How Do I Return Results Using An Entire Column As Part Of The Search Parameter
Nov 10, 2007
Hi, Could you tell me if this is possible? How do I return results using an entire column as part of the search parameter? I need to do this in the sql rather than selecting the contents and iterating through it as it would take too long.
eg.
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[tPopupKeywords](
[id] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT FOR REPLICATION NOT NULL,
[title] [nvarchar](255) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL,
[description] [nvarchar](2000) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL
) ON [PRIMARY]
INSERT INTO dbo.tPopupKeywords(title, description)
SELECT 'check', 'desc' UNION ALL
SELECT 'for', 'desc' UNION ALL
SELECT 'keywords', 'desc'
select dbo.tpopupkeywords.title
where 'This is an example of a passed in string to check if any keywords are returned.'
LIKE '% ' + dbo.tpopupkeywords.title + ' %' --Does this bit need to do a select??
expected results.....:
check
keywords

I have a table with 2 columns ItemID and ReturnDesc. A sample of the data is:
ItemId ReturnDesc
1244 Did not want
1244 Wrong color
3426 Return came with ticket 426
3571 Ticket 584 was not included
The only information I want to have returned is the number following the text 'ticket'. How do I do this?

I have a FullTextSQLQuery which I am trying to search a phrase(The Multi-part identifier) on full text indexed table. I am getting expected results on running the below sql query on QA machine and PreProduction servers, but not getting the same results on our development and production servres as even though same code running.
SELECT DISTINCT TOP 50 c.case_id,c.status_id,cal.cas_details
FROM g_case_action_log cal (READUNCOMMITTED)
INNER JOIN g_case c (READUNCOMMITTED) ON (cal.case_id = c.case_id)
INNER JOIN CONTAINSTABLE(es.g_case_action_log, cas_details,
' "The multi-part identifier" OR "<br>The multi-part identifier" OR
"The multi-part identifier<br>" ') as key_tbl
ON cal.log_id = key_tbl.[key]
ORDER By c.case_id DESC
We are using SqlServer 2008 R2 version on all servers.

I have written this sample query to search a full-text indexed table and return the results. If the word occurs more than once I want it to return as a new record and the results show a short summary of the location. I was using 'like', but the full table scans were really slowing it down. Can performance be improved for the following (The results returned by my query are accurate)
Query
DECLARE @searchString nvarchar(255);
DECLARE @searchStringWild nvarchar(275);
SET @searchString = 'first';
SET @searchStringWild = UPPER('"' +@searchString+ '*"');
SELECT id, '...' + SUBSTRING(searchResults.MatchedCell, searchResults.StartPosition, searchResults.EndPosition - searchResults.StartPosition) + '...' as Result

I have made the following Scalar-valued function:
CREATE FUNCTION [dbo].[TimeCalc]
(
@OriginalTime AS INTEGER
, @TenthsOrHundredths AS INTEGER -- code 2: 1/10, code 4: 1/100
)
RETURNS NVARCHAR(8)
[Code] ....
What it does is convert numbers to times
E.g.: 81230 gets divided by 10 (times in seconds: 8123). This 1 1 full minute, and the remainder = 2123 making it 1.21.23 mins)
So far so good (function works perfectly)
My question: sometimes times are in 1/100 (like above sample), sometimes in 1/10.
This means that, e.g. with a time like 3.23.40 the last zero must be deleted.
My thoughts are to use the results from the Return Case part, and as the code = 4: leave it as it is,
is the code 2 the use LEFT(... result Return Case ..., Len(..result Return Case.. - 1))
There are 5 codes: 0 1 2 3 and 4

Hi, I was wondering if any SQL Server gurus out there could help me...I
have a table which contains text resources for my application. The text
resources are multi-lingual so I've read that if I add a html language
indicator meta tag e.g.<META NAME="MS.LOCALE" CONTENT="ES">and
store the text in a varbinary column with a supporting Document Type
column containing ".html" of varchar(5) then the full text index
service should be intelligent about the language word breakers it
applies when indexing the text. (I hope this is correct technique for
best multi-lingual support in a single table?)However, when I come to query this data the results always return 0 rows (no errors are encountered). e.g.DECLARE @SearchWord nvarchar(256)SET @SearchWord = 'search' -- Yes, this word is definitely present in my resources.SELECT * FROM Resource WHERE CONTAINS(Document, @SearchWord)I'm a little puzzled as Full Text search is working fine on another table that employs an nvarchar column.Any pointers / suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Cheers,Gavin.

