Windows Authentication - Connecting To A DB As A Different User In Management Studio

Jun 28, 2007

Is there a way to connect to database using Windows authentication as a different user than what you've logged in with to your desktop?

For example:

I log on to my desktop as mydomainme. I'm developing queries using Management Studio against a database (on another server) where mydomainme doesn't have access, but the admins have granted access to mydomainJobs1. I have the password for mydomainJobs1, and I'm hoping I can connect to the database using that account without having to log-off my local desktop as mydomainme and then re-login using mydomainJobs1.

The analogy in the file/share-permissions world would be using "net use" from a command prompt:

net use \SomeServer /User:mydomainJobs1 jobs1password

Anything similar for SSMS?

Cannot Connect Remotely To SQLExpress Via SQL Server Management Studio Express

Oct 31, 2007

Hi all, I'm having a little trouble connecting to a SQLExpress instance on a remote domain using SQL Server Management Studio Express.I've read that by default the program is set up locally only, so have edited the Surface Area Configuration.  It only gives me the option to edit 'Services and Connections' on the localhost, but have edited the Remote Connections to use TCP/IP and Named Pipes. In the Management Studio, I enter the server name, and login credentials.  On the Connection Properties tab I changed the network protocol to TCP/IP though everytime I attempt to connect I get the following error message:  Any help would be greatly appreciated. Rich

SQL 2005 Management Studio Authentication Problem

Apr 2, 2008

We have a weird problem where when one of our users selects to login into a database using Windows Authentication the wrong login information is passed to the DB.

We have two domains (A & B), each with a SQL Server running in them. We have workstations in domain B that the users log into and run Management Studio. When connecting to the database server in domain B using Windows Authentication the correct credentials are passed and everything works great (Busername). In fact, using Windows Authentication to the server in domain A works fine also (Busername) for all but one of our users. For our one user however, when logged into domain B (Busername) and using Management Studio to connect to the server in domain A with Windows Authentication she gets and error saying 'Access Denied: Ausername is an invalid login'. Before connecting the login box actualy reads 'Busername' in the username box (greyed out of course). When looking at the database log from domain A it has an entry saying 'Failed login for Ausername'.

I've never seen this before, in fact I've seen a lot of posts asking if this was possible but the answer always was it isn't. Does anyone know how to fix this?

SQL Sever 2005 Management Studio - Connect As Different Windows User

Jun 22, 2007

I want to connect to a SQL server from my workstation using the application in the Subject, but I need to connect as a different Windows user. Basically, I login to my workstation with my "Joe User" account, but for servers I used my "Joe Admin" account for security purposes. However, the Management console autofills in my workstation username when I select "Windows authentication" for the connection, and grays out the username/password fields so that I cannot specify another set of credentials.

Is there a way to change this behavior? Otherwise I will need to termserv into a server using my administrative account, install the management software there, and then begin the process. That is a lot of unecessary overhead that I would like to avoid.

Thank You,

Can't Access Reporting Services In Management Studio Or Web Interface Using Windows Integrated Security

May 12, 2008

I know from searching this forum that there have been many variations of the issue I'm currently suffering, but I haven't found anything quite like mine or a solution to solve it. The issue I'm running into is that I am unable to log on to Reporting Services using Management Studio or the web interface when Windows Integrated Security is enabled. I have full functionality using basic security, but the risks involved make it impossible to deploy basic authentication out into production. The error I'm receiving in Management Studio is The request failed with HTTP status 401: Unauthorized. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.UI.RSClient). I recieve the same error when I try the web interface.

I've looked the most recent logfile in WindowsSystem32LogFilesW3SVC1 and these entries match up to the time I attempted my authentication.

I tried to highlight one of each of the HTTP errors I am getting. 401.2 and 401.1 are the ones I kind of expected, but have no idea why I'm getting them. The 500 0 error is a bit troubling, because unless I'm mistaken thats a server side error.

Here's my current setup. As far as I can tell, I've done everything to set up correctly for Windows Integerated security.

My Specs
The server machine running all SQL 2005 services. It resides in a domain. All Clients are in the same domain.

Intel Dual Processor 3.20 gig Xenon

Windows Server 2003 w/ SP2

Microsoft Sql Server 2005 w/ SP2
Reporting Services Setup
The virtual directories Reports and ReportServer are set to Windows Integrated Security with Anonymous Access disabled. All other checkboxes in Directory Security are unchecked. For permissions in Reports, I have:

Administrators (servernameAdministrators) - Full Control

ASP.NET Machine Account - Modify, Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read, Write

Authenticated Users - Modify, Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read, Write

Creator Owner - No permissions

Domain Users - Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read

SQLServer2005ReportingServices]WebServiceUsers$... - Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read

SQLServer2005ReportServerUsers$... - Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read

SYSTEM - Full Control

Users (CompNameUsers) - Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read
In ReportServer I have the same permissions except Authenticated Users is absent.

At one point, I even added the account Everybody and gave it full control, and I still recieved a HTTP 401 error. Any help at what I might be missing would be a godsend.

Thanks.

Sql Authentication = Fast./ Windows Authentication = V.slow!

Mar 25, 2004

Hello,

(Using win2k, sqlserver2k, framework 1.1)
I have an fairly data-heavy application that uses Windows authentication (Trusted connection/aspnet account) to connect to Sql Server. The site uses IIS basic authentication.

On the dev server everything works fine but when I move to the live server things get strange and it starts to crawl along. (Pages load OK but then it just crawls as it loads the datagrids etc. Sometimes it brings back incomplete/incorrect data )

BUT When I use Sql Authentication to connect to Sql Server and there is no problem at all!

Ok, there is something obviously wrong with the live server (which is identical setup to dev)but I dont know where to start.

