How Can I Tell What Protocols Are Enabled For The Client?
Jun 21, 2004
If TCP/IP is the only protocol enabled on the General tab of the Client Network Utility, does it mean that other protocols are disabled and will not be used in communicating to SQL Servers on other machines?
In this case, should the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftMSSQLServer ClientSuperSocketNetLib only contain the Tcp entry?
If I have alias setup to use other protocol such as Named Pipes, does it mean that the alias cannot be connected since Named Pipes is not enabled?
Thank you for any help.

I have Installed MSDE SP3a (sql2kdesksp3.exe) on a Windows 2003 Web Edition Server.
The security mode is win/sql. I can log in with both Win NT and SQL security localy, from both EM and MSDE manager.
(in the end of the installation, no dialog show, and the agent does not start automaticly, started on restart)
The MSDE is installed from cmd, with no SAPWD but SecurityMode=SQL.
But from another client on the network (same domain), I can´t connect. I get the "SQL Server Does Not Exist or Access Denied" Error Message
I have check the regestry for the tcpip port settings. And its not 0.
I have read some other MSDE related threads, but no luck.
Any hints what to check new, to try to solve this problem ?
peace.

Hello,
I need to find out what protocols are used by our client to connect to the SQL Server ?
And is there a way through which we can say that the client are using these protocols, from the Enterprise Manager ?
One more question i have is, I have a SQL server Installation at home on Win98. Why can't i rename the Server Name. I tried using the Sp sp_Dropserver,sp_addserver.
Any help would be of great help.
Thanks,

My ASP website is located on one server & the MS SQL 2000 which is located on a separate physical server behind a separate firewall.
My question is related to Application Communication. I want to know how do the Servers exchange data with one another: which (logical connections to use, which protocols to use)?

I am having a problem with one of the PC's That remotely connects to my server.
When you go to connection properties (under Connect to server in the Management studio) on the users machine there are no options under Network Protocol only the <default> option.
All the rest of our PC's have the option of choosing TCP/IP , named pipe etc etc..
This computer is not able to connect to the server remotely however it can/does when it is on the network.
I figure its because it is attempting to connect over named pipe rather than TCP/IP but i cannot change this in the connection options as it is missing.
And as far as i know on the server i have the default set to TCP/IP but I am really unsure of this.
If anyone can help me out with this i would greatly appreciate it.

SQL Server Configuraton Manager,
Protocols for sqlexpress,
TCP/IP
When I initially installed SQL Server 2005 Express, it automatically picked up all the IP addresses (60 of them) I had on the server, and filled them in under TCP/IP - IP adresses Tab.
I recently took those IPs off the server and replaced them with 30 new IP addresses. Is there a way to have SQL Server 2005 Express read the Network configuration on the server and take the old IPs off the TCP/IP - IP addresses tab and put the new one's there?
Thanks,
Bill

I am trying to set up SQL Server 2005 to use a test certificate from Thawte for SSL encryption. I have installed the certificate in the local computer, current user and service account's personal certificates folders. I have also installed the root certificate in the Trusted Root Certification Authorities folders of each. All this was done using MMC.
However, when I go to tell SQL Server to use the certificate, no certificates show up in the drop down box. I am using SQL Server Configuration Manager and doing the right-clickPropertiesCertificate steps shown in multiple KB and forum articles.
I have also checked the registry entry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLServerSuperSocketNetLibCertificate. It is blank, which tells me SQL Server should be looking in the certificate store.
If I simply set the ForceEncryption flag, SQL Server starts up OK and generates a self-signed certificate. Using that, the session does get encrypted. However, I need to use a third party certificate.
I have hit a brick wall and am at a loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi All,
When i run the command,
use master
go
sp_configure 'awe enabled',1
go
reconfigure
go
I got the output,
name : awe enabled
minimum: 0
Maximum: 1
config_value: 0
run_value: 0
From the value of config_value ,it mean that the "awe" is not enabled.
But, when we see the System Configuration:
OS --- Win 2003 Standard sp1
Sql server 2005 sp1 ( I have only one instance )
System configuration = 3.83 GB of RAM
The total is 3.83GB of RAM, but When i right click the sql server
instance , select 'Properties' and then on the 'General' tab , i
see 'Memory' assigned to that instance as = 3927 (MB)
Does this mean that, someone already has enabled AWE option. That's
the reason its showing memory = 3927 MB. (or) i have to enable it
externally.
Can someone reply as soon as possible plz.
Thanks.

I've looked in several books in addition to the online SQL Server documentation, and I can't find a way to determine whether or not a trigger is enabled or disabled. I know how to enable/disable, I just can't figure out the current status of the trigger. It's not returned in sp_help or sp_helptrigger, and there's no indication in Enterprise Manager of a trigger's status. Does anyone out there know how to do this?

-- turn on clr
sp_configure 'clr enabled', 1
GO

and get this error:

The configuration option 'clr enabled' does not exist, or it may be an advanced option.
When I run surface area config, I select Configuration for Features, but under MSSQLSERVER, I do not see the entry for Database Engine that should have the CLR Integration under it.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

While reading (I have come across what seems to be maybe a powerful and useful feature) available in MSAS and thus this related question:
Can someone briefly explain the use of this feature and how it can come in handy.
So far I have skimmed through BOL and it says that "Only parent-child dimensions support this dimension characteristic" i.e. Write-enabled feature.
Thanks.

I have a VB6 application from which I want to create and schedule a jobs. The individual jobs should run once and be deleted when succesfully finished. Almost everything works fine. Just curious to hear if anyone else has experiences this or knows a reason
why it maybe should be this way...
I have some jobs that are disabled accourding to the Job Activity Monitor view in Mgmt Studio. However, if I open the schedules details, this view says Enabled. Can a schedule be enabled for a job, even if the job in itself is
disabled maybe?
But, I can't see any enable/disable flag in the sysjobschedules table,
only in sysjobs.

We are running application on Ms SQL Server connecting to PowerBuilder 7.0.3, using MSS Microsoft SQL Server 6.X driver.
We have recently migrated the SQL Server from 2000 to 2005 SP2, in which databases are still at compatability level 80.
The application runs perfectly for one week, but later we received some occassional reports from users that database connection breaks after a
certain idle period. Below are the errors, usually error 1 appears before error 2.
Error 1
A database error has occured.
Database error code: 10025
Database error message:
Select error: Possible network error: Write to SQL Server Failed. General network error. Check your documentation.
Error 2
A database error has occured.
Database error code: 10005
Database error message:
Select error: DBPROCESS is dead or not enabled.
We couldn't find any related errors in the SQL Server log. Does anyone has the idea of what's wrong or how to trace the connection brokerage?