I am unable to get FTS working where the column to be searched is type varchar(MAX) or Text. I can get this to work if my column to be indexed is some statically assigned array size such as varchar(1000).
For instance this works, and will return all applicable results.
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[TestHtml](
[ID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
[PageText] [varchar](1000) NOT NULL,
CONSTRAINT [PK_TestHtml] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED
SELECT * FROM TestHTML WHERE Contains(PageText, @searchterm);
And this does not. It returns zero results what so ever.
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[TestHtml](
[ID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
[PageText] [varchar](MAX) NOT NULL,
CONSTRAINT [PK_TestHtml] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED
SELECT * FROM TestHTML WHERE Contains(PageText, @searchterm);
Could someone please tell me what I need to do to enable FTS on varchar(MAX) or Text columns?

I have a database that has a table that contains basic demographics
•First_name
•Last_name
•Address
•City
•State
•Zip phone
•email
•dob
•etc
•etc
Contained in this table are a lot of duplicate names, and even different addresses. I would like to return an entire row of UNIQUE information based upon “first_name + last name”. Now I know just enough of sql to pull out unique first + last names, but not the entire row based upon this unique information.

I'm trying to create a query that searches an entire database for keywords inside of the columns for each table within the database. For instance my tables have 2 columns one named ID and the other Permission, I'd like it be able to return all the lines that are associated with that keyword. So if I search "Schedule" it returns all the lines containing that word in it within that database.

Hi,
I need "conditional" cascading parameters: In Report Manager when one changes parameter 1, parameter 2 get changed based on parameter 1. Optionally, one can also enter values to parameter 2 directly.
I was able to achieve this in SSRS 2000 (SP2) with the following setups. SSRS 2005 and SP1 no longer works - Parameter 2 always shows its default value regardless whether one select a value in Parameter 1 or not.
Parameter 1
available values: from query
default values: non query (specify a value "<None>")
Parameter 2
available values: Non query (no value specified)
default values: from query (based on Parameter 1)
It seems to me that the default value in SSRS 2000 is considered as cascading parameter. But it is no longer the case in SSRS 2005.
Is this a SSRS 2005 bug? is there any other work arounds or suggestions?
Thanks.

I am using Sql Server 2014 Express edition.I have a table with a varchar(max) column. I have created a full text search that use the stoplist "system". column has this struct: xxx.yyy.zzz.... where xxx, yyy, zzz... are numbers, like 123.345.123123.366456...I can have rows like that:
123.345
123.345
123.345.444
123.345.555
123.345.666
123.345.444.777
123.345.444.888
123.345.555.999
I am trying this query:
select * from Mytable where
contains(MyColumn, '123.345.')
I gues the contains would return all the rows with column contains 123.345, but this does not return all the expected rows, only one row.I have tried to replace "." with "-" but the result is the same.I have also tried with '123.345.*. In this case I have got more results, but no all the exptected rows.If I use this query:
select * from MyTable where
MyCOlumn like '123.345.%';

hey all,
I have the following query:
ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[sp_SelectMostRecentArticle]
AS
BEGIN
DECLARE @article_id INT
SELECT @article_id = (
SELECT TOP 1 article_id
FROM article
ORDER BY article_id DESC
)
DECLARE @comment_count INT
SELECT @comment_count = (
SELECT COUNT(comment_id)
FROM comment
JOIN article ON article_id = comment_article_id
GROUP BY article_id
HAVING article_id = @article_id
)
SELECT TOP 1 article_id, article_author_id,
article_title, article_body, article_post_date,
article_edit_date, article_status, article_author_id
article_author_ip, author_display_name,
category_id, category_name--, comment_count AS @comment_count
FROM article
JOIN author ON author_id = article_author_id
JOIN category ON category_id = article_category_id
GROUP BY article_id, article_title, article_body, article_post_date,
article_edit_date, article_status, article_author_ip,article_author_id,
author_display_name, category_id, category_name
HAVING article_id = @article_id
END
GO
as you can see, im trying to return a comment_count value, but the only way I can do this is by defining the variable.
I have had to do it this way, because I cannot say COUNT(comment.comment_id) AS comment_count or it returns an error that it cant reference the comment.comment_id.
But when change it to FROM article, comment; I get errors about the article_author_id and article_comment_id.
And i cant add a join, because it would return the amount of rows of the comment...
unless someone could help with what i Just decribed (as i would prefer to do it this way), how would i return the variable value as part of the select statement?
Cheers

