How Do I Change The SQLEXPRESS Default Instance Name

Aug 18, 2006

Is this the only way to rename the default SQLEXPRESS instance name?

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q283811

Is there an easier way?  I tried going to Register and changing it.. but that didn't seem to do anything.

Migrating From SQL2K Named Instance To SQL2K5 Default Instance

Feb 19, 2007

Hi, I have a task in hand to migrate (upgrade) from SQL2K named instance to SQL2K5 default instance. There are many intranet applications touching current SQL2K. I would like to perform this upgrade such that I don't have to touch any application code - meaning I don't have to change the connectionstring to point to new Default instance. How can I achieve this?

So, in otherwords, here is what I want to achieve:

Current Server: SQL2K: SERVER_AINSTANCE_A (named instance)

Upgraded Server: SQL2K5: SERVERB (default instance)

If I have both default, I could achive this by setting up DNS alias after migration done so that any call for SERVER_A would point to SERVER_B. But in my case, I don't have SERVER_A, I have named instance. Is there any solution?

Regards,

Vipul

Named Instance Problems (Default Of 7.0/2000 Instance)

Oct 10, 2001

I am trying to set up a Named Instance of SQL 2000 on the same machine that has a default instance of SQL 7.0. The setup always completes and I am able to register the Named Instance of the SQL Server with which it was installed on. However, when I try to connect the users to the database, with both windows and SQL authentication, I receive a SQL server not found error. I have tried an alias setup as well as physically specifying the port number in settup up an ODBC connection.
Has anyone ran into similar problems?
Also, has anyone been able to successfully complete the process as mentioned above?

Migrating From Named Instance To Default Instance

I installed SQL Server 2005 recently on a cluster. I didn't go for the default instance and instead I named the instance option. Now I would like to migrate everything from the named instance to the default instance, which I haven't yet installed.

Is this an easy process? What about the logins and the maintenance plans and jobs? Is there anything else I need to be aware of?

Create A Named Instance On Top Of A Default Instance

Apr 13, 2007

Hi

I've never had to do this, but when I downloaded the Web Workflow Approvals Starter Kit, it requested that I install the database into a User Instance of .SQLEXPRESS.

Now the problem is, I've installed it onto a default instance, so I was wondering whether you can create a named instance on top of a default instance... and if so, how would you do that?

Cheers

SQLExpress Default Databases

Jul 27, 2007

When building a website, I get two SQL databases auto-generated: ASPNET.MDF and ASPNETDB.mdf - both have a log file associated with them, and I can connect to them locally no problem.
However, when I try to connect through my host, I get an error message: "Could not find stored procedure 'dbo.aspnet_CheckSchemaVersion'."
I think this is because the ASPNET file doesn't show any database objects??? (ASPNETDB has all its objects)
My questions: Should I be getting both files autogenerated? And if so: How can I (or should I) get the ASPNET file to rebuild its database objects?
This problem has roots in the fact that I deleted the file(s), thinking they were unneccesary (rookie mistake, I know), and then tried various uninstall/re-install schemes, all of which has put me back to this problem of about four days ago. Now that's what I call progress! ;-)
I'm using Visual Web Developer Express 2005 with the default SQL Express version. I've looked at the related posts, of course, but don't see anything specific.
I think this is the code in question, and it looks OK to me, but I am a rank beginner:
System.Web.Util.SecUtility.CheckSchemaVersion(ProviderBase provider, SqlConnection connection, String[] features, String version, Int32& schemaVersionCheck) +367
Thanks in advance.

Connection String For Default Instance Of SQL Server 2005, On A Box Also Running A Named Instance Of SQL Server 2000

Nov 15, 2007

The box I am trying to connect to is running two instances of SQL Server.
There is a SQL Server 2005 instance which is the default. There is a SQL Server 2000 instance which is named 'SQLSERVER'.
 I can connect to the SQL Server 2000 instance no problem:<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPCSQLSERVER;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" />
However,  I am having trouble connecting to the Default SQL Server 2005 instance. I have tried:
<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPC;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" />
 but it doesn't work. I have tried explicitly setting SQL Server 2005 to use port 1434 (as SQL Server 2000 is running on port 1433), and then used:
<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPC,1434;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" />
but this doesn't work either.

Am I mssing something here? Any help much appreciated
Thanks...

SQLExpress, User Instance And Detach

Feb 17, 2006

Basically I need to know how to detach a db from a user instance of SQL Express from inside a VS2005 windows forms application.

The application is project oriented and the design calls for each project to be stored in its own separate .mdf file. When the user wants to switch projects the application will detach the current database and attach a different one, containing the data for the desired project.

I have this working fine with the default (.SQLEXPRESS) db instance, but I am having a problem getting the code to work with a SQL Express user instance (also part of the specification).

I am using the SMO library to do the Detach, and this works fine with the default instance, but for the user instance I am unable to connect to the necessary (user) instance of the db server.

I have tried selecting the instance name from dm_os_child_instances on the default instance and using the dynamically generated instance name to create the Server object. I get a good instance name, but when I create the Server object, the connection fails. I have also tried issuing "sp_detach_db" on the user instance, but this fails because the db is in use.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated...

Can I Connect To SQLExpress Instance Using (local)

Feb 19, 2007

Hello,

I am using the following connection string to connect to SQL Server 2005 Express Edition installed on my local PC.
string sqlstr = "Server=(local);Database=MyDB;User ID=sa;Password=sa;Trusted_Connection=False";

And it gives me the following error. The string works fine in computer with SQL Server 2000 instance but fails with 2005. The string also fails for "Server = localhost".
However the string works very fine if I use the name of Server 2005 i.e ./SQLExpress

===================================

Cannot connect to (local).

