How Do I Associate A Sql Server Login With The SQLAgentUserRole?

Aug 21, 2007

Currently a 2005 login has been granted sysadmin because I can not figure out how to grant the same login the SqlAgentUserRole. I thought I would use SSMS but there must be a trick. The role only exists in the msdb database, which the login has not been granted explicit access to. And the login does not appear in the list of Role Members or its sub windows. This should be real easy and intuitive . . .

Thanks!

Re-associate Server Login With Database User?

Nov 22, 2004

Hi all, I've had this issue in the past but dealt with it in a way that I don't think is correct:

Let's say I have a database on Server1. On Server1 I create a login and a user on the database. Now I have User1 with a login authorization on Server1 as well as a user within my database. If I detach that database now, and re-attach it on a different server, User1 exists. Of course, on the new Server2 User1 does not have authorization to login. I've deleted the existing user in the database and then re-created a login on the server, cascading through with the GUI setup to re-create the user within the database, too. Of course this gets ugly if the user has objects within the database. If I create a server login with the same name as the database user the login is not associated with the user too, correct?

I'd like to know the way that I can create a server authorization tied to the existing database user without dropping that database user, preferably within Enterprise Manager.

Thanks all,

MC

Best Way To Associate One To Many Setup...

May 8, 2008

Hi. We're trying to setup a new case management system and I'm having a problem trying to store some of the information. I think I know how to go about it; however, I'm not sure if it's right.

We have two tables: Cases and Clients. The cases table stores relevant case information like case number, case type, etc. The Clients table stores information like name, address, phone number, email, etc.

What is the best way to associate these two tables together? I'm assuming I need a third table. Right? Thanks!

Question: Re-associate Dbo With Sa??

Dec 28, 2006

Hi all.Running SQL2K SP4 on W2K3 Standard, SP4.I have just refreshed a database on one server with a backup fromanother. The database had existed previously on the target server, andI am just refreshing its contents. I used the following approach1) From the target server, create a SQL script with users and roles2) From the source server, back up the db3) Transfer the file4) Restore the db, checking the location of the data and log files toensure correctness5) Remove orphaned users6) Run in the users/roles script generated in step 17) Run in a canned script containing object-level grants.I've done this dozens of times in other databases, but something alittle unusual has occurred here:My dbo user is orphaned. Normally it's associated with the 'sa' login,but at this point there is no associated user.I can see why this has happened - on the source db, the dbo user hasbeen associated with a non-default login.And, many of the objects in the db are owned by dbo.The only viable option I see is to change the ownership of theseobjects, drop dbo, re-add it with the association to sa, and reassertthe object-level grants.But what I would prefer is some way to change the association of thedbo user, to associate it with 'sa' without the need to drop andrecreate.Can anyone suggest an alternative strategy to associate a login and auser after-the-fact?Thanks much for all input!BD

Can You Associate A Task/job With A Report?

Aug 16, 2007

Hi there,

I'm wondering if there is a way to associate a job or task of some kind (i.e. SQL Agent job or SSIS package) with the generation of a report?

I have a need to provide an on-demand report that somehow initiates the updating of its data source prior to generation. In other words, I'd like the report to do *something* that can start an external process (external to the report) and wait for that process to complete before proceeding with the report generation.

As you can probably tell, updating the data source is expensive. It is normally scheduled along with a scheduled report, but I'd like the report to be runnable on demand when that is (rarely) the need, and I'd also like to guarantee the data source is updated when the scheduled report runs, which I can only do if I can somhow create a dependency between the updating process and the report generation.

Any ideas?

(The only way I can see to execute code synchronously from the report is to build a custom data processing extension/provider, which is fairly absurd.)

Thanks
Sam

Associate Each Product With Multiple Bikes (was How Should I.....)