I'm using the following query to look in a log file and show somestatistics. It counts the total number of views and the total numberof unique users who have viewed a particular item (the "id" and"title" fields are associated with the item).SELECT title, COUNT(id) AS NumberViews, COUNT(DISTINCT UID) ASNumberUniqueUsers, Type, idFROM ActivityLogWHERE dtTime >= 'Nov 1 2004 12:00AM' AND DtTime <= 'Nov 1 200512:00AM'GROUP BY Title, Type, hdnIdORDER BY TopViewed descThis works fine on SQL Server 2000 (our development machine), but onSQL Server 7 (our production machine), the title column has the samevalue for every row. The other columns show the correct values.If I remove the "ORDER BY" clause, then it works fine. If I removethe "COUNT(DISTINCT UID)" column, it works fine. If I totally removethe WHERE clause, it works fine.Any ideas? It seems like a bug since it works fine on sql2k. I'vetried adding OPTION (MAXDOP 1) to the end of the query, but thatdidn't help.We're using SQL Server 7.0 sp1, and my boss doesn't want to riskupgrading to sp4 because it might screw up all of our otherapplications. I looked through all of the sp2 through sp4 bug fixes,and I didn't see anything specifically mentioning this.Thanks.

I have a query that returns results based on information in several tables. The problem I am having is that is there are no records in the one table it doesn't return any information at all. This table may not have any information initially for the employees so I need to show results whether or not there is anything in this one table.
Here is my select statement:
SELECT employee.emp_id, DATEDIFF(mm, employee.emp_begin_accrual, GETDATE()) * employee.emp_accrual_rate -
(SELECT SUM(request_duration) AS daystaken
FROM request) AS daysleft, employee.emp_lname + ', ' + employee.emp_fname + ' ' + employee.emp_minitial + '.' AS emp_name,
department.department_name, location.location_name
FROM employee INNER JOIN
request AS request_1 ON employee.emp_id = request_1.emp_id INNER JOIN
department ON employee.emp_department = department.department_id INNER JOIN
location ON department.department_location = location.location_id
GROUP BY employee.emp_id, employee.emp_begin_accrual, employee.emp_accrual_rate, employee.emp_fname, employee.emp_minitial,
employee.emp_lname, department.department_name, location.location_name
ORDER BY location.location_name, department.department_name, employee.emp_lname
The section below is the part that may or may not contain information:
SELECT (SELECT SUM(request_duration) AS daystaken
FROM request) AS daysleft
So I need it to return results whether this sub query has results or not. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
TIA

How can I display data that only compare the date part (ignoring the time part) between the value of the date parameter and the database?. It displays data only if I pass the whole date (date and time)
I tried with the following query in the report services 2000, but it even didn't pass the query parse
SELECT * FROM table

Not sure if this is possible, but maybe. I have a table that contains a bunch of logs.
I'm doing something like SELECT * FROM LOGS. The primary key in this table is LogID.
I have another table that contains error messages. Each LogID could have multiple error messages associated with it. To get the error messages.
When I perform my first select query listed above, I would like one of the columns to be populated with ALL the error messages for that particular LogID (SELECT * FROM ERRORS WHERE LogID = MyLogID).
Any thoughts as to how I could accomplish such a daring feat?

Hi guys
I need to create an "advanced search" which will allow the user to narrow down his results.
Ideally I'd want him/her to use the same search criteria form for each iteration, with a checkbox called "Search within results" type of thing.
Now what I was wondering if there was any existing literature on how to effectively do this. I have tried doing it just through SQL Statements but they are becoming very messy and large.
Is it possible to do this by searching the initial dataset, returning dataset #2 and then if a 3rd "search within results" is done apply the search against dataset #2 and return dataset #3 etc?
Many Thanks

I am trying to get this query to the point where it will return only results that meet specific conditions. Here is the current query I have:
use mdb
SELECT call_req.ref_num, prob_ctg.sym, act_type.sym, act_log.description
FROM call_req
INNER JOIN prob_ctg
ON call_req.category = prob_ctg.persid
INNER join act_log
ON call_req.persid = act_log.call_req_id
INNER JOIN act_type
ON act_log.type = act_type.code
where prob_ctg.sym like 'rd1.%' and prob_ctg.auto_assign=1 and call_req.active_flag=0 ORDER BY call_req.ref_num, act_log.time_stamp DESC
This produces results as follows:
I3835493FY15 RD1.Desktop Transfer Transfer Asignee from " to Jordana, Jose"
I3835493FY15 RD1.Desktop Close Status changed from 'Resolved' to 'Closed'
I3835493FY15 RD1.Desktop Close Status changed from 'Open' to 'Resolved'
I3835493FY15 RD1.Desktop Event Occurred AHD05447 No eligible Request Locations
I3835493FY15 RD1.Desktop Initial Create new request/incident/problem
[Code] .....
This query gives me the total number of records that meet my overall criteria, but what I need to have is a count of the total distinct number of call_req.ref_num and then I need a count of the number of records where act_type.code = TR and the text of act_log.description contains text including "Transfer Group From" and then I need a count of the records where act_type.code = EVT and the text of act_log.description contains text including "AHD054".
