How Do I Seach Fo All Records Containg A String?

Mar 5, 2007

In Classic ASP I did this:
Dim sString, sArray
sString = Request.Form ("txtQuery")
sString = replace(sString, " ", "")
sArray = Split(sString,",")
strSQL = "SELECT * FROM Resources WHERE "
For i=0 to UBound(sArray)
   strSQL = strSQL & "Description LIKE '%" & sArray(i) & "%' OR "
Next
strSQL = left(strSQL, (len(strSQL)-4))
I have a .NET 2.0  web app with strongly typed datasets.  I know how to create a method with a parameter, something like this:SELECT * FROM Resources WHERE Description=@Description

The problem I have is that txtQuery can contain a number of strings to search for.  Is there a better way to do this than what I'm trying?

Hi,First post so apologies if this sounds a bit confusing!!I'm trying to run the following update. On a weekly basis i want toinsert all the active users ids from a users table into a timesheetstable along with the last day of the week and a submitted flag set to0. I plan then on creating a schduled job so the script runs weekly.The 3 queries i plan to use are below.Insert statement:INSERT INTO TBL_TIMESHEETS (TBL_TIMESHEETS.USER_ID,TBL_TIMESHEETS.WEEK_ENDING, TBL_TIMESHEETS.IS_SUBMITTED)VALUES ('user ids', 'week end date', '0')Get User Ids:SELECT TBL_USERS.USER_ID from TBL_USERS where TBL_USERS.IS_ACTIVE = '1'Get last date of the weekSELECT DATEADD(wk, DATEDIFF(wk,0,getdate()), 6)I'm having trouble combing them as i'm pretty new to this. Is the bestapproach to use a cursor?If you need anymore info let me know. Thanks in advance.

In oracle it can be done by using REGEXP_SUBSTR. But how can we do this in SQL?

Normalizing Comma Separated String To Multiple Records

Oct 17, 2012

I need to normalise comma separated strings of tags (SQL Server 2008 R2).

E.g. (1, 'abc, DEF, xyzrpt') should become
(1, 'abc')
(1, 'DEF')
(1, 'xyzrpt')

I have written a procedure in T-SQL that can handle this. But it is slow and it would be better if the solution was available as a view, even a slow view would be better.

Most solutions I found go the way round: from (1, 'abc'), (1, 'DEF') and (1, 'xyzrpt'), generate (1, 'abc, DEF, xyzrpt').

If memory serves, it used "FOR XML PATH". But it's been a while and I may be totally wrong.

Deleting Old Records Is Blocking Updating Latest Records On Highly Transactional Table

Mar 18, 2014

I have a situation where deleting old records is blocking updating latest records on highly transactional table and getting timeout errors from application.

In details, I have one table called Tran_table1 in OLTP database. This Tran_table1 is highly transactional table, it will receive data for insert/update continuously

While archiving 2 years old records from Tran_table1 into Tran_table1_archive in batches(using DELETE OUTPUT INTO clause), if there is any UPDATEs on Tran_table1,these updates are getting blocked and result is timeout errors in application.

Is there any SQL Server hints to avoid blocking ..

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Renumbering Remaining Records In A Table After Some Records Deleted

Dec 3, 2014

I have a table with about half a million records, each representing a patient in my county.

Each record has a field (RRank) which basically sorts the patients as to how "unwell" they are according to a previously-applied algorithm. The most unwell patient has an RRank of 1, the next-most unwell has RRank=2 etc.

I have just deleted several hundred records (which relate to patients now deceased) from the table, thereby leaving gaps in the RRank sequence. I want to renumber the remaining recs to get rid of the gaps.

I can see what I want to accomplish by using ROW_NUMBER, thus:

SELECT ROW_NUMBER() Over (ORDER BY RRank) as RecNumber, RRank
FROM RPL
ORDER BY RRank

I see the numbers in the RecNumber column falling behind the RRank as I scan down the results

My question is: How to convert this into an UPDATE statement? I had hoped that I could do something like:

UPDATE RISC_PatientList_TEMP
SET RRank = ROW_NUMBER() Over (ORDER BY RRank);

but the system informs that window functions will only work on SELECT (which UPDATE isn't) or ORDER BY (which I can't legally add).

Need Efficient Query To Partition Records By Type And Pull Top N Records From DB

Jan 18, 2008

I have a query similar to the following. The intent of this query is to retrieve the top 6 records meeting the specified criteria (LOGTYPENAME = 'Process Status Start' OR LOGTYPENAME = 'Process Status End' ) based on most recent dates. Please keep in mind that I expect to return up to 6 records for each unique LogProcessName. This could be thousands of different LogProcessNames with up to 6 records for each.

1) The table I am executing against currently is very large in size and thus takes a long time to execute against. It would seem there must be a more efficient query to get the results I am looking for?
2) CTE doesn't work on SQL 2000. I need a query that does.
3) I cannot modify the database itself in the process.

