Reuse Calculated Values

Nov 14, 2006

What is the best code pratice to use do the following code,

SELECT
fo.no as LNum,
fo.name as LName,
sum(CASE fo.docnome WHEN "In" THEN fo.etotal ELSE 0 END) as In1,
sum(CASE fo.docnome WHEN "In2" THEN fo.etotal ELSE 0 END) as In2,
sum(In1+In2)/10 as inDec,
from fo group by fo.no,fo.name order by fo.name

instead of

SELECT
fo.no as LNum,
fo.name as LName,
sum(CASE fo.docnome WHEN "In" THEN fo.etotal ELSE 0 END) as In1,
sum(CASE fo.docnome WHEN "In2" THEN fo.etotal ELSE 0 END) as In2,
((sum(CASE fo.docnome WHEN "In" THEN fo.etotal ELSE 0 END))+sum(CASE fo.docnome WHEN "In2" THEN fo.etotal ELSE 0 END)))/10 as inDec,
from fo group by fo.no,fo.name order by fo.name

I cant use functions and procedures. Is there any better and cleaner way to code this, reusing the calculated values?

Calculated Values And Database Design.

Jul 20, 2005

Hi everybody,I need some help on calculated values in my database design.I'm creating an accounting / business management application with theusual modules like A/R, A/P, Inventory, etc.I don't know how to handle calculated values in fields like "CustomerBalance", "Inventory Item Qty on Hand", "Inventory Item Qty Last cost"and other similar.I don't want to create fields in the database to store these valuesbut I want to create them on the fly instead. Another thing I preferto do is use code in my application (vb.net) not T-SQL to do this(stored procedure or views), because this way I'm moving businesslogic into SQL; so far all the logic is located in a Business RulesDLL.My question is how can I do that and at the same time achieve "easy"joins. For example:Every time I retrieve some customer's info I need his balance. Let'ssay if my query is:SELECT CustomerID, CustomerName, Address from CustomersWhere CustomerID = ‘xxxxxx'How can I retrieve the balance, when is calculated from other fieldsin other tables, such as Invoices, Credit Memos and Cash Receipts?I thought to use views and add a join to the above query. Is that goodor bad, performance wise? What other options I have?Looking forward for your answer. Thanks in advanced.Stefanos

Null Values In Calculated Fields

May 22, 2008

Hi all

I have a calculated fields in report designer such as a + b + c + d. In sql server if I run this query

select a + b + c + d from table1

and any of a,b,c or d is null, the result is null.

whereas in calculated fields, it does not return null but infact ignores the null value and treats it as zero.

I want my calculated field to be null if any of the values are null.
Is it possible? I cannot use the isNothing function because I have too many fields and it will be quite cumbersome.

Thanks

Calculated Values In Target Table

Dec 12, 2007

Hi,

is there any way to fill up tables with calculated valued? My Source Table is build-on like this example:

CustNo / Year / Variable / Value
100 / 2005 / var1 / 321.90
100 / 2005 / var2 / 44.20
100 / 2006 / var1 / 12.09
100 / 2006 / var2 / 7.91
101 / 2005 / var1 / 23.78
101 / 2005 / var2 / 67.22

My Target Table should have this result:

KPI / CustNo / Year / Value
KPI1 / 100 / 2005 / 366.10
KPI1 / 100 / 2006 / 20.00
...

What I want to accomplish? I want to add var1 and var2 from Customer 100 in Year 2005, but is this possible with standard tasks in SSIS?

Power Pivot :: DAX Calculated Measure For Sum Of Max Values

Sep 21, 2015

We have a client that wants to take the Max value of a count at the Product level, but then for each Brand (Parent of product), sum the Max values for that particular slice.  The example below shows the Max sales per month over the last 6 months.

Prod1 had it's best month in Month2 (20 units) and Prod2 had its best month in Month4 (30 units).  Brandx should roll up to 50 units.  Can DAX handle this in a single Calc Measure?

Brandx          50
    Prod1        20
    Prod2        30
Brandy          60
    Prod5        40
    Prod6        20

Retrieving Scalar Or Calculated Values From Stored Procedures With C#

Feb 4, 2007

I am trying to build an Sql page hit provider.  I am having trouble getting a count back from the database.  If I use ExecuteScalar it doesn't see any value in the returned R1C1.  If I use ExecuteNonQuery with a @ReturnValue, the return value parameter value is always zero.  Ideally I would like to use a dynamic stored proceudre if there are any suggestions for using them with C#.  My table has rvPathName, userName and a date.  I have the AddWebPageHit method working so I know data connection and sql support code in provider is working.  I think the problem is either in how I am writing the stored procedures or how I am trying to retrieve the data in C#.  Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.

Analysis :: Create A Calculated Set From Union Of Values In Two Sets?

