How Do I Reference The Server Name In TSQL As A Variable

Dec 5, 1999

I have created a job which performs linked server inserts, the job is scheduled to run every 15min. The Job inserts to a local linked server, some data from one of our log tables. That linked server inturn gathers more data from other servers and exports that data to another application for further processing.

My problem is that I need to reference local machine (DNS Name) as a variable which can be passed along with the linked server insert. If I can get the Server name dynamically I can run this as a remote job on 2 or 20 or 200 servers and It will give the log data and the name of the source server.

QUESTION: How Do I reference the server name from within TSQL as a variable.

How To Reference A Previous Field Alias In TSQL As In Jet SQL?

Jun 1, 2006

My question is simple, I'd like to do something I do in Jet ANSI-89 SQL. Mind you I'm just adding numbers here - they are not actual columns in 'SomeTable'

SELECT 1 AS A, 2 AS B, A+B AS C
FROM SomeTable

The Jet engine evaluates and does arithmetic on the Aliased column names - handy when they contain their own functions. The resultset would show:

A B C
1 2 3

However from what I can tell SQL Server 2005 is not picking this up. Is their an equivalent?

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Circular Variable Reference

I'm going around in circles trying to visualise what's happening in this code,

declare @ReturnValue int, @ProcessFlag int
exec @ReturnValue=spGetProcessFlag @ProcessFlag output
select @ReturnValue as ReturnValue, @ProcessFlag as ProcessFlag

I get the feeling that the code runs spGetProcessFlag, and assigns the value to either @ReturnValue or @ProcessFlag.

By the way - next task is to direct SSIS whether to fail package or continue running.

How To Access Global Variable In DTS And Use In TSQL

I have a VBscript below which works fine, which creates a unique file name for a text source and creates it just fine. What I need is to use that file name in an insert statement in TSQL to load a record to a transaction table. How do I utilize this variable to do this?
Thanks

Function Main()

' Filename format - exyymmdd.log
sFilename = "ex" & Right(Year(Now()), 2)
If Month(Now()) < 10 Then sFilename = sFilename & "0" & _

If Day(Now()) < 10 Then sFilename = sFilename & _
"0" & Day(Now()) Else sFilename = sFilename & Day(Now())
sFilename = DTSGlobalVariables("LogFilePath").Value & _
sFilename & ".log"

Set oConn = DTSGlobalVariables.Parent.Connections("Text File (Destination)")
oConn.DataSource = sFilename
' oConn.DataTarget = sFilename

TSQL - Create A Variable Number Of Rows

May 4, 2008

I have a booking system which stores an event along with a start date and a finish date. I want to create a table which has a row for each day the event is on. I can find the number of days easily enough using a datediff function but I don't know how to translate this into that number of rows. My current thinking is to cross join the original table out to another temporary table with a large number of rows and use SQL2005 to only select the top 'x' rows, then use the rownumber of this temp table to add the required number of days to the StartDate to get each eventdate. Currently I use a loop to build the required table but there must be a way to get it all done in a single statement :)
Thanks

ORIGINAL DATA
EventID StartDate EndDate
1 1/1/08 1/1/08
2 20/1/08 22/1/08

REQUIRED DATA
EventID EventDate
1 1/1/08
2 20/1/08
2 21/1/08
2 22/1/08

How To Reference ADO Object Source Variable Within Script Component?

Dec 7, 2007

Hello,
I have a 'ForEach Loop Container' that does a select from a table and I use Variable Mappings to map each row set result to Package Variables in SSIS. This works fine. However, in the Data Flow, I have a Script component in which I need to access the values of those variables that have been set in the ForEach Loop Container. How do I do this?

Perhaps I'm on the wrong track but I guess I need to access the ADO Object Source variable set in the ForEach Loop Container? Through my own experimentation, I know that accessing the VariableDispenser collection only returns whatever default values that happen to be assigned to the variables in the SSIS GUI (not the values assigned during each iteration of the ForEach Loop).