Aug 26, 2006

Hello, im brand new to these forums, scrolled through a bit of the forum(mainly trying to figure out how to go about what im about to ask) and it seems like a good forum...anyways onto my question.

i am in need of ideas/know-how on how to structure a database like such:

its an online motorcycle accessories website, and this is the information i need to store in the db(basically these will be my tables in the db)

bike manufacturer
bike name
products

now my main question is how would i structure those tables so i can get this effect.

each product in the product table needs to have a bike associated to it, 99% of the time it will be more than one bike associated to it, so how would i go about doing that?

originally i had set it up with the bikes name being different columns in the products table with a bit type set to 1 if that product was available for that bike and 0 if it wasnt available. however as you are probably already thinking that isnt the best way to do that.

so what is the best way?

any info at all would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance

Associate User's New Objects With Data File

Apr 20, 2007

I'm currently running SQL Server 2005, and have been exploring the feasibility of grouping users to use a default file group and data file. This would be to group a set of users to have their new tables reside in a specific data file. I only see mechanisms for moving an already existing objects into a file group or to set the entire databases default file group--not a user level association or dynamic assignment of the default for that user, script, etc.

It's not looking good.

I'm looking for confimration that it's not possible or leads on doing so.

Thanx in advance

Aspclassic On IIS7 SQL 2005. ODBC SQL Server Driver[SQL Server]Cannot Open Database Requested By The Login. The Login Failed

Apr 16, 2008

Hi all,

Have just tried my sql server 2005 connected asp classic website on II7 for the first time and have gotten some errors.
First off I have unchecked show friendly errors in IE and have enabled ASP to send error messages to the browser.

My error I get is when I execute a basic .asp page:

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot open database "mydatabasename" requested by the login. The login failed.
/index.asp, line 10 which is dbConnect.Open cstring

from this peice of code:

sub dbOpen()
set dbConnect = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
cstring = "DSN=mysqldsn; Trusted Connection=yes"
dbConnect.Open cstring
end sub

I have gone into ODBC and have setup both a user dsn and file dsn that equals mysqldsn and points to my database (I know you only need to set up one DSN but I'm not sure which)

I also notice under mywebsite home panel there is a connection string option. Do I do anything with that?

Definatley a lot more to it than XP's II6!

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

SQL Server 2014 :: Can Get User Windows Login When Using Server Login Authentication

Apr 26, 2015

Oracle and Teradata are able to capture the windows/client login that connects to their database with a functionnal ID.I've searched around and I don't think MS SQL can do this...I administer SQL 2014 server and also SAS Enterprise guide product. I've created sql server logins for several teams so everyone shares the same sql server login which is used to bind the SAS library to my SQL server database.

However, when looking at activity monitor, I can't drill down to which user is executing a particular query. I only see the SQL login which is share amongs 200 other folks.On the other hand, when they connect from SAS to Oracle or Teradata, I can see the shared login + additionally their windows NT login used to connect to SAS which is awesome....they can't fool me by using a shared/funcionnal ID....i still see who's using that ID...

Hi,

I have a script component. What it does, it queries the a table using a connectionstring assigned to it in the Connection Managers Editor (which is an ado.net adapter). this works fine when i'm using a windows login in the ado.net connection manager. But when i changed my connection to use SQL server login, I encounter this error:

SQL Server 2008 :: Login Failed For Login (DomainNameUserName) Due To Trigger Execution

Sep 23, 2015

All the logins with sysadmin role are locked out in one of the SQL server. Also in that instance Logon trigger is implemented which allows only certain users with Windows Authentication to logon.

This server is converted into single user mode by using command prompt. Now we are attempting to connect to SQLServer using command sqlcmd -S FTCPU3239 (since we do not have any other login) and create a new login with sysadmin role but are refused due to logon trigger. it says Login failed for login 'DomainNameUserName' due to trigger execution.

SQL Security :: Users Are Able To Login To Server Without Any Login Names Or Being Part Of A Group

Jun 5, 2015

I have a server that has 20 databases . I have tested with few users with different level of access and all of them were able to connect to the server and also see, select, update , delete from a particular database which is kind of weird because they do not have a user login associated or mapped to that database. I checked and no user is part of any group in AD that would give them permission to connect . I need a query that would find the permission path of a user. I already queried with xp_logininfo but I am not getting any thing.

Been looking through the forums for a solution to this problem.I already tried granting access through statements such as:exec sp_grantloginaccess N1'machineNameASPNET'But they don't seem to work.. i vaguely remember seeing somewhere a DOS command line statement that grants access to the ASPNET_WP and that fixed my problem before on another computer.. but this is a new computer and i forgot to write down the command.Can anyone help explain and propose a solution to my problem. Moved Aspnetdb To SQL Server - What Permissions Do I Need To Give The ASP IIS Service Account For That? (Getting: Cannot Open Database Aspnetdb Requested By The Login. The Login Failed.)

