How Do I Set Up A Default Value For A Field In A SQL Server 2005 Database.

I am working with a SQL server 2005 database. I have created several new tables. In one of the tables, I need to set up a data field so that it will default to a particular value. For exampe, I need to have a particular data field default to a value of '0'
How can I do this? I would prefer not to do this through Query analyzer. I have been using the interface to SQL server 2005 provided through the Visual Studio IDE.
In SQL Server 2000, the default database, when changed (for example, from master to db1 for user sa) would be the database that would be active when you opened a Query Analyzer query window. Now, with the Management Studio, if you log in as sa with the default database set to db1, you still get server.master as your database in the embedded query editor. Also, consistent with this behavior, if I open the Query Analyzer and log onto the new SQL Server 2005 database (not recommended, I know, but works), it does the same thing. Again, in 2000, if you changed the default database, the Query analyzer would open a window starting at server.db1, not server.master. Am I missing something in 2005 to make this same default behavior work? ALSO, when logging into the Management Studio with sa (new default DB set), the connection properties of the Studio shows the DB to be master! What gives?
Hi Guys, I installed the Sql Server 2005 Express and the Management studio Express as well. Does it come with default database so that we can practice on it....If yes, I am not seeing it...How can i find it....? OR It does not come with Default database and we have to create new one....?
I would like to change the default location where new databases are created.
In Server Management Studio, I right clicked my instance and selected Properties. I selected the Database Settings option and am presented with an option to change the Database Default Location (the location for databases and logs can be changed here). If I change the paths for the DB's and logs, and create a new DB, the new files are saved to the new default location paths that I just entered.
My question is this:
If I change these paths, will my system databases (master, model, msdb, tempdb) still be accessible and usable by SQL server? I don't need (want) to change the location of these files, only all my other databases and logs.
We want to add a default date to our database tables. Looking at other database samples people use all sorts of dates to add as default date e.g. 1/1/1997 or the getdate() function. Is it good practice to set a default date and what should the default date be???? Newbie
I am converting an Access 2003 database into SQL 2005 Express for purposes of evaluating the SQL server environment as a future home for my data. One of the motivating factors in the conversion is the integration of LINQ with VB 2008.
Assuming that there was no conversion tool to migrate Access forms for use with SQL and VB 2008, I converted the Access data table and used the VB 2008 form designer to databind textbox controls to fields in the converted SQL database. Here are some basic questions:
The conversion from Access to SQL apparently did not include the default numeric formatting (currency, percentage, etc.) which was part of the Access data table. Is there a place in the SQL server environment to supply a default data format so that forms and reports referencing the field do not need to be manually formatted for each reference?
After converting the data table and spending 2 hours designing the dataform for the 80+ fields, I inadvertantly changed the table structure and found that the dataform was not happy (oops). I corrected the databindings manually for the few errant field references, but wonder if there is some wizard to do this automatically?
Is there a way to print out the dataform itself? I used the following code snippet in my Access form code-behind and I wonder if there is an equivalent VB 2008 function:
Finally, Access can instantly change from dataform to datasheet presentation screens. Can this be done in VB 2008 with two views simultaneously presenting the same SQL data?
Please excuse my naivete, but in contrast to Access 2003 where program functionality is encapsulated into readily apparent controls, menus, and dialogs, the SQL server environment seems foreign, spartan, and all the words are different. Thanks, -BGood
How Can I get Identitiy field from database while inserting new row in sql server 2005 compact edition.
Ex:
I am inserting row in a table through SqlQuery ("insert into ....") in which one of the field is of type Identity which generates number automatically. I want that number to pick up that number and used it in child table....
I need to create a new field on a table and have that field default to another field value in that same table. Is there a way to do this w/ a default constraint rather than adding a trigger to the table? If i can't use a default constraint does anyone have a template trigger i could use? Below is an example of what i'm trying to do (Field_C is the new field and i want it to use Field_A value if no other value is specified on insert). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I installed SQL Server 2005 Developer edition on my machine a couple months ago, and now I can't remember how to log in. I don't remember setting up any log in accounts, and whatever I might have set I apparently didn't write down. Are there default user names and passwords that I could use to get in? 1) Of course making sure Remote connections and both TCP/IP and named pipes are enabled for SQL 2005 2) Verified my connection string works. I even tested it in Enterprise Library using the tool and it connects successfully via windows authentication 3) Made sure of course my logged in user is a member of the administrator group and that my user in SQL 2005 logins has db_owner and full rights to the DB I am connecting to. I also made sure the NT AUTHORITY as well as the 3 sql service users have db_owner rights as well as the adminstrator in the SQL Server logins all have db_owner to the DB 4) Started the SQL Server Browser service, SQL Server DB engine, and SQL Server Agent 5) Made sure my site is setup right in IIS 7. I checked the connection string in there as well as it shows up in IIS7 in one of the sections. Using Windows authentication and it is enabled for my site 6) Tried running the .net site using both localhost (IIS) and also tried using the Visual Studio built-in web server. We got a problem with sql sever in vwd 2008 express.
Q1: is it possible to use an "image button" as an "insert button"?
Q2: Do you have to put the "insert button" in the same table as the "binded" variables for the textbox fields?
In the code we tried to position the "insert button" att three different locations but only one worked. At LOCATION 1 all fields except "presentation" were saved to the database.
At LOCATION 2 the "image button" skips saving the fields.
At LOCATION 3 we get an error msg: [SqlException (0x80131904): Måste deklarera den skalära variabeln "@arbetstakt".] (in english: must declare the ?scalar? variable...)
I have question about install both default instance and name instance on to one server. Do I need follow a specific order such as default instance first then name instance?
If my server already has two or more name instances, can I install one more default instance?

