I want to tell to user about SQL Server Configuration Manager and wants to allow him "START / PAUSE / STOP" for SQL Server Express in system Tray. It is easy for the end user who don't know SQL Server.
I apologize if this question has already been asked a dozen times, I ran a search and came up with nothing, soooo...
I installed SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP1 + SQL Management Studio Express.
I attached all my old databases, and setup named pips, tcp/ip, etc, but for some reason, I don't see a SQL 2005 Express Icon in the system tray to indicate to me if the Server is running or not.
now I undestand Express doesn't come with Agent tools, but where on earth is my tray icon? Do I need to download the 'advanced reporting tools' version instead? (about 200mb+)
I have quick question. Ihave a job which consists of 9 steps. 9th step is: Exec xp_cmdshell 'c:mssql.bat'. in this batch file I am stopping and starting SQL services using net stop and net start command. This job is running perfectly but it is not giving the job history when I right click the job and view job history I can't see anything where as if I check the checkbox for Show step details it showing first 8 steps information but it is not showing 9th step information. Even I checked the Sysjobhistory system table in MSDB it shows only 8 steps information. What is the reason....
New here:) and hoping someone might be able to shed a little light on a problem I am having.
I have a job scheduled, which needs to be periodically stopped and then restarted. After looking through various places I think the start method and stop method are the best bets? But not really sure to be honest.
Can anyone give me some tips/pointers/opinions on what would be the best way to do this. (have tried to setup a job with the said method in each step - but it doesn't like my syntax.
Is there any way to schedule stop and start of NT services at a particular time daily.
For eg: If i have a service by name TemServer and if i need to stop that service each night at 9:00 and restart as soon as it stops.??
And Is there any way to start and stop the services of NT from workstation. Each and every time i am going to the server room for stopping the service and restarting.
how i can do it?Under Xp/2000, i write a application that stop/start this serices, butunder Win98, how i do it?Exists a method via SqlServer or a dos command to stop/start the MSDEprogram?Thanks a lotTomas--Questa è una firma automatica di MesNews.Sito: http://mesnews.no-ip.com

Profiler was run against a database looking for "long running" queries. I used the Duration column to filter out the queries that I didn't want. When reviewing the output, I noticed that for some queries the StartTime was equal to the EndTime even though the Duration was set higher. My question is, "What can account for this discrepancy and what inferences should I draw about the difference?" Does the difference represent a resouce being locked or some other type of blocking (Duration) and once the query was allowed to run, it completed quickly? TIA

I also came across that I can achieve this using Execute Process task but for this I have to define executable file.... actually i dont want ne thing outside from my SSIS package
A few service stop/start/restart questions on SQL Server 2005 SP2, whichI'll call SQLS.It looks as if there are *potentially* 6 ways to start/stop SQLSServices like the engine itself, integration services, reportingservice, Agent..-SQLS Configuration Manager-SQLS Surface Area Configuration (for Services and Connections)-Mgmt Studio Local (on server)-Mgmt Studio Remote (on client)-Windows Control Panel->Admin Tools->Services-Command Prompt (ala net start MSSQLSERVER)By policy, I am /not/ Administrator on the server. But I am SysAdminrole in SQLS. I have had various levels of success starting/stoppingservices in the ways listed above. In some I get Access denied, and inothers I get no msg and it simply doesn't work.Is there some special non-Admin OS group I need to be in to start/stopservices? Is this handled differently in the different interfaceslisted above? It seems like my best success for starting/stopping the engine and Agentis in /local/ Mgmt Studio, but /not/ remote Mgmt Studio - the optionsare greyed out on a remote client. Is this by design? Is it a SQLSbug?I'm sure I'm not the only SQLS DBA who does not have Admin rights on hisserver who wants to start/stop services. Generally speaking, how isthis intended to work?Any help appreciated.Allen JantzenA freshly minted DQLS DBA
Hi I have upgraded my local to sql server 2005, but still need to access the remote instance which is still at version 2008/8.0. Enterprise Manager has been removed (by the SQL server 2005 installation) Does anyone know how I can restart older version of SQL server instance (ie 2000/8.0) using SQL server Management Studio?
I don't have admin access on the server which the sql remote instance is hosted. Can get around it by asking the sys admin guy to do it for now but would prefer to continue to be able to do it myself. SQL Server Configuration Manager can only manage SQL server 2005 versions - a nice little caveat!
Is there a way to stop/start remote services using 'net stop/start'? - without having to write code.... I'll continue to search for a solution, but if someon can point me in the right direction, I'd be most greatful.
I'm getting this error message when I upgraded the SQL Server to install SSIS and other components.

