How Do I Configure An SqlDataSource To Only Return The Top N Rows?
Aug 1, 2006
I have a charting control that is fed from an SqlDataSource. How do I set the SqlDataSource to only return the top N records where N is set by a web form control?
The user should have the option to chart the top 3, 5, or 10 items.
Is the best approach to switch to an ObjectDataSource?

My form contains four objects.
Textbox to perform the query. (name: txtSearchText)

.. the Membership ProviderUserKey value as the parameter of a stored procedure ?It seems obvious to me that you would want to do this, but I can only see that it allows you to pass Profile parameters.

I am building a website with VS2005Standard. Onto an empty aspx page I drag a SqlDataSource control. In the "Configure datasource" dialogs I connect it with the SQL database file of my web app. In the "Configure the SQL statement" tab I select "*" for the columns and open the "advanced" dialog (I don't know the exact english terms because I use the german version) because I want to create INSERT, UPDATE AND DELETE statements separately. BUT: the upper checkbox (i.e. both checkboxes) is disabled! What can I do the get it enabled.

I am attempting to create search parameters for a gridview control and I am experiencing a small issue. When I get to a date parameter I am unable to display null values.
I setup a sqldatasource and created the parameters below to handle the selections for minimum date required and the maximum date required for the date columns in the database. The problem is I do not know how to display null dates.
Is there a way to incorporate something into the search page to show null dataes?
Sql Where Clause 1 WHERE (LSS_Requests.TypeCode = @TypeCode) AND (LSS_Requests.PersonNo LIKE '%' + @PersonNo + '%') AND
2 (LSS_Requests.TicketNo LIKE '%' + @TicketNo + '%') AND (LSS_Requests.Name LIKE '%' + @Name + '%') AND
3 (LSS_Requests.RequestName LIKE '%' + @RequestName + '%') AND (LSS_Requests.RequiredDate >= @Fromrequireddate) AND
4 (LSS_Requests.RequiredDate <= @ToRequiredDate) AND (LSS_Requests.OriginationDate >= @SearchFromOriginationDate) AND

Hi All,
I am using sql server 2005. I stuck out in a strange problem.
I am using view in my stored procedure, when I run the stored procedure some of the rows get skipped out means if select query have to return 10 rows then it is returning 5 rows or any other but not all, also the records displyaing is randomly coming, some time it is displaying reords 12345 next time 5678, other time 2468.
But if I run seperately the querys written in SP then it returns all the rows. Please give me solution why it is happening like this.
There are indexes in the tables.
Once I shrink the database and rebuild the indexes, from then this problem is happening. I have rebuild the indexes several time, also updated the statistics but nothing improving.
But nothing is improving

I have the following code in my page:
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlHolidayDateRange" runat="server" ConnectionString="(OurConnectionString)"
SelectCommand="CountHolidays" SelectCommandType="StoredProcedure">
<SelectParameters>
<asp:ControlParameter ControlID="WeekEndingDatePicker" Name="EndDate" PropertyName="SelectedDate" />
<asp:Parameter Direction="ReturnValue" Name="RowCount" Type="Int32" />
</SelectParameters>
</asp:SqlDataSource>
I need to place RowCount, the returned integer value from the stored procedure CountHolidays into a field on the web page. How in the world do I access that data?
Everything I've been able to find works if I'm defining my own command object and writing this thing from scratch. What I - and you - have to work with is what's above.

hi,I have a page Price List with GridView to display only two columns of a table (Product name & price). Page size=20. I use SqlDataSource for it. <asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" DataSourceMode="DataSet"In my case the SqlDataSource control return data as a DataSet object. So the DataSet object contains all the data in server memory. I need to create Print Preview page with other columns (Product name & price & Vendor and Date Issue) without paging.I'm going to save dataSet in Session and in Print Preview page use it as datasource (without having to run another query).But I have no idea how to save this DataSet in Session. I don't know the DataSet Name. Any ideas? Thanks.