Oct 26, 2015

I have the following MDX Query:

Select {measures.[Dollars]} on 0,
non empty
[Divisions].[Division].[All].Children *
[Cost Centres].[Cost Centre].[All].Children
[Locations].[Locations].[All].Children
on 1
From MyCube

which produced the following table:

Division
 Cost Centre
 Location
 Dollars
AA
1
X
$30.00

[code]....

What I am hoping to do is create a set out of the Union of specific values in the [Cost Centres].[Cost Centre] and [Locations].[Locations] hierarchies into a single set and use that new set in my MDX query across the columns.

Using the table and query from above, I have the following conditions that would determine the value in the set (lets call the new set 'NewSet')

When Cost Centre = 1 and Location = X Then "CustomType1"
When Cost Centre = 1 and Location = Y Then "CustomType2"
When Cost Centre = 1 and Location = Z Then "CustomType3"
When Cost Centre = 2 and Location = Y Then "CustomType4"
When Cost Centre = 2 and Location = Z Then "CustomType5"Else "Default"

Then, if I was to execute the new query:

with

set NewSet as "Some Unknown Magic Here"

Select {measures.[Dollars]} on 0,
non empty
[Divisions].[Division].[All].Children *
{NewSet}
on 1
From MyCube

I would end up with

Division
 NewSet
Dollars
AA
CustomType1
$166.64
AA
CustomType3
$64.24
BB

[code]....

Analyze Key Influencers Questions

Jun 24, 2007

I will be grateful if you could answer a few more questions around Analyzing Key Influencers

1. When specifying the training data for Decision Tree, there is a SUGGEST button (Recommend inputs for currently set predictable) which recommends which input are related to the predictable attribute. It also gives a €˜Score€™ for each recommended inputs. What algorithm does the SUGGEST button use? Does it use simple entropy/correlation based algorithm OR sophisticated feature selection algorithms?

2. Can I access this €˜Score€™ and recommended inputs above programmatically?

3. What feature selection algorithms are used in SQL Server 2005? Can they be invoked programmatically?

5. In Logistic Regression mining model viewer, we get a chart which clearly shows what attributes favor which state of the predictable attribute. For example, income level < 23000 favors BikeBuyer = 0 (does not buy) with a score of 89.00. What algorithm is used to calculate the €˜Score€™? Can LR be used as a feature selector in case where the predicted attribute is binary (select the attributes that favor one state or the other with a score of, say, greater than some threshold)?

6. You suggested using Naive Bayes to find AKIs. What if the input attributes are all continuous (predicted attribute binary)? Shouldnt I be going for LR?

Thanks bunches

Excel Data Mining Add-in - Analyze Key Influencers - Remote Processing Issue

Nov 12, 2007

When I run the 'Analyze Key Influencers' tool against the sample data through a remote AS server I get:
The task was not able to detect any key influencers for the 'Purchased Bike' column. The values of 'Purchased Bike' seem unrelated to values of other columns.

however when I run it against a local AS server I get the expected results.

I can see no differences in settings or setup between the AS instances I am trying to use - perhaps a permissions issue?

SQL 2012 :: Calculated Columns Conditional On Calculated Columns Multiple Tables

Apr 20, 2014

I have 4 tables involved here. The priority table is TABLE1:

NAMEID TRANDATE TRANAMT RMPROPID TOTBAL
000001235 04/14/2014 335 A0A00 605
000001234 04/14/2014 243 A0A01 243
000001236 04/14/2014 425 A0A02 500

TRANAMT being the amount paid & TOTBAL being the balance due per the NAMEID & RMPROPID specified. The other table includes a breakdown of the total balance, in a manner of speaking, by charge code (thru a SUM(OPENAMT) query of DISTINCT CHGCODE

TABLE2
NAMEID TRANDATE TRANAMT RMPROPID CHGCODE OPENAMT
000001234 04/01/2014 400 A0A01 ARC 0
000001234 04/05/2014 -142 A0A01 ARC 228
000001234 04/10/2014 15 A0A01 ALT 15

[code]...

Also with a remaining balance (per CHGCODE) column. Any alternative solution that would effectively split the TABLE1.TRANAMT up into the respective TABLE2.CHGCODE balances? Either way, I can't figure out how to word the queries.

SELECT INTO..# Performance Impact In SQL 7.0

Jan 18, 2001

I want to determine the performance impact caused by the extensive use of the 'select into #' statement in a production environment. The current situation is that our reports team extensively uses the 'select into #' statement to build smaller subsets of data. These subsets are then used as the basis to create summary style reports and exports. All this is accomplished via the use of SQL pass-through.

After these reports/exports are completed and tested, they are then released to our operations department and the users. The reports/exports then can be run against the production server at the discretion of the user, provided they have the appropriate permissions. These reports/exports target the live data on the primary production server that already has been designated for the use of the application software.