For some reason the status lights in my Enterprise manager are no longer working. I am connected to the databases, but because the indicator lights are not working, I can`t get a quick visual status of my servers. Any way to get my lights back on?
I have a question about granting enough rights to allow a non admin user to start and stop a sql server service via the SQL Server Management Studio by right clicking on the server node.
I have changed the acl's of the SQL Server service security and gave the user rights to start and stop the service. This does allow them to connect remotly to the server using computer manager and they successifully start and stop the service. But, in SQL Server Management Studio the option still does not show up, unless he is a admin of the server.
Does anyone know what other security settings I need to address for the start and stop to show up when I right click on the server node?
We created one SA login [login name: test_db] and give the Db_owner permission for particular user db, but this test_db login able to access the all system database except model database. Here problem is I am giving the only one particular user database but that login why able to access the system database. Here how to stop the system database access…
I have just installed Sql server 2005 on a win 2008 server, I noticed that the sql server icon isn't in the tray, but the server is started. How can I get the sql server in the tray?
Hello, I have a Question/doubt on SqlDependency.Start/SqlDependency.Stop.
After the implementation of my solution the question sounds "stupid" ... maybe is only the stress due to the fact that I'm going to deploy the application on Test.
Anyway.. I developed this application (windows application) that uses query Notification features to subscribe and get notification from Sql Server 2005 so it use the tipical pattern: SqlDependency.Start, SqlDependency_OnChange,SqlDependency.Stop.
This is application is installed on several client so actually I get have several notifications running on the Server.
When one of the client exit the application and call SqlDependency.Stop the service, queue and procedure are dropped.
Does the command drops all the query notification' service, queue and procedure running on the instance or only the one created by the specific user?
I want someone to be able to execute a DTS Package but I do not want to give them access to Enterprise Manager. Is there anywhere way of doing this. Like a shortcut on their desktop. Thanks in adavnce for help.
Is it possible to manually force/call/start the system AUTOSHRINK process? I have an issue that appears only when the engine shrinking process is running and I need this to reproduce my bug.
I know how to start a "regular" database shrink process with:DBCC SHRINKDATABASE(xxxx);, but this is not the same as one started from the database engine.
I'm using SQL Server 2012 and was attempting to move the msdb, model, and tempdb databases to a new location and accidentally gave their log files an mdf extension instead of ldf when providing the new pathfilename. After the server wouldn't start I checked my script and noticed my error. I have good backups of my system databases, so I was hoping to start the MSSQLSERVER service in single-user mode (using the -m startup parameter) and then just restore master using sqlcmd.Â
Unfortunately the service was starting but I couldn't connect via sqlcmd using any of the three protocols (it said the server was not found or not accessible each time). I also tried using the dedicated Admin connection but I got the same error. Then I went into the Templates folder and copied the master, msdb, model, and tempdb templates into the DATA folder and tried to restart SQL Server but still no luck (now the MSSQLSERVER service won't start at all). Is there an easy way to fix this mess without having to reinstall from the setup application?
I have a relatively common scenario. There is a stored procedure which takes two input parameters which are used as clauses in the query, e.g:
select * from myTable where (field1 = @param1 or field2 = @param2)
Now, the behaviour I'm ideally looking for is for the SP to implement different logic depending on what parameters have been supplied. If either one of the params has a value of zero then I want to run the query on the other param only, or if both params have values greater than zero, then I want to run the query using both parameters e.g.:
pseudocode: If @param1 = 0 then select * from myTable where field2 = @param2 else if @param2 = 0 then select * from myTable where field1 = @param1 else if param2 <> 0 and param1 <> 0 then select * from myTable where field1 = @param1 and field2 = @param2
Looks straightforward enough. In reality of course the actual query is much more complicated than that, and it's a mess to write it out three times just to do a bit of if/else logic.
There are two obvious solutions to this: either do the if/else in code and call different SPs, or make the query an SP on its own which is called by my original SP with different logic. For various reasons I'd rather not do either of these things.
This is such a common scenario that I'm wondering whether or not there's some easier, cleaner solution that I've missed, or don't know about. Is there?
I have been using SSRS2k5 now since early CTP, and one thing that bothers me is the lack of keyboard shortcuts and windows standards.
For example: If I am in the data screen, and want to enter a SQL Query, I cannot use the tab key. So I copy it to SQL Management Studio, but I cant use CTRL-A to select all.
If I am in the layout tab, and want to bold a field, I hit CTRL-B, but that pulls up the breakpoint entry dialog.
If I have a table on a report, and want to add click-thru navigation, I have to:
Right click on cell 1
Click on properties
Select Navigation
Click on Jump to Report
Select the report from the list
Click on parameters
Select parameter 1
Now, if I want a field as the parameter, i can just select from the drop down, but most of the time I am passing parameters from the 1st report to the 2nd report. Then i have to:
Click on the Expression button
Either type the parameter name, or click on it from the list.
Press OK
Repeat number 8 for the number of parameters.
Hit OK.
Hit OK.
REPEAT FOR ALL CELLS Now, here is the issue... If you have a 20 column table, and have similar click thru functionality, you have to repeat this process for each cell. You cannot multi select. THAT would be a huge timesaver. I would rather set all 20 cells the same, and tweak 1 or 2, rather than kill my wrist mousing thru the above process 20 times. (It hurts, trust me )
These seem like little things, until you are working on 50 reports in a short time frame.
Anyone else find this bothersome? Is there any improvement on the GUI in the next release?
This is my error text... how do I get this nonsense to stop?!

Hello. I have recently installed from scratch RS 2003 on a WIN2003 SRV and got that the problem that the administrator cannot access or even see the regular administration toolbar and links at the Report Manager, such as Site Configuration, Upload New File, the common 'Contents | Properties ' tab, among other stuff. The only options available are 'Home', 'My Subscriptions' and 'Help', in the right superior link bar. I find this behaviour very strange, since the RS comes right out of the box configured with full access to administrator, but right now I CAN'T do any administration task on the RS Server.
Another strange behaviours I've found: - The few links that appear redirect to the internal ip address of the server. - When you call the '/ReportServer/ReportingService.asmx' it returns an XML document, not the usual browsing interface.
There's some information about the server configuration I think it might help: - IIS is running more than one website, and the RS server is not installed on the Default WebSite, wich is stopped. - SharePoint Services is running in the server, but not in the DefaultWebSite. - The security settings of the virtual directory of the Report Manager are configured to use Windows Authentication and are NOT configured to use anonymous authentication. - The server is published to the Internet.
There's some stuff that I tried and for now didn't worked: - Create the virtual directories in other websites. - Switch the attributes of the 'impersonate' attribute in Web.config file between true and false. - Enable anonymous authentication and use the administrator account to impersonate. - The steps described in the help article 'Troubleshooting a Side-by-Side Installation of Reporting Services and Windows SharePoint Services' - Reinstalling the RS product.