;WITH cte AS (
SELECT [LogProcessName], [LogBody], [LogDate], [LogGUID], row_number()
OVER(PARTITION BY [LogProcessName]
ORDER BY [LogDate] DESC)
AS RN
FROM [LOGTABLE]
WHERE [LogTypeGUID] IN (
SELECT LogTypeGUID
FROM LOGTYPE
WHERE LogTypeName = 'Process Status Start'
OR LogTypeName = 'Process Status End' ) )
SELECT *
FROM cte
WHERE RN = 1 OR RN = 2 OR RN = 3 OR RN = 4 OR RN = 5 OR RN = 6
ORDER BY [LogProcessName] DESC, [LogDate] DESC

Does anybody else have any idea that would yield the results that I am looking for and take into account items 1-3 above?

Thanks in advance.

Need Help With String Manipulation - Splitting 1 String Into Multiple Columns

Sep 11, 2006

Hello All,

I'm a non-programmer and an SQL newbie. I'm trying to create a printer usage report using LogParser and SQL database. I managed to export data from the print server's event log into a table in an SQL2005 database.

There are 3 main columns in the table (PrintJob) - Server (the print server name), TimeWritten (timestamp of each print job), String (eventlog message containing all the info I need). My problem is I need to split the String column which is a varchar(255) delimited by | (pipe). Example:

2|Microsoft Word - รายารรับ.doc|Sukanlaya|HMb1_SD_LJ2420|IP_192.10.1.53|82720|1

The first value is the job number, which I don't need. The second value is the printed document name. The third value is the owner of the printed document. The fourth value is the printer name. The fifth value is the printer port, which I don't need. The sixth value is the size in bytes of the printed document, which I don't need. The seventh value is the number of page(s) printed.

How I can copy data in this table (PrintJob) into another table (PrinterUsage) and split the String column into 4 columns (Document, Owner, Printer, Pages) along with the Server and TimeWritten columns in the destination table?

In Excel, I would use combination of FIND(text_to_be_found, within_text, start_num) and MID(text, start_num, num_char). But CHARINDEX() in T-SQL only starts from the beginning of the string, right? I've been looking at some of the user-defind-function's and I can't find anything like Excel's FIND().

Or if anyone can think of a better "native" way to do this in T-SQL, I've be very grateful for the help or suggestion.

Thanks a bunch in advance,

Chutikorn

then if patient "A" is admitted again but there admission date is greater than one day they get a code of 2 being for there second admission but will need to loop thru table looking for other admissions and discharges.

The table name is Adm_disc_Match_tbl

Basically what i have 4 fields.

Admission_datetime = patient admission date and time (datetime)
Discharge_datetime = patient discharge date and time (datetime)

I have a table, in whichone column contains a string-delimited list of IDs pointing to anothertable, called "Ratings" (Ratings is small, containing less than tenvalues, but is subject to change.) For example:[ratingID/descr]1/Bronze2/Silver3/Gold4/PlatinumWhen I record rows in my table, they look something like this:[uniqueid/ratingIDs/etc...]1/2, 4/...2/null/...3/1, 2, 3/...My dilemma is that I can't efficiently read rows in my table, match thestring of ratingIDs with the values in the Ratings table, and returnthat in a reasonable fashion to my jsp. My current stored proceduredoes the following:1) Query my table with the specified criteria, returning ratingIDs as acolumn2) Split the tokens in ratingIDs into a table3) Join this small table with the Ratings table4) Use a CURSOR to iterate through the rows and append it to a string5) Return the string.My query then returns...1/"Silver, Platinum"2/""3/"Bronze, Silver, Gold"And is easy to output.This is super SLOW! Queries on ~100 rows that took <1 sec now take 12secs. Should I:a) Create a junction table to store the IDs initially (I didn't thinkthis would be necessary because the Ratings table has so few values)b) Create a stored procedure that does a "SELECT * FROM Ratings," putthe ratings in a hashtable/map, and match the values up in Java, sinceJava is better for string manipulation?c) Search for alternate SQL syntax, although I don't believe there isanything useful for this problem pre-SQL Server 2005.Thanks!Adam

Search The Records After The Records Populated

Aug 17, 2007

Hi,

I have to search the records after the records populated.

I mean to say, i have displayed records in report, if i enter some strings in the textbox and clicked find, then it will highlight the particular records, instead of highlighting the values, is it possible to display only those particular records.

For example, say i have 50 records in a page,i entered some strings in the textbox and clicked find, then it will highlight the particular 5 records one by one which match the criteria i have entered in the texbox, instead of that i have to display only those 5 records.

Please tell me how to implement in this report,

Thanks and Regards
Altaf Nizamuddin

Procedure Or Query To Make A Comma-separated String From One Table And Update Another Table's Field With This String.

Feb 13, 2006

We have the following two tables :

Link  ( GroupID int , MemberID int )
Member ( MemberID int , MemberName varchar(50), GroupID varchar(255) )

The Link table contains the records showing which Member is in which Group. One particular Member can be in
multiple Groups and also a particular Group may have multiple Members.

The Member table contains the Member's ID, Member's Name, and a Group ID field (that will contains comma-separated
Groups ID, showing in which Groups the particular Member is in).

We have the Link table ready, and the Member table' with first two fields is also ready. What we have to do now is to
fill the GroupID field of the Member table, from the Link Table.

For instance,

Read all the GroupID field from the Link table against a MemberID, make a comma-separated string of the GroupID,
then update the GroupID field of the corresponding Member in the Member table.

Please help me with a sql query or procedures that will do this job. I am using SQL SERVER 2000.
