I know we can use sp_spaceused to get the size of the table. But my question is diiferent. I have a table with 50 columns and approx 2 million rows in it. I wanted to know which column is taking most of the space.

For example I have 2 tables that contain the same image, but the archive table is not displaying the same as the main. I am thinking the image file was corrupted somehow but don't know how to check this out.

SQL 2012 :: Datetime To Date Datatype Increasing Index Size?
Mar 6, 2014I have a database which is centered around two date tables (approx. 5.5 million records each). We are finally making the big leap from SQL Server 2005 to 2012. The data is currently stored as datetime, and we are hoping to take advantage of the new date datatype, since the time component is not needed.
The first table has 13 different date columns. In testing on the 2012 server I have changed 3 columns so far, and have seen that changing the datatype to date is actually increasing the Index size and not affecting the data size. Only 3 of the columns are associated with indexes, and modifying a non-indexed column still increased the index size. I am running the Disk Usage by Table report to view the sizes.

commad.Parameters.Add("@SomeID", SqlDbType.Int, 4)
I know it may seem silly, but I have to ask:
Will specifying ths size (i.e. 4) eventually stop the auto-icnrement of the underlying primary key SomeID in the SQL Server 2005 database?
What restriction, if any, does this place if the next SomeID value is 10000, which is 5 digits? or 999999, which is 6 digits?

Table Size - Trying To Find Out Space Used
Jul 8, 2002I'm trying to determine how much space some tables use (SQL2000), and I found 2 suggestions posted earlier, but can't get them to work for me.
The first was
"Right click on the DB in Enterprise Manager, select view then taskpad."
When I try that, I get some of the tables displayed with the info I want, but I can't see them all and can't scroll down beyond the first 22 tables in the database.
The second suggestion:
exec sp_msforeachtable @command1="print '?'",@command2="sp_spaceused '?'"
It says "command copleted successfully, but where does the output to this go ?? Is there something other than "print" I should use ?
The grid pane is empty.

Mar 27, 2008We're looking at optimizing some of our tables because we have indexes on columns that are not used. So for example we might have a table that has 6GB of data and 4GB in indexes (according to sp_spaceused). We need to know how much of the 4GB of indexes is consumed by each of the indexes individually. I've tried dbcc showcontig, but that doesn't tell me the amount of space used by the index that I run it for.
Second (and by far not as important), is there a way to determine how much space is being consumed by data in a specific column. The original creator of some of the tables added an incrementing identity column that is used no where in the system. I'd like to be able to say..."If we drop this column we'll save XXX in space."
Knowing the index space is more critical, the column space would be nice but not necessary.

Jul 30, 2007Hello,How do I change the datatype of a column in a CSV file. Preferably in the select statement (apparently Cast, Convert, & Replace functions don't work when selecting from a CSV). I have a page where users upload their CSV files to and then I use SQLBulkCopy to insert all the records into my sql table. The problem is with columns of money data. EX: "$2,000" >> 2000The CSV file interprets the "$2,000" as a string of text. How do I convert it to a decimal so I can insert it into my sql database?