Thanks,
Clive

Storing The Result In A Variable Resulting From A Dynamic TSQL Query

Aug 30, 2007

Hello all:

Here is a sample query:

DECLARE @KEYID NVARCHAR (50) ; SET @KEYID = '1074958'

DECLARE @ENTITY NVARCHAR (100); SET @ENTITY = 'HouseDimension'

DECLARE @KeyCol NVARCHAR(50);

SET @KeyCol = (SELECT LEFT(@ENTITY, (SELECT CHARINDEX( 'DIM', @ENTITY) -1)) )+ 'Key'

DECLARE @KeyValue NVARCHAR (1000)

SET @KeyValue = 'SELECT '+ @KeyCol + ' FROM HouseManagementFact WHERE HouseKey = ' + @KEYID +

' GROUP BY ' + @KeyCol + ' HAVING SUM(TotalClaimCount) > 0 OR SUM(HouseCount) > 0 '

The value resulting from Executing @KeyValue is an integer.

I want to store this value in a new variable say @VAR2

When I do this

DECLARE @VAR2 INT
SET @VAR2 = execute sp_executesql @KeyValue

its giving me an error.

can somebody let me know the correct form of storing the value resulting from @KeyValue in some variable ?

Reference For SQL SERVER 2000

Jul 27, 2007

Hello there everyone!!

I've just joined this community and already feel alot better in doing so!!

My question is aimed at SQL Server 2000. Part ofmy job role has swicthed to SQL Developer to Database Administrator.
To learn SQL Server 2000 (latest version available to me) I wanted to find out about courses (based in London, UK) which help teach along the lines of the following topics:

Fundamental concepts
SQL Server installation and upgrade
Database management
Backup and recovery
Alerts and jobs
Security
Replication
Monitoring SQL Server
Converting and migrating data

This is what I understand to be prior importance for the role.

My main question to you guys: Can anyone recommend a reference book which is a good desktop companion which covers all of these topics to detailed depth??

I'm running SQL Server 2000 on Windows 2003 Server. I'm aware some books may be old, but the later they are the better?

I've studied SQL at uni, covering RDMS, OLAP, Data manipulation, Data Definition. But now its to be applied to SQL SERVER 2000

Any suggestions please?

Thank you for your support

Sql Server CLR Integration Reference

May 16, 2006

I have a DLL coded in C# which has a one Function which returns 0 or 1 depends on the operation. I am using SQL 2005 and same functionality I want to reuse in SQL. So I have decided to use new functionality of 2005 CLR integration to avoid code redudancy.

I will create a function and that function will call internally this DLL and return value. But my problem is here that I am not able to set a reference to the C# dll. I am getting messages Sql Server Projects can refer only other sql Server projects.

I think there must be some other way to set reference. Please let me know if any one know how to achieve.

Why Do I Need To Reference The Server Name Now But Not In MSDE 2000?

Nov 6, 2006

With SQL 2000 and MSDE 2000, I only had to put a "." for the server name in a connection string. Now with SQL Express 2005 I have to acually reference the server instance name ".SQLEXPRESS".

Why is this?

Also, when running the command line tools for running scripts, I have to include the parameter "-S MACHINESQLEXPRESS" in the command line where as before I never used the -S parameter at all.

Anyone know why? I am curious because it is going to cause an impact on our upgrades for the client.

My only answer to these questions is that there is no SQL Agent running anymore.

Thanks in advance,
Scott

Optimizing TSQL Server Performance?

Jun 3, 2004

I have some simple TSQL running on a large block of data (565 million records). This process is estimated to take around 5 days and it is critical to get this running as quickly as possible.

I'm watching Windows Performance Monitor and both disk and CPU use are really low and all data is local so there is no network access involved. This is the only task running on this database server. How could this be? The process is running; I just need it to run faster. Typically a system is CPU-bound, disk-bound, network-bound, or operating under maximum capacity. This seems to be none of the above.

In Enterprise Manager, I see the process is sleeping with a Wait Type of "MISCELLANEOUS". What does that mean? Online help gives a pretty useless explanation of that.

