Multi-user Access Through A Data-access Layer/remoting Server

I've been developing desktop client-server and web apps and have used Access and SQL Server Standard most of the time.
I'm looking into using SQL CE, and had a few questions that I can't seem to get a clear picture on:
- The documentation for CE says that it supports 256 simultaneous connections and offers the Isolation levels, Transactions, Locking, etc with a 4GB DB. But most people say that CE is strictly a single-user DB and should not be used as a DB Server.
Could CE be extended for use as a multi-user DB Server by creating a custom server such as a .NET Remoting Server hosted through a Windows Service (or any other custom host) on a machine whereby the CE DB would run in-process with this server on the machine which would then be accessed by multiple users from multiple machines??
Clients PCs -> Server PC hosting Remoting Service -> ADO.NET -> SQL CE
- and further more can we use Enterprise Services (Serviced Components) to connect to SQL CE and further extend this model to offer a pure high-quality DB Server?
Clients PCs -> Server PC hosting Remoting Service -> Enterprise Services -> ADO.NET -> SQL CE
Seems quite doable to me, but I may be wrong..please let me know either ways

SQL Server 2005 Security Setup For ASP.Net Web Application Data Access - HELP!

Here is my situation: I am creating a database driven ASP.Net web application that will be used over the internet. My ASP.Net application connects to my SQL server 2005 database/server by using a SQL server login. I am using the DPAPI API to encrypt my connection stings with a hidden entropy value for extra security. I am using the SQL login for obvious reasons, as my users will not have a windows login.
What I am trying to do: I want to limit this SQL login account to be able to just run/execute stored procedures and NOT access the tables or views directly. In my ASP.Net application I am using the MS applications data block, and I am using stored procedures for every single database access action. There is no inline SQL being executed from my web application.
What I have tried so far:
I created a new schema and made the above SQL login account owner of this schema. I then granted "Execute" permissions to the SQL login and DENY permissions to all other permissions.
I created an database role with "Execute" only permissions and DENY permissions to all other permissions.
What Happened: In BOTH of the above scenarios I tested a direct SQL statement against one of my tables, from my ASP.Net application and I was able retrieve data back, NOT GOOD, exactly what I am trying to STOP.
If someone could give me (Step-by-Step) guide on how to setup the situation I am looking for, I would be very grateful!

SQL Server 2005 - Windows Application And Website

I have a question which I put the company that host my website but I didnt get a conclusive answer. Maybe someone here will be able to advise or help me with my situation.
I want to build a database that I will run on my local server and the front end of this will be run using a windows application. I have a website which I run the database on the remote server. What I would like to do is to be able to synchronize certain tables between the two databases (such as updating products table, or orders table). I am using sql server 2005 and I am using the sql server management studio to access my database on the remote server. I did notice there is a synchronzie button. I also came across some 3rd party tools. Not sure if that is the way to go.
If anyone as done this before or can give me any suggestions, I would be delighted.

MSDTC - Remote Accessing SQL Server 2005 From A Desktop Application - Windows 2003 Server

I am developing a windows application that needs to communicate with a remote SQL server 2005 database. Server allows remote connections and MSDTC service also running. Do I need to run MSDTC service on the client machine where I use desktop application ? any ideas ? It's throwing some error like
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.
When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact
that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.
But my SQL Server allows remote connection, and I am able to do a select statement.
But when I insert/update anything, it's throwing this error. I guess some problem with MSDCT. Anybody have any idea ?

I'm working on a project where I have to create a password protected form for teachers to submit reports about students.
Originally I was going to use asp.net to create the form, but unfortunately the server I'm working with will not be granted asp functionality in the allotted timeframe.
To solve this issue I have another idea. So I will ask a few questions to help with research before I begin coding.
Is it possible to create a windows application that can connect to an access database hosted online? The windows app will need to be be able to update, insert, and select information from the database.
There is only going to be about 30-40 people using this windows application once or twice a week.
Thus I envision taking a password protected access database and dropping it onto a server.
The windows application will have the online location of the database embeded into the code. (connection string)
From there on out coding for the windows application should be the exact same as if the database was hosted locally on the computer, correct?
Also,
1. What is a good way to check and make sure the computer is connected to the internet before my application tries to access the database?
2. Are there any drastic security issues with this process that I should think about. The database will only be password proected, and the windows application will take a username/password from the user and check it against a table before they are able to submit info to the database.
I just need to be pointed in the right direction for this project.

Remoting Timeout When Calling SSIS Package Execute From A Windows Service
Sep 12, 2007When running an integration services package from a windows service I get the "Object ... has been disconnected or does not exist at the server." exception after aproximately six minutes of execution.
This is *not* my windows service failing. I can loop indefinately while tracing to a log file within the service and it will run forever. While calling the mypackage.execute(...) method however, after six minutes (give or take) the exception is thrown...
my code looks something like this:

My web application is using Integrated Windows Authentication so its Page.User.Identity is set to a DOMAINusername value... I want to pass that to my connectionstring or have my connections pick up the identity automatically and use that Identity when accessing the db server.Oh and another thing, my IIS Application Pool is using a specific Identity itself, so I don't know if that might affect the above.Hope someone could help.

Problem Using SQL Server Mobile 2005 With Windows Mobile 5 Application

I am developping a non-managed C++ application for PocketPC using a SQL Server mobile database.
The application is compiled for PocketPC 2003 and uses SQL Server Mobile v2. I use Visual Studio 2005. But I need to compile the application for Windows Mobile 5.0 devices. So I installed the WM5 SDK and had the WM5 into my project configuration.
The "ssceoledb.h" which I include incluses the "transact.h" file. But my problem is that this file is only provided with the PocketPC 2003 SDK and not in the WM5 SDK.
So I cannot use the WM5 configuration project with SQL Server. I also tried with the last SQL Server Mobile 2005 (ie v3.0) and the "ssceoledb30.h" also includes "transact.h".
Did I miss something to install ?
Do you know how I can resolve the problem ?

