launch correctly when the report builder button is pressed through report manager?
I am not a web application guru by any means and we have tried to replicate the oneclick deployment and what occurs in the local settings/apps/2.0 subdirectories, but the application still attempts to download/install again. If we attempt to just launch the local executable on the client, report builder assumes the client pc (localhost) is the report server to access. Is there a method which will succeed?
I am trying to come up with a solution that does not involve having a version of every stored procedure for every user I have... Here is the problem...
I am going to have multiple users that need to have their own "product table". The structures are going to be the same for all. We currently only have one user and it is a DBO... all stored procedures are dbo.[sp name]... is there any way to get it so that the product table in the SP will be the user owned product table and not the dbo table??
I have tried just taking out the dbo prefix with no luck... the user's default schema will match the table they own so when they do a straight select they get the right information but it is just the SPs that I can't seem to get to work...
The only thing that I have come up with is making the SPs dynamic with having the username as parameter.
I have an issue using parameterised reports connecting to Oracle using "ODBC" and "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle" using parameteried reports. The following error is generated "ORA-01008 not all variables bound (Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle)" and a similiar one for ODBC. It works fine for simple reports. Do these 2 drivers have issues passing parameters for a remote Oracle query? Thanks.

1) Union
I have a select like "SELECT NVL(myColumn, 0) .... FROM myTable UNION SELECT 0 AS myColumn, .... FROM DUAL"
Even if I cast the columns in both selects (SELECT CAST(NVL(myColumn, 0) AS DECIMAL(10, 0) .... UNION SELECT CAST(0 AS DECIMAL(10, 0)) AS myColumn, .... FROM DUAL) I still get the error above.
2) SQL command from variable
The select basically looks like this:
"SELECT Column1, Column2, ... FROM myTable WHERE Updated BETWEEN User::LastLoad AND User::CurrentLoad"
Again, even if I cast all columns (like in the union), I still get the same error.
we recently got a scenario that we need to get the data from oracle tables which is installed on third party servers. we have sqlserver installed on ourservers. so they have created a DBLINK in oracle server to our sqlserver and published the DBLINK name.
what are the next steps that i need to follow on my sqlserver in order to access the oracle tables ?
On my dev server I have working ssis packages that use connections Microsoft OLEDB provider for Oracle MSDAORA.1 and Oracle provider for oledb and OracleClient data provider.
I use one or the other according to my needs.
In anticipation and to prepare for the build of a new production server, I have build a test server from scratch and deployed to it the entire dev.
Almost everything works except Microsoft OLEDB provider for Oracle.
ssis packages on the test machine will return an error

I have used the same installers for OS, SQL and Oracle SQL*Net on both dev and test machines. The install and then the restore/deployment on Test went fine.

I am trying to make an oracle publiching from sql server 2005 enterprise final release, i installed the oracle client 10.2 (10g) on the same server where sql server already installed, i made different connection to oracle database instance and it was ok.

I've been searching for a solution for this for a week-ish, so I thought I would post my quesiton directly. Here is my scenario..

Destination: Oracle 10g
The destination table has a partition set on a column called "DATE_HIGH". How do I populate this date high column in my package? Currently I just have a source object, and a destination object, but I'm unclear how to populate this field in the destination. I've read one blog that states "use OLE DB Command" - but that isn't enough information for me to implement - Can someone be more specific in these steps? Here is an example of what my newb-ness needs to understand
OLE DB Source (Select * from Table) ---> OLE DB Command (What query goes here?) --> OLE DB Destination.
Second part of my question: There is a second column called "ROW_NUM" and there is an Oracle Sequence provided to me... What objects do I need (Source, Destination, OLE DB Command etc...) and how do I call this sequence to populate on the fly as I'm loading data from my source?

I have designed a DTS package which will migrate a view from Sqlserver 2000 to Oracle.My package is using Microsoft OLEDB provider for Oracle driver for connecting to oracle.Im able to execute this package on the my system ie on the system where sqlclient is installed(Oracle client is also installed on my machine) .But when im doing it on the server im not able to do it.The Connection to Oracle Fails. I wanted to know in order to connect to Oracle from the server,is it necessary that Oracle has to be installed on the server?.If yes, is it enough if i install oracle client on the server or Oracle Server version has to be installed on Server.

I am having problems querying from linked oracle server. When i setup oracle as a linked server and purposely enter an incorrect password the query i run tells me i have an incorrect password. So it at least knows that. when i set the correct password and run a query I get this error:

My application which ran perfectly well yesterday suddenly stopped working in this morning with following error message. I didn't change anything, at least I believe. Interesting thing is that I don't use any Oracle connection but connects to MS SQL Server 2005 Express version locally. Error messages are different according to the connection string though I don't think it makes difference: ConnectionString = <add key="Databasehandtool1" value="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;Database=handtool;SSPI=true" />ErrorMessage from VS2008 ="Unable to get records. My development environment is : VS2008, SQL2005 EXPRESS, Windows XP SP2, ASP.NET 2.0 We have actually an Oracle server in the network though. My gut feeling is that something might have changed in my network server during the night but how come it can possibly affect my application running on my local PC. I checked the connection of local SQL Express Server from SQL Server Management Studio and it connected well with UserID=handtoo_DB and showed all tables and stored procedures required for the application. I created a query, which makes use of a temp table, and I need the results to be displayed in a View. Unfortunately, Views do not support temp tables, as far as I know, so I put my code in a stored procedure, with the hope I could call it from a View....
I compared view query plan with query plan if I run the same statementfrom view definition and get different results. View plan is moreexpensive and runs longer. View contains 4 inner joins, statisticsupdated for all tables. Any ideas?
