How Can I Dynamically Build Sql SELECT Using ASP 1.0 Array Concept

Jun 6, 2007

The below code is ASP 1.0 to dynamically search a database and I want to use the same concept for a ASP.Net 2.0 solution.  Do I do this in the code behind or on the aspx page and if on the aspx page what controls do I use for the array split?  Basically where do I start.  It took me a long time to get this old code working, I am hoping it is simpler in 2.0.

Thank you

OLD ASP 1.0 code to dynamically build a Sql Select statement for searching a database using one or more search words entered by user.

If Request.Querystring("kwdSearch") <> "" Then
Dim kwdString, ArrKwdString, iCount
iCount = 0
kwdString = Replace(Request.Querystring("kwdSearch"), "'", "''")
ArrKwdString = Trim(kwdString)
ArrKwdString = Split(kwdString, " ",-1,1)

For iCount = 0 to UBound(ArrKwdString)
 If iCount < UBound(ArrKwdString) Then
  Criteria = Criteria & "tblLinkInfo.L_Keywords LIKE '%" & ArrKwdString(iCount) & "%' AND "
  Else
  Criteria = Criteria & "tblLinkInfo.L_Keywords LIKE '%" & ArrKwdString(iCount) & "%' "
 End if
Next

 RS.Open "SELECT * FROM tblLinkInfo Where (" & Criteria & ") AND L_Enabled = 1 ORDER BY " & SortBy & "L_Rank", CNN, 3
 If RS.EOF Then
  If Rs.State Then RS.Close
  RS.Open "SELECT * FROM tblLinkInfo WHERE L_Description LIKE '%" & Replace(Request.Querystring("kwdSearch"),"''","'") & "%' AND
  L_Enabled = 1  ORDER BY " & SortBy & "L_Rank", CNN, 3
  End If

  RESULTS --- Display results with Repeater1.DataBind(); etc

  Exit Sub
End If

How To Build FROM Clause Dynamically

Mar 29, 2004

I look trough the forum, but did not find any simular problem. Somebody, help, please!
What I need to do is to write an algorithm which create a FROM clause for SQL query, using tables and joined fields, specified by the user. There could be up to 25 tables with any type of join (INNER, OUTER, FULL, CROSS). I know the basic structure of the FROM clause: "from T1 inner(or other type) join T2 on T1.field=T2.field" etc., but the main problem that users can specify tables in any order and I have to re-arrange them to create valid statement.

Select .... Where The Item.ID Is In This Array?

Jul 20, 2005

Hiya,I want to populate a list view (in a variety of ways), but I would rathernot execute my function once for every record I want to show in the list.What I want to do is pass an array of "keys" into a stored procedure andhave that procedure return one recordset with all of the records in. Sowhat I want to do is something like:CREATE PROCEDURE MySuperProcedure@MyArrayOfIDs (some way of specifying an array of integers),ASSELECT *FROM MyTableWHERE MyArrayOfIDs.ContainsTheInteger ( MyTable.ID )Obviously this syntax is not available. Is there another way of doing this?

Cannot Build This Custom Select Statement...

Jul 20, 2006

I am trying to allow a user the ability to search a database and select from various fields to search, such as Keywords and Filename. I tried building something like this:
SELECT     filenameFROM         pictableWHERE     (@searchby LIKE @searchwords)
It allows me to enter the two varables (keywords and test), but returns no rows. If I simply replace @searchby with 'keywords' (ensuring no spelling errors), then I get a return of one row. So this works:
SELECT     filenameFROM         pictableWHERE     (keywords LIKE @searchwords)
Can someone tell me what is going on? I have tried all sorts of quotes and parens to no avail.
Thanks in advance.

SELECT With GROUP BY And Build A List From Vales Not Shown

Apr 16, 2004

Hard to write a subject line to describe this one.

Anayway, I have a table with names and address plus an extra field noting a part number of product.

I'd like to build a SELECT string that will return one result for each name/address (uniques only in other words) and build a comma delimited field of all the part numbers for that name/address.