May 12, 2008

I am getting the error:
Cannot open database "aspnetdb" requested by the login. The login failed.
When I browse to my ASP.NET 3.5 LINQ web application on the IIS 6.0 server on Server 2003.
I imagine this is because while I granted SQL Server 2005 login and permissions to my database that the application stores its data in, I did NOT grant any rights to the service account the IIS Application Pool uses for its identity to the aspnetdb database on SQL Server which is where all my roles information is stored at.
My question is what are the MINIMUM permissions needed for this database so it can perform its roles related functions?
I'm using Windows Authentications with the SQL Role provider for authorization.

Thank you.

EDIT: I think I only need to open the aspnetdb database and add my login to the aspnet_Roles_FullAccess role.  Is that correct?

How To Connect To Sql Server As Other's Window Login Rather Than User's Window Login Thorugh ASP.NET.

Dec 14, 2006

Dear members,

In MSDN, it says that it is recommended to use windows authentication to connect to SQL Server rather than use mixed authentication.

I create user deltasqluser on windows OS, and I specify in my webform ASP.NET script below :

protected System.Web.UI.WebControls.Label Label1;
private string _connString = @"data source=deltasql2000;initial catalog=northwind;integrated security=false;user id=deltasqluser";
/*
comment : I login to my windows as deltakoronx, and I want to every user (including me), connected to sql server through IIS, will be identified as deltasqluser not as user's login (impersonate)
*/
private void Page_Load(object sender, System.EventArgs e)
{
SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(_connString);
SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand();
cmd.Connection = conn;
cmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text;
cmd.CommandText = "select suser_sname()";

conn.Open();

string userName = cmd.ExecuteScalar() as string;
conn.Close();
conn.Close();
Label1.Text = userName;
}

at web.config, I add :
<identity impersonate="false" userName="deltasqluser" password="" />

at IIS webApplication1's properties, tab "Directory Security", at "Authentication and access control" section, I checked "enable anonymous access" with user : DELTAIUSR_DELTA and checked "Integrated Windows Authentication",

at query analyzer, I login as "sa" and execute script below :
exec sp_grantdbaccess 'deltasqluser','northwind'

when I run the ASP.NET script, error at conn.Open(); with error message :
Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE'.

What should I do so that IIS login to SQL Server as user deltasqluser not as "NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE" ?

Regards,

Koronx

Cannot Open Database XXXX Requested By Login. The Login Failed. Login Failed For User 'xxx'

Mar 18, 2007

hi,
 so i have a new box and I'm trying to get my websites and SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition working on it, but the pages give me the following error when I try to load them:
"Cannot Open Database "XXXX" requested by login.  The login failed.  Login failed for user 'xxx'"
Everything seems exactly the same settings and user-wise from my old box to my new one, but nevertheless everything I've tried gives me the same error.
I've tried creating new users in SQL Server and giving them appropriate permissions to my database.  I've even tried just using the built in 'sa' account.  Nothing seems to change the error, except when I give it the incorrect password then it just says 'login failed'
This leads me to believe that i'm successfully logging into the SQL Server, but it doesn't want to give me access to the database I'm requesting access too.  But "apparently" the account i'm using should have access to the database.  If nothing else the 'sa' account should, but that didn't work either.
I'm stumped.  Any ideas?

Error : Cannot Open User Default Database. Login Failed. Login Failed For User 'server/user'

Nov 22, 2007

i'm using the Enterpirse library logger to write logs into a database.
When choosing connection string i choose the database i want in the "connection properties" dialog box and
push 'Test connection' button.
everything goes well.

then i open the SQL Server Management studio express and connect to the databse to check some things,
from that point on , when i push the 'Test Connection' button in the Enterprise library i get the error:

"cannot open user default database. Login failed. login failed for user My'server/MyuserName'"

even when i close the sql server manager , it is still stuck - the connection test doesn't work anymore....
it only work when i restart the computer.