Any ideas??

Using SQL Authentication And Windows Integrated Authentication Concurrently

May 15, 2006

Hi all,

I've got two applications which both have a database on my MS SQL 2000 server. The problem is, one application must use Windows Integrated Authentication (which it is currently using and cannot be changed) whilst the other application which I'm trying to configure must use a SQL password.

Since the server has already been configured to use Windows Integrated Authentication for the existing database and application, how do I configure the other database to use the SQL password?

Thanks.

Authentication An Application Using Windows Integrated Authentication

May 12, 2006

Hi all,

My work is using a shared application
which accesses a MSSQL 2000 database. To access the application, the
folder on the Windows 2003 Server is shared and users can access the
folder through a shared drive.

For the application to access the
database, it uses an ODBC connection to the MSSQL server which
originally used the SA password.

We have recently switched to using
Windows Integrated Authentication because we believe it offers a
higher level of security. However the only way in which we have been
able to enable this is to add the windows users to the SQL server.

The problem with this is that the
application sets permissions for individual users on what records
they can see within the database. We have found that by adding the
windows users to the SQL Server, they can bypass the permissions the
set by the application by simply using any application that can use
an ODBC connection, such as Enterprise Manager, and see all the
database.

One way around this would be to set up
domains of users with access privileges to the tables which reflect
the permissions set by the application, and configuring a view of the
data so they may only see the records that they have permissions to.
However to do this would require a high administrative cost to ensure
that changes made in the application are reflected in the privileges
of the SQL server.

Instead, is there a way the SQL server
can authenticate that the ODBC connection is coming from the correct
application using Windows Integrated Authentication?

This would allow the applcation to
determine security, and stop users from connecting to the SQL server
using other applications.

Alternatively, can the SQL server,
using Windows Integrated Authentication, also ask the application to
supply a username and password?

Any help with this matter would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Using Windows Authentication V/s Mixed Authentication

This application also has a SYSTEM DSN under ODBC through which it accesses the database. For the application to access this database, should I only use SA (as my SQL instance is configured to use Mixed Authentication) or can I use Windows Authentcation too...

If I should only use SA, do we have a documentation which talks about this.

SQLEXPRESS Database Ownership, Sa, And Authentication Troubles

Dec 25, 2005

I installed VS2005 on my laptop at the office and of course, got the default instance of SQLEXPRESS. When I take my laptop home and log in (I use my NETWORKlogin login everywhere), I can't authenticate to use the database -- it doesn't like my login unless I'm physically at my office.

So, thinking I'm clever, I changed my SQLEXPRESS instance to use 'SQL Server and Windows Authentication mode' and tried to use the 'sa' login in my connection string. Login failed for 'sa' and since I had never set a password (yes, I tried using a blank) I executed the following query on my db:

exec sp_password @new='WHATEVERPASSWORD', @loginame = 'sa'

The query works (?) but it my connection string doesn't and I'm still unable to use the management tool when not on the original network.

So, I thought I'd add a new, super secret special user, but alas, that has completely escaped me. That frightens me a bit because I'd really like to be able to deploy my database to my web host and trust the my connection strings will work.

So, here are my questions:

1. Can I set up my instance so that I don't have to be on the network on which I installed it in order for it to recognize me (since it's self contained on my machine)? If so, how?

2. How do I create new SQL users?

3. Has the connection string changed significantly, and consequently, am I missing something fundamental in my attempts to connect? If someone could toss out a working SQL Server Express 2005 connection string that doesn't use Windows authentication, that would be really appreciated.

Here's some info from my box, if it helps.

Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express      9.00.1399.00
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC)      2000.085.1117.00 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)

Microsoft Internet Explorer      6.0.2900.2180

Report Manager With Forms Authentication. Report Server With Windows Authentication.

Feb 1, 2008

Hi.

I wonder if it is possible to set forms authentication for report manager but leave report server "as it is". I need to authenticate users from external LDAP and can't use windows authentication for report manager, but I would also like to leave report server open for anonymous users. In that way authenticated administrators could create reports which anonymous users could read.

I tested the Security Extension Sample and got it working when I rewrote the authentication part with my own LDAP authentication.

If I have understood correctly, the report manager is just application inside report server so is it possible to use forms authentication with one application but still leave the report server with Windows authentication?

Visual Studio Database File And SQL Server Management Studio Express Question

Mar 17, 2007

I have a database in my "App_Data" folder of my visual studio project.  I can view it fine in Visual Studio's built-in tools for managing a database attached to a solution.  However i recently started playing around with the SQL Server Management Studio Express program.  When i attach my database to Management Studio, and try to run my program it crashes.  I think it might be a permissions error?!? When i detatch it and reattach it in visual studio it runs fine again.   Any suggestions? ThanksJason

Visual Studio 2005 Standard And SQL Server Management Studio?

Sep 4, 2007

I am new to visual studio and I am still not sure of all its components and features.

I installed visual studio 2005 standard edition but cannot find SQL Server Management Studio?

I guess this must be because it is not included with Visual studio 2005 standard. Is it included with VS 2005 professional?

I want to add pictures of products to my shopping site using an SQL database and I’ve been told that SQL Server Management studio is required as it is a graphical tool.

How would I go about obtaining the SQL server management studio. There seems to be different versions of SQL server that it is confusing to know which one to purchase.

Will the SQL server 2005 version that comes with Visual studio standard be sufficient for me now right? I want to create a shopping site with hundreds, perhaps even thousands of products. I want to use an SQL server 2005 database. The database will include ‘dynamically generated’ product images if that is the correct terminology.

My goodness, it seems I still have so much to learn.

Thanks