I thought I would impliment a new feature of my web page using stored procedures and the SqlDataSource object, for practice or whatever, since I don't normally use that stuff.
This is the stored procedure:set ANSI_NULLS ON
set QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
go
-- =============================================
-- Author:Lance Colton
-- Create date: 7/31/06
-- Description:Find the contest winner
-- =============================================
ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[AppcheckContest]
-- Add the parameters for the stored procedure here
@BeginDate datetime = '1/1/2006',
@EndDate datetime = '12/31/2006',
@SectionID int = 10,
@WinnerID int = 0 OUTPUT
AS
BEGIN
-- SET NOCOUNT ON added to prevent extra result sets from
-- interfering with SELECT statements.
SET NOCOUNT ON;
-- Insert statements for procedure here
SELECT top 1 @WinnerID = P.UserID
FROM cs_Posts P
WHERE P.PostDate BETWEEN @BeginDate AND @EndDate
AND P.SectionID = @SectionID
AND P.UserID <> 2100 -- I don't want to win my own contest...
AND SettingsID = 1000 -- This number could be different if i had more than one CS installed?
AND IsApproved = 1
ORDER BY NEWID() -- yes this is slow, but it works...
RETURN @WinnerID
END
It's really simple - just needs to return the one randomly chosen integer userID. I've tested it in query designer or whatever it's called in Management Studio and it works fine there at least.
Thinking I was done the hard part, I created a new web form in visual studio, dropped a SqlDataSource on it, and used the 'configure data source' wizard from the smart tag to do all the work for me. I didn't have any trouble using the wizard to select my stored procedure, and i'm using the sa connection string to simplify my debugging. I tried using the FormParameter / FormField way of getting the output and setting the input parameters. I can't seem to get it working though. There's no errors or anything, just the output isn't coming through.
Here's the code from the aspx codebehind file:Partial Class Contest
Inherits System.Web.UI.Page
Protected Sub btnSelectWinner_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnSelectWinner.Click
Dim stuff As New System.Web.UI.DataSourceSelectArguments
SqlDataSource1.Select(stuff)
SqlDataSource1.DataBind()
lblWinnerID.Text = SqlDataSource1.SelectParameters("WinnerID").ToString
End Sub
End Class
As you can see, I wasn't sure if you're supposed to call databind() or select() to actually get the stored procedure to execute, so I tried both. I was hoping the last line of code there would set the label to the value contained in the @WinnerID parameter, but instead it sets it to "WinnerID".
Here's the code from the .aspx file. Most of this was generated by the Wizard, but I messed around with it a bit. <%@ Page Language="VB" MasterPageFile="~/MasterPage.master" AutoEventWireup="false" CodeFile="Contest.aspx.vb" Inherits="Contest" title="Untitled Page" %>
<asp:Content ID="Content1" ContentPlaceHolderID="CPHMain" Runat="Server">
<asp:Button ID="btnSelectWinner" runat="server" Text="Find Winner" />
<asp:Calendar ID="Calendar_From" runat="server"></asp:Calendar>
<asp:Calendar ID="Calendar_To" runat="server"></asp:Calendar>
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:appcheck-csConnectionString-sa %>"
SelectCommand="AppcheckContest" SelectCommandType="StoredProcedure" CancelSelectOnNullParameter="False">
<SelectParameters>
<asp:FormParameter FormField="Calendar_From" Name="BeginDate" Type="DateTime" />
<asp:FormParameter FormField="Calendar_To" Name="EndDate" Type="DateTime" />
<asp:Parameter DefaultValue="10" Name="SectionID" Type="Int32" />
<asp:formParameter FormField="lblWinnerID" defaultvalue="666" Direction="InputOutput" Name="WinnerID" Type="Int32" />
</SelectParameters>
</asp:SqlDataSource>
<asp:Label ID="lblWinnerID" runat="server" Text="???"></asp:Label>

My question is how will I be able to return the retval? Will I need to do it within the code behind of the SqlDataSource Updated Event?
Thanks!

With a Gridview Control, I set the SqlDataSource to be a stored procedure in a Sql Sever database.
Using the wizzard to configure the datasource, the test returns lots of rows. After completing the wizzard, the gridview control does not show the column names in the VS2005 designer. For the gridview column headers the values are Databound Col0, Databound Col1, Databound Col2, ....) This tells me I have a problem.
I tried the same thing with a simpler stored procedure. This test stored procedure does not call anything else, takes several input parameters, returns rows. The column names show in the gridview control as expected.
So I am trying to figure out why the first case of gridview with sqldatasource is not working and the second case works . The stored procedure that is not working with my gridview calls multiple inner stored procedures and has #TEMP tables. My complex stored procedure ends with Select * from #Temp.
Could the calling of other inner stored procedures and use of #temp tables contribute to the problem? If yes then what is the strategy for using a gridview and loading it with the data that the complex stored procedure returns?

Hello and thank you taking a moment. I have created a simple login page where the user will pass credentials. I have a sqldatasource that will query a database to see if the user exists. What I would like to do is have the user click a button after entering their credentials. When the button is clicked I would like the SqlDatasource SelectCommand to fire and if there are rows returned then redirect the user to a new page.
I know I can do this with ADO and a datareader with the HasRows property. But what I would eventually like to do is cache the data and then bind the cached data to a control(like a dataview) on the page the user is redirected to. If anyone can tell me how to get the Select command to fire on a button click I would be eternally grateful. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jason

TotalSelected.Value = SqlDataSource1.SelectCommand = "SELECT COUNT(*) FROM tblNews";
the reason i am tring to do this is so if i can find out the amount of rows before sqldatasource selects for details view then i can make the sqldataesource select depends on total minus 5 so e.g. if total 200 then - 5 so i can select bottom 195 so it misses top 5 for details view any1 any ideas?

Trying to do a paging scheme without using #Temp tables in MS SQL 7.0
Client calls a sp passing 1 and sql returns the first 100 records.
Client sends a sp passing 100 and gets the next 100 records.
Process continues till @@fetch_status <> 0 or the client can stop sending requests.
I implemented it easily using fetch absolute into a #temp table but this has dissaster potential in a multiuser environment since everyone will be using this query continously and there is no user limit.
What other options do I have?
Thanks,
John

I have a database that has 100,000+ records in a table. Am I better off returning all of the records from a search even if it is 50,000 records or is it better to do a SELECT COUNT(*) And nested SELECT TOP x statements to only return 1 page of results? Does sql server have a mechanism (aside from count()) that for any given SELECT query will tell you only how many rows it will return without actually returning the data?
The reason for this is that we have a generic lookup form in an application that is used on almost every screen (we have a lot of screens, so it gets a lot of different, sometimes complicted, queries passed to it to use for the lookup, and having to manually edit the query to use count over all the select clauses doesn't seem like the best way to handle this. If we could do a kind of 'trial run' against the server just to get the number of rows and use that to help set up the form, that would be ideal.