Example:

NAME ADDRESS PART NUMBER
John Smith 555 Main st., los angeles, ca 90003 5000
John Smith 555 Main st., los angeles, ca 90003 6650
Mike Jones 8569 West 18th Ave., San Diego, ca 1255
John Smith 555 Main st., los angeles, ca 90003 5144
Mike Jones 8569 West 18th Ave., San Diego, ca 2399

So I'd like my results to look like this:

NAME ADDRESS PARTS
John Smith 555 Main st., los angeles, ca 90003 5000,6650,5144
Mike Jones 8569 West 18th Ave., San Diego, ca 1255,2399

THanks in advance for any suggestions!

How Would I Send A String Array As A Integer Array?

Jun 25, 2007

I have a stored procedure that has a paramter that accepts a string of values. At the user interface, I use a StringBuilder to concatenate the values (2,4,34,35,etc.) I would send these value to the stored procedure. The problem is that the stored procedure doesn't allow it to be query with the parameter because the Fieldname, "Officer_UID" is an integer data type, which can't be query against parameter string type.
What would I need to do to convert it to an Integer array?
@OfficerIDs as varchar(200)
Select Officer_UID From Officers Where Officer_UID in (@OfficerIDs)
 Thanks

Error On Build Solution, If SSIS Project Is Part Of Build

Mar 22, 2006

Hello,

we have automated build on every night. In our solution is SSIS project, where each package is encrypted per password. We call build process per command line like this..

C:ProgrammeMicrosoft Visual Studio 8Common7IDEdevenv.exe (c:DevelopmentX3\X3.sln /build Release)' in 'c:DevelopmentProjectsDailyBuild

Through build process we get a error:

External Program Failed: C:ProgrammeMicrosoft Visual Studio 8Common7IDEdevenv.exe (return code was 1):

We think a reason is, that on build of SSIS project must be entered a password. You can wonder for what we need that SSIS packages are part of our build. We hope that on build process is also created Deployment Utility, if so set in dtproject.user. Is it so? Is there any way to create Deployment utility on automated build process? Can be a password provided pre command line?

with best regards

Dynamically Select Column

Sep 29, 2004

Hey all. I'm trying to create a stored proc that will update a variable column, depending on the parameter I pass it. Here's the stored proc:

CREATE PROCEDURE VoteStoredProc
(
@PlayerID int,
@VoteID int,
@BootNumber nvarchar(50)
)
AS

DECLARE @SQLStatement varchar(255)
SET @SQLStatement = 'UPDATE myTable SET '+ @BootNumber+'='+ @VoteID + ' WHERE (PlayerID = '+ @PlayerID +')'

EXEC(@SQLStatement)

GO

I get the following error:

Syntax error converting the nvarchar value 'UPDATE myTable SET Boot3=' to a column of data type int

The update statement is good, because if I use the stored proc below (hard-coded the column), it works fine.

CREATE PROCEDURE VoteStoredProc
(
@PlayerID int,
@VoteID int,
@BootNumber nvarchar(50)
)
AS

UPDATE
myTable
SET
Boot3 = @VoteID
WHERE
PlayerID = @PlayerID
GO

Is there a way to dynamically choose a column/field to select from? Or is my syntax incorrect..?
Thanks!

SELECT - Dynamically Determine Fields To Return

Dec 6, 2004

Hello,

I m writing a stored procedure to query a table Population that has the following fields - CityId, CityName, Plus0, Plus10, Plus20, Plus30, Plus40, Plus50, Plus60, Plus70, Plus80. The field Plus0 contains the number of people of age > 0 living in the city, Plus10 contains the number of people of age > 10 living in the city and so on. Given the city id and age groups like 20To40, 50To60, 40Plus, etc., I should be able to query the number of people in the city corresponding to the requested age group. Note that if the requested age group was 20To60, I need to make use of only 2 fields Plus20 and Plus60 in the table to compute this value. And if the requested age group was 40Plus, then I need only the value in the field Plus40. The problem is that a wide variety of age groups can be requested like 0Plus, 10Plus, ... , 80Plus, 0To10, 0To20, 0To30, .... 70To80.

Which is the most effecient way to handle this ?

1. Have a stored procedure that returns all the fields even though only 1 or 2 of them would be actually used ?

In this case, if I returned data for a large number of cities then there would be a lot of unnecessary information that was returned by the query. Lots of data would be passed through the network though most of it would not be used.