Now I know that reporting against a transactional-based server, where the users run the application, is not a very good idea. (Inherited) I am currently migrating all reports/exports to a reporting server. Although it will still be transaction-based, the reports/exports will be isolated from user activity. Eventually we will be moving toward a warehouse scenario.

I also know that the extensive use of the 'select into #' statement is not a coding practice for use in production. I provided several alternatives to this practice

1) insert..select 2) insert..execute - from stored procedure

I have read that in the in sql 6.5 that this may cause severe performance and locking behaviors in system db's and tempdb. However, in the following document on the Microsoft Knowledge Base, it indicates that SQL 7.0 may have corrected this issue.

Q153441 - FIX SELECT INTO Locking Behavior.htm

Despite the indication of being corrected, I am still not convinced. I am frequently seeing drastic performance hits, especially when several of the reports are running. (which is very common) My concern is that moving these reports/exports to a reporting server may save the users; I believe that it may be migrating the problem to another location. I will be working with the developers to optimize their code and will investigate index issues.

** To make a long story short. I would like someone who has experience with this provide me with the top 5+ reasons not to use the 'select into #' methodology in a production environment. Further, if anyone has any documentation, I would surely like the info.

Thanks, Dave

Performance Impact When Using On Delete Cascade

Jan 15, 2008

I want to use "on delete cascade" in one of my tables but I'm worried though whether this can affect the performance when having millions of records. To explain more I'm working on a social networking website and I have two tables UserAccounts, in which I only keep the username and password and a few related fields, and Profiles in which I keep the profile data for users, I want to be sure that I won't have any records in the Profiles table without corresponding records in the UserAccounts table. Please see the DDL below to understand more the structure of the tables:

CREATE TABLE UserAccounts
(
UserID INT NOT NULL IDENTITY(1,1) PRIMARY KEY,
UserName VARCHAR(20) NOT NULL,
Password VARCHAR(20) NOT NULL,
--other fields (e.g. last login .. etc)
)

CREATE TABLE Profiles
(
UserID INT NOT NULL REFERENCES UserAccount(UserID),
-- other fields (e.g. birthdate, nationality .. etc)
)

Will this dll component be impacted after the OS Upgrade? or will there be no impact at all?

Impact On Replication When A Server Goes Into Standby Mode

Sep 1, 2007

We have the following scenario:
Server A replicates Database A to Server B.
Server C has Database A on it as well, but in standby mode. We are applying the transaction logs generated by Database A on Server A to the database on Server C leaving it in standby mode each time.

Let's say we had planned maintenance for Server Aand dumped the last set of transactions on Server A in standby mode to be applied to to Server C. What happens to the replica on Server B? When I start to use Server C, can I backup its transactions and apply them to Server A, and then have those transactions replicated to Server B? And then what do I do when the maintenance is complete so that I can swithc back to Server A and have the replication continue on as before the maintenance to Server B?

Parent-child Variable Issues That May Impact Deployment

Nov 14, 2006

We are using SSIS for the first time. My team is working on a project that involves putting a date time stamp into a series of tables. These tables are being assembled in a series of child packages being executed by the parent. When the parent runs, we evaluate our timestamp variable as a GETDATE() expression and pass it to the children to be included as a derived column. We don't want the actual runtime of each step to be the timestamp, just the start of the batch (parent).

In order to get the variable to pass over to the child, we needed to set the package location to "file system"instead of "SQL Server". It seems unusual that this would be so. Are we doing something wrong?

What implications does this have for deployment? Will we need to customize the packages for each instance we plan to run this on? Can you have a parent run a child package on a different instance? This would be a performance plus since we have really huge source databases and would like to distribute the processing.

Hmmm, my boss just told me to scratch the whole idea of parent-child and go with a control table to store the variable for all the packages to access. Oh well, I'm still interested in why this is so cumbersome when really its just passing a parameter from one procedure to another.

Oh, and I think you could use a spellchecker on this message box. At least I could use one.

I have been discussing this Service Broker issues in this forum for quite sometimes and sorry to bother u all again€¦ To make things more clearer before implementing in production environment I have few doubts and it should be clarified..

As discussed in the first link we can clear sys.conversation_endpoints by just giving ALTER DATABASE GPx SET NEW_BROKER WITH ROLLBACK IMMEDIATE. But my apprehension is that if we run this command on production server and it truncate this table€¦ what will be the impact and overall overhead on the system€¦ Is it recommended to give this statement on Production Server daily at less traffic times, to clear this table ?€¦ will it have adverse effect. I repeat I have downtime , I can even shutdown this server daily€¦

I also, just want to know why Microsoft has not looked into this aspects€¦ why the system itself is clearing the expired messages.. What is the thought behind this architecture

I have the script to run in batch€¦ but in high-level meetings it is always difficult to convince this architecture/process€¦

Thanks in advance