I get the following error and have been trying to figure out why I keep getting it. Initially, I had placed my project under wwwroot folder and ran it under IIS and it gave this error. Then I moved it to my local C drive and same thing. I am sharing this project with two other co-workers and all our config files and code files are same...they don't get this error but I do. I checked that SQL Server Client Network Utility has TCP/IP and the 'Named Pipes' enabled. I thought maybe I have setting in the Visual Studio 2005 that I'm not aware of that's causing this problem...it can't be the server since my co-workers aren't having this error and can't be anything in the code since all of us are sharing this project through vss. I dont' think using different version of .net framework can create this error. I changed the version from 2.0 to use 1.1x and it gave same error... Any help would be greatly appreciated. Is it possible to change the default value of a field using a stored proc or query? Any hints on how to do this if it is possible would be appreciated!
A few months ago, I installed the ms sql server 2005, and use it to learn the book SQL Server 2005 for dummies. It worked just fine. But after i finished the book, i uninstalled the program and deleted the express database engine. Perhaps it was an incomplete installation, yesterday when i tried to reinstall the sql server 2005, i found some configuration tools still in the directory. So i used windows to remove those tools. After that, i reinstall the sql server 2005, and changed some values in the register. The reinstallation goes well. But after it was done. I started the management studio, there's no default database engine for me to connect! All I could find in Internet is how to connect to a database engine without information about how to create one. Can anyone tell me why and help me out?

Hi there! My provider does not yet support SQL Server 2005, they are still on SQL Server 2000. I put together a very basic login page, but it is crashing everytime I access it because of this problem, and sadly I am not advanced enough as yet to know how to remedy it! Can you help? I have just installed SQL Server 2005. I was not given a choice during installation (that I remember seeing anyway) about which drive I wanted to place the default SQL instance on.
It ended up on C: and I needed it on D:.
So my questions are:
Is there a way to move it to D: that is easier than the way you had to go about it in SQL 2000? Is there a way to do it during setup so I can avoid this in the future?
I am unclear as to which Ip address to change the standard port on. When setting up a cluster you have multiple IP address's including the nic that is used for the heartbeat. I have not found any documention on how to change both nodes to listen on a port other than 1433..
I am update/inserting records threw a web form in vb.net. I need to insert 'NULL' into my microsoft sql server database. I am not talking about the below line of code where website is the name of my paramater. If i do that it will just place a blank into that field in the database. If i dont enter anything into that textbox I want it to to say NULL in that field. So if I go into the actual table in the SQL Server Management Studio and look at the website field of the recored I just added or updated and did not type anything into the web site textbox it needs to say NULL. I also tried the second line of code but that places a single quote in front and behind NULL. So the field will have the value 'NULL'. website.value = txtwebsite.text.tostirng if txtwebsite.text ="" then website.value ="NULL" end if The reason why I need the NULL there is because I bind the website filed to a hyperlink template in a gridview. The actual text of the hyperlink is bound to PAYER which is a name of a insurance payer but the navigateto is bound to the website field. If i do not enter any data into the website field and it stays as NULL, then when my gridview is loaded, payers that dont have a website will not be underlined and user wont have the option to click on them since there is no value for the navigateto. But if i use my form to update/add a payer and leave the website textbox blank in puts a blank into that field in my database and when it loads that new row into the gridview the PAYER is underlined and u can click on it but it will just take u to the web site is unavailable page. So is there anyway to actaull have NULL placed into a filed and not just blank space
hi, please help me, i have a data driven site, i made a field that i call "Status"so this is how it should happens, there are three different gridviews in a single page, gridview1 filter is [status] = ok, gridview2 filter is [status] = fine, gridview3 filter is [status] = complete, so all gridview has its own <asp:hyperLinkField> at first the value of "Status" is ok, so it will appear in the gridview1, so when the user click on the <asp:HyperLinkField> of gridview1 it will go to a new page with a form view, this page has a button that when click will change the value of the status field to "fine", so that it will no longer appear to the gridview1 but it will now appear to gridview2 and same with the next <asp:HyperLinkField> click until it appears to the final gridview. so my question is how can i make the button that is capable of changing (update) the value my database field (status) to a specific value, that is not visible to the user thru codebehind or plain asp.net codes. please help me, if you need more info just reply.ThanksSALAMAT PO!

I can start the default instance of RS via Reporting Services Configuration manager and it can also be also started under Windows Services. BTW, the IIS folder structure is under the default website for Reports and ReportServer is present.
So, now how do I go about uninstalling SQL Reporting Services when I cannot see it (as an installed program) without rebuilding the machine ?

I installed SQL Server 2005 flawlessly yesterday. When login as "sa" through SQL Server Management Studio, I get an error message saying it cannot connect to my PC.
I checked the MSSQL Server Service. It is not started and cannot be started because it's looking for a path that does not exist!.
The folder in question is missing. C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL

I initially suspected this problem was cause by a previous MSDE 2000 installation.
I uninstalled SQL Server 2005 & MSDE 2000. I re-installed SQL Server 2005. Same problem. I executed http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/320873 to make sure all registries are removed and manually deleted C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server€™s content

I am doing a shopping basket type demo.I have difficulties going from table with fields like (Name,ProductCode) to table(Name, ProductCode, NumberOfItems). One way could be adding just Name and ProductCode fields and let NumberOfItems come automatically. It could have some common value like 1. How should I do this with VB.