2. Have a stored procedure that takes in parameters @Plus0, @Plus10, @Plus20, .. @Plus80 that are bits indicating whether the field was required or not and then using a CASE statement to return values for a field only if the corresponding bit parameter was set, and returning NULL if the corresponding bit paramter was not set ?

In this case, I would be returning NULL for all those fields that were not required for a particular age group. This would save some network bandwidth, wouldn't it ?

3. Pass in the age group itself (ex: 0To20) as a parameter to the stored procedure and have lots of IF statements, one for each age group, that return only the fields that are needed for that age group.

This leads to a lot of code repitition.

4. Use a similar approach as above but use dynamic SQL queries to avoid code repitition.

But using dynamic SQL queries can affect the performance of the stored procedure as they need to be compiled each time.

5. Any other possible approaches ??

Looking forward to your responses,

Thanks much,

bmgun.

Does Reporting Services Allow You To Select A Dataset Dynamically?

Apr 30, 2007

I have a remote report ...
I need to call one of two stored procedures depending on which parameters were passed to the report. (Both stored procedures return the same fields.)
Does SQL Reporting Services allow you to switch the dataset or stored procedure name dynamically? If so, where do I put the logic? Right now I have it working with one stored procedure.
I'm thinking that I should just make one stored procedure that takes all parameters and calls one of the other two stored procedures. Do I have any options besides this?

Thanks in advance!

Want A Stored Procedure To Dynamically Select Views Pulled From A Table.

Feb 1, 2007

I am building a dashboard features that allows user to select reports from a dropdownlist. It is pulling from a table called Reports (cols: ReportID, Description, sqlView) In this Report table the report is associated to a view that queries the report.
And the user's selections are stored in table called UserReport (cols: userID, ReportID, createDt) .
I need to get a Dataset to contain datables of all reports selected. (for example a user select 3 reports, the dataset should contain 3 datables that represent the report).
I want to accomplish this by create a store procedure that queries the Reports table and then dynamically executes the views that related to the user selected reports. Can anyone give me an example on how to create the storeprocedure?
Thanks,

Nested Table Concept In SQL Server

Is there anything like TABLE( ) function to select from nested table as in Oracle ?

( like the above query used in Oracle PL/SQL and 'nested_table_datatype' is a table datatype created in Oracle using 'create type ...' syntax )

Please give the equivalent for above...

Enterprise Product Develepment (concept To Rollout)

Apr 2, 2004

Hi

I am involved in a product development and want to understand the current best practices from the conception to product rollout. I have few questions. Appreciate your help and suggestions

Our project in a nutshell: Our team has developed the apps. using GUI-Oracle Forms & DBMS-Oracle 8i/9i with weblogic, Corba, windows 2000 server environment. It’s meant for 1000s of users with million of data. We are trying to integrate additional services/capability - messaging (wireless, chat etc.). As per the initial plan we have a central database and users will be using a local footprint database. The deltas (the changes) will be synchronized with the central database at a frequency say daily or nightly... We are concerned that having the database at the users desktop could leave the door wide-open for others to take a look at our code/design...

Questions:

1. UML case tools-- What’s the best tool available in the market as we want to revisit the design phase and identify the things that have been missed out in the prototype-(which was developed by a third-party)?
So far we have used ERWIN to extract the data model...

2. How can we eliminate the need to have a local footprint database at the users desktop.?. Since there is a lots of data, retrieving the data via internet could be very slow for users? (hope this is the case!) That’s what led our team to think of having a local database at the users desktop. Someone suggested to use the data files or caching the data.. Appreciate if anyone shed some light on this.. Is there a better way to do it?

3. Client connectivity: What are the softwares needed at the users PC. Since we use Oracle Forms to develop the application, do we need to install the oracle clients at the users PCs? how to establish the connectivity from the Users PC to our server and to the database. IF we have to use the oracle client, does that require licenses for every User? What do we need to consider from the network connectivity stand point.

4. Application Rollout: how to package our finished product - application exe that is installable across wide array of environment. (we thought of install shield). how do we test it for accuracy etc.,

5. Database optimization: In addition to DBA help, is there any product or proceedures to ensure dataModel optimization, SQL query performance etc.,

Appreciate you sharing your valuable thoughts on this with us..