===================================

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)

------------------------------
Error Number: 2
Severity: 20
State: 0

------------------------------

Now the main problem is that, of course I could use a named instance, but since I am embedding the Connection String in a dll file so that any user can use it to connect it to the local instance of the SQL Server 2005 installed in his/her computer, I need to use "server = localhost". Doesn't SQL 2005 support this. If yes, where could i find option to enable it?

I have enabled every option available in surface area configuration for SQL Server 2005, but nothing seems to help out. I even use local as well as remote connections using both TCP/IP and named pipes.
Can nyone help me out?

SQLEXPRESS Default Owner Wrong

Apr 3, 2006

I'm getting the "This database does not have a valid dbo user or you do not have permissions to impersonate the dbo user,...." error message when trying to add a Database Diagram from Visual Studio Server Explorer.

I can add the diagram without a problem from SQL Server Management Studio Express CTP.

When I view the properties of the database in VS, the owner shows as XYZMyOldUserName. This is wrong. I just added this database to a new project.

When I view the properties of the database in SSMSE, the owner shows as XYZMyNewUserName. This is correct. It shows the name I am logged onto the PC with.

I'm logged onto a domain using Active Directory. I renamed my user logon name from MyOldUserName to MyNewUserName a couple weeks ago. Now, VS is still picking up that old name somewhere and, despite it showing properly in SSMSE, it does not show properly in VS.

Where is that old user name stored? Why does it essentially show the database as being owned by two different users? (well, at least, the same user with two different names.)

SqlExpress Instance In Connection String Instead Of Full Sql 2005

Hello, I had started my project with the express edition, then I switched to the pro one. That's why any help would be really appreciated ! Thank you.

SQLEXPRESS Instance On SQL SErver 2005 Standard Edition

What happens when you install a SQLEXPRESS instance on a machine that already has SQL Server 2005? Will the SQLEXPRESS still run in the limited mode or will it sense that an full standard version of SQL Server 2005 is already present and just "upgrade" itself?

On the otherhand, how do I "upgade" an existing instance of SQLEXPRESS to a full version of SQL Server 2005 standard edition without uninstalling and installing the standard edition. If I have both the instances then will the SQLEXPRESS be freed from its limits?

The Configuration Of The AdminConnectionTCP Protocol In The SQL Instance SQLEXPRESS Is Not Valid

Mar 4, 2006

Hello,

I am getting the following warning in the Application Event Log:

The configuration of the AdminConnectionTCP protocol in the SQL instance SQLEXPRESS is not valid.

The warning is logged by the SQLBrowser service.

This is happening on Windows 2003 server with SQL Server Express 2005. On the same machine SQL Server 2000 is installed.

I am currently unable to connect from remote clients to the instance of SQL Express and I believe it has to do with this warning (I've tried all the usual remote connection troubleshooting without success - enabled protocols, SQL Browser Service running, there is no firewall on the server, I disabled firewall on the client when trying to connect).

Does anyone know how to resolve this issue?

If you need additional information please let me know.

No Default SQL Instance On Install?

May 5, 2006

Problem: When the application installs it requires SQL Express
Server 2005. If it does not exist it will install it or
rollback. -> continue installation -> When the form
attempts to locate an SQL Instance on a machine that has not had SQL
server or any components connected before it shows up as
<null>. I need to have access to the server(s) instances in
order to build the application database inside SQL. Am I using
the wrong approach with SQLDMO? Is there adifferent method
to access the installed SQL Express 2005 connection string?

Current code to locate SQL Instances:

try
{

////////////////////////////////////////

// Search and List SQL Server Instances

////////////////////////////////////////

//set cursor to thinking/hourglass

System.Windows.Forms.Cursor.Current =
System.Windows.Forms.Cursors.AppStarting;

//begin

ArrayList aServers = new ArrayList();

SQLDMO.ApplicationClass acServers = new SQLDMO.ApplicationClass();
//loop through the servers found

for (int iServerGroupCount = 1; iServerGroupCount <=
acServers.ServerGroups.Count; iServerGroupCount++)
{

for (int iServerCount = 1; iServerCount <=
acServers.ServerGroups.Item(iServerGroupCount).RegisteredServers.Count;
iServerCount++)
{

aServers.Add(acServers.ServerGroups.Item(iServerGroupCount).RegisteredServers.Item(iServerCount).Name);
}
}

//add the servers to the drop down box
if (aServers.Count < 1)
{

string NotExist = "<No Servers Found>";

cboServers.Items.Add(NotExist);

cboServers.SelectedIndex = 0;

btnSQLDataBaseCheckDB.Enabled = false;

}
else
{

cboServers.Items.AddRange(aServers.ToArray());

//select the first item in the array index to display

cboServers.SelectedIndex = 0;
}
}
catch (Exception ServerException)
{

MessageBox.Show(ServerException.Message);
}

Slightly stuck at the moment with this. Any tips or leads in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Cannot Connect To A Default Express Instance

Feb 5, 2007

When I try to connect to a default Express instance in Management Studio at the machine (Windows XP SP2) where the instance is installed, I'm getting the following error:

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server)

What does provider: SQL Network Interfaces mean? Does it mean the Shared Memory, Named Pipes and TCP/IP?

Additional information:
1. The following Network Protocols are enabled: Shared Memory, Named Pipes, TCP/IP thru Configuration Manager
2. SQL Server Express default instance is running using NT
AUTHORITYNetworkService.
3. SQL Server Browser service is not running. I believe this is not needed unless I want to connect to the instance from another machine.
4. Has tried to disable Windows Firewall but I believe it should not be matter in this particular case since this is within the same machine.
5. Can connect to the instance in ODBC Administrator using System DSN thru Named Pipes or TCP/IP.

Can such error caused by not having sufficient memory so the system is running kind of slow?