Data Application Blocks For Windows Mobile
Feb 5, 2006I've read that microsoft.applicationblocks.data for .net v2 can't be deployed to a mobile app, and my experience bears that out. So I 'm wondering if there are application blocks for windows mobile 5 that would know how to both talk to sql server mobile and sql server 2005. I see OpenNetCF has a port but as far as I can tell, they only address sql server mobile and not talking to a sql server 2005 remote database. I can use the OpenNetCF version for my sql server mobile requirements, but I'm hoping there is an encapsulation of sqlclient calls for communication with my server db.

Real Time Live Data On A Windows Application .NET 2.0
Jan 10, 2006I want to build a windows application in Visual Studio 2005 that grabs some data from a SQL DB and displays it in a gridview. That is easy and I already have it done, but I also want to know how to show this data in real-time. For example: right now we have a application that pulls some login information for all the users and displays their phone extension, their name, and their status. They can change their status by clicking on some radios below the datagrid and on change it updates the data and then posts back. However, I dont know how the guy who did it made it so that these local changes are automatically shown on everyone elses computers around the office. In other words, they are shown the live data as it changes, without having to refresh it or anything. How would I go about doing this or does anyone have any places/resources that could help me accomplish this task. Thanks.
Oh and the guy who wrote this is no longer working here and he deleted the source code so i cant look at it.

Package Execution Fails In Windows Service But Runs Fine As A Windows Application.
Jun 23, 2006I am attempting to write a Windows service that watches a database for uploaded files to import. When a new file is found, the corresponding SSIS package is run from the file system with variables passed through. I started development as a Windows app and copied the functionality to a service.
The app runs fine. The service does not. I get a "Failure" each time a package is executed. Everything is identical behind the scenes with the obvious exceptions that OnStart and OnStop handlers are buttons in the app. I added a script task at the beginning of one of the SSIS packages to notify me that it is even running at all. It doesn't even hit that initial task.
Again, the app will run all packages just fine. The data is imported and the results return as "Success."

I am using VS2005 C# + sql server 2005 Express edition.
I need to using a database that uses my own defined data types to define its tables columns.
I already have designed a Database projact and create the new UDT as follows:
Create a new Database project in the Visual C# language nodes.
Add a reference to the SQL Server 2005 database that will contain the UDT.
Add a User-Defined Type class.
Write code to implement the UDT.
Select Deploy from the Build menu.
Now I need to ask some quistions:
1- When I try to add a new query to a table that contains my new data type in its columns,if I try to exexute the query the next message appears:
'Execution of user code in the .Net framework is disabled. Enable "clr enabled" configuration option'.
How can I doing that??
2- I need to use that database - which has the new data type - in a traditional ' Visual C# Windows Application' instead of 'Database', but:
when I try to add a new Data Source that contains the tables that have the new data types in its definitions, the next message appears:
'<AyaDatabase.dbo.MyNewUDTTable>
User-defined types(UDTs)are not supported in the Dataset Designer.'
So, how can I resolve that problem??

As I understand it, the advantage of an SQL Server project is that the app deploys somehow as part of the database. If that's the case, how would I handle the scenario where the database has been updating at customer site and I need to install just a new release of the software? Would I be better of creating a Windows Application project and connecting to the database explicitly? Thank you.

Can I have an sql server database (mdf file) on a server and allow windows applications at different site manipulate the database.
As far as I am concerned the only thing that needs to be configued is the connection string..is this correct.
[i would rather use windows applications rather than asp pages]
If I can, the best way to manipulate the database is to use stored procedures. How would I do the following to create and execute the following proposed procedure:
Insert data into a table
Update another table as a result
Execute the store procedure on a form to execute these two statements

Access To MSSQl 2005 Upgrade Challenge With ASP Web Application

I have developed a web application using ASP 3.0 with a Access DB 2002 backend. I have decided to recently to upgrade the database to SQL 2005 but I am having issues that I cannot work out because I am new to MsSql Language. It appears that the FORMAT function in Access does not work in MsSql ( does not recognise the function ) along with some of the PIVOT and TRANSFORM calls (coming up with "Syntax error near "..."") . SQL Server Events Logged In As Windows Application Event

I am backing up my all the databases (around 50 servers and 500 database) using scheduled jobs. I backup my transaction log files at every two hours of interval and databases on daily basis.
I have set option of "Write to Windows Application Event Log" - When job fails during the creation of job in the "Notification Tab" of Create New Job.
As per documentation SQL server automatically records some of the events to windows application event log. After succesful completion of Log backup and DB backup, event gets logged in Windows Application Event Log. And when job fails, I get two events logged in the Windows Application Event Log file, one due to my setting and other automatically by SQL Server.
Due to this Windows event log file is growing much faster and I have to clear it in every 3-4 days.
My quesiton - Is there a way such that to get only failures event logged in Windows Application event log file and any successful backup jobs should not go to Windows application event file?
Can any suggest some idea what should I do?
I am using SQL Server 2000 with SP3 on Windows 2000 Advanced server. Some of my databases are still using Version 7.0/6.5 on NT.

Data Won't Always Save In Upsized Access Application
Nov 20, 2007I successfully upsized an Access database to SQL Server Express so that I have an Access frontend and a SQL Server Express backend. People started using this on an intranet, but right away they started complaining that sometimes their data wasn't saved. For example, they might have entered 8 records but when they went back to look at them only 4 were actually saved in the database. Any idea why this might be, or how I could trace the errors and find out?