SQL Server 2005 Security - TSQL

Jan 28, 2006

Hi All,

I have been building a database in SQL Server Express for some months now using the Windows level authentication login that has given me full access to everything in the database.

The time has now come where I need to create user accounts and grant permissions to specific stored procedures and I'm having trouble doing this.

Can anyone give me a brief rundown of the required T-SQL commands I need to set up a user account that can do nothing but run stored procs (not the system procs which apparently are being discontinued: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms182795.aspx).

So far I have:-

CREATE LOGIN db_test_user WITH PASSWORD = 'eXaMpL3Pwd
USE db_new
CREATE USER db_test_user

The above code executes successfully but when I try and connect (using Management Studio) I get error message 'The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection (error 18452)' which means little to me.

I also tried creating a 'WITHOUT LOGIN' user for the database but could not figure out how to give it a password.

I don't know (/understand) roles/schemas and don't know if I really need them as I only need user access to specific stored procs. I don't ever want them to see the tables for example so they only need the most restricted access.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

DG

Transact SQL :: Server Reference Field From Adjacent CTE

Oct 22, 2015

I am trying to eliminate a scalar function by rewriting a view. I currently have a structure similar to the following:

With FirstQuery as (SELECT Trial, SBOI, TBOI,
FROM TU
WHERE SBOI Between 22000 and 22999 and TBOI < 10000),
strt as (SELECT TOP 1 TimeOfEvent, Trial, SBOI, TBOI
From TU ORDER BY TimeOfEvent),

[Code] ....

What I trying to do is for the Trial, SBOI, and TBOI in FirstQuery, find the Start Time and Stop Time. TimeOfEvent is an integer in milliseconds. Say I have the following data:

TrialID     SBOI     TBOI     TimeOfEvent
A             22000   5000     5
A             22000   5000     10
B             22000   5000     8
B             22000   5000     15

So the DISTINCT output would be:

     Trial     SBOI     TBOI     StartTime     StopTime
     A         22000   5000     5                  10
     B         22000   5000     8                  15

The problem I am having is that strt is selecting the smallest time period. It doesn't seem to care what the current record in cte is. I thought that by using my joins, it would make it select smallest TimeOfEvent for the Trial, SBOI, and TBOI that are selected in cte. Obviously that is not the case. So, I was trying to add a WHERE to the strt Select Statement such as

WHERE TrialID = FirstQuery.TrialID and SBOI = FirstQuery.SBOI and TBOI = FirstQuery.TBOI but it isn't working either.

What can I do?

My question is:

Are there better ways to do this with SQL Server?

I thought of a monthly "job" that does the query and outputs to a file. (Need to be able to look at each month separately though for trend monitoring.)

Then wondered, if I should have an extra table to store the data and write queries on that in the future?

SQLAgent - TSQL Jobs Hangs (SQL Server 2005)

Aug 15, 2007

I have two tables
t_DTM_DATA_STAGING around 2 million records
t_DTM_DATA around 251 million records

The below SQL statement looks for records in the t_DTM_DATA_STAGING table that are not in the t_DTM_DATA table and adds them to a 3rd table. (t_DTM_DATA_STAGING2)

This statement has been running fine for weeks, but now it seems to get hung every day. I ran sp_Who2 and it says the status is runnable. I let it run for around 5 or 6 hours the other day to see if it will finish but it didn't. This SQL job is step 3 in a 6 step SQLAgent job that usually finishes in 30 to 45 minutes.

I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this problem. No other jobs are running at the time this job runs.

Could this SQL statement be written a better way?

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

MSSQL Server 2000 Reporting Services - URL Reference To Images

Nov 16, 2004

Hi,
I'm trying to insert the Url for the image control in the Report designer. As per your article there should be an option (radio button) in Image Wizard to use set the URL for the reports. But i do not get that option at all. All i get is these options
a) - Embedded
b) - Project
c) - Database
I do not get a URL option.
My problem is that i have a URL path to the images that are stored on a Web Server. I would like to this path to be the source of the Image control. I can't make it work. Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks,
GJ
